Static electricity may have caused Williams fire(0) It is believed static electricity could have sparked Williams’ garage fire two weeks ago in Barcelona. Even in the Monte Carlo paddock, the huge Spanish blaze was still a hot topic. The British team and the FIA conducted investigations, but there has been no definite finding about the cause of the fire. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reported suggestions simple static electricity, caused by the specific weather conditions and the fact a container was not grounded at the time, was the culprit. Williams has scrambled to be ready for Monaco, but the only obvious sign of the fire on Wednesday was one missing mechanic, who is still recovering from burns. “He’s on the road to recovery,” said co-owner Toto Wolff. It is believed the mechanic was pumping fuel from one container to another when the fire started. Wolff confirmed the static electricity theory. “This is extremely rare. The weather may have played a role, as we had low pressure over Barcelona that day,” he explained. Auto Motor und Sport said Williams lost mainly computers in the fire, but the crucial data survived. Of the team’s 150 radios, only 40 were intact. Wolff said Bruno Senna’s chassis survived because of the partitions at the back of the main pit area. “They are flame retardant,” he confirmed. “This meant the fire did not come beyond the back (area). The walls melted in the heat, but they didn’t burn.” And financially, the Oxfordshire based team is completely undamaged, due to insurance. |

CVC sells some of F1 stake(0) Even ahead of F1′s Singapore floatation, the sport has some new owners. Reuters, the specialist financial market news agency, said US-based asset managers Waddell and Reed, Blackrock and Norway’s Norges Bank have bought a $1.6 billion stake from existing owners CVC. The report cited a source “with direct knowledge of the matter”. The companies did not immediately comment. It drops CVC’s stake from 63.4 per cent to about 40pc, the source said. We reported on Monday that the Singapore stock exchange approved F1′s plan to raise as much as $3 billion in an initial public offering. Other reports said pre-marketing for the listing, likely to go ahead at the end of June, will begin immediately. “It is not our practice to publicly comment on our dealings with listing aspirants,” said a Singapore bourse spokesman. Some insiders have expressed concern. “Look at the muted first-day response to Facebook’s IPO,” an unnamed banker told the Singapore broadsheet Straits Times. “The F1 listing is not nearly as attractive and long-awaited as that.” |

F1′s sixth winner shapes up for Monaco(0) F1′s next winner could be at the wheel of a black and gold car. “I think Kimi (Raikkonen) will be the sixth different winner in the sixth race,” said Finnish commentator and former driver Mika Salo, to the MTV3 broadcaster. Although the results in 2012 have proved impossible to predict so far, many paddock pundits expected Lotus’ E20 to be the car to beat last weekend in Barcelona. “The big surprise was when Kimi didn’t win,” admitted former Ferrari driver Salo, referring to Pastor Maldonado’s victory for Williams. Also confident about Lotus’ potential is Raikkonen’s teammate, Romain Grosjean, who finished behind the 2007 world champion last weekend. “It’s good to be a little disappointed with third and fourth,” he told the French language RMC Sport. “It shows that as a team we are convinced we can win.” According to the reigning world champion team Red Bull’s drivers, however, there is a downside to this year’s impossible-to-predict F1 landscape. “Maybe we will see an HRT or a Marussia on pole in Monaco,” world champion Sebastian Vettel said, unenthusiastically and half-seriously. Mark Webber insists that what has been described as the Pirelli ‘lottery’ might not be a good thing for the sport. “I don’t know if they (the fans) will get sick of seeing so many different winners,” the Australian told Fox Sports. “It’s nice to have different winners but also we want rivals.” |

Russia has GP preparations ‘on back burner’(0) Preparations for the inaugural Russian grand prix in 2014 appear to have hit a roadblock. We reported last weekend that rumours were circulating in the Barcelona paddock that the Sochi race now appears “doomed”. The state owned Moscow news agency Ria Novosti now reports that political issues have created “serious delays” in the race’s preparations, according to an adviser with the Russian Automobile Federation. The official, Igor Yermilin, insisted that the project is not doomed, but he said very few efforts have taken place following the bureaucratic reshuffling of the local Krasnodar region. He said some officials of the Omega company, responsible for the F1 circuit project, have lost their jobs. “In the Krasnodar region there has been have been quite serious changes in the leadership,” Yermilin said, “including people from Omega who signed the contract on holding the Russian grand prix”. The coastal city Sochi is also scheduled to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. “The main thing at the moment is the Olympics — the grand prix is on the back burner,” said Yermilin. |

Williams denies cigarette caused Barcelona blaze(0) Two days after winning in Spain, Williams is scrambling to put together the equipment it needs to contest next weekend’s Monaco grand prix. Mere hours after Pastor Maldonado secured the once-great British team’s first victory since 2004, a huge fire broke out in the pits, leaving one team member still in a Barcelona hospital with burns. “His family are in constant communication and he is in good spirits,” Williams said in a media statement. The Oxfordshire based team is now making efforts to ensure it can race in Monte Carlo, having lost a lot of equipment in the fire. Mercifully, however, Bruno Senna’s car appears to have survived, with the Finnish broadcaster MTV3 saying an initial inspection of the chassis showed no devastating damage. Maldonado’s winning car was in parc ferme at the time of the incident. “We had a lot of damage and lost a lot of equipment, including IT equipment,” chief operations engineer Mark Gillan said, according to the Daily Mail. “Over the next couple of days we will be looking at where we are parts-wise. “We will have everything we need to run operationally at Monaco, but we may be missing a few of the extras because obviously we don’t carry a complete set of spares for everything,” he said. It is believed more than one rival team has offered to help Williams by loaning the Sir Frank Williams-led outfit any equipment it needs. A McLaren spokesman confirmed the Woking based team has offered to help. Germany’s Bild newspaper said Williams’ damage bill runs into the millions. Team manager Dickie Stanford denied a rumour the fire was caused by a cigarette in the vicinity of Senna’s fuel tank while it was being emptied. “We don’t know the cause, but we would never allow smoking in the pits,” he insisted. Salo believes Bottas to replace Senna soonComments Off Former F1 driver Mika Salo believes his Finnish countryman Valtteri Bottas is being groomed by Williams for a race seat — in 2012. When the Toto Wolff-managed Bottas, 22, was announced as the British team’s 2012 reserve, Sir Frank Williams said he would practice on 15 Friday mornings and then “most likely” be replaced with a “more experienced driver” for the rest of those race weekends. That more experienced driver would ultimately turn out to be Bruno Senna. So with Brazilian Senna struggling so far in 2012, Salo has revealed he senses things could be about to change. “Bottas is incredibly respected by the team,” Salo, now a commentator for the Finnish broadcaster MTV3, said. “When I spoke with Frank Williams, he praised Valtteri to the skies, and said that he belongs in the races. “I asked him when and he said it wouldn’t be long. “Yes, I read between the lines that he means this season,” added Salo. One major spanner in the works, however, is that Senna brings crucial sponsorship to Williams. “It is a difficult situation for Williams, where both drivers bring money,” Salo acknowledged. “But the good thing is that Frank Williams is not a businessman first, he is an old racing driver. He thinks about nothing else but how to make his team successful. “Although Senna is a nice guy, he is not able to drive at the level that he needs to be at.” When asked about Salo’s theory, Bottas commented: “I have no information.” |

Raikkonen not ruling out Spain victory(0) Kimi Raikkonen is not ruling out victory in Barcelona this weekend. If he does succeed on Sunday, the Finn will become the fifth different driver, driving for a fifth different team, to win the fifth grand prix of 2012 — an almost unthinkable scenario for formula one. Not only that, some believe that – despite McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull having fielded the winning cars so far in 2012 – Lotus is actually the favourite in Barcelona. Raikkonen and his teammate Romain Grosjean were both on the podium in Bahrain, and the black and gold E20 set the pace last week at the Mugello test. “You would say now that the Lotus and the Red Bull are the cars to beat,” said Melbourne winner Jenson Button on Thursday. Raikkonen, openly disappointed about his second place recently, hopes so. “If everything goes smoothly then we can be up there,” he told reporters on Thursday. He agrees that the car was a true pacesetter in Bahrain and Mugello. “Let’s hope it works just as well if not better here,” Raikkonen, 32, told the Finnish broadcaster MTV3 at the Circuit de Catalunya. “Then we will at least have the possibility of victory,” he added. He does not, however, want to talk about the championship. “It has happened before that I had the best car overall but was still not the champion,” said Raikkonen. “There are so many little things that have to go in the right direction for you (to win the title). “It’s pointless to think about the championship. Let’s try to do our job well, and see if that’s enough,” the self-described ‘iceman’ added. |

Barrichello reveals Ferrari ‘threat’ of 2002(0) Rubens Barrichello has alleged that Ferrari made a threat that might have ended his motor racing career during the infamous 2002 Austrian grand prix. Ten years ago, the Brazilian led the race at the A1-Ring but eventually, at the very last corner, succumbed to team orders that allowed number one teammate Michael Schumacher to pass him. Subsequent video footage has depicted then Ferrari team boss Jean Todt asking Barrichello on the radio to simply “let Michael pass for the championship, please”. But Barrichello, having left F1 at the end of 2011 for a seat in Indycar, says it was not quite as simple as that. “It was eight laps of war,” he is quoted by Brazil’s Globo. “It’s very rare that I lose my temper, but I was screaming on the radio. I kept going right to the end, saying I would not let him pass. “That’s when they said something about something much broader. It was not about the contract. “I cannot tell you what they said, but it was a form of threat that made me think about re-thinking my life, because the great joy for me was driving,” said the 39-year-old. |

Cristalbox, new sponsor of HRT Formula 1 Team(0) The Spanish windscreen repair and replacement company and HRT Formula 1 Team have signed a collaboration deal for Cristalbox to become a new sponsor of the Spanish outfit for 2012. Cristalbox, who have already been linked with the motorsport world for a few years, have decided to extend this link and have taken a step into Formula 1 alongside HRT Formula 1 Team, with the objective of supporting the Spanish team’s project in the pinnacle of world motorsport. The deal with which Cristalbox joins the team as a sponsor has a one year duration and the glass repair company has bolstered its commitment to HRT’s project by completing a spectacular glazing job at the new Caja Mágica headquarters in Madrid. The creation of a curtain wall at the team’s workshop supposed the installation of more than 25,000 kilogrammes of specially fabricated glass and will enable the team to make the most of the sunlight and environmental conditions. Just like the conditioning of the other project areas at the Caja Mágica facilities, the installation and reinforcement of the curtain wall has been completed in under a month, thus proving the capacity of the Spanish company to expand its services. Webber denies signing 2013 Ferrari deal(0) Mark Webber has denied signing with the Ferrari team for 2013. Spanish media reports, indicating that a letter of intent may already have been written, said Fernando Alonso favours Australian Webber to replace the struggling Felipe Massa. The reports also said Webber, 35 and with an expiring Red Bull contract, could be signed for a single season ahead of Sergio Perez joining in 2014. “Sergio was flavour of the month last week for the Ferrari drive; now it’s me,” Webber said at the Mugello test on Tuesday. “I’m focusing 100 per cent on this season and doing the best job for myself and Red Bull Racing. I’m not putting any energy into anything else.” Italian-language reporters also quote Webber as saying: “There’s a whole season ahead of us before we need to think about the future. “One day the talk is about Jenson (Button joining Ferrari), then it’s Sergio, now it’s me. I haven’t signed anything.” “My focus is on this team (Red Bull); we’ve had a good start to the season, we’re only four races down and the road is very, very, very long before we start talking about the future.” As for the closely-contested 2012 championship, Webber added: “The grid is very close together. “Sebastian (Vettel) had a weekend without problems in Bahrain and won but he didn’t dominate, and that’s the same for everyone. “No one will be dominant in the first half of the season, so to be third at the start of the European season is not bad,” he said. |

Grosjean admits he ‘didn’t race’ Raikkonen(0) Romain Grosjean has admitted he didn’t try to keep his teammate Kimi Raikkonen behind him at the recent Bahrain grand prix. In the wake of Lotus’ podium breakthrough, it was suggested Frenchman Grosjean was the victim of team orders. Team figures, including boss Eric Boullier and 2007 world champion Raikkonen who finished the race second ahead of rookie Grosjean, denied the charge, even though team orders are fully legal. But it emerged this week that, just before Grosjean was passed by Raikkonen, the French driver was told on the radio: “Kimi is faster than you. “Do not hold him up,” the radio message, broadcasted for the first time by F1′s official website this week, ended. Onboard footage of the move also showed Raikkonen briefly waving to his teammate as he completed the easy pass, ostensibly to thank him. “I think that if I had closed the door on Kimi, or if we had fought, then I could have lost a wing,” Grosjean said this week. “We knew that we could have a podium as a result and I didn’t want to make a mistake. I didn’t race at my best level,” he admitted to RMC. |

Schumacher: F1 2012 ‘a 1000 piece puzzle’(0) F1′s new face of 2012 is polarising the sport. It seems teams, drivers and spectators alike either love or hate the new great influence brought largely by Pirelli’s new generation of tyres. An admitted critic is Michael Schumacher. “It’s a 1000 piece puzzle that you need to put together at each race,” said the seven time world champion, according to Auto Motor und Sport. Not for three decades have four different drivers driving for four different teams won the opening four grands prix of a season. “From the standpoint of competition,” wrote Livio Oricchio in O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper, “there is no doubt that the Pirelli 2012 generation meets fully the objective of promoting the show. “But if you think purely about the engineering challenge that is formula one, and the genius of the people and the immense financial and technical resources needed for success, the tyres have now taken on such an importance that the results don’t seem compatible. “Myself, and many in formula one, hope the new versions of tyres that Pirelli is developing returns a little more predictability in terms of how they behave, without affecting the show too much.” For now, however, the teams need to put their puzzles together, and that will undoubtedly be the focus of this week’s three-day in-season test at Mugello. “He who understands the tyres first,” McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh astutely noted, “will have a huge advantage in the world championship.” A broad understanding is already developing, including why 2012 winners Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel won from the very front of the field. “When you’re in a battle, you can’t take the lines that are best for the tyres,” said Mercedes’ Ross Brawn. All eyes are now turning to Mugello, where the understanding will continue. “These test days could change the balance of power in formula one,” Norbert Haug predicted dramatically in Bild newspaper. Not everyone is enthusiastic, however, including McLaren who oppose the Mugello test on cost grounds. Williams’ chief engineer Mark Gillan agrees: “The days of test teams are gone, so this is not logistically easy,” he is quoted by Germany’s Sport1. Bruno Senna added: “Mugello is not an ideal test track, as it’s very different to most of the tracks that are on the calendar.” |

The Finnish broadcaster MTV3 reports that the Frenchman was told that his teammate “Kimi (Raikkonen) is faster than you”. “Do not hold him up,” the radio message reportedly ended. In 2010, when team orders were still illegal, Felipe Massa was famously told “Fernando (Alonso) is faster than you” shortly before the Brazilian gave up the lead of the race to Alonso. Ferrari was fined $100,000. Today, team orders are allowed, but Lotus denied it instructed Grosjean to let 2007 world champion Raikkonen pass before the Finn finished second in Bahrain. “We don’t want to play team orders,” Lotus team principal Eric Boullier insisted in Bahrain, “so we let them race normally and what happened, happened.” |

Webber helps fans get live coverage in Aus(0) Australian F1 fans are this week rejoicing in local hero Mark Webber even more than usual. Pressure applied by the Red Bull driver was reportedly instrumental in returning the sport to the live television airways in Australian capital cities. Fans were outraged with Australian broadcaster Ten’s decision to take formula one from its high definition channel One, which in turn meant viewers in Perth and Adelaide had no live coverage at all. Angry fans bombarded Ten’s Facebook and Twitter pages with criticism abuse, and urged Webber to help their cause. Webber obliged. “Come on (Ten), I hear our great Australian motor sport fans are not happy with rescheduling of timings of the GPs,” he wrote on Twitter. “Let’s go live.” Within an hour, Ten reinstated Perth and Adelaide’s live broadcasts — and in full HD. “The next time Ten wants to tangle with its motor sport audience, perhaps they should ask Mark Webber first,” read a report at The Australian newspaper. |

F1 assesses fallout after damaging Bahrain sagaComments Off With the F1 world now returned from Bahrain, the sport is assessing the fallout of one of the most controversial grands prix in history. The drivers were conspicuously quiet over the saga in the island Kingdom, but – with no contract tying him down – former Force India driver Adrian Sutil admitted he was glad he was not there. “In a situation like that, it is probably better not to go,” the German said on Sky Deutschland. “On the one hand, the decision was made (to go to Bahrain), on the other hand, it’s very difficult when there are so many problems in a country.” Red Bull reserve driver Sebastien Buemi, who has family living in Bahrain, does not agree at all. “I arrived on Monday and I had no problem — maybe there were a few more police than two years ago, but nothing happened to me,” the Swiss insisted on Austrian Servus TV. Force India and Sauber, however, witnessed Molotov cocktail attacks on their treks to and from the circuit. And Caterham team spokesman Tom Webb told the Sun that there was “one minor incident when one of our (hire) vans slowed down in traffic and its occupants saw a local youth on the side of the main road brandishing a bottle with a rag stuffed in its neck”. World champion and race winner Sebastian Vettel also admitted the feeling was tense in the paddock throughout the weekend. “It was not easy for anyone,” the Red Bull driver admitted, according to SID news agency, “but I’m glad that nothing happened to any of us (in F1).” And the Telegraph quotes Vettel adding: “Hopefully, we come back in the future when everything’s a little bit safer.” Reuters reports that Vodafone, the main sponsor of the half Bahrain-owned McLaren team, sent no staff to the country and expressed concerns to the British outfit. But Jim Wright, an F1 sponsorship expert, told the Guardian that he thinks while the sport’s image took a beating last weekend, sponsors will be happy. “Most teams handled a difficult decision very well,” he said. “On that basis I think a lot of people would be pleased with that and happy to get involved with them.” The television audience was also unaffected – even boosted – with the BBC reporting more viewers for Bahrain than Australia and Malaysia, and Germany revealing similarly strong figures. Still, there remains criticism. “Now is an opportunity to reflect,” former F1 driver Alex Zanardi told Tuttosport, “and make sure that major sporting events are assigned only to governments that deserve the honour of hosting them. “Ecclestone is brilliant and has made formula one what it is, but he can’t administer races at any cost and above all else,” insisted the Italian. Due to security fears, Force India sat out a practice session on Friday so that staff could return to their hotels in daylight. F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone was reportedly enraged, and according to rumours got his revenge by instructing Formula One Management’s television cameras to ignore the Silverstone based team’s cars in qualifying. “There was a bit of fuss about what we did,” deputy team principal Bob Fernley is quoted by Spain’s AS newspaper, “and it was not easy, but I think it turned out to be the right response. “We had a lot of pressure, our attitude was not well received,” he confirmed, “but I think that we had a duty of care to our employees, and to do the right thing by the team.” |
