No rolling heads as Ferrari tackles new crisis(0) Stefano Domenicali has ruled out responding to Ferrari’s latest crisis with the old ‘rolling heads’ technique. One perception in the paddock is that the fabled Italian team, under intense pressure from the Tifosi and president Luca di Montezemolo, often reacts by emotionally shedding staff, with Aldo Costa and Chris Dyer the obvious recent examples. So, having installed new faces including Pat Fry but still struggling with the latest F2012 project, will boss Domenicali set heads rolling again? “Firing people is the work of two minutes,” he is quoted by Germany’s Auto Bild, “but this would not solve our problem. “Instead I need to find new people who can improve the organisation and push the engineers to improve the car,” added the Italian. In the meantime, there is no silver bullet. “I am not happy with the F2012 project,” he acknowledged. “But if you want to see the glass half full rather than half empty, then Fernando has done a great damage control and, with an improved car, he at least has the possibility to continue to fight for the championship. “We have to improve,” Domenicali insisted. “I have asked my people to wake up and respond, and I will no longer hear excuses.” |

Alonso swore at Vettel after Monza duelComments Off Sebastian Vettel was sworn at by Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso after winning the Italian grand prix at Monza two weeks ago. That is the unconfirmed claim of the German daily Bild-Zeitung, who said Spaniard Alonso whispered in the ear of championship Vettel before the Monza podium: “F*ck you, my boy”. Earlier, to the passionate Tifosi’s chagrin, Vettel had passed Alonso to lead the race, a move the Red Bull driver described as “very hard but fair”. Afterwards, the team’s outspoken Dr Helmut Marko said it was “good to show Alonso how the wind blows”. Double world champion Alonso however denies Bild’s claim that he insulted Vettel. “We chatted briefly but it was quite normal and friendly,” said the Spaniard. Bild said Vettel would not comment. But in an interview with the German broadcaster RTL, he talked about having the respect of his rivals. “It’s important to me that I can feel it,” said the 24-year-old, “even if you have had an extremely tough race.” Should Vettel extend his huge lead by another 13 points in Singapore, he will be crowned champion with five races still to run in 2011. An analysis by Financial Times Deutschland said that with 27 per cent of the calendar to go, Vettel’s achievement will rank among the best in F1 history. But Jim Clark (1963 and 1965), Jackie Stewart (1969 and 1971) and Nigel Mansell (1992) actually secured those championships in an even more rapid manner. And the record is held by Michael Schumacher, who won the title with more than 35 per cent of the 2002 calendar still to run. At least Red Bull figures are now starting to admit the inevitability of Vettel’s 2011 triumph. “In many ways it’s more of a challenge to defend a title,” said Vettel’s boss Christian Horner. “It’s one thing to win a title, another to stay up there,” he told Die Welt newspaper. “Sebastian just gets stronger and stronger.” |

Vettel gambles on short top gear at MonzaComments Off Jenson Button furrowed his brow at Monza when he considered how Sebastian Vettel had dominated qualifying. Vettel, indeed, was half a second quicker around the high speed Autodromo Nazionale with a small wing setting and a Renault engine not expected to dominate. His top speed was the least impressive in the entire field, a full 22kph down compared with the best. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport said the answer to the “mystery” is that the 24-year-old German’s RB7 was set up specifically for qualifying, with a very short seventh gear. “Vettel is planning to drive away from the front,” Mercedes’ Ross Brawn speculates. “If he gets away at the start he will go on and have a lonely race. His car is tuned to laptime, not top speed,” added the Briton. If Vettel is passed at the start by a McLaren, then, he may be in trouble, unable to keep up on the straights or make best use of DRS because of the short gearing. “In fact, we have a good chance to get our first one-two of 2011 — I’m optimistic,” said fellow front row-sitter Lewis Hamilton. Added Button: “If he (Vettel) wants to pass someone, he will be on the limiter.” “If he (Vettel) falls behind, it will be hard to get back past,” a Renault engineer agreed. As for the ranks of passionate Tifosi, they are likely to be disappointed on Sunday. “We will try to have some fun and to get on to the podium,” said Fernando Alonso ahead of Ferrari’s home race. |

Domenicali not ruling out title revival for FerrariComments Off Ferrari had a tough race at Spa-Francorchamps but could be set for a stronger showing this weekend, according to team boss Stefano Domenicali. The Italian team, whilst trying to recover its championship deficit, brought updates for its F10 car to Belgium two weeks ago that resulted in a backwards step in terms of competitiveness. Domenicali has made it clear that one more bad result will mean Ferrari switching its focus to 2011, but he also told Corriere dello Sport that he is hopeful of a strong outing on home territory this weekend at Monza. “Winning at Monza is not unthinkable, because we have understood where we went wrong with the improvements in Spa. “We know now how to get the best from these parts,” he said. As part of the last-ditch push for 2010, test driver Giancarlo Fisichella did an astonishing 700 kilometres of straight-line running with the new parts last week at Vairano. Fernando Alonso, 41 points behind the title leader, admits the situation will mean additional “pressure” in front of the tifosi this weekend. “It is obvious that this race is very important for us. There will be some pressure,” admitted the Spaniard. Domenicali concedes that Alonso has been feeling the pressure all season. “If Fernando has done some mistakes, it is because he wants to show who he is. Wearing red overalls is very heavy and a lot heavier than what is seen from the outside,” said the Italian. Domenicali is also supportive of the other half of Ferrari’s driver lineup, albeit acknowledging that Felipe Massa has things to work on. “Felipe needs to find the right balance in his relationship with Fernando, and this will happen over time. “He has grown a lot with Ferrari,” added Domenicali. “He is a driver whose best comes out at crucial times, when the pressure is the highest.” |

Piero Ferrari also strongly criticizesComments Off The controversial events surrounding the current safety car period at the European Grand Prix in Valencia at Ferrari make for great excitement. For Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso drove directly behind the other, as Hamilton was violating the safety car rule, but afterwards he gave his improper behavior, the much better result. For while Alonso bravely behind the safety car was and as accurately as team-mate Felipe Massa was passed back when he had to come in the next round to the pits, could Hamilton up a lead that was enough, even after the pit stop to stay in second. When he came back after his drive-through in second place on the box, you felt at Ferrari naturally treated unfairly. “I am incredulous and bitter, not only for Ferrari, but for the sport as a whole, because this is not something you would expect of professionals,” criticized the son of the legendary company founder Enzo Ferraris. “I have been following now for a long time trials in several U.S. Championships, where the safety car is used very often, but there I have never seen anything like what is now happening on the course in Valencia.” The fact is that Hamilton, who has violated the rules was punished by the conditions less harsh than Alonso, whose conduct was entirely legal. It comes naturally to discussions on the current Safety Car rules. Ferrari, it also considers it “more than appropriate” to speak about the circumstances that have now led to a “wrong race.” An official complaint with the FIA has already deposited the team. |

Domenicali: “We are very angry”Comments Off The press round of Stefano Domenicali after the race began in Valencia because of the late decision of the stewards was later than usual, but very rewarding. For Ferrari had just made the website a controversial review online, in which the Grand Prix of Europe as a “scandal” was called. Q: Can you explain why you are so angry today? ” “The frustration is so great because we made the right move, but still less points than in the most difficult race of the year. This is very frustrating. Do I have to say from the sporting angle that we had bad luck today. The only four cars on the home straight were when the safety car was on, were Vettel, Hamilton, Fernando and Felipe. Vettel stopped before the safety car, Hamilton had ignored the yellow flags and the yellow light, but we had a full lap behind the Safety- Car driving. In the meantime, took the field that was in the pits, back on us, so we fell behind when we came into the pits. The plan you can not. ” “Before some decisions are made, you should be sure they are right and wrong. If we now know, however, that the date of a decision affects the race, then they must be taken quickly, otherwise the consequences of unfair have. Today, the Ferrari has affected quite badly, so we must make sure that something like this happen again. More I would say not really. also ran against a lot of cars still an investigation. That I think is not good. ” Question is: “When the FIA driver got into the race management – today it was Heinz-Harald Frentzen – first of all were happy, but in the last race there were many contentious decisions. How do you comment that?” Q: If the safety car not normally catch the leaders and all others to pass through? ” Q: You just said something about the big speed difference and that is dangerous. If the by the adjustable rear wing does not get worse? ” Q: Just to clarify again: On your website is a scandal of the speech. If you say that this is not the Ferrari’s opinion? ” Q: No. But it is on the Ferrari website. ” Q: Fernando, says the race was manipulated. ” Q: Will you bring this matter to the FIA or discuss with the teams? ” Q: What does this mean? Could it even be a different race result? Q: one hand, you walk the day of shooting on a very fine line when it comes to the limits of the rules to explore the other hand, the rules today against you … ” Q: Let’s auspicious on a topic. Pat Fry moves from McLaren to you. Can you describe his area of responsibility? Q: Do you find it okay that the drivers who have violated the safety car rule were punished only with five seconds? ” |

Ferrari boss claim to “humility” in MelbourneComments Off
YF1. Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo has echoed the sentiments of his star driver Fernando Alonso by urging his team and the tifosi to remain realistic ahead of the Australian GP. The Ferrari boss said, “We need some great humility in this race. We know that we have to work and there is still lots to be improved, such as performance and reliability: it’s important to stay realistic.” Expectations are high, especially in Italy where victory in Bahrain has set the tone for the forthcoming season. Managing these expectations are obviously high on the team’s PR agenda. Di Montezemolo added, “In Melbourne it will be fundamental to have a good qualifying on Saturday, because as usual on city circuits, also here in Australia to start from the front will determine the final outcome.” Earlier in the week Alonso said, “The one-two win in Sakhir gave us confidence and was a great result for the hard work during the winter on the track and at the works, but we can’t take anything for granted. We have to stay with our feet on the ground, keeping calm and staying concentrated: in Melbourne we’re starting from square one.” Alonso and his boss are obviously on the same page… |

Official presentation of the F10 FerrariComments Off In the official Ferrari’s Web Site we have been able to see the presentation of the new 2010 F281 Ferrari. The grip of the front aileron is very high, resembling last year’s Red Bull, so Ferrari has opted for lengthening the engine’s air intake down to the back aileron. Ferrari placed Fernando Alonso at the front of the presentation and the pilot from Asturias had some words for the ‘tifosi’: “I hope that all the ‘tifosi’ are again proud to be Ferrari’s fans and that it’s a winning team again,” he said, looking content and very happy, and as he made complicity gestures to the single-seated. Luca Di Montezemolo, Ferrari Chairman, likewise pronounced some words and said it’s time to leave the past behind and looking forward to the closure of cycles (Schumacher) and opening of new ones (Alonso), ” [..] wishing to be at the height marked by our experience with Alonso and Massa,” he declared. The bad weather has prevented the F10 from giving its first laps; Maranello is snowcapped. There’s nothing to do but to wait until next week |
