McLaren wants to halve Hamilton’s salary(0) Money could be at the heart of the delay in Lewis Hamilton’s re-signing with the McLaren team. Until now, the British team has indicated it wants the 2008 world champion to stay on board, while 27-year-old Hamilton insists he has no plans to leave and will turn his attention to the 2013 contract soon. But according to Blick newspaper, McLaren is pushing to cut Hamilton’s existing contract retainer “in half” to “about EUR 10 million”. The Swiss report said the driver is unimpressed with the negotiations so far, but at least Hamilton’s mood has improved tenfold compared with his calamitous 2011. It is a full year since Hamilton raged about his “frickin ridiculous” track rivals in the 2011 Monaco grand prix, when he also half-seriously suggested that the stewards were targeting him “because I’m black”. He is back on top form this season, but still yet to win a race, arguably mainly due to McLaren’s numerous team mistakes. Reports have suggested boss Martin Whitmarsh, who insists Hamilton “deserves” to win this weekend in Monaco, is worried the mistakes might drive the highly rated racer away. On Wednesday, however, Hamilton denied he is frustrated. “I’m not, no. This is the way racing goes sometimes,” he insisted. “I could easily get frustrated because I could have a healthy lead in the championship — but that’s not the case. “I don’t want to speak too early but something has definitely changed. Whatever I’m doing is working,” he told British reporters. “In life, things just seem a lot better and that’s enabling me to get on with my job without having any baggage.” |

D’Ambrosio linked with Massa’s 2012 seat(0) Jerome d’Ambrosio is the latest name linked with struggling Felipe Massa’s Ferrari race seat. While Mark Webber or Sergio Perez are the Maranello team’s more likely longer term solutions, Ferrari may be looking simply for a stop-gap solution, having reportedly run out of patience for Brazilian Massa’s lack of pace and results. The French sports daily L’Equipe named d’Ambrosio, the Belgian driver who lost his Virgin/Marussia seat at the end of last season. He is managed by Eric Boullier, and now Lotus’ reserve driver. Also named as potential substitutes for Massa in recent days were Nico Hulkenberg, Paul di Resta and Kamui Kobayashi. But, according to L’Equipe, d’Ambrosio “has the advantage of being immediately available, giving Ferrari time to find a more permanent solution” for 2013. Also ready to step in now is Adrian Sutil, the former Force India driver who is putting his career back together after the Eric Lux assault affair. “I have no money to offer,” the German is quoted as saying. “After five seasons, people know what is my level. I want a normal salary, that’s all.” |

Ricciardo earning less than $500k in 2012Comments Off Daniel Ricciardo has admitted he will earn less than $500,000 in 2012. “Yeah, it’s quite a strange journey to formula one because it’s so elite and when you get there it can turn around very quickly,” he told Australia’s Fox channel. “(On) the road to getting there, you’re always climbing a ladder, but you don’t really see the rewards until you get well established,” the 22-year-old added. Ricciardo told television host Eddie McGuire that Toro Rosso will pay him some money in 2012. “A little bit,” he smiled. “Let’s say I can buy myself a pair of jeans now, but not a mansion.” He confirmed he is earning “less than” half a million dollars. Some of that has already been spent — on a set of dental braces. “I figured, just to keep my feet on the ground, I won’t get too beautiful,” Ricciardo laughed to the Herald Sun. “So I’ve got a mouth full of beautiful metal instead.” |

De la Rosa urges support for HRTComments Off Ex-Sauber driver Pedro de la Rosa to bring in his fellow countrymen of HRT to continue his racing career in position Sauber has thrown out the 39-year-old now – and lack of alternatives can imagine the current Pirelli test driver means, 2011 to drive for HRT. He was in contact with the family Carabantes, who runs the Spanish cycling team, he says, and adds to the news agency ‘EFE’ to: “If your project is sporty interesting and ambitious, then I will gladly come to them.” Currently, there is but “no hurry”. “For Spain, it is important to a Formula 1 team to have, and their investment is worth something,” de la Rosa says of the Carabantes. “We have a team, but we do not receive the best value within a few months they have brought a car to the starting line and next year they will again have a car, but the project needs more support -. Not only for companies but also by riders like me and the fans. We need to stand behind them! “ |

Lotus to confirm new Trulli contract before KoreaComments Off
Confirmation of Jarno Trulli’s extended stay at Lotus next year is due before the forthcoming Korean grand prix. That is the claim of the Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat, insisting that the Italian’s current teammate Heikki Kovalainen has already penned a new deal for 2011. It was reported from Suzuka that Trulli, 36, was bullish about the future, even though it had been expected that Lotus’ 2011 lineup would have been confirmed by now. Turun Sanomat said Finn Kovalainen – who is currently staying in Kuala Lumpur at team chief executive Riad Asmat’s house – signed his new deal on the Sunday morning of the Italian grand prix last month, but that Trulli’s salary talks were ongoing. The report added that Trulli still hasn’t signed a contract, but that news on the driver front is sure to be announced before Korea. Lotus has been making many announcements recently, including the termination of its Cosworth contract, an altered name for 2011 and the Red Bull technical deal. Confirmation of the Renault engine deal is still pending. Lotus joked about the situation after qualifying was rained off at Suzuka last Saturday, revealing that the team “has nothing to announce for the first time in several weeks”. |

De la Rosa paid three times more by McLarenComments Off
His McLaren job involved a much higher salary, but Pedro de la Rosa is not keen to go back to mere test driving. At 39, the Spaniard returned with Sauber to the formula one grid this year after a long spell helping McLaren develop its cars. The C29, however, has not been a good car, and de la Rosa said after the Canadian grand prix that he is “available” for future employment “even if I have to go back testing or as a reserve driver”. But in interview with El Pais newspaper, de la Rosa insists he is much happier with an actual race seat, even if he is paid “three times less” than he was by McLaren. “I have enough goals … I want to be the oldest champion in history,” he said. “Fangio won at 45, and (at that age) was just as good!” Salary aside, there are other ironies: such as the fact that when he was at McLaren, he learned the layout of the Valencia circuit on the Woking based team’s state-of-the-art simulator. But now that he actually has to race on the streets of the port city this weekend, Sauber does not have a simulator. (GMM) |

Button sued Brawn to receive 2009 F1 car prizeComments Off
Jenson Button had to file legal action before his former team handed over his prize for winning the 2009 world championship. When the 30-year-old agreed to lower his salary amid the Honda/Brawn management takeover, a clause was added to his contract. It read: “In the event that the driver wins the championship at any time during the term, the company shall transfer … ownership of one chassis of the type driven by the driver during that winning season.” The clause has come to light because Button’s company JB Next BV filed legal action in London’s High Court in April against the Brackley based team. According to a report in the Mail on Sunday newspaper, the team – now owned by Mercedes – refused to hand over a 2009 Brawn car to Button. It is believed that six BGP001 cars were made, but an email to Button from Mercedes in January reads: “We have no spare 2009 chassis as limited quantities were manufactured for the 2009 season for cost reasons.” Mercedes reportedly offered to build a replica of the BGP001 car, but Button said it would lack the “special and unique” value of owning one of the very cars he drove to the title. The newspaper said the team has ultimately decided to supply a 2009 Brawn car to the now McLaren driver. “We have arrived at an amicable resolution, and so there will no longer be any court action over this,” Button’s spokesman confirmed. Bigger Lotus salaries led to Force India exodusComments Off Jun.16 (GMM) The promise of more money motivated a swathe of key people to defect to Lotus. That is the claim of Otmar Szafnauer, chief operating officer of the Force India team. Shortly after Force India promoted Mark Smith to replace the Sauber-bound technical director James Key, Lotus announced that Smith will move to the new Malaysian-backed team next year. Force India’s Lewis Butler (chief designer) and Marianne Hinson (head of aerodynamics) are also defecting to Lotus. “Lotus has double the salary,” Szafnauer is quoted by Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. “So you either have to pay more or look for an alternative.” Third in line after Key and Smith for Force India’s top technical job is reportedly Andy Green. |

Red Bull ready to extend Webber’s contractComments Off Red Bull Racing has given the strongest indication yet that it is ready to renew Mark Webber’s contract for 2011. In the wake of his dominance in Spain and Monaco, chiefs of the Austrian-owned team indicated they are keen to keep the 33-year-old Australian alongside Sebastian Vettel next year. But Red Bull’s motor sport advisor Dr Helmut Marko signalled recently that joint championship leader Webber’s back-to-back wins could have an effect on the “salary negotiations”. Ahead of the Turkish grand prix, team principal Christian Horner hinted to Germany’s Bild-Zeitung newspaper that Red Bull is ready to simply extend Webber’s current deal. “If we sat down together on the subject of a contract extension, it would be a pretty short conversation,” said the Briton. |

Red Bull admits ‘desire’ to keep WebberComments Off Red Bull would like to keep Mark Webber on board for the 2011 season. After the Australian driver commandingly won the past two grands prix from pole position and took the lead of the world championship, it is being reported that Red Bull would like to extend his expiring contract. Already under contract for next year is 33-year-old Webber’s younger and highly rated teammate Sebastian Vettel. “It is our desire to continue with Vettel and Webber,” team owner Dietrich Mateschitz’s motor sport adviser Dr Helmut Marko is quoted on Monday by Austria’s APA news agency. Marko indicated that Webber’s run of top form has motivated Red Bull to keep him. “It is important that both drivers are at a high level of performance, with each one pushing the other to excellence. “They must be going to the limit, for themselves but subsequently for the car,” added the Austrian former grand prix driver. Marko acknowledged that the sort of form being shown by Webber could drive up his contract price. “Of course, the management uses it for salary negotiations. But we know what he is worth to us.” (GMM) |

Williams admits losing Webber ‘a mistake’Comments Off Sir Frank Williams admits that letting Mark Webber switch to Red Bull at the end of 2006 was a “mistake”. After two disappointing seasons with the British team in 2005 and 2006, the Australian moved to Red Bull, where in the past week he has won two grands prix from pole position. “You could say we made a mistake,” Williams is quoted by Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung. “Our car was a disappointment, and we thought he was a part of that problem. Therefore, he was not our first choice (for 2007),” added the Grove based team’s eponymous chief. It is now expected that Webber, 33, will sign an extension to his current contract for the 2011 season. Williams co-owner Patrick Head confirmed that he and Sir Frank were reluctant to pay Webber a high salary to stay on board in 2007. “It wasn’t that we thought he wasn’t worth a decent salary, but we’d lost a major sponsor and we were going through some very tough times commercially,” he is quoted by the Guardian. “For the amount Flavio was asking, we didn’t think we could build a car that would justify keeping him on,” added Head. The Briton also thinks Webber, the first Australian world championship leader since Alan Jones in 1981, has improved since leaving the Williams team. Said Head: “He was very quick over a single lap but in our view he had an occasional tendency to make mistakes in the race and suddenly go off. “In his first year with Red Bull he was pretty much the same. But in his second year with them we noticed that those in-race mistakes disappeared.” (GMM) |
