Force India, Ecclestone, deny Bahrain GP boycottComments Off Force India deputy boss Bob Fernley has dismissed reports the Silverstone based team could pull out of the controversial Bahrain grand prix. Two members of the team were allowed to return to Europe this week following a Molotov cocktail attack en route from the Sakhir circuit to the hotel. There were high-level meetings involving Force India on Thursday, sparking speculation the entire team could follow its frightened members back to the UK. But Fernley, admitting that security has been ramped up after the incident, is quoted by Express newspaper: “We are definitely taking part, that is decided.” Bahrain’s information affairs authority also released a statement featuring quotes by Bernie Ecclestone. “I have no knowledge of any teams planning to withdraw from the race and we are all looking forward to racing in Bahrain,” the F1 chief executive said. According to Telegraph correspondent Tom Cary, however, another incident like the one involving Force India this week could force F1 to change its decision to go ahead with the race. “If that happened again and someone was injured then that’s the nightmare scenario for organisers as it might push the teams over the edge,” he said. Many drivers, like Kimi Raikkonen, have said the situation is normal this weekend in Bahrain, but Cary does not agree. “Normally there would be PR events in town, you know, ‘meet the fans’ and that sort of thing but certainly as far as I’m aware there aren’t any of those happening,” he said. World champion Sebastian Vettel said he will be happy when track action begins on Friday. “I think it’s not a big problem,” the German said when asked about the security situation this weekend, “and I’m happy once we start testing tomorrow because then we worry about the stuff that really matters — tyre temperatures, cars.” Earlier, Vitaly Petrov’s manager indicated the Russian would only travel to Bahrain if F1 could guarantee his safety. “If it was dangerous they wouldn’t let us in,” the Caterham driver told The National in Bahrain. “If they make sure nothing gets thrown onto that track to hurt us, then we’ll be fine. We are here; if it happens, it happens,” added Petrov. In fact, almost everyone in Bahrain has been reluctant to comment in detail, but there is an obvious feeling of unease. Peter Sauber told Blick newspaper: “I feel like a guest, and so it is not polite to criticise your host.” But 1996 world champion Damon Hill allowed himself some criticism of F1, including the sport’s most powerful figures, Bernie Ecclestone and Jean Todt. He pointed out that FIA president Todt has said “next to nothing” about the Bahrain saga. “This I find baffling,” Hill wrote in the Guardian. “Surely it is possible to condemn acts of inhumanity without taking a side?” As for F1 chief executive Ecclestone, who has consistently trivialised the Bahrain issue, Hill noted that “few” in the paddock “dare to publicly disagree” with the imperious 81-year-old. “Perhaps we should (criticise him), instead of just muttering under our breath, scared of losing our passes,” said Hill. Hermann Tilke, the German architect who designed the Sakhir circuit, sees the entire saga as a storm in a teacup. “It is safe in Bahrain,” Tilke, whose company has an office there, told the Kolner Express newspaper. “I’ve never heard about any problems from our people. “Of course there is some unrest, but it is protests, not civil war. As Bernie Ecclestone has said, we do sports, not politics,” he insisted. “And if they demonstrate peacefully now, the media will report on it, so both sides benefit.” |

F1′s Bahrain crisis deepensComments Off With F1 currently scheduled to arrive en masse in Bahrain next week, a crisis surrounding the possible cancellation of the island Kingdom’s race is continuing to deepen. The teams have now denied Bernie Ecclestone’s claim that they can simply choose to skip the event. “That would not be possible,” said a statement issued by the teams association FOTA. “Teams are unable to cancel (a) grand prix.” Bahrain, meanwhile, stepped up its campaign, accusing some of deploying “scare-mongering tactics” designed to force the race’s cancellation. The race organisers released a report conducted by Lotus, following the Enstone based team’s recent reconnaissance mission to Bahrain. “We came away from Bahrain feeling a lot more confident that everything is in hand,” Lotus is quoted as having reported. The team, however, reacted angrily, accusing the organisers of having released a “confidential” document. “Lotus F1 Team is one of 12 contestants of the … world championship and we would never try to substitute ourselves for the FIA”, said the Enstone based team. Surmised Times correspondent Kevin Eason on Twitter: “(It’s) getting messy…” At the same time, F1 chief executive Ecclestone became fully immersed in the political situation on Tuesday, reporteding personally phoning Bahrain’s crown prince to express concern about the jailed hunger striker. An Amnesty International report published this week had called for Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja’s release, amid claims he is now close to death and being force-fed. But the Bahrain government, through its information affairs authority, insisted that only police and rioters are being injured in “infrequent and remote clashes”. Also weighing into the argument was Sir Jackie Stewart, the eloquent triple world champion, who said: “I would go. “The commercial rights holder has sold a package, at a price, and it is part of the constructors’ agreement that they attend the races that have been published,” he told the Guardian. “As a team owner I would have to honour my agreement both orally and legally.” Whatever happens, the Bahrain saga – stretching back now over a year – is not good news for the future of the island Kingdom’s calendar spot. “Maybe we wouldn’t renew it (the contract),” Ecclestone admitted to the BBC. “We’ll have to look and see.” |

FIA still believes Mercedes F-duct legalComments Off The FIA appears to have waded back into the ‘F-duct’ debate, indicating that the Mercedes-style solution is fully legal. We reported on Monday that the saga looked set to continue into China next weekend, with some teams – notably Red Bull and Lotus – questioning the legality of the aerodynamic innovation. It had emerged that Lotus technical director James Allison has come up with another argument against the technology that will be posed to the FIA’s Charlie Whiting ahead of scrutineering in Shanghai next week. Christian Horner insists Red Bull and Lotus’ concerns are shared by others. “Believe me it’s not just Red Bull, I think there’s half the paddock that’s been looking at this,” he told British television Sky Sport’s The F1 Show. The Red Bull team boss revealed that Whiting left Malaysia wanting “to have a think about it”. So, the latest development is the re-release via the FIA website of an “edited version” of the technical briefing that Whiting gave to reporters in Australia last month. It is believed the complaining teams’ main objection to the Mercedes system is that it arguably uses ‘driver movement’ – the pressing of the DRS button – to be activated. Under the heading “Pressing the DRS button and the issue of ‘driver movement’”, the media briefing quotes Whiting as stating simply: “This is specifically allowed (in the rules).” Mercedes’ Ross Brawn is quoted by the BBC: “We call it the DRS, because that’s all it is. The purpose of the DRS is to improve overtaking and that’s what we’re trying to do.” Whiting’s stance in China, however, may not be the end of it. “Then the teams are faced with alternatives,” Horner explained. “Either accept it and get on it and maybe look at your own solution if that fits your car. “You’ve got the opportunity to protest if we were to feel – or any other team were to feel – that we didn’t agree with Charlie’s interpretation,” he added. |

Senna hopes strong result silences criticsComments Off Bruno Senna has admitted he feels a release of pressure following a strong showing in Malaysia last weekend. The Brazilian, whose uncle was the great triple world champion Ayrton Senna, has had a tough time establishing his credentials to date with part-time seats at the HRT and Renault (now Lotus) teams. Although out-qualified for the second consecutive grand prix by his Williams teammate Pastor Maldonado in Malaysia, Senna went on to score 8 points in the race — more than the famous British team’s entire tally of last year. “Having a good result takes some of the weight off your shoulders,” he admitted, according to the Sun newspaper. “There will always be critics and you are never going to please everybody. But for sure, having a strong result will take some wind out of the critics’ sails. “Hopefully I can make sure I keep having strong results to show I deserve my place here,” the 28-year-old added. Martin Brundle, the former grand prix veteran who is now a highly respected British commentator and analyst, has revealed he is one such sceptic who has been won over. “For the first time, I believe Bruno Senna can cut it in formula one,” he said. “I hadn’t seen anything before that convinced me in the same way this (result in Malaysia) did.” |

Ferrari ‘Concorde’ with $50m bonusComments Off Ferrari’s new deal for the 2013 Concorde Agreement reportedly involves a $50 million annual fee. It is believed the Italian team has now finalised its commercial agreement with Bernie Ecclestone. The same is reportedly true for fellow top teams McLaren and Red Bull, whose annual additional fee is, according to German newsmagazine Der Spiegel, $35m apiece. Ecclestone wanted to announce the conclusion of successful Concorde Agreement negotiations in Malaysia, but major teams including Mercedes and Williams were yet to sign up. Instead, the F1 chief executive released a statement saying deals have been done with ‘the majority’ of the teams. Mercedes, in particular, is more than unhappy. “It can not be,” a Daimler insider is quoted as saying, “that transparency from our business partners is lacking regarding a contract through 2020.” |

Raikkonen would have stayed in F1 in 2010Comments Off Kimi Raikkonen has argued he is back in the mood for F1 by revealing he would have kept racing in 2010. Indeed, at the end of 2009, Ferrari bought out the Finn’s deal so that Fernando Alonso could arrive early with the backing of the Spanish bank Santander. Raikkonen headed off for two years of world rallying but is back with Lotus in 2012, fending off all the old questions about his motivation. “Since I started in F1, I have always preferred the time we spend in the car from anything else happening in the paddock. It’s still the same,” the 32-year-old insists. Even now, he would prefer to split his F1 racing with more rallying, but has agreed to abide his team’s wishes that he stay off the gravel. “Ah, it’s normal with formula one they try to ban everything,” he told London’s Telegraph. “Unfortunately with what happened to Robert (Kubica) last year … but even before that it was written into contracts. “Maybe in the future if you can do some good results you can get a release or something. I still love it,” said Raikkonen. “If I could do it this year at the same time as formula one I would. I think it’s good practice and it’s good fun.” |

No ‘step’ on new Marussia car’s noseComments Off Marussia’s new car for 2012 does not feature a ‘step’ on its front nose. The one exception, until now, was McLaren. But Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reports that the 2012 Marussia, which will be seen for the first time in Barcelona next week, also has a clean aerodynamic line at the front. The former Virgin team works closely with McLaren, including using the famous British team’s test rigs and wind tunnel. “In fact, there was little difference in theory between the two solutions. So why take risks with something that we do not know?” a Marussia team source is quoted as saying. Timo Glock has already driven the new step-less Marussia in the McLaren simulator. “We don’t have too much experience with the simulator so we hope that it’s right, but we will not be too optimistic — that’s not to say that I’m disappointed,” said the German driver. “I think we have a good base to build upon,” added Glock. “We have been focusing for a long time on finding the errors with the previous car and getting over them,” he is quoted by Speed Week magazine. |

Kovalainen inks 2011 deal but not confirming yetComments Off Heikki Kovalainen has admitted at Monza that he knows the identity of his F1 team for 2011, but cannot yet divulge the name. The Finn is almost certainly staying at Lotus, but he has also been speculatively linked with a return to his first formula one employer, Renault. “Yes, I know what team I will be with next season, but you’ll have to wait a few days before I can say,” the former McLaren driver is quoted by Turun Sanomat newspaper. The report said Kovalainen, 28, has been “fully committed” to Lotus’ “long-term project” this year, and apparently even contributed to the identification of staff for recruitment. Lotus reportedly intends to switch to Renault power for the 2011 season, if it can negotiate a release from its Cosworth contract. |

Korea’s final FIA inspection nearly six weeks overdueComments Off
Instead, the venue has been given until September 21 to prepare for Charlie Whiting’s final inspection, with a FIA spokesman admitting “a lot of work remains to be completed” at the Yeongam site, according to the Telegraph. Appendix O of the Code says the final inspection for a permanent venue should take place “not later than 90 days before the first international event to be held” there. If adhered to, Korea’s final inspection should have taken place at the end of July, given its late October race date. And if a circuit fails its final inspection, the sporting regulations state that the event “will not be considered for inclusion in the following year’s championship unless the FIA judges the cancellation to have been due to force majeure”. Countering ongoing speculation about the state of the site, race organisers have released some photos showing completed buildings and an apparently freshly-laid track surface. But other, unofficial photos recently did the rounds showing that aspects of the venue are far from complete. However, the Telegraph’s Tom Cary said the FIA is “satisfied” with progress. Indian driver Karun Chandhok is currently on his way to the east Asian state, where on Saturday he is scheduled to drive Red Bull’s demo car around the circuit. Event organisers KAVO insist the venue is “90 per cent” complete. |

Funny side lost as di Grassi alters Glock quoteComments Off Lucas di Grassi has survived an uncomfortable gaffe within the Virgin team. After the Hockenheim race, the team’s press officer Tracy Novak reportedly presented both the Brazilian rookie and his teammate Timo Glock with proposed official quotes for the media release. The normal practice in the team is for the drivers to make proposed changes in writing, before reporters receive the release by email. Motorsport-total.com reveals that although it was probably a prank, di Grassi, 25, amended German Glock’s official comment. The quote received by the media read: “It was a difficult start to the race as Lucas overtook me in a brilliant move”. Glock said: “When I read it I was very surprised — I can guarantee I didn’t say it.” The German report indicates that Virgin did not see the funny side either, particularly after di Grassi retired from the race due to hitting a kerb too hard. |

Renault ‘fine’ after cash flow ‘crisis’ – EcclestoneComments Off Renault’s health is “fine” despite Bernie Ecclestone confirming the Enstone based team requested the early payment of its 2010 commercial revenues. “All that was was the fact that one of the (Renault) shareholders didn’t want to take money from another one of his companies because that would have meant convening a board meeting,” Ecclestone said in an interview with the Telegraph. “But I never gave them the money. And they got over the crisis so everything is fine,” added the 79-year-old Briton. |
