Brawn ‘back to normal’ after heart checks(0) Ross Brawn revealed on Wednesday he missed the recent Spanish grand prix to have checks on his heart. After handing over to his Mercedes deputy Nick Fry in Barcelona, fellow Briton Brawn is back in action as the team boss in Monte Carlo. Rumours hinted there was more to the story, but Brawn insisted to a German newspaper earlier on Wednesday that he was simply advised by doctors to take the weekend off after a night in hospital for checks. He then told reporters in Monaco his symptoms had been “arrhythmia”, or an irregular heartbeat, insisting he is “back to normal now”. Brawn, 57, joked the heart problem was triggered by watching an exciting football game on television. |

Brawn’s Barcelona absence triggers rumours(0) A lack of official information has triggered speculation about Ross Brawn’s health. And another rumour is that his absence in Barcelona could be connected with Mercedes’ billion-dollar dispute with Bernie Ecclestone over the next Concorde Agreement. The German squad announced on Thursday that Bob Bell is leading the team in Barcelona because regular boss Brawn is back in Britain on doctor’s orders. Bild newspaper said the 57-year-old was given the advice in hospital earlier this week, following a dizzy spell at his home in England. “It’s more than the flu,” chief executive Nick Fry is quoted as saying, “but I can assure you that it’s nothing life threatening.” Indeed, a spokeswoman told us on Thursday that Brawn will be back to work at Monaco in a fortnight. For Spain, Brawn will watch the action on television. “We will still keep in touch,” Michael Schumacher revealed. “Ross cannot be replaced. That’s simply impossible.” |

Ferrari men know Spain crucial for title(0) Ferrari’s title tilt could hinge on the competitiveness of the updated F2012 this weekend in Barcelona. “What I want is to have a competitive car in Barcelona,” insisted the famous Italian marque’s president Luca di Montezemolo on Tuesday. “That’s what I’ve asked for,” he is quoted as saying by Brazil’s O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper. Ferrari had congregated at its Fiorano test track, to watch Jacques Villeneuve drive the 1979 single seater to mark the 30th anniversary of his father Gilles’ fatal crash. But Montezemolo’s disappointment is with the latest Ferrari, which has been heavily updated since the Bahrain grand prix three weeks ago. “Our technicians are confident, but we will have to see how our opponents have advanced too,” he added. O Estado de S.Paulo correspondent Livio Oricchio claimed “Montezemolo knows” that anything other than a big step forward in Barcelona will mean Ferrari has to “start thinking about” its 2013 project instead. “Now we have to make a quantum leap, to have a car that is more competitive, less difficult to drive, and gives confidence to the fans,” Montezemolo is quoted by La Stampa newspaper. “Let’s see how it goes in Spain,” he told Rai television. “I have asked for an extraordinary response from our engineers,” Montezemolo is also quoted as saying by Italy’s Sky Sport 24. La Gazzetta dello Sport, meanwhile, quoted lead driver Fernando Alonso as saying: “Our goal is to be world champions in November, and if we are to succeed then we must do better than we have done so far.” Team boss Stefano Domenicali agreed: “We expect a significant evolution that will bring us closer to the step we need. “The Spanish grand prix is definitely open, as is the championship. Sponsors nervous as F1 ploughs on with BahrainComments Off High-profile sponsors are nervous, as formula one ploughs ahead with next week’s Bahrain grand prix. Despite widespread trepidation felt within the paddock this weekend in Shanghai, the FIA has declared that there is no reason the Sakhir event cannot go ahead. And after meeting with the teams on Friday, Bernie Ecclestone told reporters the race is “200 per cent” on. But The Times reports that, amid the threat of violence, some sponsors have pulled the plug on providing hospitality for guests next weekend. “When you have an environment like Bahrain then all the sponsors will be watching developments very, very closely and talking to each other,” a source said. “It’s a case of ‘watch this space’ basically.” However, the British newspaper said it is unlikely any major sponsors will pull their logos from the cars. “(They) will effectively just have to follow the sport,” said Tim Bampton, of the motor sports marketing company Just Marketing. “They will have to watch and wait to see what happens even though they could be caught in the vortex.” But, at the same time, it is believed that sponsors’ contracts with the teams – such as Vodafone’s estimated $75m deal with McLaren – contain “brand damage” clauses. An added complication for McLaren is that it is part owned by Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund, with Mumtalakat Holdings “on course to own half the business” according to writer Kevin Eason. Also under heavy scrutiny is the conspicuously silent FIA president Jean Todt, whose son Nicolas shares ownership of his GP2 team with Bahrain’s controversial crown prince. “We all know why it (the Bahrain saga) might have dragged a bit,” Mark Webber is quoted by the Telegraph. “F1 is like that. There’s a lot of funding and finances that have come from Abu Dhabi and Bahrain and the Middle East. “They’re very excited about F1 and they clearly want to give it another go. Let’s see if it works,” added the Red Bull driver. |

Vijay’s Vision After two races the 2012 season appears to have all the ingredients needed to serve up a spectacular year of racing. Already the fans have enjoyed two thrilling races and the intensity of the competition across the grid is sure to capture everybody’s attention. I said last year that the competition in the midfield was close, but this year it seems to be even more so with the majority of the grid capable of fighting for points. It’s a good situation for Formula One, but it also means points are harder to come by. It’s encouraging that we have scored points in both races and that will be our aim once again in China. I have to congratulate Paul and Nico on their excellent drives in Malaysia. They are only in their second full seasons of Formula One, but they both showed their maturity in the difficult conditions. At times Paul was one of the fastest cars on the circuit, excelling in the conditions, and it’s clear that we can expect another strong season from him. I was also delighted to see Nico pick up his first points with us after such a strong showing. In terms of car development, the factory at Silverstone continues to work at full capacity to improve our performance. The first two races have given us a great deal of information to work with and we will put it to good use in the coming races. Insiders expect F1 to axe BahrainComments Off Many F1 insiders are now expecting next weekend’s Bahrain grand prix to be called off. “We’re not going to Bahrain, the decision will be announced soon,” wrote Livio Oricchio, the correspondent for Brazil’s O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper. In the wake of the latest reports about the ongoing political situation inside the island Kingdom, Oricchio said he expects the news about the race to be known “today or tomorrow”. He referred to the direct threat made by the protest organising group February 14th Youth Coalition, who said it could not “ensure the safety” of the sport’s travelling members. A spokesman for the international group Human Rights Watch admitted it is worried. “On the ground we see an increasing number of deaths, and serious injuries from tear gas and beatings,” he is quoted as saying by the BBC. And the latest fears have been intensified by the explosion of a bomb that injured seven policemen on Monday, and news that a jailed activist on hunger strike is now close to death. An unnamed team boss admitted he is worried about his employees “and their families”, but an advisor to Bahrain’s interior ministry tried to play down those fears. “People can be assured that if problems arise, then there will be a plan to deal with that as there would be with any public event in the world,” former London police assistant commissioner John Yates told the Associated Press. But even Bernie Ecclestone, who will be in China this weekend, could now be stepping back from the controversy. “If the teams don’t want to go, then we cannot make them,” the F1 chief executive told the Times. All the FIA has said is that it is “monitoring” the situation, with it believed that contingency plans are in place so that F1 can cope with a cancellation decision made as late as this Saturday or Sunday. The Bahrainis, meanwhile, are confident. “We anticipate formula one will continue and hope it will be a success,” said government spokesman Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Mubarak al-Khalifa. The Bahrain circuit’s Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa added: “The race is going ahead — there is no doubt about that. “There are several reports doing the rounds that are saying a lot of things which are baseless,” he told the Gulf Daily News. “We are ready and there is a plan in place to ensure the safety of the teams, officials and fans.” |

Marko: Red Bull has work to do to defend titleComments Off Dr Helmut Marko has admitted Red Bull has work to do in order to return to the front in formula one. Having dominated F1′s recent history, the energy drink owned team is now behind McLaren in the constructors’ standings after two races in 2012, while its highest placed driver is Mark Webber in fourth. Austrian Marko, the motor racing advisor to Red Bull mogul Dietrich Mateschitz, insisted that Adrian Newey and his technical team have built a good car for 2012. “But it doesn’t help,” he told Salzburg television channel Servus TV, “if we are the fastest only in certain conditions, rather than consistently. “To tell you the truth, at the moment it’s almost as though the car decides when it is the fastest, and when it is not,” Marko said during the ‘Sport und Talk aus dem Hangar-7′ programme. The outspoken manager also vigorously defended Sebastian Vettel in the wake of the Narain Karthikeyan affair, after Red Bull’s world champion lost his temper with the HRT driver following a clash in Malaysia. Marko firmly pointed the finger at F1′s backmarkers. “We have told our team manager to talk to both Marussia and Hispania about getting their drivers to simply pay more attention,” he said. “They are driving in another league, they’re six or eight seconds slower, and so they need to watch out more than they do. “They are 12 points Vettel lost that could be crucial in the world championship,” added Marko. He also fended off the claim that Vettel’s behaviour in Malaysia, featuring the display of middle fingers and calling Karthikeyan an “idiot”, was not worthy of a role model. “You’ve just been in a race, you’ve seen the chance of possibly a third place go away — you’re naturally upset because he’s a human as well. “I think we can understand an emotional reaction,” added Marko. |

More Britons watched BBC’s delayed coverageComments Off The BBC’s delayed and edited highlights of Sunday’s Australian grand prix attracted more viewers than the British broadcaster’s live coverage of the same Melbourne race a year ago. Last year, the BBC’s live coverage of the 2011 season opener averaged 2.13 million viewers. But the delayed highlights package for 2012, aired hours after the race finished between 2 and 4pm, attracted 2.7 million viewers. The figures may, however, be a one-off, with Australia usually among the lowest-rating races in Europe due to the very early morning live timeslot. Sky’s live coverage of the pay-channel’s 2012 coverage, meanwhile, averaged just 526,000 viewers. A spokesman for the channel refused to comment on whether Sky was disappointed with the figures. “It is the performance of the whole (F1) channel we are interested in. We are pleased with the launch of the channel overall,” he told the Guardian. Eight of F1′s 12 teams are based in Britain. |

Petrov ‘as good as Trulli’ says Caterham bossComments Off Caterham’s team boss insists Vitaly Petrov is just as good as the experienced grand prix winner he replaced. “I think he (Petrov) is as good a driver as Trulli, but he obviously brings a Russian commercial element,” Fernandes told the US cable news channel CNN. “It gives us the ability to exploit commercial opportunities in Russia. We’ve watched Petrov very closely. He brings in sponsorship. He’s competent enough to be a second driver,” he added. Fernandes, who also heads the Malaysian airline AirAsia and the English premier league club Queens Park Rangers, said Caterham is once again targeting tenth place in the constructors’ championship for 2012. “We want to get into the midfield,” he confirmed. “We said it’s going to take us two years, we want to be tenth then we want to be racing. “And looking at the times right now, we’re there or thereabouts. Alguersuari in McLaren test driver talksComments Off Jaime Alguersuari is reportedly in talks with McLaren about becoming a test driver. “I am talking to a top team and there have been several meetings,” he said. “Everybody was caught out with not enough time to think of everything, so I was left without a seat.” It is believed Alguersuari, 21, received a call from McLaren in January, enquiring about his services as a potential test driver. The driver was asked about the rumour and he replied: “The person who has said it (the top team) is McLaren is you. “There are several possibilities that are being talked about. For now I’m with the BBC as a commentator and I don’t know how it’s going to go watching the races, because I want to get back to racing.” |

Montoya blasts F1 ‘joke’Comments Off Juan Pablo Montoya has aimed fire at formula one, blasting the look of this year’s cars and insisting he does not regret walking away. Still in America’s premier motor racing category and a few pounds heavier than in his F1 days, the now 36-year-old Colombian was asked if he has ever regretted the move. “Not for a second,” he is quoted by Switzerland’s Motorsport Aktuell. “Of course I have some fond memories of formula one, but I don’t miss it. I miss some of the people I met there. But the racing? Not at all.” Montoya admits he still watches some races, but has “very little interest” overall. “F1 is a joke,” he blasted. “It’s sad they can build cars like that — just look at the new noses.” |

Red Bull may revert to ‘old’ RB8 for MelbourneComments Off Red Bull is considering taking the ‘old’ version of its new car to Melbourne for the 2012 season opener. Rivals and pundits believe the reigning champions are still leading the field, but the latest Barcelona-spec car – featuring a significantly different exhaust layout – did not complete many laps. Moreover, it also did not appear fast. “When I watched Webber’s long run on Saturday afternoon,” said an engineer for a rival team, “it was nothing special — not the laptimes nor the tyre wear.” Also unconvinced are the drivers, with Mark Webber saying the new car did not feel “massively different” to the earlier launch-version RB8. Sebastian Vettel, meanwhile, was dead last after just 23 laps on Sunday, and is quoted as saying: “It wouldn’t be fair for me to judge the upgrades, so we have to rely on the data collected by Mark.” Another rival engineer said there is visual evidence that the exhaust gases on the revised layout “are not going where they (Red Bull) want them to go”. |

Barrichello confirms Indycar move for 2012Comments Off Rubens Barrichello has finally confirmed reports he will race in America’s premier open wheeler Indycar series in 2012. AP news agency said Barrichello, a winner of 11 grands prix with Ferrari and Brawn, has signed a one-year contract with the KV team. “I’m loving the idea I’m going to be a rookie,” he said. “That makes me young, and I’m loving that,” he said. Barrichello, meanwhile, explained the apparent contradiction of heading into the Indy 500 and other similar events this year having earlier promised his wife he would never race at high speed on dangerous ovals. “What happened is we were watching an oval race and there was a crash and she looked at me and said ‘You are never going to do that, right?’ “And I told her at the time, ‘Of course not, don’t worry’.” He said he ultimately won Silvana’s backing, having initially considered skipping the five oval races. But “I wouldn’t feel comfortable sitting at home and watching someone else driving my car,” explained Barrichello. |
