Finance police raid Monza(0) There is trouble afoot at Monza, the scene of the famous and historic Italian grand prix. On Tuesday morning, Italy’s finance police the Guardia di Finanza entered the Autodromo Nazionale to investigate seven people involved with the operation of the circuit. According to Il Giorno and La Repubblica, the Monza prosecutor suspects tax offenses, false invoicing and other discrepancies in relation to Sias SpA, the circuit operator, between 2007 and 2012. Among the suspected offenses is the issuing of invoices for non-existent transactions in order to show a positive balance sheet for the running of some events. The officers raided the Sias offices and also the home of the circuit director, Enrico Ferrari, and other high ranking officials. |

Press tips ‘small advantage’ for Red BullComments Off Most leading specialist publications see Red Bull as the continuing pacesetter in formula one. “They still have an advantage, but it’s smaller,” agreed Jenson Button, according to Brazil’s O Estado de S.Paulo. His boss Martin Whitmarsh added: “Red Bull has a solid, fast car, better than us in slow corners, but we’re better in the fast ones.” Switzerland’s Sonntagsblick, however, sees McLaren actually ahead of the energy drink-owned team, with Mercedes in third place and Force India a surprise fourth. “Red Bull is faster (than Mercedes),” said the German marque’s boss Ross Brawn, “and clearly a little more than we had hoped for,” he told Auto Motor und Sport. The international publications said Lotus, amid their chassis flaw problems, rank anywhere between third (Auto Motor und Sport) and eighth (Blick). According to the same press, Ferrari is in trouble, ranking no higher than fifth in the lists of the aforementioned publications — and the authoritative Auto Motor und Sport predicting nothing short of a disastrous season for the fabled Italian team. Felipe Massa is quoted by Spanish reporters as saying Barcelona was “a little more positive” than the Jerez test recently, and he was asked to rank the development of the new F2012 car out of ten. “Probably more than five. There is still much to do, but now we are closer than we were,” said the Brazilian. As for whether the car is a race winner, Massa added: “I hope so, but it’s very difficult to say anything in testing,” he is quoted by Finland’s Turun Sanomat. Indeed, Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi ended last week’s Barcelona test with the quickest time, but Blick’s veteran correspondent Roger Benoit warned against taking that too seriously. “When with the same tyres at the same time, (Mercedes’ Nico) Rosberg was a second faster per lap than Sauber’s Japanese,” he said. “In testing, the truth is seldom revealed — if the teams used lie detectors, they would all be laying exploded around us.” According to Britain’s Sun newspaper, Kobayashi confirmed: “I don’t think McLaren and Red Bull are slow. “We don’t really wish for wins or podiums. For us this is a bit too far away.” Instead, the midfield battle looks extremely tight, with Brazilian correspondent Livio Oricchio surmising that Sauber as well as Force India, Toro Rosso and Williams are all in there. “It will be race to race,” Toro Rosso’s Giorgio Ascanelli told the Italian press. “From what we’ve seen so far, this fight will be amazing.” And Oricchio concluded: “As for HRT and Marussia, who have not even presented their 2012 cars, they undoubtedly have capable people, but also almost as many difficulties.” |

Safetycar: Also Massa looks for actionComments Off In the discussion of the Safetycarphase in Valencia and Lewis Hamilton happy Rennschicksal has now Felipe Massa on. The Ferrari driver also sees a need for action. For he does not understand that it could happen that Hamilton, despite his drive-through penalty he received for overtaking the safety car, was able to keep his second place while he himself kept to the rules and was passed to the rear. Massa had the date on which the safety car after the accident by Mark Webber and Heikki Kovalainen went on the air, but also very unlucky. “At the time when the track was completely under yellow flags, we were already in the last corner. And when I saw the safety car sign, I was already out of the final corner and went out to the start-finish straight” , he describes in his blog on the Ferrari website. “I looked in the mirror and saw that most turned off behind me in the pit lane, as they had seen the sign before the last corner.” While the two Ferrari drivers completed a double stop, drove all the others, they were already on the box, past them. And also because Massa had to wait, was cleared to Alonso, he lost more time. “I’ve fallen back to 18th place and had pinned the whole race to the checkered flag in the transport,” quarrels of the Brazilians, who at the end of the 13th was. If that would have been Rennschicksal gracious to him, Massa would certainly be able to enter a top ranking. For with his F10 he was quite satisfied: “If I look at the performance of the car over the weekend look, I must say that the updates have brought in the aerodynamics and the revised exhaust system on the F10 is a good step forward. So that we can to fight with the front seats. Now it is important to continue to develop until the end of the season. “ |

Lack of funds could cost Chandhok F1 seatComments Off Jun.12 (GMM) Karun Chandhok could be set to lose his formula one seat due to his stream of sponsorship funds drying up. A report in the English language Indian newspaper Hindustan Times on Saturday said the boss of the HRT team, Colin Kolles, is in talks with potential replacements for the 26-year-old from Chennai. Former Midland and Spyker racer Christijan Albers may be one potential candidate. The Dutchman has F1 experience and has driven for Kolles’ formula one, DTM and Le Mans teams. Albers, 31, said this week that he might soon return to F1 “with the help of my loyal sponsors. I have a partner that just might give that final push”. Referring to ‘sources’, Hindustan Times said Narain Karthikeyan and Pastor Maldonado, and HRT third driver Sakon Yamamoto, might also be in the running for Chandhok’s drive. Chandhok acknowledged in Montreal that the Indian corporate world has not fully backed him, while angling for a Force India seat “at some point in my career”. “I’ve been chasing (Indian) sponsors for years in GP2 and formula three and stuff, and there are people who want to get involved but are sitting on the fence,” he said. Chandhok’s influential father, the high-ranking Indian motor racing official Vicky Chandhok, is in Montreal this weekend. |

More pundits back Schumacher amid criticismComments Off
Apr.22 (GMM) Two more of Michael Schumacher’s supporters have backed the seven time world champion amid his currently lacklustre 2010 return to formula one. On Wednesday, Bernie Ecclestone and Norbert Haug hit out at the negative reports about Schumacher’s form in the W01 Mercedes, and now his younger brother Ralf Schumacher is asking the critics to “lay off a bit” and “stay fair”. “He himself knew that, after a three-year break, he could not go in and win again straightaway like before,” 34-year-old Schumacher told the German daily Bild. “But the expectations from outside were, of course, very big. Clearly Michael probably hoped to be somewhat nearer the front after four races. “With regard to the times he is not so far away as the points make it seem. I believe a good result is soon possible,” added Ralf. David Coulthard said in the German press after Shanghai that the weekend had been “the darkest” in the 41-year-old’s entire career. But on Wednesday, ahead of his debut in the DTM series this weekend, Coulthard insisted it is “ridiculous” to write off Schumacher now. Niki Lauda said after China that the German’s performance had been “mediocre” but he thinks it can be remedied with “practice, practice, practice”. And another former GP winner Jochen Mass, who raced in the 70s and 80s, said he is neither “surprised nor disappointed” about Schumacher’s current form. “No one should forget that he hasn’t driven for three years and could do hardly any testing,” he told Express. “We might not see the old Michael back again, but he can still be very good, further forward in the rankings and with a little luck winning again,” added Mass. |

Chinese GP: highlights of Schumacher’s answers to questionsComments Off Schumacher, Mercedes GP driver part of the FIA drivers Thursday press conference, here are highlights of Schumacher’s answers to questions posed to him during the media session.
Do you still feel Mercedes is a little bit behind? Where do you feel it is? How is the development coming along from your point of view? You’ve now been back for three races. Have you found things very different since you left F1 three years ago?
Do you think a younger Michael Schumacher might have been more frustrated with the time it’s taken to get back right to the very top? You seem more relaxed…
Are you not a little disappointed because of this wave of criticism which has been rising up over the last few days, because a lot of people are impatient that you don’t win?
Considering the situation that you explained very well, yesterday Fernando said that in his opinion you are still in the fight for the championship this year. Do you agree with him?
This is the second time you have been in Shanghai over the last four years; do you have any special feelings about this city and also for your professions here? This was the scene of your last Formula One victory before you retired in 2006. Could you talk about the last time you experienced that winning feeling, feeling what that race was like for you, memories of that race and perhaps how you could carry that forward into a lovely result on Sunday? |

Vettel opened his 2010 victory account in SepangComments Off Highlights of the answers given by Malaysian Grand Prix winner Sebastian Vettel, in his Red Bull Racing Renault, during the post race press conference at Sepang
A victory today set up by an excellent start and one that looked fairly comfortable if you ever can be comfortable in the heat of Malaysia.
How much of a relief was that after the last couple of races?
Mark held onto you pretty much in the opening stages but in the second stint he came back at you. Was that all to do with the traffic?
It only took you one race to wipe out the gap to Massa and Alonso, who were quite far ahead. Were you expecting to do that so quickly?
Last year you won the third race, and this year you’ve now won the third race. Are you on the same schedule like last year, to carry on fighting for the championship? |

Alguersuari’s impressionsComments Off The Toro Rosso’s pilot, Jaime Alguersuari is already at the Ricardo Tormo, where he assured he has not yet talked with the team about the season’s objectives. Anyhow, , “it’s all the same to me whomever has to make demands on me, because I’m concentrated on my own business and know where I have to be at,” he explained. The Catalan is optimistic. “This year I’m running because I have the tools to do it,” he pointed out with relation to the poor experience prior to his debut in the race. “As the season advances, I’ll have more tools,” he added.. Alguersuari established as his main “personal” goal to be ahead of Buemi” his Toro Rosso’s team-mate. “One has to be realistic and know where he is at, but I’m in no hurry to be ahead;”, he assured. Regarding him being ahead of Buemi, he stated that the Swiss “is racing with advantage until the first half of the championship,” because he didn’t make it last year. However, he did not venture any clear results. “When the tests are over, I’ll say the position we’re in. It will not be easier than last year. As a matter of fact, I think it will be quite complicated,” he announced in advance. In spite of the difficulties he assured he’s “ready.” “It’s complicated to win because we don’t have the economic resources that others do –Ferrari or McLaren–, but we’re trying to do our best.” The pilot recognized he thinks that it will be possible to “get pole positions” and even win a race. Why not?”, he inquired. Alguersuari thinks that in the Valencia’s tests it will be possible to see “who goes fast and who doesn’t.” “The target is that the car does not have any problems, that it’s reliable and that it does not break down, allowing it to finish the race. Once that is achieved, we’ll expect it to go fast,” he declared. “IT’S A POSITIVE THING THAT THERE ARE SO MANY SPANIARDS.” The pilot described as “positive” that there are “so many Spanish pilots in the F1 grid: himself, Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) and De la Rosa (BMW Sauber). “The rivalry will be among all the pilots and not only between the Spaniards.” The pilot indicated that he’s glad that Pedro Martinez de la Rosa “has a wheel, because its something he wanted for a long time,” he recalled. Alguersuari analyzed the fact that next season it will not be possible to refuel the cars during the race. “This way we’ll see a different type of Formula One. From the fans’ point of view, it’ll be more fun,” he predicted. The pilot believes there will be “more surprises” and that there will not be strategic games.” “There will be a real ‘pole’ in the ranking and not a fictitious one, because the quantity of fuel is the same for everyone.” The pilot thinks the new single-seater ‘STR5′ is a “longer and higher car in its front, but the base is similar to last year’s.” “A good base is the safest thing for everybody,” he added. The idea of the team is to do 500 kilometers by day so to arrive to Bahrain with a good base.” The Spaniard was asked about Michael Schumacher’s comeback to the competition. “His presence is important at technical level and as a professional athlete,” he answered. In addition, he’s a man with “passion for this sport and very few pilots like this can be found.” |

Earnhardt is looking forward to 2010Comments Off
Dale Earnhardt Jr. says he has noticed a change in culture within the Hendrick Motorsports’ shop area, because the group of his people corresponding to car No. 88 shares with the group with Mark Martin’s car No. 5, and that may be a good omen regarding better performance in 2010. From Earnhardt viewpoint, the catalyst for change was Lance McGrew’s appointment as crew chief by the end of the 2009 season. Last May, McGrew was replaced as interim crew chief by Tony Eury Jr., Earnhardt’s cousin. “Even if they achieve minimum progress with regards to performance, and don’t have that bad luck in the races that they had, they will be in conditions to rank for the Chase and have a very, very respectful season.” “When he (McGrew) managed to consolidate his position and we were able to move forward knowing that that was how things were. Yes, everybody somehow combined their minds, faith and trust around that, and we could recover some of the trust and some faith in the team," Earnhardt declared this Friday night at the off-season Thunder Fan Fest that took place in the Daytona International Speedway. Some changes with the personnel that works at the shops have elicited more sense of cooperation between the groups of people who are in charge of the two cars. "When I mentioned the culture, that’s what I was trying to say; I’m referring to both, the cars and the people who is really intertwined between the two groups. The result is that everybody is working and have faith again in the No. 88. That’s what I believe has changed a lot," Earnhardt declared. Martin, who arrived second behind Jimmie Johnson in the Sprint Cup NASCAR Championship, last year, does not think that Earnhardt’s performance has to improve too much, as long as he can overcome the bad luck that derailed promising performances in many races, last year. “In other words, they don’t need to give a great jump regarding performance, if only they take that weight off of their shoulders." "In many races, they performed better than car no. 5, but nobody really realized it, because they were crashed or something broke. Many things went wrong when they were faster than us with car no.5." His team mate, Jeff Gordon thinks that confidence in himself is clue to see a change in Earnhardt, who begins the season after going through a bad patch of 57 races without wins. "Nothing much is necessary to go off the track," Gordon said. "What I mean to say is that everything becomes competition when you’re in the tracks. And I know that sometimes it seems as if they are very far behind, but I don’t think they are as much as people think. I believe that a new beginning is the only thing that’s necessary; a few things. "The organization puts so much effort into each car, that the ingredients are certainly there. I think that, probably what’s missing is more self-confidence. This happens to everybody. If the pilot is confident, the crew chief is confident, the people who work in the boxes are confident. It’s like a waterfall where everything falls from the top. "Let’s hope that all the hard work they’re carrying out in the season’s break will help them to start with the right foot and that self-confidence doesn’t decline too early, because once it does it’s difficult to gain it back." Earnhardt understands the importance of ranking in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. In three of the last five seasons, he has been unable to achieve that goal. "When he didn’t rank for the Chase... I feel I have let them down," Earnhardt, admitted. "They help you to fight all year long. They struggle every week right there, by your side. They go through a work day while they argue with someone who is criticizing me. So, they fight their own battles just as I do in the tracks. "Therefore, you really feel as if you have disappointed them when you don’t even rank for the Chase. What I mean to say is… ¡Damn! One would expect to rank for the Chase. That is not asking too much from your pilots. So you feel very bad. I think that’s what bothers me most about having a disappointing year." |
