Backer says no doubts about 2012 Austin GP(0) The key backer of the scheduled 2012 US grand prix insists he remains committed to the Circuit of the Americas project. Construction in Austin, Texas, has continued amid raging local media speculation, as lawsuits are pending and questions are constantly asked about the viability of the project commenced by the now offside promoter Tavo Hellmund. With 84-year-old billionaire Red McCombs now reportedly in the driving seat, he insisted it is “without question” he will continue to push the project forwards. “Never has been any question,” McCombs is quoted by mysanantonio.com, after the authoritative Austin American Statesman newspaper had suggested he was on the verge of pulling out. “I’m there for the full ticket,” McCombs insisted, although he admitted the row with Hellmund is proving a speed-bump. “I will say we do expect to have some resolution to those issues in a timely fashion, but in dealing with the courts, I don’t know what a timely fashion is.” He told reporters the circuit is now 60 per cent complete ahead of the inaugural November 18 race date. |

Student protests threaten 2012 Canada GP(0) Angry students could threaten next month’s Canadian grand prix. Protests in Montreal, regarding planned university tuition fee increases, have been turning increasingly ugly and even violent, involving the throwing of glass bottles and hundreds of arrests. According to the French language La Presse newspaper, at least one student association has specifically threatened to disrupt the F1 race, scheduled for 10 June on the nearby Il Notre Dame. “I cannot deny that we are following this out of the corner of our eye and will continue to follow it in the coming days,” admitted race promoter Francois Dumontier. The report said students’ chants at recent demonstrations included references to the grand prix. At a recent meeting, one association of students approved a resolution to adopt “a weekend of disruption” aimed at “the cancellation” of the race, which represents “sexist, non-environmental and elitist” values. “It is not clear that we will be targeted,” Dumontier insisted, “but we are an international event and are ready with a safety plan ranging from dealing with simple mischief to a wider disruption. “The grand prix is often targeted because we are a major event. We are not worried but we have our eyes open and will work with the public authorities,” he added. |

Mercedes conducts F1 quit study(0) Mercedes is “on the verge” of quitting formula one. That is the alarming claim of the London newspaper The Times, in an article written by its authoritative F1 correspondent Kevin Eason. Eason wrote that while rival top teams Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull will get to appoint directors once F1 is floated on the Singapore exchange, Mercedes has not been extended the same offer. “Why should Mercedes have the same deal as the others?” F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone is quoted as saying. “What have they done in formula one? “They won a race and that is it.” That attitude, Eason argues, has left Mercedes “on the verge of quitting formula one”, having apparently conducted a study into how its Brackley based works team could be withdrawn. Eason also quoted Ecclestone as having “scoffed” at the suggestion Mercedes quitting could wipe 20 per cent off the value of F1′s stock market floatation. |

Reports link James Key with Ferrari move(0) James Key could be the next formula one engineer to join F1′s struggling giant Ferrari. Multiple media sources, including the authoritative Italian specialist newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, say the Maranello based team is interested in Key, a 40-year-old Briton. Key’s career dates back to the Jordan days, continuing through the transition to Force India, and he eventually joined Sauber in 2010. He was the highly respected technical director at the Swiss team until earlier this year, and was therefore in charge of the impressive 2012 Sauber C31, amid speculation he had headed to Lotus’ sports car project. But the media reports, including in the major German daily Bild, say Ferrari is now interested, particularly because Key is already familiar with the Italian marque through Sauber’s use of the Ferrari drivetrain. However, when asked what truth there is to the Key rumours, Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni snapped: “Nothing, nada, niente!” |

Red Bull not ready to resume F1 dominance(0) Red Bull has poured cold water on expectations the reigning back to back world champions could be set to resume their reign over formula one. After a victory drought spanning the opening three races of the 2012 season, Red Bull broke through with Sebastian Vettel’s familiar win-from-pole triumph in Bahrain last weekend. It means he has leapt to the top of the drivers’ standings, while the Milton Keynes based team is now 9 points clear of its nearest rival, McLaren. “King Sebastian is back!” exclaimed the authoritative Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport after Bahrain. “Vettel and Red Bull dominated like old times. “They have worked hard in recent weeks to have a great car again, so it will be difficult once again to take the throne from Sebastian.” The energy drink-owned camp, however, is not so bullish. “To predict our performance in Bahrain just a week after what happened in China would have been tricky,” said team boss Christian Horner, referring to Vettel’s fifth place in Shanghai. “I am sure that with 16 races to go, we are going to see a lot more variation.” 24-year-old Vettel agrees that, despite the familiar pole-and-victory in Bahrain, 2012 is not the same as 2011, when the RB7 car utterly dominated F1. “We’re not as confident as we used to be,” he is quoted by the Sun newspaper, “so small things can make a difference in qualifying and have a big impact on the race. “We’ve only had four races but I’m not entirely happy with where we are.” Vettel will be back in action next week, when F1 moves to the Mugello circuit in central Italy for a rare in-season test. “In Italy we’ll be able to test and evaluate a lot of things and get the car in a happier place for Barcelona,” he said. |

Ecclestone confirms French GP deal ‘done’Comments Off Bernie Ecclestone on Sunday confirmed reports France is definitely heading back to the F1 calendar. Reports earlier this weekend said authorities had “finally agreed” a figure for the sanctioning fee with F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone. It is expected that the Ecclestone-owned Paul Ricard will share an annually alternating grand prix date with Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps, beginning in 2013. “Yes,” the 81-year-old Briton told French daily L’Equipe in the Bahrain paddock on Sunday. “The deal is done,” said Ecclestone. “We agreed the financial terms with the sports minister David Douillet, in my office on Tuesday. “We are still discussing a few things about money: ‘You give me this, I want that’,” he added. “But, for me, there is no doubt, we will sign it now,” said Ecclestone. He said the outcome of the forthcoming presidential elections in France will not spoil the deal. “Whatever happens, I don’t care,” said Ecclestone. “That’s a local issue that doesn’t concern me.” |

Force India, Ecclestone, deny Bahrain GP boycottComments Off Force India deputy boss Bob Fernley has dismissed reports the Silverstone based team could pull out of the controversial Bahrain grand prix. Two members of the team were allowed to return to Europe this week following a Molotov cocktail attack en route from the Sakhir circuit to the hotel. There were high-level meetings involving Force India on Thursday, sparking speculation the entire team could follow its frightened members back to the UK. But Fernley, admitting that security has been ramped up after the incident, is quoted by Express newspaper: “We are definitely taking part, that is decided.” Bahrain’s information affairs authority also released a statement featuring quotes by Bernie Ecclestone. “I have no knowledge of any teams planning to withdraw from the race and we are all looking forward to racing in Bahrain,” the F1 chief executive said. According to Telegraph correspondent Tom Cary, however, another incident like the one involving Force India this week could force F1 to change its decision to go ahead with the race. “If that happened again and someone was injured then that’s the nightmare scenario for organisers as it might push the teams over the edge,” he said. Many drivers, like Kimi Raikkonen, have said the situation is normal this weekend in Bahrain, but Cary does not agree. “Normally there would be PR events in town, you know, ‘meet the fans’ and that sort of thing but certainly as far as I’m aware there aren’t any of those happening,” he said. World champion Sebastian Vettel said he will be happy when track action begins on Friday. “I think it’s not a big problem,” the German said when asked about the security situation this weekend, “and I’m happy once we start testing tomorrow because then we worry about the stuff that really matters — tyre temperatures, cars.” Earlier, Vitaly Petrov’s manager indicated the Russian would only travel to Bahrain if F1 could guarantee his safety. “If it was dangerous they wouldn’t let us in,” the Caterham driver told The National in Bahrain. “If they make sure nothing gets thrown onto that track to hurt us, then we’ll be fine. We are here; if it happens, it happens,” added Petrov. In fact, almost everyone in Bahrain has been reluctant to comment in detail, but there is an obvious feeling of unease. Peter Sauber told Blick newspaper: “I feel like a guest, and so it is not polite to criticise your host.” But 1996 world champion Damon Hill allowed himself some criticism of F1, including the sport’s most powerful figures, Bernie Ecclestone and Jean Todt. He pointed out that FIA president Todt has said “next to nothing” about the Bahrain saga. “This I find baffling,” Hill wrote in the Guardian. “Surely it is possible to condemn acts of inhumanity without taking a side?” As for F1 chief executive Ecclestone, who has consistently trivialised the Bahrain issue, Hill noted that “few” in the paddock “dare to publicly disagree” with the imperious 81-year-old. “Perhaps we should (criticise him), instead of just muttering under our breath, scared of losing our passes,” said Hill. Hermann Tilke, the German architect who designed the Sakhir circuit, sees the entire saga as a storm in a teacup. “It is safe in Bahrain,” Tilke, whose company has an office there, told the Kolner Express newspaper. “I’ve never heard about any problems from our people. “Of course there is some unrest, but it is protests, not civil war. As Bernie Ecclestone has said, we do sports, not politics,” he insisted. “And if they demonstrate peacefully now, the media will report on it, so both sides benefit.” |

F1′s Bahrain crisis deepensComments Off With F1 currently scheduled to arrive en masse in Bahrain next week, a crisis surrounding the possible cancellation of the island Kingdom’s race is continuing to deepen. The teams have now denied Bernie Ecclestone’s claim that they can simply choose to skip the event. “That would not be possible,” said a statement issued by the teams association FOTA. “Teams are unable to cancel (a) grand prix.” Bahrain, meanwhile, stepped up its campaign, accusing some of deploying “scare-mongering tactics” designed to force the race’s cancellation. The race organisers released a report conducted by Lotus, following the Enstone based team’s recent reconnaissance mission to Bahrain. “We came away from Bahrain feeling a lot more confident that everything is in hand,” Lotus is quoted as having reported. The team, however, reacted angrily, accusing the organisers of having released a “confidential” document. “Lotus F1 Team is one of 12 contestants of the … world championship and we would never try to substitute ourselves for the FIA”, said the Enstone based team. Surmised Times correspondent Kevin Eason on Twitter: “(It’s) getting messy…” At the same time, F1 chief executive Ecclestone became fully immersed in the political situation on Tuesday, reporteding personally phoning Bahrain’s crown prince to express concern about the jailed hunger striker. An Amnesty International report published this week had called for Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja’s release, amid claims he is now close to death and being force-fed. But the Bahrain government, through its information affairs authority, insisted that only police and rioters are being injured in “infrequent and remote clashes”. Also weighing into the argument was Sir Jackie Stewart, the eloquent triple world champion, who said: “I would go. “The commercial rights holder has sold a package, at a price, and it is part of the constructors’ agreement that they attend the races that have been published,” he told the Guardian. “As a team owner I would have to honour my agreement both orally and legally.” Whatever happens, the Bahrain saga – stretching back now over a year – is not good news for the future of the island Kingdom’s calendar spot. “Maybe we wouldn’t renew it (the contract),” Ecclestone admitted to the BBC. “We’ll have to look and see.” |

Marko: Vettel team order ‘not tactical’Comments Off Red Bull has hit back at claims the team lied about a technical problem in Malaysia in order to gain a tactical advantage for the forthcoming races. Near the end of the Sepang race, Sebastian Vettel’s engineer repeatedly instructed the back-to-back world champion to retire his RB8 car. Team boss Christian Horner said the brake temperatures had risen to a dangerous level, but Vettel nonetheless raced to the chequered flag and finished eleventh, one position out of the points. Horner explained Vettel did not hear the radio calls due to a “lightening strike”, but photos prove that the German driver was also repeatedly shown pit boards with the same messages. And the 24-year-old revealed after the race: “Of course you can save the car, but I wanted to see the chequered flag. I think that’s how it should be.” Moreover, the authoritative Auto Motor und Sport quotes Vettel as confirming: “I heard the command.” Red Bull has been accused in some media reports of feigning the brake problem in order to retire the car for tactical reasons and therefore install a fresh gearbox for China next month without penalty. Dr Helmut Marko told Bild newspaper: “After the crash (with Narain Karthikeyan), the temperature of the brakes rose far above the allowed level. “We called him in purely because the car was no longer safe. It was not a tactical decision,” the Austrian insisted. It is reported that Vettel will sit with his team bosses this week in Milton-Keynes to discuss the apparently ignored team order. German racing legend Hans-Joachim Stuck said: “Another driver would be fired, but Vettel has the confidence of being a double world champion.” According to Welt newspaper, Swiss commentator Marc Surer added: “It was the right decision by Vettel, as the team needs to be careful with commands like that.” |

Mercedes could quit F1 over commercial dealsComments Off Mercedes could quit formula one or challenge Bernie Ecclestone in court, after it emerged top rivals Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull have agreed new commercial deals. With the FOTA alliance crumbling, F1 chief executive Ecclestone announced on Saturday that he has agreed terms with the “majority” of teams. In addition to the three top teams, it is believed Lotus, Toro Rosso, Sauber and Force India have also signed up. That leaves Mercedes and Williams apparently yet to agree, while it is believed the three bottom teams Caterham, Marussia and HRT have not even seen a copy of the new Concorde Agreement. Mercedes would not comment publicly. “We would like to ask for your understanding that our team currently has nothing to say on this matter,” said a spokesman. Behind the scenes, however, high-level sources close to the Brackley based team admitted they are unhappy that the terms of the deal heavily favour the top three teams. One bonus, for example, is for teams who have not changed their name. Media outlets including PA Sport and London’s Telegraph were told by the sources that the Stuttgart marque could challenge Ecclestone’s methods against European Union competition law. Or the carmaker and engine supplier could simply quit F1. “It is understood the carmaker and parent company Daimler are prepared to play hardball”, wrote Tom Cary in the Telegraph, referring specifically to European laws involving the abuse of a dominant position. Other authoritative publications, also apparently briefed behind the scenes by Mercedes, referred specifically to the same laws. On the record, Mercedes’ competition vice-president Norbert Haug said in Malaysia: “I’m not sure who has signed. We’ve nothing currently to say.” |

‘Gazzetta’ proposes Perez, Sutil for Massa’s seatComments Off Felipe Massa’s formula one career appeared in deep crisis on Wednesday, as the Italian press lined up multiple candidates to replace him. Ferrari seemed to clear a path for the 30-year-old’s removal by moving to replace his F2012 chassis ahead of Sepang, “to clear up any doubts about the unusual performance of his car” last weekend in Australia. On Wednesday, the authoritative daily La Gazzetta dello Sport said Ferrari is considering dropping a driver mid-season for the first time since Rene Arnoux in 1985. The newspaper said Ferrari development driver Sergio Perez, who is currently at Sauber, is an option, as is the former Force India driver Adrian Sutil. A poll at Autosprint’s website, meanwhile, asked readers to nominate a worthy replacement for Massa — Mexican Perez scored the highest, with 44.7 per cent of the vote. Second was Trulli with 27.6pc, followed by Rubens Barrichello at 6.6pc. Only 1.3 per cent voted for 30-year-old Massa, who never returned to form following his serious accident in Hungary in mid 2009. |

Alonso ‘saved Ferrari from disaster’Comments Off Fernando Alonso was spared the Italian media’s wrath after Ferrari opened its 2012 campaign with the troubled F2012 car. The under-pressure Felipe Massa’s opening race, however, “was a nightmare”, the daily newspaper added. Jaime Alguersuari, the former Toro Rosso driver who is now a media analyst, also praised fellow Spaniard Alonso. “For Ferrari, it is an unique advantage to have a driver like Fernando Alonso,” he told El Mundo newspaper. “He did a sensational Sunday, with intelligence and ambition, which will push and raise the team, I’m sure.” Alonso remains confident. “There may be cars quicker than us now,” he is quoted by Britain’s Daily Mail, “but it’s like Manchester United or Chelsea who play badly for a game but still win 1-0. “Before this race we were working 24 hours (a day),” Alonso is quoted by Marca, “now it must be 25.” The Spanish press, however, is livid. “The fifth place is really a miracle,” said the sports daily Marca. “The car is ridiculous, rendering the team a midfielder.” Jenson Button, meanwhile, received universal praise from the international press corps, as did the fact that Red Bull’s dominance appears to have been knocked by McLaren. “That’s good news for everybody except (Sebastian) Vettel,” insisted Corriere dello Sport. The fight, however, has just begun. “Vettel turned the middling new Red Bull into a good race car,” said Gazzetta, referring to the German’s performance on Sunday, “which is a warning to the opposition. “He is still the world champion, and he will be hunting his first triumph of the year in Sepang.” Tuttosport, meanwhile, said Mercedes – which until Sunday’s race was the talk of the Melbourne paddock – was the “big disappointment” of the 2012 opener. |

Rivals and pundits believe the reigning champions are still leading the field, but the latest Barcelona-spec car – featuring a significantly different exhaust layout – did not complete many laps. Moreover, it also did not appear fast. “When I watched Webber’s long run on Saturday afternoon,” said an engineer for a rival team, “it was nothing special — not the laptimes nor the tyre wear.” Also unconvinced are the drivers, with Mark Webber saying the new car did not feel “massively different” to the earlier launch-version RB8. Sebastian Vettel, meanwhile, was dead last after just 23 laps on Sunday, and is quoted as saying: “It wouldn’t be fair for me to judge the upgrades, so we have to rely on the data collected by Mark.” Another rival engineer said there is visual evidence that the exhaust gases on the revised layout “are not going where they (Red Bull) want them to go”. |

Barcelona to propose race share deal to ValenciaComments Off Organisers of the Spanish grand prix are set to propose once again that Valencia shares a single annual date on the formula one calendar in future. F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone is pushing the Spanish organisers to agree a deal whereby they open up a date to a new host country by annually alternating their races. Valencia, however, is believed to have rejected a proposal along those “They said they were happy with how formula one had developed to date in Valencia and believed they could continue doing it the same way,” Barcelona official Germa Gordo, reportedly close to Catalonia president Artur Mas, told the DPA news agency. “We understand that although there was the rejection, the new Valencian government is prepared to consider a proposal,” he added. “The offer will be made in the coming weeks.” Marca newspaper, meanwhile, quoted a Valencian official as reiterating that “the issue of major events” is “under review”. “What we want is an agreement that is good for everyone,” the unnamed official said. It is believed informal talks between the regional authorities have already taken place. |

Press tips ‘small advantage’ for Red BullComments Off Most leading specialist publications see Red Bull as the continuing pacesetter in formula one. “They still have an advantage, but it’s smaller,” agreed Jenson Button, according to Brazil’s O Estado de S.Paulo. His boss Martin Whitmarsh added: “Red Bull has a solid, fast car, better than us in slow corners, but we’re better in the fast ones.” Switzerland’s Sonntagsblick, however, sees McLaren actually ahead of the energy drink-owned team, with Mercedes in third place and Force India a surprise fourth. “Red Bull is faster (than Mercedes),” said the German marque’s boss Ross Brawn, “and clearly a little more than we had hoped for,” he told Auto Motor und Sport. The international publications said Lotus, amid their chassis flaw problems, rank anywhere between third (Auto Motor und Sport) and eighth (Blick). According to the same press, Ferrari is in trouble, ranking no higher than fifth in the lists of the aforementioned publications — and the authoritative Auto Motor und Sport predicting nothing short of a disastrous season for the fabled Italian team. Felipe Massa is quoted by Spanish reporters as saying Barcelona was “a little more positive” than the Jerez test recently, and he was asked to rank the development of the new F2012 car out of ten. “Probably more than five. There is still much to do, but now we are closer than we were,” said the Brazilian. As for whether the car is a race winner, Massa added: “I hope so, but it’s very difficult to say anything in testing,” he is quoted by Finland’s Turun Sanomat. Indeed, Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi ended last week’s Barcelona test with the quickest time, but Blick’s veteran correspondent Roger Benoit warned against taking that too seriously. “When with the same tyres at the same time, (Mercedes’ Nico) Rosberg was a second faster per lap than Sauber’s Japanese,” he said. “In testing, the truth is seldom revealed — if the teams used lie detectors, they would all be laying exploded around us.” According to Britain’s Sun newspaper, Kobayashi confirmed: “I don’t think McLaren and Red Bull are slow. “We don’t really wish for wins or podiums. For us this is a bit too far away.” Instead, the midfield battle looks extremely tight, with Brazilian correspondent Livio Oricchio surmising that Sauber as well as Force India, Toro Rosso and Williams are all in there. “It will be race to race,” Toro Rosso’s Giorgio Ascanelli told the Italian press. “From what we’ve seen so far, this fight will be amazing.” And Oricchio concluded: “As for HRT and Marussia, who have not even presented their 2012 cars, they undoubtedly have capable people, but also almost as many difficulties.” |
