Ecclestone says Mercedes deal ’80 per cent’ done(0) Bernie Ecclestone claims he is close to reaching an agreement with Mercedes over the future of the German marque’s involvement in formula one. The parties have been at loggerheads over the F1 chief executive’s refusal to offer to Mercedes the same Concorde Agreement deal reached with other top teams Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull. In response, it has been suggested not only that the situation threatened the sport’s floatation plans, but that Mercedes could sensationally quit F1 at the end of this year. “We are now 80 per cent there,” Ecclestone told the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag in Barcelona. “The other 20 per cent, we will get there soon,” he added. “We have spoken with several Mercedes managers. I am sure we will see more of Mercedes in formula one.” Bild said the deal being discussed between Ecclestone and the Stuttgart based carmaker will see Mercedes in F1 at least through 2020. Norbert Haug, however, sounded surprised. “I have to apologise, but we don’t want to give any information at the moment about the state of the negotiations,” Mercedes’ motor racing vice-president insisted. |

Haug denies Mercedes quitting F1(0) Norbert Haug has denied reports Mercedes is on the verge of quitting F1. London newspaper The Times’ F1 correspondent Kevin Eason reported that the German carmaker has conducted a study into how the withdrawal could be effected. He said the reason for Mercedes pulling out would be because, unlike Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull, the Stuttgart marque has not been offered a place on F1′s post-floatation board. When asked about Eason’s report, Mercedes’ competition vice-president Haug insisted to Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport: “There is absolutely no truth to that.” The report said negotiations between Mercedes and F1 bosses over the next Concorde Agreement are ongoing. British spat could drive Mercedes out of F1(0) A spat between two Britons could drive the German giant Mercedes out of formula one, according to a new media report. F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone recently confirmed he is at loggerheads with Mercedes over the next Concorde Agreement. But at the same time, he insisted that the Stuttgart marque is “very important to formula one. I have always supported them and I will always,” he is quoted by Auto Motor und Sport. Indeed, Mercedes has its own and newly-winning works team, powers the marquee McLaren outfit, and also supplies engines to Force India. Ecclestone’s dispute is with fellow Englishman Ross Brawn, who is the Brackley based Mercedes GP team’s principal. “I have spoken to the team manager (Brawn) about it (the dispute) and he seems to believe that the team has won a few world titles and about 80 races since the Tyrrell days,” said the 81-year-old. Sport Bild reports that Ecclestone is refusing to give in to Brawn’s demands for extra Concorde Agreement entitlements for past title successes and history. The magazine said the relationship has become so intense that Ecclestone has even refused to give a joint interview with Brawn. “He (Brawn) was never very nice to me,” the F1 ‘supremo’ is quoted as saying. The German report said there is a risk Mercedes will, as a result of the ‘ice age’ between the British duo, pull the plug on its entire F1 involvement. |

Ferrari approached Sauber amid Massa rumoursComments Off Amid speculation regarding Felipe Massa’s immediate future, Sergio Perez’s father has revealed that Ferrari approached Sauber. Earlier, Sauber driver Perez played down the rumours about Massa’s future, including the suggestion he was at the very top of Ferrari’s replacement list. “Sergio is focused one hundred per cent on (performing in) Malaysia,” the 22-year-old Mexican’s father Antonio is quoted by the Spanish-language Medio Tiempo. Perez snr’s son is the cream of Ferrari’s development driver ‘academy’ programme. “Since last year, Ferrari has had three drivers: Alonso, Massa and Perez,” he said. “‘Checo’ has a great relationship with the team but I can say today that Perez is signed only with Peter Sauber.” Nonetheless, it has been suggested Ferrari made an approach to Sauber recently, amid Massa’s performance slump. “Yes, Monisha (Kaltenborn), who is the chief executive of Sauber, confirmed that Ferrari people approached her to talk about Sergio,” said his father Antonio. At the very least, Perez is a candidate for Massa’s seat next year. “That would be a good package,” the Mexican answered when asked about the potential pairing of his son with Fernando Alonso. “I see it only as a matter of time. We have to wait and be patient rather than distract Checo from what he is doing now. “Sergio was not even aware of the statements made by Ferrari: he was training and focused on his fitness,” added Perez snr. Luca di Montezemolo, Ferrari’s president, urged calm over the famous team’s current situation, including the calls for Massa’s scalp. “I understand that the fans are disappointed,” he is quoted by Stuttgarter Nachrichten newspaper, “but I ask them to remain calm. “We must remain calm and focused.” Still, the rumour mill waits for nobody, and even Ferrari’s official ‘Tweet’ about the “reasonable job” done by Massa on Saturday did not go unnoticed. “I take that to mean, ‘You’re useless!’ German RTL commentator Christian Danner joked. |

Mercedes could quit F1 over commercial dealsComments Off Mercedes could quit formula one or challenge Bernie Ecclestone in court, after it emerged top rivals Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull have agreed new commercial deals. With the FOTA alliance crumbling, F1 chief executive Ecclestone announced on Saturday that he has agreed terms with the “majority” of teams. In addition to the three top teams, it is believed Lotus, Toro Rosso, Sauber and Force India have also signed up. That leaves Mercedes and Williams apparently yet to agree, while it is believed the three bottom teams Caterham, Marussia and HRT have not even seen a copy of the new Concorde Agreement. Mercedes would not comment publicly. “We would like to ask for your understanding that our team currently has nothing to say on this matter,” said a spokesman. Behind the scenes, however, high-level sources close to the Brackley based team admitted they are unhappy that the terms of the deal heavily favour the top three teams. One bonus, for example, is for teams who have not changed their name. Media outlets including PA Sport and London’s Telegraph were told by the sources that the Stuttgart marque could challenge Ecclestone’s methods against European Union competition law. Or the carmaker and engine supplier could simply quit F1. “It is understood the carmaker and parent company Daimler are prepared to play hardball”, wrote Tom Cary in the Telegraph, referring specifically to European laws involving the abuse of a dominant position. Other authoritative publications, also apparently briefed behind the scenes by Mercedes, referred specifically to the same laws. On the record, Mercedes’ competition vice-president Norbert Haug said in Malaysia: “I’m not sure who has signed. We’ve nothing currently to say.” |

Mercedes eyes Hamilton as Schumacher successorComments Off Lewis Hamilton has been earmarked by Mercedes as a potential replacement for Michael Schumacher beyond the end of this season. The newspaper said Briton Hamilton, the 2008 world champion whose McLaren deal ends this year, is the ‘plan B’ should seven time world champion return to retirement before his 44th birthday. Bild am Sonntag said Mercedes already knows Hamilton after powering his F3 title in 2005. “If we had a plan B already,” motor sport vice-president Norbert Haug is quoted as saying, “we would not be well advised to talk about it in public. “Before we talk to Michael, this is not a topic,” he insisted. F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone said recently he doubts Hamilton will see out his career with McLaren. “If he doesn’t perform this year he’ll be looking to move on. And the team, maybe, will also be looking to him to move on,” the 81-year-old Briton said. According to Bild, however, more than 50 per cent of German fans surveyed want Marussia’s Timo Glock to replace Schumacher. Hamilton secured 3.9 per cent of the vote. “This is all just speculation,” a Mercedes spokesman is quoted by Germany’s Sport1. “There are no negotiations with any drivers and we will only speak with Michael at the appropriate time. “For now our entire focus is on the start of the season.” |

Red Bull hits back at Schu’s staff limit jibeComments Off Dr Helmut Marko has hit back at Michael Schumacher after the seven time world champion accused Red Bull of breaching the rules about staff numbers. Earlier this month, the Mercedes driver referred to a clause in the Resource Restriction Agreement when he said “certain teams don’t respect that”. “If you take the number of people we have compared with Red Bull, that is very different,” said Schumacher. Indeed, Mercedes employs 400 people at Brackley, plus 20 for administration and marketing in Stuttgart. Red Bull, meanwhile, has 550 staff at Milton Keynes. The latter’s Marko told Auto Bild: “The agreement never came into force. We were reluctant because it (the staff limits) were purely for the chassis development.” He said if F1 teams want to limit staff numbers, then the limit should also apply to the development of engines. For instance, Mercedes employs another 400 people for the development of its F1 engines, while Red Bull’s supplier – Renault – has just 170 staff at Viry-Chattilon. “Mr Schumacher should be asking how many people work on his Mercedes engine in Brixworth,” said Marko. “Why should we make concessions in the development of the chassis when Mercedes has every freedom for the engine?” |

Vettel tells di Resta – ‘see you on 2011 grid’Comments Off Sebastian Vettel has told Paul di Resta he hopes to see his former F3 championship rival and teammate on the formula one grid next year. Scottish driver di Resta, who is a year older than the new F1 champion, beat 23-year-old Vettel to the F3 Euro Series title by 11 points in 2006 when they were both with the French ASM team. So when Mercedes-Benz hailed its new DTM champion in Stuttgart on Thursday, Vettel appeared by video link and according to motorsport-magazin.com told di Resta: “I hope to see you in formula one next year.” And the SID news agency quotes Vettel as adding: “Hopefully it will not be as tight as it was in F3!” Di Resta, who won five F3 races compared to Vettel’s four in 2006, is now strongly linked with a Force India race cockpit for 2010 after serving as third driver this season. He is reportedly in competition with Vitantonio Liuzzi and Nico Hulkenberg, with Adrian Sutil saying again this week that he has agreed a deal to stay with the Silverstone based team in 2011. “We have reached an agreement. The signature is a mere formality, which will happen,” DPA news agency quotes Sutil as having told the broadcaster Eurosport. “The drivers who do not have a contract yet want to join the team because it is the best team with an open place,” the German added. |

Mercedes: No F1 discussion with chairman ZetscheComments Off According to well-known French commentator Jean-Louis Moncet, a notable meeting involving the Mercedes GP team took place on Monday. Moncet wrote in his Auto Plus blog that the video conference would involve the Stuttgart based Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche, and the Brackley based team’s Ross Brawn, Norbert Haug, Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg. He said the “various statements by members of the team to the media” would be discussed, even though a Mercedes spokesman rubbished the report. And although Mercedes insists the comments were taken out of context, Moncet could be referring to Rosberg’s quoted claims about being frustrated by a lack of development progress. There have also been hints from Rosberg, Schumacher and Brawn that development of the 2010 car could be stopped in favour of focusing on next year’s project. But in a team statement late last week, those figures insisted the team is still working hard on the W01. “It’s been tough for us over the last few races but we are working hard to improve and I am confident we will get there,” said Rosberg. However, a headline in the German daily Die Welt said “Expectation and reality are far apart at Mercedes”. The article included Zetsche’s warning of early this year when he said that “If there are clear indications that we can use our money more effectively outside of formula one, we will have to take a new decision”. And former Jordan and Jaguar designer Gary Anderson said: “The people around Brawn understand the car they have built for 2010 in the same way they understood it in the second half of last year.” But Bernie Ecclestone thinks Mercedes needs more time to get up to speed with its own team. “Of course it takes a bit of time to revive a myth, but I am sure they are on the right track and that the Silver Arrows will come back to full strength,” said the F1 chief executive. Weber back in court, facing jailComments Off Jul.5 (GMM) Willi Weber is back in court and if convicted almost certainly faces jail. Michael Schumacher’s long time manager, now handling the young career of Williams rookie Nico Hulkenberg, was sentenced to probation and a hefty fine by a German court two years ago. The case surrounded the moving of money and assets from a merchandise company before it was declared insolvent. For related matters regarding the fraudulent bankruptcy of the ‘Pole Position Marketing’ company, 68-year-old Weber has now returned to a Stuttgart district court on the charge of embezzling EUR 1.2 million. German language reports indicate that a conviction of the multiple charges could result in a hefty sentence. “I believe in justice,” Weber told Bild. “If I have done something wrong, I stand by my responsibility.” In the case, 21 court days are scheduled until 28 October. |

Mercedes introduced its team in StuttgartComments Off Although the single-seated will not be seen until next week, the Grand Prix Mercedes motor-racing team introduced today, at the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart, its two official pilots for the next season: Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg, both from Germany. Before the media and a great crowd, the car that was used last year by the British Jenson Button, under the Brawn GP ‘Scuderia” was displayed, but with the silver color that the racing-team will show during the 2010 campaign. “The German Formula One ‘Scuderia’ is now ready. A bit of German pride is legitimate,” declared Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Daimler, when the design of the new silver racing cars was presented at the Mercedes Museum at Stuttgart. The goal of the motor-racing team is clear: the World Championship title. However, Zetsche chose not to risk himself and stated that the long-term targets do not necessarily have to be complied with in the first season. “We have a clearly defined goal which is to become World Champions, but that doesn’t mean this has to happen during the first year,” Zetsche said. “We’re a new team. Give us some time,” he added. Next week, the first official tests will take place at the Ricardo Tormo de Cheste circuit (Valencia, which will also be the site where the definitive single-seated named ‘MGP W01′ will be presented for the first time. On the other hand, during the team’s official introduction, Schumacher, received most of the attention and declared: “Last summer, I already experienced how people received me, and frankly their reaction was a real surprise for me. “It’s exciting and gives me a very warm feeling. I’m very grateful with my fans. Their reaction is a great motivation and driving force for me,” he added. On his part, Rosberg said he’s looking forward to participate and is very happy. Driving a Mercedes is a dream come true for him.. “It’s clear that this is a very, very special thing; a dream come true. I’m looking forward to trying the new car out, and to work with people like Norbert (Haug), Ross (Brawn) and Nick (Fry), and to have Michael (Schumacher) as team-mate; that’s big. It’s going to be a great season,” pronounced the second German of the racing-car team. The thing being that Mercedes constitutes an only-German team. The excitement was quite visible in Dieter Zetsche’s face. |
