Brawn ‘back to normal’ after heart checks(0) Ross Brawn revealed on Wednesday he missed the recent Spanish grand prix to have checks on his heart. After handing over to his Mercedes deputy Nick Fry in Barcelona, fellow Briton Brawn is back in action as the team boss in Monte Carlo. Rumours hinted there was more to the story, but Brawn insisted to a German newspaper earlier on Wednesday that he was simply advised by doctors to take the weekend off after a night in hospital for checks. He then told reporters in Monaco his symptoms had been “arrhythmia”, or an irregular heartbeat, insisting he is “back to normal now”. Brawn, 57, joked the heart problem was triggered by watching an exciting football game on television. |

Maldonado wins, Alonso and Vettel lead title(0) F1′s astonishing season continues to live up to the hype, as a fifth driver and constructor on Sunday won the fifth grand prix of 2012. Not only is the victory Pastor Maldonado’s first, his walk up the steps at the Circuit de Catalunya was the first taste of the podium in his two-season F1 career. It’s also the first Venezuelan triumph in the sport’s history, and a hugely popular victory for Williams, the once-great British team headed by Sir Frank Williams, whose 70th birthday was warmly celebrated in the paddock on Saturday. “Boy did we need that,” said Williams on BBC television. And asked how he feels on Sky television, he smiled: “Relief.” “Some said Maldonado was a pay driver and he didn’t deserve his place in formula one but they’ll be eating their words now,” commented former team driver David Coulthard. “That was a fantastic drive,” added Coulthard, referring to Williams’ first win since Juan Pablo Montoya in 2004. Williams enthused: “I didn’t see him (Maldonado) make one single mistake.” “You can’t really fault him,” agreed Williams’ 1996 world champion Damon Hill. Amazingly, however, away from the champagne, Sebastian Vettel’s sixth place leaves him at the top of the drivers’ championship, and he is now neck-and-neck with Fernando Alonso, who finished second on Sunday in the improving Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton, who finished dead last on Sunday and finished eighth, is third in the points classification, ahead of Lotus’ Kimi Raikkonen. Finn Raikkonen finished third on Sunday, and is the favourite to become F1′s sixth different winner of 2012 in Monaco in a fortnight. “We showed we still have the speed,” the Lotus driver said after the Spanish grand prix. “If we had a few more laps, we could have fought for a victory.” |

Brawn’s Barcelona absence triggers rumours(0) A lack of official information has triggered speculation about Ross Brawn’s health. And another rumour is that his absence in Barcelona could be connected with Mercedes’ billion-dollar dispute with Bernie Ecclestone over the next Concorde Agreement. The German squad announced on Thursday that Bob Bell is leading the team in Barcelona because regular boss Brawn is back in Britain on doctor’s orders. Bild newspaper said the 57-year-old was given the advice in hospital earlier this week, following a dizzy spell at his home in England. “It’s more than the flu,” chief executive Nick Fry is quoted as saying, “but I can assure you that it’s nothing life threatening.” Indeed, a spokeswoman told us on Thursday that Brawn will be back to work at Monaco in a fortnight. For Spain, Brawn will watch the action on television. “We will still keep in touch,” Michael Schumacher revealed. “Ross cannot be replaced. That’s simply impossible.” |

Ferrari men know Spain crucial for title(0) Ferrari’s title tilt could hinge on the competitiveness of the updated F2012 this weekend in Barcelona. “What I want is to have a competitive car in Barcelona,” insisted the famous Italian marque’s president Luca di Montezemolo on Tuesday. “That’s what I’ve asked for,” he is quoted as saying by Brazil’s O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper. Ferrari had congregated at its Fiorano test track, to watch Jacques Villeneuve drive the 1979 single seater to mark the 30th anniversary of his father Gilles’ fatal crash. But Montezemolo’s disappointment is with the latest Ferrari, which has been heavily updated since the Bahrain grand prix three weeks ago. “Our technicians are confident, but we will have to see how our opponents have advanced too,” he added. O Estado de S.Paulo correspondent Livio Oricchio claimed “Montezemolo knows” that anything other than a big step forward in Barcelona will mean Ferrari has to “start thinking about” its 2013 project instead. “Now we have to make a quantum leap, to have a car that is more competitive, less difficult to drive, and gives confidence to the fans,” Montezemolo is quoted by La Stampa newspaper. “Let’s see how it goes in Spain,” he told Rai television. “I have asked for an extraordinary response from our engineers,” Montezemolo is also quoted as saying by Italy’s Sky Sport 24. La Gazzetta dello Sport, meanwhile, quoted lead driver Fernando Alonso as saying: “Our goal is to be world champions in November, and if we are to succeed then we must do better than we have done so far.” Team boss Stefano Domenicali agreed: “We expect a significant evolution that will bring us closer to the step we need. “The Spanish grand prix is definitely open, as is the championship. Webber helps fans get live coverage in Aus(0) Australian F1 fans are this week rejoicing in local hero Mark Webber even more than usual. Pressure applied by the Red Bull driver was reportedly instrumental in returning the sport to the live television airways in Australian capital cities. Fans were outraged with Australian broadcaster Ten’s decision to take formula one from its high definition channel One, which in turn meant viewers in Perth and Adelaide had no live coverage at all. Angry fans bombarded Ten’s Facebook and Twitter pages with criticism abuse, and urged Webber to help their cause. Webber obliged. “Come on (Ten), I hear our great Australian motor sport fans are not happy with rescheduling of timings of the GPs,” he wrote on Twitter. “Let’s go live.” Within an hour, Ten reinstated Perth and Adelaide’s live broadcasts — and in full HD. “The next time Ten wants to tangle with its motor sport audience, perhaps they should ask Mark Webber first,” read a report at The Australian newspaper. |

Salo: Raikkonen can win second title in 2012(0) Kimi Raikkonen can add a second title to his tally in 2012. That is the claim of the 2007 world champion’s countryman Mika Salo, who now commentates on Finnish television MTV3. In the fourth race of Raikkonen’s return to F1 from rallying, the 32-year-old last weekend challenged Sebastian Vettel for victory in Bahrain, finishing second for Lotus. Five years after his title with Ferrari, he is 19 points from the head of the 2012 drivers’ championship. “The most consistent team has been Lotus,” former grand prix driver Salo said. “They’ve been fast at every circuit so far. “In that sense, Kimi’s situation looks very good. I would not exclude it at all that he will be fighting at the very end of the championship, if Lotus is able to maintain the pace of development.” It is on Salo’s final point that Lotus’ 2012 season will really be made. “They (as Renault) also began the previous season just as well, but soon after they were nowhere,” observed the Swiss commentator Marc Surer, speaking on Austrian television Servus TV. “So the real question is ‘Do they have the resources to develop the car and stay where they are now?’” Even if Lotus’ challenge fades, the future for Raikkonen – who has surprised some experts with his re-adaptation to F1 after two years of rallying – is bright, Surer insisted. “I think he has shown everyone that he is still able to do just what he was doing before (leaving F1),” he said. “He is a lot younger than Schumacher, and if you look at the past ten years, he is probably one of the best talents that we have seen in F1.” Surer said he could therefore imagine Raikkonen leaving Lotus and returning to a ‘top’ team, but he wouldn’t know which one to recommend. “Everything is so balanced this year that it’s impossible to pick a car that he could win the championship in.” |

F1 assesses fallout after damaging Bahrain sagaComments Off With the F1 world now returned from Bahrain, the sport is assessing the fallout of one of the most controversial grands prix in history. The drivers were conspicuously quiet over the saga in the island Kingdom, but – with no contract tying him down – former Force India driver Adrian Sutil admitted he was glad he was not there. “In a situation like that, it is probably better not to go,” the German said on Sky Deutschland. “On the one hand, the decision was made (to go to Bahrain), on the other hand, it’s very difficult when there are so many problems in a country.” Red Bull reserve driver Sebastien Buemi, who has family living in Bahrain, does not agree at all. “I arrived on Monday and I had no problem — maybe there were a few more police than two years ago, but nothing happened to me,” the Swiss insisted on Austrian Servus TV. Force India and Sauber, however, witnessed Molotov cocktail attacks on their treks to and from the circuit. And Caterham team spokesman Tom Webb told the Sun that there was “one minor incident when one of our (hire) vans slowed down in traffic and its occupants saw a local youth on the side of the main road brandishing a bottle with a rag stuffed in its neck”. World champion and race winner Sebastian Vettel also admitted the feeling was tense in the paddock throughout the weekend. “It was not easy for anyone,” the Red Bull driver admitted, according to SID news agency, “but I’m glad that nothing happened to any of us (in F1).” And the Telegraph quotes Vettel adding: “Hopefully, we come back in the future when everything’s a little bit safer.” Reuters reports that Vodafone, the main sponsor of the half Bahrain-owned McLaren team, sent no staff to the country and expressed concerns to the British outfit. But Jim Wright, an F1 sponsorship expert, told the Guardian that he thinks while the sport’s image took a beating last weekend, sponsors will be happy. “Most teams handled a difficult decision very well,” he said. “On that basis I think a lot of people would be pleased with that and happy to get involved with them.” The television audience was also unaffected – even boosted – with the BBC reporting more viewers for Bahrain than Australia and Malaysia, and Germany revealing similarly strong figures. Still, there remains criticism. “Now is an opportunity to reflect,” former F1 driver Alex Zanardi told Tuttosport, “and make sure that major sporting events are assigned only to governments that deserve the honour of hosting them. “Ecclestone is brilliant and has made formula one what it is, but he can’t administer races at any cost and above all else,” insisted the Italian. Due to security fears, Force India sat out a practice session on Friday so that staff could return to their hotels in daylight. F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone was reportedly enraged, and according to rumours got his revenge by instructing Formula One Management’s television cameras to ignore the Silverstone based team’s cars in qualifying. “There was a bit of fuss about what we did,” deputy team principal Bob Fernley is quoted by Spain’s AS newspaper, “and it was not easy, but I think it turned out to be the right response. “We had a lot of pressure, our attitude was not well received,” he confirmed, “but I think that we had a duty of care to our employees, and to do the right thing by the team.” |

Alonso: ‘More treasure than deserved’ with F2012Comments Off Amid Ferrari’s performance crisis with the struggling F2012 car, the Italian team has emerged from the opening ‘flyaway’ races with a solid head of steam. He might be just fifth, but Fernando Alonso is a mere 10 points off the lead of the drivers’ world championship, after a see-sawing pecking order emerged from the overseas races in Australia, Malaysia, China and Bahrain. The Spanish driver admitted mere days ago that the F2012, at present, is perhaps the “sixth or seventh” best on the grid. But next up is the test at Mugello, where major upgrades to the car – so significant that some sections of the media are expecting a ‘new Ferrari’ – will be tested ahead of its Barcelona debut. Sepang winner Alonso’s latest surprise was to finish ahead of the best McLaren in Bahrain. “If we had said that beforehand, it would be unthinkable,” he told Antena 3 television. “It was another race where we have limited the damage pretty well. “We were eight points behind the leader, now it’s 10. We have spent the first four races outside Europe losing ten points, which I think is more treasure than we deserve. “For Montmelo (Barcelona) we have to be better. We have to stop depending on others and start depending on ourselves,” added Alonso. Asked how much he is expecting the F2012 to improve, the 30-year-old was coy. “I have said it could be one tenth, maybe two, one and a half … but we may not be in the same situation as before.” Alonso was also critical of the stewards’ decision to leave Nico Rosberg without a penalty on Sunday, after the German driver forced him off the circuit whilst defending position. “He also did the same to Hamilton, so it’s two to zero for him (Rosberg),” said Alonso. “But if there was a wall there, you would have to be talking to someone else now …” On Twitter, he sarcastically added: “I think you are going to have fun in future races. Vettel wins, takes title lead in BahrainComments Off F1′s surprise 2012 season has kept on bubbling in Bahrain. It is a measure of the excitement and unpredictability of the new championship that, just days after some media said the reigning title winner was in ‘crisis’, Sebastian Vettel won from pole and took the lead of the 2012 points standings. But the German only narrowly beat the returning 2009 world champion Kimi Raikkonen, with Lotus also completing the surprise podium as Romain Grosjean sampled the sport’s prestigious rostrum for the very first time. Vettel leads the championship by 4 points from Lewis Hamilton, who finished just eighth. Red Bull also leads the constructors’ chase, by 9 points from McLaren. Vettel is the fourth different winner in F1′s four races so far this year, following Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg. It is his first win since India last year. “How many good stories can we have in formula one in terms of the racing?” David Coulthard said on BBC television. “We’re only four races in and we’ve had such a mix of winners.” |

French broadcaster TF1 not in BahrainComments Off Another television broadcaster has pulled out of this weekend’s Bahrain grand prix. It had already emerged that Sky Deutschland, MTV3 Finland and Japan’s Fuji TV would not be reporting from the scene of the race in the troubled island Kingdom. Now, it emerges that the travelling regulars for France’s TF1 are not in Bahrain either. The French-language RMC Sport reported that, like the other broadcasters, the decision was taken “because of the unstable situation” in Bahrain. It has also emerged that Stefano Mancini, the regular F1 correspondent for Italy’s La Stampa newspaper, had trouble entering Bahrain this week. He reported that he encountered the trouble, which ended when the FIA intervened directly, due to an interview he conducted last week with a Bahraini activist. “You work for a newspaper?” Mancini said, recalling what he was asked by the polite uniformed official. “Write the name,” the official said. “My name?” enquired Mancini. “No, the newspaper,” the official clarified. |

Barrichello not ruling out Ferrari returnComments Off Just after backing his friend and countryman to bounce back, Rubens Barrichello has refused to rule out returning to formula one to replace the struggling Felipe Massa. After 19 consecutive seasons in F1, 39-year-old Barrichello had to switch to the Indycar series for 2012 after losing his race seat at Williams. Speaking to Brazilian television Sportv this week, however, the Brazilian said he cannot rule out returning to the grid — even with Ferrari. After a six-year tenure, Barrichello left Ferrari at the end of 2005 and – until now – has not looked back overly fondly on his treatment alongside the famous Italian team’s former number one Michael Schumacher. But in the wake of Massa’s recent performance struggles, Barrichello was voted in an Italian poll as the ideal replacement for the diminutive 30-year-old. When asked about Ferrari, Barrichello said this week: “I want the fans to understand that I don’t have any hard feelings. “If they called me today to go drive for them I would go. It was the best team I’ve ever driven for in terms of support, of creativity. But there were definitely some spicy episodes,” he added. With the backing of sponsors, Barrichello has signed on with the KV team in Indycar for 2012, but he insists he is “completely open” about returning to F1. “It would be something to think about,” he said in the televised interview on Wednesday. “I think anything can happen. I’m not saying it will happen, but I have to be ready.” Barrichello, the longest-serving driver in F1 history, revealed that he still enjoys the backing of Bernie Ecclestone, the sport’s influential chief executive. “He asked me if I was really going to race in Indycar and I told him ‘Yeah, because you didn’t find me a place in F1′,” he joked. “He said he will see what he can do about it. Really, you just have to see what happens, you have to stay open about it,” added Barrichello. |

Pressure mounts on F1 to cancel Bahrain againComments Off Damon Hill has changed his mind yet again on the controversial issue of Bahrain’s return to formula one later this month. Amid the debate about the island Kingdom’s return to the calendar in the wake of the cancelled 2011 event, the 1996 world champion said initially: “F1 must align itself with progression, not repression”. But he changed his tune after travelling with FIA president Jean Todt to Bahrain, insisting the situation on the ground had changed since the 2011 protests. “The grand prix is of huge economic importance to Bahrain. You’d almost be putting an economic sanction on Bahrain by pulling the race,” said Hill. But the Briton has now changed his mind again, apparently after the latest reports of violence on the streets and the reaction in the international media. Hill is quoted by the Guardian newspaper: “It would be a bad state of affairs, and bad for formula one, to be seen to be enforcing martial law in order to hold the race. “Looking at it today you’d have to say that (the race) could be creating more problems than it’s solving.” The former Williams driver is scheduled to attend this month’s Bahrain grand prix as a television analyst, but Hill brushed aside any thoughts about his lucrative contract with the British broadcaster Sky. “Some things are more important than contracts.” He also expressed misgivings about a recent media briefing in London, in which Bernie Ecclestone and team bosses stood with the Bahrain organisers and insisted the race is going ahead despite the continuing controversy. Damon said that event was “troubling insofar as it tried to represent the rioting in Bahrain as the result of bad press reporting and as a ‘youth’ issue. “I hope the FIA are considering the implications of this fully and that events in Bahrain are not seen as they are often sold, as a bunch of yobs throwing molotov cocktails, because that’s a gross simplification.” Writing in O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper, Brazilian correspondent Livio Oricchio admitted he thinks it would be “almost reckless” for F1 to travel to Bahrain this month. “At Sepang,” he wrote, “many team members were very concerned. They said their insurance companies had expressed concern about going to an Arab country in a belligerent state. “Personally, I don’t think we will be attacked, but it is the goal of the protesters to do anything so that the grand prix is not run. “The Arab Spring is very much alive in this small country in the Persian Gulf,” he admitted. And the Times of London’s Kevin Eason wrote on Twitter: “I have been thinking F1 should give Bahrain a chance but I am not convinced now that safety can be guaranteed.” |

Marko: Red Bull has work to do to defend titleComments Off Dr Helmut Marko has admitted Red Bull has work to do in order to return to the front in formula one. Having dominated F1′s recent history, the energy drink owned team is now behind McLaren in the constructors’ standings after two races in 2012, while its highest placed driver is Mark Webber in fourth. Austrian Marko, the motor racing advisor to Red Bull mogul Dietrich Mateschitz, insisted that Adrian Newey and his technical team have built a good car for 2012. “But it doesn’t help,” he told Salzburg television channel Servus TV, “if we are the fastest only in certain conditions, rather than consistently. “To tell you the truth, at the moment it’s almost as though the car decides when it is the fastest, and when it is not,” Marko said during the ‘Sport und Talk aus dem Hangar-7′ programme. The outspoken manager also vigorously defended Sebastian Vettel in the wake of the Narain Karthikeyan affair, after Red Bull’s world champion lost his temper with the HRT driver following a clash in Malaysia. Marko firmly pointed the finger at F1′s backmarkers. “We have told our team manager to talk to both Marussia and Hispania about getting their drivers to simply pay more attention,” he said. “They are driving in another league, they’re six or eight seconds slower, and so they need to watch out more than they do. “They are 12 points Vettel lost that could be crucial in the world championship,” added Marko. He also fended off the claim that Vettel’s behaviour in Malaysia, featuring the display of middle fingers and calling Karthikeyan an “idiot”, was not worthy of a role model. “You’ve just been in a race, you’ve seen the chance of possibly a third place go away — you’re naturally upset because he’s a human as well. “I think we can understand an emotional reaction,” added Marko. |

FIA still believes Mercedes F-duct legalComments Off The FIA appears to have waded back into the ‘F-duct’ debate, indicating that the Mercedes-style solution is fully legal. We reported on Monday that the saga looked set to continue into China next weekend, with some teams – notably Red Bull and Lotus – questioning the legality of the aerodynamic innovation. It had emerged that Lotus technical director James Allison has come up with another argument against the technology that will be posed to the FIA’s Charlie Whiting ahead of scrutineering in Shanghai next week. Christian Horner insists Red Bull and Lotus’ concerns are shared by others. “Believe me it’s not just Red Bull, I think there’s half the paddock that’s been looking at this,” he told British television Sky Sport’s The F1 Show. The Red Bull team boss revealed that Whiting left Malaysia wanting “to have a think about it”. So, the latest development is the re-release via the FIA website of an “edited version” of the technical briefing that Whiting gave to reporters in Australia last month. It is believed the complaining teams’ main objection to the Mercedes system is that it arguably uses ‘driver movement’ – the pressing of the DRS button – to be activated. Under the heading “Pressing the DRS button and the issue of ‘driver movement’”, the media briefing quotes Whiting as stating simply: “This is specifically allowed (in the rules).” Mercedes’ Ross Brawn is quoted by the BBC: “We call it the DRS, because that’s all it is. The purpose of the DRS is to improve overtaking and that’s what we’re trying to do.” Whiting’s stance in China, however, may not be the end of it. “Then the teams are faced with alternatives,” Horner explained. “Either accept it and get on it and maybe look at your own solution if that fits your car. “You’ve got the opportunity to protest if we were to feel – or any other team were to feel – that we didn’t agree with Charlie’s interpretation,” he added. |

Martin Brundle: Struggling Red Bull the ‘surprise’ of 2012Comments Off Martin Brundle has described Red Bull’s lack of pace as the biggest surprise of the 2012 season so far. After consecutive world championships with Sebastian Vettel, the energy drink-owned team was universally tipped as the pre-season favourite for yet another F1 title. But McLaren dominated in Australia before Ferrari and Sauber surprisingly set the pace recently in Malaysia. Former F1 driver Brundle admitted the struggling RB8 was the surprise of the opening salvo in 2012, but he also acknowledged that the turnaround might have been predicted. “When you look at how the regulations have changed, it’s almost like they were designed to slow the Red Bulls down,” the Sky television commentator told the website of the BBC programme Top Gear. “Doubling the torsional stiffness of the front wings, the way Red Bull were ‘flying’ their car down the track with lots of rake, nose close to the ground, exhausts helping to sort the high rear ride height out, it’s all been taken away from them,” added Brundle. An unnamed engineer at Red Bull has admitted the team was caught on the hop in the winter pre-season, when it became clear McLaren was better prepared for the new rules. “McLaren came with a (exhaust) system on the edge of legality,” the engineer told Germany’s Auto Bild, “and it was declared legal by the FIA. “So (Adrian) Newey had to adapt,” he added, referring to Red Bull’s last-minute decision to change tack at the very end of the pre-season test period. The message coming from the Milton Keynes based team, therefore, is that Red Bull is playing catch-up. “We need to understand the car better,” admits team advisor Dr Helmut Marko, “which is why for the next race (in China) we will have hardly any new parts.” So until he’s back at the front, F1′s formerly-dominant Vettel – who lashed out at backmarker Narain Karthikeyan recently in Malaysia – needs to adapt. Asked if the German was justified in calling his Indian rival an “idiot”, Brundle insisted: “No. “That’s just an angry man who hasn’t got a front-running car at the moment. He’s just frustrated.” |
