Perez rules out Ferrari switch in 2012(0) Sergio Perez has ruled out switching to Ferrari this season to replace Felipe Massa. It is suggested the famous Italian team is growing increasingly impatient with struggling Brazilian Massa’s poor form. “I think all this hype about a possible switch is massively blown up by the media,” Perez told F1′s official website. “Should that situation really come about I would reject it as I would not want to make a switch in the middle of a season.” Nonetheless, 22-year-old Perez is the obvious favourite, as the cream of Ferrari’s driver development programme and already powered by the Maranello team’s engines at Sauber. “I think that people should not mix up engines and drivers,” he insisted. The denials, however, are unlikely to dampen the rumours, with Massa under increasing pressure to perform — and some saying Monaco could be his last chance. “I hope this weekend is where one can consider that my 2012 championship will begin,” the Brazilian said on Wednesday. “I have had a few difficult times in my career and maybe the start to this season has been the most difficult so far. “I have had to deal with the technical side of the problem, but also it causes a mental side, as it is not easy to deal with this situation. But if you fix one, then it is easier to fix the other,” added Massa in Monaco. Perez tipped him to bounce back. “He (Massa) is a strong driver and he has a great team behind him. Once he’s bounced back all these stories will die at once,” he said. |

Amid Mercedes rumours, di Resta eyes ‘great car’(0) Paul di Resta has hinted he would leap at the chance to replace Michael Schumacher at Mercedes. The German marque’s Brackley based chief executive Nick Fry this week earmarked impressive Force India driver di Resta, earlier a Mercedes protege, as an ideal successor should Schumacher not stay beyond his 2012 contract. Asked about Fry’s comments and the media speculation on Wednesday, di Resta said in Monaco: “It’s always nice to have the press interest and people looking out for you, but I need to stay focused on doing the best job I possibly can.” He told Sky Sports News: “It’s no secret that I want to be a race winner and world champion — and to do that, I need to be in a great car.” |

Brawn ‘back to normal’ after heart checks(0) Ross Brawn revealed on Wednesday he missed the recent Spanish grand prix to have checks on his heart. After handing over to his Mercedes deputy Nick Fry in Barcelona, fellow Briton Brawn is back in action as the team boss in Monte Carlo. Rumours hinted there was more to the story, but Brawn insisted to a German newspaper earlier on Wednesday that he was simply advised by doctors to take the weekend off after a night in hospital for checks. He then told reporters in Monaco his symptoms had been “arrhythmia”, or an irregular heartbeat, insisting he is “back to normal now”. Brawn, 57, joked the heart problem was triggered by watching an exciting football game on television. |

Brawn returns to paddock, praising Schu ‘quality’(0) Ross Brawn should be firing on all cylinders as he returns to the pitwall in Monaco this weekend. Mercedes’ team principal sat out the recent Spanish grand prix due to illness, but a scarcity of extra information triggered speculation. One rumour was that he is seriously ill, whilst another was that his absence may in fact be due to his German employer’s high-stakes spat with Bernie Ecclestone. The latter theory gained traction since Barcelona, with acting team boss Nick Fry taking a much higher than usual profile, including naming Paul di Resta as a possible 2013 successor for Michael Schumacher. Explaining his absence, Brawn told Bild newspaper: “On the Tuesday before Barcelona I felt unwell so I went to the doctor and then stayed a night in hospital for some tests. “When I got home, I decided on the advice of doctors to give myself a weekend off, to be sure that I am fit for Monaco,” the Briton said. Partly because of Brawn’s deputy Fry’s recent comments, and also due to his paltry points tally and his crash with Bruno Senna, rumours about Schumacher’s future have intensified since Spain. “A lot has been said and written,” acknowledged Brawn, “but we should not forget that we – the team – have let him down in three of the fives races, not delivering the job we should have. “We must do better,” Brawn, who worked closely with Schumacher during the seven time world champion’s ultra successful Ferrari era, added. “We saw Michael’s real quality again in the first race, so it’s for that reason that I believe we will see him on the podium this year.” As for a possible contract extension for the 43-year-old, Brawn insisted: “When the time comes, we will sit down together and talk about the future. “I’m sure it will become clear very quickly in what direction we will go.” |

Briatore writing rules for ‘GP1′ series(0) Flavio Briatore could be readying to burst back into formula one. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport said the ousted and formerly banned Italian is busily writing regulations for a ‘GP1′ championship. They could be adopted should the FIA not sign up to the 2013 Concorde Agreement, according to the report. Apparently, the political rumblings in F1 at present are not limited to the sport’s planned floatation, or Bernie Ecclestone’s spat with Mercedes. Cost-control is also a buzzword. As reported recently, the vast majority of F1′s teams want the FIA to enshrine cost-cutting in the actual sporting regulations, even to the point of pushing for a once highly-controversial budget cap. F1 chief executive Ecclestone, however, is not famously close with the FIA’s new president Jean Todt, and according to Auto Motor und Sport he is not convinced that the Paris federation needs to write and control the rules. Enter Briatore. The German report said Ferrari will be a fan of the former Renault chief’s rumoured regulations, as they steer away from the premium on aerodynamics. |

Ferrari say Massa contender for 2013 race seat(0) Ferrari has played down rumours it is close to immediately ousting Felipe Massa, insisting it is possible the struggling Brazilian will still be in a red car next year. On Twitter, the famous Italian team said the latest rumours – including a claim that former Virgin driver Jerome d’Ambrosio is a candidate to replace Massa in 2012 – are “funny”. But it was Ferrari itself who fuelled the speculation, publishing a statement on its website that read like a warning to Massa. “It was a very carefully-worded statement, wasn’t it?” said Telegraph correspondent Tom Cary. “The way this crazy season is going, I really would not be massively shocked if they ditched him mid-season.” The Swiss newspaper Blick said Monaco next weekend could be the 30-year-old’s last chance to up his game. And the candidates are lining up. “Ferrari knows that I’m ready. If they need me or they want me, then they will call me,” Adrian Sutil, who accompanied his manager to last weekend’s Spanish grand prix, said. The Spanish newspaper El Mundo said some paddock pundits believe “the only reason” Massa still has its seat is because the “name Todt” – a reference not only to Massa’s manager Nicolas but to the FIA president – has a “protective arm” around him. Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni told Brazil’s O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper this week: “Felipe has the full confidence of the team, starting with our president. “We have not decided who will be our driver in 2013 but Felipe is not ruled out,” he insisted. Indeed, while some believe Ferrari has hung a sword of Damocles above Massa’s head, others think the Maranello based team have been patient since the Paulista’s recovery from his near-fatal head injuries of 2009. “We have no evidence that makes us think that Felipe has slowed down because of the accident. Zero,” Colajanni said. F1 doctor Gary Hartstein agreed: “An experience like that (Hungary 2009) changes you, but you can’t say that’s why Felipe has not won again.” |

Russia has GP preparations ‘on back burner’(0) Preparations for the inaugural Russian grand prix in 2014 appear to have hit a roadblock. We reported last weekend that rumours were circulating in the Barcelona paddock that the Sochi race now appears “doomed”. The state owned Moscow news agency Ria Novosti now reports that political issues have created “serious delays” in the race’s preparations, according to an adviser with the Russian Automobile Federation. The official, Igor Yermilin, insisted that the project is not doomed, but he said very few efforts have taken place following the bureaucratic reshuffling of the local Krasnodar region. He said some officials of the Omega company, responsible for the F1 circuit project, have lost their jobs. “In the Krasnodar region there has been have been quite serious changes in the leadership,” Yermilin said, “including people from Omega who signed the contract on holding the Russian grand prix”. The coastal city Sochi is also scheduled to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. “The main thing at the moment is the Olympics — the grand prix is on the back burner,” said Yermilin. |

Williams denies cigarette caused Barcelona blaze(0) Two days after winning in Spain, Williams is scrambling to put together the equipment it needs to contest next weekend’s Monaco grand prix. Mere hours after Pastor Maldonado secured the once-great British team’s first victory since 2004, a huge fire broke out in the pits, leaving one team member still in a Barcelona hospital with burns. “His family are in constant communication and he is in good spirits,” Williams said in a media statement. The Oxfordshire based team is now making efforts to ensure it can race in Monte Carlo, having lost a lot of equipment in the fire. Mercifully, however, Bruno Senna’s car appears to have survived, with the Finnish broadcaster MTV3 saying an initial inspection of the chassis showed no devastating damage. Maldonado’s winning car was in parc ferme at the time of the incident. “We had a lot of damage and lost a lot of equipment, including IT equipment,” chief operations engineer Mark Gillan said, according to the Daily Mail. “Over the next couple of days we will be looking at where we are parts-wise. “We will have everything we need to run operationally at Monaco, but we may be missing a few of the extras because obviously we don’t carry a complete set of spares for everything,” he said. It is believed more than one rival team has offered to help Williams by loaning the Sir Frank Williams-led outfit any equipment it needs. A McLaren spokesman confirmed the Woking based team has offered to help. Germany’s Bild newspaper said Williams’ damage bill runs into the millions. Team manager Dickie Stanford denied a rumour the fire was caused by a cigarette in the vicinity of Senna’s fuel tank while it was being emptied. “We don’t know the cause, but we would never allow smoking in the pits,” he insisted. Williams and F1′s governing FIA are investigating. |

F1 personnel injured in huge Williams fire(0) The drama stepped up a notch even after the chequered flag in Barcelona. A couple of hours after Williams’ first win since 2004, something exploded in the British team’s garage, triggering a major fire. Team members and fire crews battled the blaze as paddock regulars scrambled away from the heavy smoke and police arrived on the scene. The Telegraph’s Tom Cary said on Twitter there are “multiple injuries”. It is believed Williams, Force India and Caterham staff – some of whom bravely fought the fire – are being treated in the medical centre, some for smoke inhalation. An emergency helicopter will ferry others to hospital. “Couple of our guys got injuries, burns and maybe one broken wrist, no news on Williams guys I hope they’re ok,” wrote Caterham’s Heikki Kovalainen on Twitter. Rumours indicated the fire could have been caused by a KERS explosion, or possibly fuel, as a burned fuel rig was pulled from the gutted garage. |

Spain, Spa, France, Canada and Russia – race rumours(0) Valencia will not be on next year’s F1 calendar, Bernie Ecclestone said on Saturday. He confirmed that, starting in 2013, an annually alternating deal between the Spanish port city and Barcelona will begin. Barcelona, the scene of this weekend’s Spanish grand prix, will host the race in 2013, before Valencia returns to the schedule in 2014, the F1 chief executive told Reuters. Less secure, meanwhile, is France’s touted spot on the 2013 calendar, particularly with the country’s new anti-F1 president Francois Hollande now taking power. Until recently, the F1 chief executive was saying Paul Ricard was set to join the 2013 calendar, annually alternating a race date with Belgium’s Spa Francorchamps. As for the state of the deal now, the 81-year-old admitted: “I have no idea. No idea what they (France) are doing. “It’s a funny arrangement they were making anyway. So I just don’t know.” Ecclestone is also working on a new deal for the popular Canadian grand prix, having told promoter Francois Dumontier that the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve needs to be upgraded. “There are two ways of looking at it,” Dumontier, in the paddock of the Circuit de Catalunya, is quoted by La Presse newspaper. “Either Bernie requires an annual fee windfall, or he will charge a reasonable fee and ask in return for investment in the infrastructure.” He said the contract on the table is for 10 more years, taking Montreal’s existing deal through 2024. Ecclestone said on Saturday that he is sure an agreement will be reached, because Canada is one of F1′s most loved destinations. “I remember saying to Bernie, ‘New York, Austin, I don’t know why you want to go there. Your sure bet is Montreal’. He knows that. “He’s been in Montreal for 34 years. And in the 22 years of the grands prix in the United States, they’ve had eight different cities. “He said ‘You’re right’,” added Dumontier. Another rumour, repeated by The Times’ Kevin Eason on Saturday, is that the planned 2014 Russian grand prix in Sochi “is doomed”. |

Volkswagen plays down F1 rumours(0) Volkswagen, the German carmaking giant, has played down suggestions it could launch a formula one project some time soon. “There are always rumours about Volkswagen and formula one,” said Jost Capito, who has taken over from Kris Nissen as the head of the Wolfsburg-based company’s motor racing boss. However, he is quoted by Germany’s Sport1 as insisting that VW is only concentrating on its world rally programme. “The WRC programme is approved from 2013 to 2015,” Capito insisted. “There is no room to think about anything else. “It (F1) is not on our radar,” he is also quoted as saying by France’s L’Equipe. “Our hands are full already.” In the wake of BMW, Honda and Toyota’s departures, the only mass production carmakers in F1 are Renault – as an engine supplier – and Mercedes. Ferrari, McLaren, Lotus and Caterham produce niche sports cars. |

Brawn’s Barcelona absence triggers rumours(0) A lack of official information has triggered speculation about Ross Brawn’s health. Bild newspaper said the 57-year-old was given the advice in hospital earlier this week, following a dizzy spell at his home in England. “It’s more than the flu,” chief executive Nick Fry is quoted as saying, “but I can assure you that it’s nothing life threatening.” Indeed, a spokeswoman told us on Thursday that Brawn will be back to work at Monaco in a fortnight. For Spain, Brawn will watch the action on television. “We will still keep in touch,” Michael Schumacher revealed. “Ross cannot be replaced. That’s simply impossible.” |

Di Resta plays down Ferrari rumours(0) Paul di Resta has played down media speculation linking him with a high-profile switch to Ferrari. The reports suggested the famous Italian marque has been impressed with the Scot’s one and a half seasons with Force India and sees him as a potential replacement for the struggling Felipe Massa. “I have not heard anything about it,” the 26-year-old, who is managed by Anthony Hamilton, said in Barcelona. “I am just concentrating on the job I have to do for Force India. That is my only focus,” he is quoted by the Scottish Sun newspaper. However, di Resta is widely regarded as having outshone his highly-rated teammate Nico Hulkenberg so far in 2012. But he denies he is the number one driver. “(There is) equal opportunity and everybody seizing his chances,” di Resta told F1′s official website. China victory was ‘difficult day’ for Schumacher(0) It was a breakthrough for Mercedes and Nico Rosberg, but the Chinese grand prix was a “difficult day” for Michael Schumacher. That is the admission of Shanghai winner Rosberg, whose first race win after more than 100 attempts also delivered German marque Mercedes’ first works victory for more than half a century. “I felt he was very happy for me,” Rosberg told Auto Bild Motorsport, when asked what seven time world champion Schumacher’s reaction was. Since returning to F1 more than two years ago, 43-year-old Schumacher – although stepping up his pace in 2012 – is yet to finish a single grand prix on the podium. Nonetheless, he offered his congratulations “very, very warmly” after China, Rosberg revealed. “At the same time I know that it was, of course, a difficult day (for him),” he admitted. Norbert Haug, the team’s motor sport director, recently sounded inclined to keep Rosberg and Schumacher together beyond 2012, despite the fact the older and more famous German’s contract is ending. He insisted there is “nothing negative” about their relationship. As for ongoing rumours that Schumacher still enjoys number one status, Haug called that idea “absolute nonsense”. “Do you know what Nico said to me, before Michael came? He said ‘If you can get Michael (on the team), then try everything for it’.” Rosberg has not changed his tune. “There was never a situation in which Michael got anything before I did,” he confirmed. |

Now di Resta linked with Massa’s Ferrari seat(0) Paul di Resta has emerged as the latest candidate to possibly succeed struggling Felipe Massa at Ferrari. Britain’s Mirror newspaper said the famous Maranello based team has “made enquiries” about the 26-year-old Scot’s current contract with Force India. The speculation follows Red Bull’s closing down of rumours linking Mark Webber with the switch, as Christian Horner and Dietrich Mateschitz suggested the Australian is set to continue beyond his 2012 contract. Ferrari chiefs “are known to be impressed” with di Resta since he moved as the reigning DTM champion to formula one at the end of 2010, the Mirror’s F1 correspondent Byrton Young wrote. “Paul di Resta would be a very good target for Ferrari because (Fernando) Alonso probably has the best toolkit of knowledge and physically is one the best drivers in the world,” triple world champion Sir Jackie Stewart is quoted by the Daily Mail. “Alonso is almost at his peak and to have a young driver such as di Resta be an understudy to Alonso is something I’d consider if I was at Ferrari,” he added. |
