Brawn ‘back to normal’ after heart checks(0) Ross Brawn revealed on Wednesday he missed the recent Spanish grand prix to have checks on his heart. After handing over to his Mercedes deputy Nick Fry in Barcelona, fellow Briton Brawn is back in action as the team boss in Monte Carlo. Rumours hinted there was more to the story, but Brawn insisted to a German newspaper earlier on Wednesday that he was simply advised by doctors to take the weekend off after a night in hospital for checks. He then told reporters in Monaco his symptoms had been “arrhythmia”, or an irregular heartbeat, insisting he is “back to normal now”. Brawn, 57, joked the heart problem was triggered by watching an exciting football game on television. |

Static electricity may have caused Williams fire(0) It is believed static electricity could have sparked Williams’ garage fire two weeks ago in Barcelona. Even in the Monte Carlo paddock, the huge Spanish blaze was still a hot topic. The British team and the FIA conducted investigations, but there has been no definite finding about the cause of the fire. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reported suggestions simple static electricity, caused by the specific weather conditions and the fact a container was not grounded at the time, was the culprit. Williams has scrambled to be ready for Monaco, but the only obvious sign of the fire on Wednesday was one missing mechanic, who is still recovering from burns. “He’s on the road to recovery,” said co-owner Toto Wolff. It is believed the mechanic was pumping fuel from one container to another when the fire started. Wolff confirmed the static electricity theory. “This is extremely rare. The weather may have played a role, as we had low pressure over Barcelona that day,” he explained. Auto Motor und Sport said Williams lost mainly computers in the fire, but the crucial data survived. Of the team’s 150 radios, only 40 were intact. Wolff said Bruno Senna’s chassis survived because of the partitions at the back of the main pit area. “They are flame retardant,” he confirmed. “This meant the fire did not come beyond the back (area). The walls melted in the heat, but they didn’t burn.” And financially, the Oxfordshire based team is completely undamaged, due to insurance. |

Brawn returns to paddock, praising Schu ‘quality’(0) Ross Brawn should be firing on all cylinders as he returns to the pitwall in Monaco this weekend. Mercedes’ team principal sat out the recent Spanish grand prix due to illness, but a scarcity of extra information triggered speculation. One rumour was that he is seriously ill, whilst another was that his absence may in fact be due to his German employer’s high-stakes spat with Bernie Ecclestone. The latter theory gained traction since Barcelona, with acting team boss Nick Fry taking a much higher than usual profile, including naming Paul di Resta as a possible 2013 successor for Michael Schumacher. Explaining his absence, Brawn told Bild newspaper: “On the Tuesday before Barcelona I felt unwell so I went to the doctor and then stayed a night in hospital for some tests. “When I got home, I decided on the advice of doctors to give myself a weekend off, to be sure that I am fit for Monaco,” the Briton said. Partly because of Brawn’s deputy Fry’s recent comments, and also due to his paltry points tally and his crash with Bruno Senna, rumours about Schumacher’s future have intensified since Spain. “A lot has been said and written,” acknowledged Brawn, “but we should not forget that we – the team – have let him down in three of the fives races, not delivering the job we should have. “We must do better,” Brawn, who worked closely with Schumacher during the seven time world champion’s ultra successful Ferrari era, added. “We saw Michael’s real quality again in the first race, so it’s for that reason that I believe we will see him on the podium this year.” As for a possible contract extension for the 43-year-old, Brawn insisted: “When the time comes, we will sit down together and talk about the future. “I’m sure it will become clear very quickly in what direction we will go.” |

Ferrari say Massa contender for 2013 race seat(0) Ferrari has played down rumours it is close to immediately ousting Felipe Massa, insisting it is possible the struggling Brazilian will still be in a red car next year. On Twitter, the famous Italian team said the latest rumours – including a claim that former Virgin driver Jerome d’Ambrosio is a candidate to replace Massa in 2012 – are “funny”. But it was Ferrari itself who fuelled the speculation, publishing a statement on its website that read like a warning to Massa. “It was a very carefully-worded statement, wasn’t it?” said Telegraph correspondent Tom Cary. “The way this crazy season is going, I really would not be massively shocked if they ditched him mid-season.” The Swiss newspaper Blick said Monaco next weekend could be the 30-year-old’s last chance to up his game. And the candidates are lining up. “Ferrari knows that I’m ready. If they need me or they want me, then they will call me,” Adrian Sutil, who accompanied his manager to last weekend’s Spanish grand prix, said. The Spanish newspaper El Mundo said some paddock pundits believe “the only reason” Massa still has its seat is because the “name Todt” – a reference not only to Massa’s manager Nicolas but to the FIA president – has a “protective arm” around him. Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni told Brazil’s O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper this week: “Felipe has the full confidence of the team, starting with our president. “We have not decided who will be our driver in 2013 but Felipe is not ruled out,” he insisted. Indeed, while some believe Ferrari has hung a sword of Damocles above Massa’s head, others think the Maranello based team have been patient since the Paulista’s recovery from his near-fatal head injuries of 2009. “We have no evidence that makes us think that Felipe has slowed down because of the accident. Zero,” Colajanni said. F1 doctor Gary Hartstein agreed: “An experience like that (Hungary 2009) changes you, but you can’t say that’s why Felipe has not won again.” |

New winner Maldonado looks for Monaco repeat(0) The oddest element of the 2012 season so far is that the unlikeliest of candidates could now be genuine title contenders. Before the Spanish grand prix weekend, Pastor Maldonado was a commonly derided ‘pay driver’ with 500-1 odds of winning in Barcelona, and just a single point to his name in 2011. Now, he is F1′s newest pole-getter and race victor, and genuinely regarded as a potential contender for the world championship. And Dr Helmut Marko, the reigning world champion Red Bull’s motor racing manager, said: “If the Williams really has traction that good, then Maldonado will run rings around everyone in Monte Carlo,” he is quoted by Auto Motor und Sport. Maldonado travelled straight from Spain to Caracus, where he was being quizzed by the local media as to his chances of a back-to-back victory repeat in Monaco next weekend. “I think it’s going to be a great opportunity for us to be strong again,” he said. |

Vettel defends Schumacher after Senna crash(0) Sebastian Vettel has defended his former mentor Michael Schumacher. The seven time world champion has been roundly criticised since last Sunday’s Spanish grand prix, after crashing into Williams’ Bruno Senna at the end of the Barcelona straight. He called the Brazilian driver an “idiot” on the radio and later defended the outburst, but the FIA did not agree, imposing a five-place qualifying penalty for Monte Carlo for causing a collision. “For us, that manoeuvre of Michael’s cost us a lot,” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said on Austrian Servus TV. He said the debris from the crash not only damaged Vettel’s front wing, but led to the reigning world champion having to serve a drive-through penalty due to activating his DRS wing in the yellow-flag zone. German Vettel, however, defended Schumacher. “In those situations we don’t have much time of course,” he said, “and you can get very great speed differences (between the cars) on the straights. “I think it should be classified simply in the category of racing accidents. Unfortunately it happens,” said the reigning world champion. “Of course you can always say what is what afterwards,” added Vettel, “just as you can say that it always takes two to tango.” Mercedes’ Norbert Haug was less eager to comment, although he did tell Germany’s Sport1 that the team “accepts the verdict of the race stewards”. |

Alguersuari says 2013 return ’100 per cent’ sure(0) Jaime Alguersuari has told Spanish publications he is “absolute certain” he will be on the 2013 grid. “This is the best year of my life,” he told Mundo Deportivo, referring to 2012, the year after his young F1 career stalled when he was dropped by backer Red Bull. “I’m only 22,” said Spaniard Alguersuari, who is now Pirelli’s main test driver and a co-commentator for British radio. “I’m in the prime of my life. “It is increasingly clear that what happened with Toro Rosso was not a sporting decision. It was an internal decision and I don’t want to go deeper.” He sounded confident about the future. “It is 100 per cent that I will return in 2013. After being with Pirelli I will have very important knowledge. I knew that this transitionary step was necessary and I’m very happy,” said Alguersuari. “If I had gone (to be test driver) with a team, with all due respect, I’d have no options now. “I am developing a product (Pirelli) that nobody understands but that is vital for formula one — to know the tyres and to understand them. I’m in the right place,” he is quoted by La Vanguardia newspaper. “I chose to be with Pirelli because I knew it would be the most important (element) in formula one. “I know where I am and I know where I’ll be next year,” he insisted. |

Klien: Alonso ‘stands out’ amid 2012 chaos(0) Even amid the chaos of the 2012 pecking order, the star performer is obvious. That is the view of former F1 driver Christian Klien, who confirmed to the Austrian news agency APA that one of his current roles is a simulator driver for the sport’s latest winning team, Williams. “It (2012) is very open,” he said, “but for me Fernando Alonso stands out.” Equal with Sebastian Vettel, Spaniard Alonso is at the top of the drivers’ world championship, a full eight points clear of Lewis Hamilton. The Spaniard’s car has been the struggling Ferrari F2012, but he has never finished a race this season lower than ninth (China). He has therefore scored points at every opportunity, even finishing first and second in Malaysia and Spain respectively. “Alonso has an inferior car,” Klien explained, “but he uses every single little opportunity. “He is the most complete driver who gets the most out of the package he has.” Triple world champion Sir Jackie Stewart agrees that, among arguably the most competitive grid of drivers since the late 80s, Alonso is the standout performer. “Right now we have the best generation of drivers we’ve had for a while,” the famous Scot told the Spanish sports daily AS. “Everyone talks about Vettel, who is a great driver, and also Hamilton of course, but there is also Button, Schumacher, Kimi — all champions. “There are others like Webber who also have the quality to win, young drivers coming up, many of them are very good, but also it is true that Alonso is fantastic.” Asked why the Spaniard has not added a title to his tally since 2006, Stewart said: “The explanation is easy — he hasn’t had the luck to get the best car. “Now he has one that isn’t good, but it’s in those circumstances that you see even more the quality that he has,” said Stewart. Given Alonso’s push to the top of the championship with a sub-standard car, therefore, all the talk about Ferrari writing off the 2012 championship has been silenced for now. “We have to keep developing the car,” Stefano Domenicali, Ferrari’s team boss, said after Barcelona, where significant upgrades were brought to the F2012 package. “We are not yet fast enough to consistently fight for the podium, but that is the only option if we want to be in contention for the title,” he insisted. |

Vettel shrugs at F1′s ‘crazy’ pecking order(0) Five races in, F1′s cleverest brains are still yet to decode the mystery of the bizarre and fascinating 2012 season. As was the case when he utterly dominated last year, Sebastian Vettel is still leading the drivers’ points chase. But, before last weekend, if he had been told that Williams’ Pastor Maldonado would be the winner of the Spanish grand prix, the German admitted: “Well, I would have put a lot of money on them! “I think the odds weren’t bad,” he smiled. Indeed, the major British bookmaker William Hill was taking bets at 500-1 prior to the Barcelona weekend. A spokesman confirmed that only two bets at 10 pounds or above were placed on Maldonado prior to qualifying. “I’m sure Williams don’t understand why they just won the race here,” McLaren’s Jenson Button is quoted by the Guardian newspaper. But the previously-derided ‘pay driver’ Maldonado is not the only potential new winner in 2012, after Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg and Vettel won the opening four grands prix. A detailed look at F1′s specialist reporting in the past few weeks shows that Lewis Hamilton, Mark Webber, Kimi Raikkonen, Romain Grosjean, Michael Schumacher, Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi are all also widely regarded as genuine victory candidates in 2012. And given that their teammates have won grands prix this season, even the struggling Felipe Massa and Bruno Senna should be added to that list. “Dammit, let’s go for (HRT’s) Karthikeyan!” wrote Chris Hockley in the Sun newspaper. “It’s really quite crazy right now,” Vettel, who despite his young age would count himself among F1′s currently perplexed purists, told Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. “What’s happening is difficult for us to explain,” he added. The situation has split the F1 audience, with the purists shaking their heads, and others marvelling at the unprecedented spectacle. “The spectacle has taken over the sport,” said the Paris daily Le Figaro. “Even the teams can’t be sure who will be the hare and who will be the tortoise at any given track,” wrote Hockley. Alonso, who is the joint championship leader, is in the purists’ camp. “Of course it is attractive for the spectators that we are going to Monaco not knowing if we will fight for victory or be left out of the points,” he is quoted by El Pais. “But in a way, after eleven years in formula one and now I’m at Ferrari, I would like to have more stability,” the Spaniard admitted. Sir Jackie Stewart said: “What’s going on is unbelievable, which I think is the outcome of the new rules, new tyres — I think it’s many factors,” he told the Spanish sports daily AS. “What’s happening,” said Maldonado’s race engineer Xevi Pujolar, “is that these tyres are allowing teams who do not have the biggest budgets to be eligible for really good results. “The reason is that the most important thing now is to have a good setup and also some luck with the temperature.” Pirelli, F1′s tyre maker, has received both criticism and praise for its huge role. “Pirelli have been both bold and brave,” Sun journalist Hockley said. “It can’t be easy for a manufacturer to make tyres that sometimes wear out faster than you can say Mercedes.” Marco Tronchetti Provera, the Italian marque’s company chief, is unapologetic. “What we have provided is what the teams have asked for, and it was not easy,” Italian language reports quote him saying. “Our engineers have done an extraordinary thing.” |

Maldonado wins, Alonso and Vettel lead title(0) F1′s astonishing season continues to live up to the hype, as a fifth driver and constructor on Sunday won the fifth grand prix of 2012. Not only is the victory Pastor Maldonado’s first, his walk up the steps at the Circuit de Catalunya was the first taste of the podium in his two-season F1 career. It’s also the first Venezuelan triumph in the sport’s history, and a hugely popular victory for Williams, the once-great British team headed by Sir Frank Williams, whose 70th birthday was warmly celebrated in the paddock on Saturday. “Boy did we need that,” said Williams on BBC television. And asked how he feels on Sky television, he smiled: “Relief.” “Some said Maldonado was a pay driver and he didn’t deserve his place in formula one but they’ll be eating their words now,” commented former team driver David Coulthard. “That was a fantastic drive,” added Coulthard, referring to Williams’ first win since Juan Pablo Montoya in 2004. Williams enthused: “I didn’t see him (Maldonado) make one single mistake.” “You can’t really fault him,” agreed Williams’ 1996 world champion Damon Hill. Amazingly, however, away from the champagne, Sebastian Vettel’s sixth place leaves him at the top of the drivers’ championship, and he is now neck-and-neck with Fernando Alonso, who finished second on Sunday in the improving Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton, who finished dead last on Sunday and finished eighth, is third in the points classification, ahead of Lotus’ Kimi Raikkonen. Finn Raikkonen finished third on Sunday, and is the favourite to become F1′s sixth different winner of 2012 in Monaco in a fortnight. “We showed we still have the speed,” the Lotus driver said after the Spanish grand prix. “If we had a few more laps, we could have fought for a victory.” |

Season of confusion to continue on Sunday(0) F1′s season of confusion looks set to continue, with an uncertain weather forecast only adding to the uncertainty ahead of the Spanish grand prix. The bizarre 2012 contest stepped into yet another gear on Saturday, with events unfolding to put the previously-derided pay driver Pastor Maldonado on pole, alongside the crisis-ridden Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. And the Pirelli tyre predicament, worsened on the challenging Circuit de Catalunya layout and under hot Spanish skies, will continue to confound teams on Sunday, with temperatures set to drop and rain clouds predicted to gather. “I am telling you now, honestly,” said Red Bull’s Mark Webber. “We don’t have even the slightest idea who will benefit when it gets colder.” The German magazine Auto Motor und Sport laid out the fascinating if bewildering situation as of Saturday in Spain: “Sebastian Vettel doesn’t know why his car suddenly lost grip in qualifying. “Jenson Button has no idea why he couldn’t generate any tyre temperature on the 40 degrees track. Williams don’t know why Pastor Maldonado clocked the second fastest lap. “Mercedes’ engineers had to admit they still don’t understand the Pirelli rubber.” Acting team principal Bob Bell smiled tortuously: “If we did understand, we’d be on pole. But even Pirelli don’t know all the answers.” Writing in O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper, Livio Oricchio estimated there are up to 12 candidates for victory. “A grid of madness!” said former F1 driver Patrick Tambay on France’s RMC Sport. “And it’s not over yet.” So, is Michael Schumacher – having sat out Q3 in order to save tyres for the race – now even more critical of Pirelli? “I’ll leave it with what has already been said,” he insisted late on Saturday. |

Harsh penalty for error-prone McLaren(0) The penalty might be harsh, but the loss of Lewis Hamilton’s pole in Spain is just the latest calamitous mistake by McLaren. That was the tone of the paddock’s reaction to the news late on Saturday that a McLaren gaffe saw the FIA send Hamilton from first to last on the Spanish grand prix grid. The Sun newspaper called it a draconian “24-place grid penalty” imposed by the FIA after an “astonishing cock-up” by McLaren. Hamilton was told on the radio to pull over after his pole lap due to a “technical problem”. Sporting director Sam Michael argued ‘force majeure’, but the stewards ruled that it had been entirely McLaren’s fault that not enough fuel was put into Hamilton’s car to ensure a scrutineering fuel sample. Writing in the Telegraph, Tom Cary said the severity of the disqualification “raised eyebrows”, but agreed that “McLaren’s mistake was horrendous”. He said it has been “a season of errors” by the famous British team, who are yet to get Hamilton’s signature on a new contract beyond 2012. “Hamilton must be seething,” read an article in the Daily Mail newspaper, while The Times laid out McLaren’s “catalogue of errors”. 27-year-old Hamilton’s “raw talent is being thwarted by mishap and cock-up,” said journalist Kevin Eason. “McLaren are lovely people but how the hell do they get themselves in this position?” wrote the Mirror’s Byron Young on Twitter. Even the non-English language media agreed. “It was another great mistake by McLaren that could eventually cost Hamilton the championship,” wrote Livio Oricchio in O Estado de S.Paulo. Italy’s La Stampa called McLaren’s fuel gaffe a case of “harakiri”. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport added: “It was error number 13 for McLaren since last year”. While highly critical of McLaren’s own-goal, however, the feeling in the paddock is that the stewards’ penalty – although accepted by McLaren – was overly harsh. “Back of the grid? Way, way too harsh”, said the Mirror’s Young on Twitter. “Draconian penalty in my view,” agreed PA Sport’s Ian Parkes. “Dropping Q3 time would have sufficed.” Sky commentator Martin Brundle added: “(I) feel they should have deleted that (Q3) laptime only which would have put him sixth”. And excluding Hamilton from Q3 altogether would have put him 11th. Now, he will be “lucky to score a point”, Auto Motor und Sport predicted. In the Independent, however, David Tremayne noted: “Welcome to the draconian world of F1.” David Croft, the lead Sky commentator, said the FIA stewards had acted correctly. “A good rule should be one that covers all eventualities with a penalty that acts as a deterrent which in this case is what happened. “Too little fuel can’t be tolerated,” he added. “It seems harsh but had Lewis taken pole by one thousandth of a second, would it be harsh then?” The Spanish fans – not Hamilton’s biggest supporters dating back to his spats with Fernando Alonso in 2007 – were happy. Asked on the El Mundo website whether the penalty was fair, 76 per cent answered yes. |

Spain, Spa, France, Canada and Russia – race rumours(0) Valencia will not be on next year’s F1 calendar, Bernie Ecclestone said on Saturday. He confirmed that, starting in 2013, an annually alternating deal between the Spanish port city and Barcelona will begin. Barcelona, the scene of this weekend’s Spanish grand prix, will host the race in 2013, before Valencia returns to the schedule in 2014, the F1 chief executive told Reuters. Less secure, meanwhile, is France’s touted spot on the 2013 calendar, particularly with the country’s new anti-F1 president Francois Hollande now taking power. Until recently, the F1 chief executive was saying Paul Ricard was set to join the 2013 calendar, annually alternating a race date with Belgium’s Spa Francorchamps. As for the state of the deal now, the 81-year-old admitted: “I have no idea. No idea what they (France) are doing. “It’s a funny arrangement they were making anyway. So I just don’t know.” Ecclestone is also working on a new deal for the popular Canadian grand prix, having told promoter Francois Dumontier that the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve needs to be upgraded. “There are two ways of looking at it,” Dumontier, in the paddock of the Circuit de Catalunya, is quoted by La Presse newspaper. “Either Bernie requires an annual fee windfall, or he will charge a reasonable fee and ask in return for investment in the infrastructure.” He said the contract on the table is for 10 more years, taking Montreal’s existing deal through 2024. Ecclestone said on Saturday that he is sure an agreement will be reached, because Canada is one of F1′s most loved destinations. “I remember saying to Bernie, ‘New York, Austin, I don’t know why you want to go there. Your sure bet is Montreal’. He knows that. “He’s been in Montreal for 34 years. And in the 22 years of the grands prix in the United States, they’ve had eight different cities. “He said ‘You’re right’,” added Dumontier. Another rumour, repeated by The Times’ Kevin Eason on Saturday, is that the planned 2014 Russian grand prix in Sochi “is doomed”. |

Lotus and Sauber set for Barcelona shock(0) Despite not topping a Friday timesheet in Barcelona, one specialist publication sees Lotus as the favourite for Spanish grand prix victory. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport said the ‘long run’ pace of the black and gold E20 was studied carefully after Barcelona practice. “Kimi Raikkonen made a great impression on the critical soft tyres,” the report read. “First, it (the field) is incredibly close. Second, Lotus could win its first grand prix here.” If true, the former Renault team would become the fifth different winning constructor in the opening five races of the extraordinary 2012 season. “Our biggest opponent for Sunday is not Red Bull,” an unnamed McLaren engineer is quoted as saying. “It’s Lotus.” And another surprise pacesetter is Sauber. “Over 15 laps we were better than Red Bull,” team manager Beat Zehnder enthused. “If everything goes right, we can be on the podium,” he is quoted by the Swiss newspaper Blick. Agreed McLaren’s Jenson Button: “The Lotus, Sauber and Williams look very strong.” But in reality, in F1′s new guise of 2012, no one knows what is going to happen on Saturday and Sunday. “Lord knows what will happen here tomorrow,” wrote The Times’ Kevin Eason. “Well, perhaps He is the only one who does know what is going on — F1 hasn’t a clue.” |

Top teams criticise in-season testing(0) Top teams McLaren and Red Bull have questioned whether F1 should have tested last week. Since the sport clamped down hard on private testing for cost reasons some years ago, there remained many in the paddock – notably Ferrari – who argued that at least some in-season testing should still take place. So, for 2012, it was agreed that Mugello would host a three-day session in between the Bahrain and Spanish grands prix. Every team except HRT attended. But there were rumblings that not everyone was happy. McLaren, in fact, did not even send its race drivers Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton to Tuscany. Then, on Friday in Spain, the British team’s regular duo was busily testing in official practice, fielding extravagant sensors and experimental components. “We would have had a very similar programme whether we went to Mugello or not,” said sporting director Sam Michael. “All the teams are geared up to not have testing, to not having test teams and that means we’re equipped and do our planning to do all of that work on Friday. “I think the (Mugello) test itself, personally, I think you could do without it,” Michael continued. “I think it’s a lot of energy and expense during the season that we probably don’t need. “Of course McLaren will gain a lot out of that test but formula one is all relative, so all we really did was spend a load of money.” Red Bull’s technical boss Adrian Newey agreed. “I think we learnt the pasta in Italy is still the best in the world and that’s about it really,” he said when asked about the Mugello test. “I’d agree with what Sam says. To me, yes you go to the test because it’s available. We all spent money but the value of in-season testing has to be questionable.” |
