‘B’ Ferrari not ready yet(0) Ferrari will not run all of its planned car improvements at the Mugello test this week. “My information is that the new single seater is not ready,” reported Livio Oricchio, the correspondent for O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper. There has been speculation that, following Ferrari’s troubled start to the new championship with its F2012 car, the changes for the forthcoming Barcelona race will be so sweeping that it might be called a “B” version. But technical director Pat Fry reportedly told Oricchio that Ferrari designers are “staying with the (current) front suspension”; a reference to the Maranello based team’s innovative use of pullrod technology this year. And the well-informed journalist Dimitris Papadopoulos adds that, even though the Mugello-spec Ferrari will have a new nose, sidepods and wings, “there will be no new chassis”. |

Reports link James Key with Ferrari move(0) James Key could be the next formula one engineer to join F1′s struggling giant Ferrari. Multiple media sources, including the authoritative Italian specialist newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, say the Maranello based team is interested in Key, a 40-year-old Briton. Key’s career dates back to the Jordan days, continuing through the transition to Force India, and he eventually joined Sauber in 2010. He was the highly respected technical director at the Swiss team until earlier this year, and was therefore in charge of the impressive 2012 Sauber C31, amid speculation he had headed to Lotus’ sports car project. But the media reports, including in the major German daily Bild, say Ferrari is now interested, particularly because Key is already familiar with the Italian marque through Sauber’s use of the Ferrari drivetrain. However, when asked what truth there is to the Key rumours, Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni snapped: “Nothing, nada, niente!” |

McLaren not yet ready with own F-ductComments Off McLaren is not yet ready to roll out a Mercedes-style ‘F-duct’ to complement its highly competitive 2012 car. Despite Mercedes struggling with tyres in the actual races so far, the W03 is a standout qualifying performer, thanks in part to the so-nicknamed front and rear ‘super-DRS’ system. Red Bull, Lotus and perhaps even Ferrari are threatening to protest, but until now McLaren – with arguably the dominant package of the 2012 season so far – has stayed out of the argument. “We don’t have a strong view one way or the other,” technical director Paddy Lowe confirmed during the regular Vodafone media teleconference on Tuesday. The F-duct will remain a hot topic in China this weekend, with Lotus’ technical boss James Allison believed to be armed with two new arguments against its legality. It was thought McLaren was quite advanced with its own version of the system. But Lowe revealed: “Until we’ve got clarity it’s difficult for us to commit a huge about of effort in that direction. So that’s where we are at the moment.” He steered away from suggestions Mercedes, including boss Ross Brawn, have flouted the “spirit” of the recent F-duct ban. “There’s no such thing as the spirit of the rules,” insisted Lowe, admitting that if there was a ‘spirit’ of the DRS rule, the Mercedes system is “definitely” in breach. “The debate around whether they can keep that system on the car is not about whether it is in that spirit or not, it’s about whether the text of the regulations means they can’t,” he explained. |

More passing in 2012 than early last yearComments Off The 2012 season has kicked off promisingly, with more overtaking moves recorded in the first two races than in the same exciting period last year. The finding is significant, given the highly lauded contribution early in 2011 made by the new passing aid ‘DRS’, and new official supplier Pirelli’s heavily-degrading tyres. Finland’s Turun Sanomat newspaper said 2012 has so far broken even the all-time records of early last season, when there were 63 overtaking moves – excluding the first laps – in Australia and Malaysia 2011. This year, there were 70 passes in Australia-Malaysia combined. It bodes well for this weekend’s Chinese grand prix, after last year’s Shanghai race saw no fewer than 63 separate in-race overtakes, including Lewis Hamilton’s winning move on leader Sebastian Vettel. “China proved to be one of the most fascinating races in our first year, so we have a tough act to follow,” said Pirelli’s Paul Hembery. “However, the philosophy we have adopted this year actually extends the window of peak performance on the slick tyres, which means that the drivers should be able to race harder and closer,” he added. Yet another factor at the 2012 Chinese grand prix could be the weather, with F1′s travellers already sampling wet Shanghai roads early this week. That forecast would suit Malaysia winner Ferrari, with technical director Pat Fry admitting that the Italian team’s 2012 car is almost a second off the pace in the dry. “Damp, low grip conditions suit our car and flatter some of the issues we have at the moment,” he said. |

Red Bull ‘has a plan’ to bounce back in ChinaComments Off Red Bull is ready to start bouncing back from a difficult start to 2012. That is the claim of the energy drink owned team’s racing consultant Dr Helmut Marko, who acknowledged that Australia and Malaysia was not a good start to the campaign for a third-consecutive championship-winning season. Comparing the reigning world champions with McLaren, Ferrari’s technical director Pat Fry agreed on Tuesday: “I’ve been slightly surprised by Red Bull’s lack of pace.” Marko acknowledged: “Over the race distance (in Malaysia) we saw that (Sauber’s Sergio) Perez was the fastest,” the Austrian said on Servus TV. “In wet but also in dry conditions, the Sauber was absolutely the fastest one. “On the other hand, the whole package did not come together for us,” Marko insisted, referring specifically to bad pitstops, and broken radios. “There are so many things that have to come together. But we have a plan for how to deal with it for China, to solve our problems. “I’m confident that we will get it back together sooner or later. “It makes things of course more exciting, although not quite as easy for us,” he smiled. |

FIA still believes Mercedes F-duct legalComments Off The FIA appears to have waded back into the ‘F-duct’ debate, indicating that the Mercedes-style solution is fully legal. We reported on Monday that the saga looked set to continue into China next weekend, with some teams – notably Red Bull and Lotus – questioning the legality of the aerodynamic innovation. It had emerged that Lotus technical director James Allison has come up with another argument against the technology that will be posed to the FIA’s Charlie Whiting ahead of scrutineering in Shanghai next week. Christian Horner insists Red Bull and Lotus’ concerns are shared by others. “Believe me it’s not just Red Bull, I think there’s half the paddock that’s been looking at this,” he told British television Sky Sport’s The F1 Show. The Red Bull team boss revealed that Whiting left Malaysia wanting “to have a think about it”. So, the latest development is the re-release via the FIA website of an “edited version” of the technical briefing that Whiting gave to reporters in Australia last month. It is believed the complaining teams’ main objection to the Mercedes system is that it arguably uses ‘driver movement’ – the pressing of the DRS button – to be activated. Under the heading “Pressing the DRS button and the issue of ‘driver movement’”, the media briefing quotes Whiting as stating simply: “This is specifically allowed (in the rules).” Mercedes’ Ross Brawn is quoted by the BBC: “We call it the DRS, because that’s all it is. The purpose of the DRS is to improve overtaking and that’s what we’re trying to do.” Whiting’s stance in China, however, may not be the end of it. “Then the teams are faced with alternatives,” Horner explained. “Either accept it and get on it and maybe look at your own solution if that fits your car. “You’ve got the opportunity to protest if we were to feel – or any other team were to feel – that we didn’t agree with Charlie’s interpretation,” he added. |

Toni Cuquerella, new Technical Director of HRT Formula 1 TeamComments Off Engineer Toni Cuquerella assumes, as of today, the role of Technical Director of HRT Formula 1 Team. Cuquerella, besides being at the head of technical development, will continue to exercise his role as the maximum figure of engineering on the track. Since Geoff Willis left the team in September of 2011, the position of Technical Director has not been occupied. The decision was then made for the development of the F112 to take place at the team’s technical office in Munich, at the hands of Holzer Group and the Chief of Aerodynamics, Stephane Chosse, under the supervision of the, until last February, Technical Coordinator Jacky Eeckelaert. With the F112 put on the track, it’s now time to work on its development and evolution and so, the naming of a person to lead this project is necessary. And no one better than Toni Cuquerella, with his experience in Formula 1 and his praiseworthy work at the fore of HRT, to take it on. The appointment of the Spanish engineer at the head of the technical department is a new step in the new management’s desire to centralize and take control of all the activities related to the design and development of the car. This will optimize the coordination of the different departments, helping to meet the set targets, and also rationalize resources. Toni Cuquerella, Technical Director: “The role of Technical Director implies a great amount of responsibility in terms of coordination and decision making. That’s why I’m very proud that the management considers me to be the most adequate person to carry it out. Until now there was a lot of dispersion from within the technical team and that had its repercussions in the concept and quality of the F112. My priority is to solve the current car’s problems to then develop it to its maximum potential, whilst also unifying and expanding the technical department, but I’m confident that we have a good work base and a clear direction to advance and have a good project for the future”. The transition from the previous project to this one hasn’t been easy and a lot of work has been carried out that without vital figures such as him wouldn’t have been possible. But now, with the car already on the track, it was important to take control and count on someone influential at the head of the technical office. And because of his experience, judgment and knowledge, Toni’s profile fitted in perfectly”. Profile Antonio Cuquerella was born in Gandía, Spain 38 years ago. He did a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Universidad Politécnica of Valencia. In 1999 he had his first role as a race engineer for Campos GP at the Open Nissan. After this he worked in various national and international motorsport categories before becoming Chief Engineer of the Toledo WTCC and Leon WTCC projects at SEAT Sport. In 2006 he arrived in Formula 1 as a race engineer for Super Aguri F1, where he spent two years before moving to BMW Sauber F1 Team, acting in the same role with driver Robert Kubica. Towards the end of 2009 he decided to take a risk and back Adrián Campos in a project to establish a new Spanish team in Formula 1, becoming the Chief Race Engineer for Campos Meta. Since the team’s first season, Toni has been the Chief Race and Test Engineer and has been a key figure both in the early days and this new stage of HRT and now he assumes an even more important role as the Technical Director. |

In Australia and Malaysia, the threat of results protests hung over the opening races of 2012, due to some teams – chiefly Red Bull and Lotus – questioning the legality of the aerodynamic innovation on Mercedes’ 2012 car. Until now, the FIA has declared that the system – working in unison with the driver-operated DRS – is fully legal. But it has emerged that Lotus technical director James Allison has come up with another argument against the technology that will be posed to the FIA’s Charlie Whiting ahead of scrutineering for next weekend’s Chinese grand prix. It is believed that while Ferrari is on Red Bull and Lotus’ side at present, Mercedes-powered McLaren is currently staying out of the debate altogether. |

Costa says Ferrari lacked ‘style’ over sackingComments Off Aldo Costa has revealed he is unhappy with Ferrari’s comments in the wake of his departure last year. The Italian was stepped down as the famous team’s technical director, and he switched to Mercedes before the German marque made a significant step forwards with its 2012 car. He has remained quiet about his treatment by Ferrari until now, telling Autosprint magazine that the Maranello marque lacked “style and professionalism” as it handled its restructuring. Asked for more information, he said Ferrari explained “things that not only myself but also the whole world of formula one knows is not the truth”. Costa confirmed that he was referring to Ferrari’s suggestion that he lacked “creativity”. Still, he said he is not happy to see his old team struggling to make it into Q3 with the aggressive F2012. “I still have so many friends in Maranello, but now I want to be 100 per cent engaged on succeeding with Mercedes.” He said the Ross Brawn-led team has a “different” approach to Ferrari’s “that makes it easier to do things”. |

Brawn plays down ‘new F-duct’ hypeComments Off Ross Brawn has moved to play down the hype surrounding Mercedes’ new so-called ‘F-duct’ solutions. It is the talk of the paddock, and in Friday’s second practice session, Michael Schumacher topped the times with the W03 car, featuring front and rear F-ducts. When asked about the new ‘F-ducts’, team boss Brawn said in Melbourne: “I’m surprised they (people) are calling it that, because I don’t quite know what that means. “We have an interesting system on the car and it’s not complicated at all, so I’m sure other teams are looking at it and they need to decide if it’s worthwhile or not.” It is such a big talking point this weekend because, in 2009, the Brackley based team – then Brawn GP – raced to the title as the first to perfect a double-diffuser. And last year, it was the now-banned blown exhausts that set the pace. But Brawn insists that the new F-ducts are “not in the same magnitude” as those title-winning innovations. “It’s obviously helpful,” he admitted, “that’s why we’re doing it but it’s not a massive performance gain.” Nonetheless, the arms race has begun. “That’s going to cost a lot of money,” Sauber’s technical director Matt Morris told Auto Motor und Sport. |

Ferrari says Red Bull ‘half a second ahead’Comments Off Pat Fry, Ferrari’s technical director, thinks Red Bull remains clearly ahead of the F1 field. But Briton Fry told the Guardian newspaper: “I think Red Bull are ahead of the rest at the moment. Maybe half a second. “We’re guessing about fuel levels used in testing but I would say Red Bull are between five and seven tenths ahead of everyone else.” Fry recently wrote off Ferrari’s chances of a podium this weekend in Melbourne, but – at least in the most recent hours – drivers Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso are sounding more positive. “At the moment we don’t know who is fast and who is not,” insisted Alonso, according to Marca. “Don’t pay much attention to what is said. “We are not even going to know anything until Malaysia — a normal circuit.” HRT’s Pedro de la Rosa, at least, is daring a prediction. “Maybe (Sebastian) Vettel will win again, but if he does, he will have more sweat on his shirt,” the Spaniard is quoted by EFE agency. As for Ferrari’s apparent problems, de la Rosa commented: “All I know is what I read, but think about how much time has passed since the last test. “Two or three weeks in formula one is a world.” |

De la Rosa: Ferrari ‘better than people think’Comments Off Pedro de la Rosa has admitted he senses a little too much pessimism from the Ferrari camp. De la Rosa, the veteran Spanish driver for HRT, thinks there is an element of truth to that. “They are better than people think,” he told Cadena Ser radio. “On the other hand I know that there are teams that are stronger, but I wouldn’t rule out the podium — I assure you,” the 41-year-old insisted. “What happens is you try to remove the pressure that is on you. As for me, I see Ferrari in a better shape than the sort of negative feeling that exists here in Spain. “I think they have their problems like everyone else, but their car is faster than it seems.” It was Pat Fry, Ferrari’s new technical director, who announced recently that the F2012 is not currently a podium contender. “This is not something that goes through my head,” Felipe Massa admitted to reporters in Sao Paulo this week. “It is true we tested a type of exhaust and realised it was not the right thing. But last year everyone was 90 per cent sure we would fight for the title and then we did not. “I won’t hide that we are not 100 per cent satisfied with what we did in the three test sessions in Spain. “But we have a very strong team and I have lots of faith in their capacity to be able to develop the chassis during the season,” he added. |

‘In two weeks we’ll know’ says fast RaikkonenComments Off Kimi Raikkonen ended the 2012 pre-season with this year’s fastest Barcelona laptime, but the Finn is not yet predicting a win in Melbourne at the end of next weekend. Lotus – fast at Jerez and also at the Circuit de Catalunya – is expected to trail pacesetters Red Bull and McLaren this season. Yet in reality, the situation is deliberately clouded: Red Bull had a bad final day of testing on Sunday, but when he was running, rivals expected Sebastian Vettel’s RB8 was brimmed with fuel. And when he came into the pits, there was the odd sight of team mechanics using large umbrellas to hide the car’s newly-added secrets, including the sidepod exhaust. “I think that’s a question for Charlie Whiting,” said Ferrari’s technical director Pat Fry when asked about the legality of the solution. Even so, Red Bull’s position of dominance seems to have been somewhat eroded for 2012, with Mercedes chief Ross Brawn suggesting the RB8 is closely matched by its rivals unless the team has been “running a huge amount of fuel”. Sebastian Vettel told DPA news agency: “McLaren are strong. Mercedes are definitely stronger than last year and Lotus and perhaps some other teams should not be forgotten — Sauber, Force India. “Ferrari seem to be having some difficulties,” added the reigning world champion. World champion Vettel’s final comment appears undoubtedly true, with the famous Italian team’s drivers oddly banned from speaking with the media while technical boss Fry confessed that all is not well. “I’m always pessimistic,” said the Briton, who said a podium for Ferrari in Melbourne is not likely. “I’m disappointed with our performance at the moment.” Fernando Alonso, meanwhile, ignored his media muzzle and told Spanish television at a football game: “In the first races we will suffer — we are not yet at 100 per cent. “We’re not in as good shape as (Barcelona players) Messi and Iniesta,” he is quoted by Barca TV. But for now, it’s all talk, and so the reticent Raikkonen summed it up well: “Like I said, I don’t know, probably no one does,” he is quoted by Germany’s Sport1. “In two weeks, we’ll know.” |

Arms-race speeds up even before first raceComments Off At the front of the field in 2012, before a single racing lap has even turned, the well-known formula one arms-race has already begun. On the RB8, the major difference was the Sauber-style exhaust, after designer Adrian Newey was reportedly “impressed” with the 2012 solution devised by the Swiss midfield team. “It’s effectively a completely new (Red Bull) car,” said the BBC’s technical analyst Gary Anderson, according to the Guardian. The high-profile Red Bull upgrade was the perfect time for McLaren to quietly unveil its own heavily modified car, Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reported. “Did you see that McLaren have rebuilt half their car?” Force India technical director Andrew Green is quoted as saying. One new innovation on the MP4-27, apparently, is a Mercedes-like front wing W-duct. “The upgrade is a major step forward; better than we expected,” said Jenson Button. Elsewhere, the noises are not so positive: Ferrari stridently denied internet rumours Felipe Massa has been sacked, and then gagged both the Brazilian and his teammate Fernando Alonso from speaking to the media. “The decision has been taken to keep the whole team fully focused on the job and there is not any polemic intent behind it,” the team insisted. But while happily listing Red Bull’s likely contenders for 2012, Mark Webber admitted Ferrari’s form remains a “mystery”. Even less is known about those at the rear of the grid, with Marussia and HRT still yet to launch their 2012 cars. The Spanish team has sought permission at late notice to do a “filming day” with its new machine in Barcelona on Monday, while Marussia wants to run at Silverstone in the coming days. At Marussia, the hold-up was caused by the FIA’s more stringent than ever crash tests. “We’re going to make sure we get it right this time,” team boss John Booth told the BBC. |

Expert thinks Lotus playing down chassis crisisComments Off Lotus is grappling with a major problem less than one month before the start of the 2012 season. “We’ll put the right measures in place and we will be able to fix the problem before next week,” said technical director James Allison. But Gary Anderson, formerly the designer of Jordan and Jaguar cars, believes Lotus is playing down the problem. “You would have thought they could have fixed it overnight — chassis are made of carbon fibre composite so you’d be looking to bond new strengthening parts on,” he told the BBC. “In my experience, if you can’t do it in 24 hours, I don’t think you can do it at all. I wouldn’t be surprised if this meant they needed a new chassis, which would make it touch and go for the first race.” Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport thinks Lotus did not experience the fundamental problem at Jerez last week because the Circuit de Catalunya is a much more demanding circuit. Meanwhile, Red Bull’s world champion Sebastian Vettel was Tuesday’s fastest as the second of three group tests began, but he admitted Lewis Hamilton – in the new McLaren – was also impressive. “Ferrari is a bit of a secret at this stage and nobody knows whether they are really good or really bad,” admitted the German. |
