Barrichello reveals Ferrari ‘threat’ of 2002(0) Rubens Barrichello has alleged that Ferrari made a threat that might have ended his motor racing career during the infamous 2002 Austrian grand prix. Ten years ago, the Brazilian led the race at the A1-Ring but eventually, at the very last corner, succumbed to team orders that allowed number one teammate Michael Schumacher to pass him. Subsequent video footage has depicted then Ferrari team boss Jean Todt asking Barrichello on the radio to simply “let Michael pass for the championship, please”. But Barrichello, having left F1 at the end of 2011 for a seat in Indycar, says it was not quite as simple as that. “It was eight laps of war,” he is quoted by Brazil’s Globo. “It’s very rare that I lose my temper, but I was screaming on the radio. I kept going right to the end, saying I would not let him pass. “That’s when they said something about something much broader. It was not about the contract. “I cannot tell you what they said, but it was a form of threat that made me think about re-thinking my life, because the great joy for me was driving,” said the 39-year-old. |

Barrichello: Oval driving ‘very different’ to F1(0) Nineteen years of formula one did not prepare Rubens Barrichello for his first taste of driving an Indycar on a high speed oval. The former Ferrari driver, who switched categories for the 2012 season after losing his Williams race seat, tested at the Texas Motor Speedway on Monday. “It was bloody fast,” he is quoted by the Associated Press, “and very, very much different than anything I have ever tried. “I’ve had places that in formula one that they say ‘Oh, it’s almost flat and it’s a big corner and it’s a big challenge’. But the walls were never so close,” the 39-year-old Brazilian enthused. Barrichello’s teammate Tony Kanaan admitted it was “fun” and a rare sight to see his close friend “nervous” prior to getting into a racing car. “It was quite exciting to see how excited he got, and how happy he got out of the car saying how awesome it is,” he said. |

Raikkonen’s managers now take a back seatComments Off
Kimi Raikkonen’s managers have revealed they only now take a back seat in the career of the 2007 world champion. But Steve told Finland’s Turun Sanomat that they only intervene now when the 32-year-old driver requests it — such as when he needed to negotiate last winter with Williams and his ultimate 2012 employer, Lotus. “We came to the end of the road really in late 2009,” he said. That is when Ferrari bought out the rest of Raikkonen’s contract, and he headed to world rally. “We can’t honestly say that we are real rally fans — it’s alien to us, while we know F1 through and through. “When Kimi wanted to go back to F1, he turned to us for help with the agreement. After a few months Kimi got what he wanted.” Robertson, however, explained that the father-son duo are no longer involved in the “day to day” running of Raikkonen’s career. “I have known Kimi for 11, 12 years, and he has become really close to us. When he asks for help, he knows that we are always ready to give it,” he continued. “I was delighted when he wanted to come back where he really belongs (in F1),” said Robertson. “There is so much nonsense about Kimi’s problems with motivation. “The truth is that he wanted to come back for one reason only — because he is super-motivated to race in F1 again. “By taking Kimi, it shows the (Lotus) team’s desire to succeed. I think Kimi and Romain Grosjean are a good combination. “By changing the drivers the team has showed that it was not satisfied with the level of last year and that they want to come back to being among the big teams,” he concluded. |

Details: Marussia MR01Comments Off Marussia Racing’s new MR01 finally made its first on-track appearance during a promotional ‘filming’ day at Silverstone, just a few miles from is Banbury base. The Anglo-Russian team endured a torrid time in its attempts to get the car ready for the third and final group test at Barcelona last week, having skipped the opening session in Jerez to prepare the MR01 for early March, only to fail the mandatory FIA crash tests. Although both Timo Glock and rookie Charles Pic got some miles under their belts in Barcelona last month, it was at the wheel of the 2011-spec car, leaving them preciously short of time in the new machine ahead of its race debut in Melbourne next weekend. The Silverstone shakedown, part of a promotional event ahead of the car’s departure for the Australian Grand Prix, will provide both team and driver with vital information on the new machine, which has been conceived after a ground-up re-evaluation of the way Marussia designs its racing cars. As such, the car is almost entirely new, with very few carry-over components from last year’s Marussia Virgin MVR-02. The desire to make a clean break from the previous CFD-only creations presented the design team, led by technical consultant Pat Symonds, with the challenge of going back to basics to produce a solid mechanical package, whilst maintaining an eye towards achieving the incremental performance steps required to move the team forward. The starting point for the design programme was a consideration of the people and resources available to the Banbury-based team. The former three-base operation has been consolidated into one site, the Marussia Technical Centre in Banbury, bringing the various elements of the business together to form ‘one team’. In particular, the design department and practices now benefit from far greater integration and collaboration. Furthermore, the aerodynamic department has been completely restructured and the aero methodology reinforced, blurring the boundaries between CFD and experimental work in the wind tunnel, as well as enhancing the fidelity of the team’s aero approach. The technical partnership forged with McLaren Applied Technologies in July of last year has also been influential in the design process and the relationship is starting to yield benefit as the advanced facilities that the Marussia team has access to have been used to prove the correlation process with the MVR-02. It is however early in the relationship and the MR01 will become a beneficiary of the relationship in due course. The key design priorities were to address previous aerodynamic deficiencies and, mechanically, achieve greater weight saving. At the same time, a lot of the detail of the car has been refined and the design team have been a little more adventurous than before, stepping closer to the engineering boundaries. The car can best be described as a significant evolution of its predecessors. The relationship with McLaren is also evident, as the MR01 is only the second car launched this season, after the Woking giant’s MP4-27, to eschew the stepped nose concept favoured by the rest of the field. “We are very pleased to be running the new MR01 for the first time this morning,” team principal John Booth admitted, “It has been a long and frustrating wait for everyone in the team, but we can now get back on track – literally – and start working towards the first race of the season in Australia next weekend. “Today is the first of two promotional events, so while the drivers will be able to get a feel for the car, they won’t be able to draw any real conclusions until we start running in anger in Melbourne. Nevertheless, this is an important day for us and we’ll enjoy every minute on track with the new car.” Glock turned the first laps with the MR01, beginning his third season with the team and providing the all-important element of continuity required to keep moving the package forward. He is joined in 2012 by Frenchman Pic, who embarks on his rookie year in F1, having made the step up from GP2 to replace Belgium’s Jerome d’Ambrosio. Both drivers will get track time with the new car over the next two days, albeit running on demonstration tyres as opposed to the Pirelli P-Zeros that they will use once competition starts in Melbourne. |

Brawn admits Mercedes ‘slower than Red Bull’Comments Off Ross Brawn has admitted Mercedes’ new 2012 car is not ready to take on the best teams in formula one. Other team figures for the German marque’s Brackley outfit this week said the target for 2012 is third place, with the title not a realistic goal until 2014. “On the positive side, our car is reliable and it’s a step forward, but we are still not where we want to be,” added Brawn. He confirmed that the goal for 2012 is to finish behind the top title challengers. “Third place, one better than last year,” said Brawn. “Anything better than that, of course, is welcome.” He said Mercedes has been aggressive with the design of the W03, “But we have not reinvented the racing car”. “Red Bull has the advantage of building on a very good foundation.” |

Kubica can drive F1 car again(1) One of Robert Kubica’s doctors has revealed that the Pole is already driving a road car and preparing to step imminently behind the wheel of a much faster vehicle. That would likely race him long past Renault’s deadline as the team presses ahead with deciding its next driver lineup. But Kubica’s hand surgeon Igor Rossello has told Polish radio Trojce this week that the driver “has recovered; he can move and lift with all his fingers. “We can now think about getting him back as soon as possible into a car. Sorry, into a racing car, because he is already in a (road) car. “His recovery is a miracle but the unknown thing is whether he will be able to be as fast. “We still have to do a small intervention for improving the mobility of his wrist, as with this type of accident the hand is never as flexible as it was before. Then it will take a lot of exercise. “But he will be able to drive his formula one car again and press all the buttons — we’re talking about a racing driver, not a pianist,” added Rossello. “I look at him and I can’t stop wondering how well it has all gone; all the breaks and the wounds have healed, the only question is whether he will drive as he did before. “He will have some limitations; remember that we considered amputation. “But that (whether he is fast enough) will be assessed by the (F1) specialists. We have done our job perfectly.” |

Renault livery could break Canadian law(1) Renault’s new black and gold livery might fall afoul of strict anti-tobacco advertising laws in Canada this year. The 2011 Lotus Renault GP livery is a tribute to the Lotus cars of the 70s and 80s, whose black and gold colours were to promote Imperial Tobacco’s John Player Special cigarette brand. Group Lotus CEO Dany Bahar recently played down the latter fact, insisting that the 2011 Renault livery will not have any “negative implications with potential tobacco advertising”. But a Health Canada spokesperson revealed that if a F1 car did resemble a cigarette packet whilst racing on Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, “tobacco inspectors would need to fully review to assess whether a violation of the Tobacco Act has occurred”. An Imperial Tobacco spokesperson said: “It is categorically against the law to present any likeness to a cigarette pack. “If I were Lotus (Renault) … I would be concerned — I wonder if they are aware of the law in Canada.” |

Polyphony Digtial has today fully revealed the “X1 Prototype”Comments Off Polyphony Digtial has today fully revealed the “X1 Prototype”, a project in conjunction with Red Bull Racing. All races that exist in today’s world are restricted by regulations. However the X1 is a machine born from a fantastic “what if” dream of Polyphony; “What would the fastest racing car on Earth, free of any and all regulations look like?” Initially the X1 prototype was a single seater, canopied prototype wing car with covered front wheels. The performance brought about by the 1500ps direct injection V6 Twin Turbo would have been spectacular as is, with a top speed of 400km/h and a maximum lateral acceleration of 6G. But this concept showed an even greater advancement through the help of Red Bull Racing, who became a partner in this project. Red Bull Racing’s chief technical officer, the genius aerodynamicist Adrian Newey proposed that “Fan Car” technology, a dream that he had held to himself over the years be added to the X1 Prototype. A “fan car” is a vehicle having a fan mechanism which forces the air out from underneath the car, to reduce air pressure under the car’s floor. The resulting suction draws the car to the ground surface and creates a massive amount of downforce. And because it can create downforce regardless of the vehicle’s current speed, it dramatically raises it’s cornering speed even in low speed corners. The incredible ability of fan cars has already been proven in history. The Chaparral 2J fan car entered in the 1970 Can-Nam series was so fast that it was banned after just 1 season. Even in the F1, the BT46B fan car entered in 1978 by Brabham dominated the opening round of the series with extreme speed, and was banned just after that single race. With this proposal from Mr. Newey, the machine was transformed with a large fan added to the rear end of the body. With additional advice regarding the shapes of the front and rear wings and rear diffuser, its aerodynamics became even further refined. As a result, the X1 prototype attained an astonishing level of performance, reaching a top speed of over 450km/h, with a maximum lateral acceleration reaching up to 8.75G. This is a performance level that is at the very limits of what a normal human body can withstand. The driver who performed the shakedown test of the machine in Gran Turismo 5, was the world famous Sebastian Vettel. In his very first run on the Suzuka Circuit, he shortened the record time of the course by over 20 seconds. And in the test drive on the Nurburgring GP Course, he marked a record time of 1 minute 4 seconds, drawing out the incredible potential of the X1 Prototype. This is the dream of the fastest racing car on land, brought to life through the collaboration between Polyphony and Red Bull. Witness for yourself the power of the X1 through the in-game “X1 Challenge”, the first driving lesson ever in Gran Turismo to be performed by a top professional driver. Adrian Newey, Chief Technical Officer at Red Bull Racing The results were thrilling. X1 is about evolution. Delivering the optimum combination of tested technologies in a single integrated design. This would be the future of racing were we not bound by regulations, but one that is achievable today. And as Sebastian has shown, it is about devastating speed coupled with real handling control. Today thanks to PlayStation®3 and Gran Turismo we can test drive the future. Kazunori Yamauchi, President, Polyphony Digital Inc and creator of the Gran Turismo series X1 sees the marriage of virtual and real worlds as we explore the boundaries of our technology and aesthetic senses. The X1 Prototype Project has been motivated by curiosity and passion, powerful forces that brought together the best the world has to offer in design, physics simulation, racing car product technology and driving. X1 Downforce Specifications Lets try calculating the cornering G’s of the X1 at 300km/h from the total tire load and coefficient of friction for the tires. The total load on the X1′s tires at 300km/h is 1142.7kgf at the front tires, and 1432kgf at the rear tires. The coefficient of friction for the tires isμ=1.97. From these conditions, the maximum cornering force that the tires can exhibit can be determined to be 5073kgf. Dividing this by the wet weight of the X1 of 615kg comes to be 8.25, which is the maximum cornering G of the X1. 8.25G greatly exceeds the G’s felt during the launch of the Space Shuttle, and is roughly the same as that of a jet fighter plane at full afterburner. It is a figure at the very limits of what a human body can withstand. De la Rosa urges support for HRTComments Off Ex-Sauber driver Pedro de la Rosa to bring in his fellow countrymen of HRT to continue his racing career in position Sauber has thrown out the 39-year-old now – and lack of alternatives can imagine the current Pirelli test driver means, 2011 to drive for HRT. He was in contact with the family Carabantes, who runs the Spanish cycling team, he says, and adds to the news agency ‘EFE’ to: “If your project is sporty interesting and ambitious, then I will gladly come to them.” Currently, there is but “no hurry”. “For Spain, it is important to a Formula 1 team to have, and their investment is worth something,” de la Rosa says of the Carabantes. “We have a team, but we do not receive the best value within a few months they have brought a car to the starting line and next year they will again have a car, but the project needs more support -. Not only for companies but also by riders like me and the fans. We need to stand behind them! “ |

Marko: Red Bull and Renault-Power 2011Comments Off Last year there were Red Bull and Renault engine supplier to a few races to fight for the title of Formula 1, but even then, the team flirted to Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber in order to replace the units in the rear of the racing cars by Mercedes engines. If it has not been known – and a renewed attempt now seems to fail. This calculates at least Helmut Marko, Red Bull motorsport consultant to “As the Mercedes engine is apparently not have, according to recent statements of the Mercedes executives, we will probably stay at Renault as an engine supplier,” says the former Formula-1 -driver with ‘Sport Bild’ – all the Red-Bull-Renault wins so far achieved with force. |

Valencia: Paul di Resta drive to Force India on fridayComments Off
Paul di Resta in Valencia again gets the chance on Friday to show his talent. The Force India test driver in the morning to climb into the cockpit of Adrian Sutil, Vitantonio Liuzzi as the track in Valencia does not know and therefore needed every yard. Also at Silverstone di Resta must gain experience in the premier class. There, he will then take the vehicle from Liuzzi. Originally it was planned that the DTM-Star on Friday often is used. Monaco was augrund the unique characteristics of the track not on the plan. In Turkey and Canada in Force India began the first time an F-bay system. Thus, both race drivers were able to get used to the handling, di Resta could only work in the background. |

Ferrari: Shooting for the perfect timeComments Off
The new Ferrari superstar Fernando Alonso has spent nearly two eventful days in Maranello. Like team-mate Felipe Massa, the Spaniards began on Thursday in the simulator of the Italians to be able to zero in on the next Grand Prix in the streets of Valencia. Same time, we simulated the latest updates on the Ferrari F10. In view of the extensive remodeling of the Formula 1 car the Italians arrived just in that shooting was planned in Fiorano. After Alonso Ferrari for some customers as well-known “driving instructor” on the test track on the way, he was allowed to rise in the better cars. It was the first time that the two-time world champion moved a Formula 1 car at the Ferrari home track. Rides with current Formula 1 cars are also in times of current test limits for the purpose of filming permits. Interesting still, published by the Alonso-Ferrari at Fiorano more precisely a single photo. It shows the F10 from the front. The most extensive changes to the B version will be found, however, at the rear … |

Kubica: The Grand Prix of Canada is something like my destiny raceComments Off Robert Kubica and Montreal – that’s a Hochschaubahn: 2007 pilot of the accident, the then BMW Sauber F1 Team at the hairpin difficult, but escaped miraculously with minor injuries. A year later he led a complete surprise double victory of his team ahead of Nick Heidfeld – it was the only win for the Bavarians in the premier class. Last year there was no race in Montreal – Kubica this year but returns to the Ile de Notre Dame. “The Grand Prix of Canada is something like my destiny race,” says the poles ‘Auto Bild motorsport’. And so he feels: This year a sensation in the air – “with little luck.” Because: “The course our car will be. It’s fast on the straights and is as wonderfully out of slow corners. It is these properties are required in Montreal.” The strength in tight corners is based on the small wheel base of the Renault R30 – no current Formula 1 racing car can compete in this discipline with Kubica’s car. It showed the team had in Monaco, where the 25-year-old is the sharpest of the superior competitor Red Bull pilot was. And although the Renault engine has a power deficit, Kubica and Vitaly Petrov scores are in the top speed is always at the front – reason is the low air resistance of the R30. Moreover, the French have for the Grand Prix of Canada, a secret weapon in the quiver: the first time is given to an in-house interpretation of the F-shaft system, which turned out on the long straights of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve as a great advantage. Now the only question is whether the system works right away, or if you have it like Red Bull in Turkey to expand after the first test. That will leave Robert Kubica after just one season, the team Renault is unlikely. After Felipe Massa contract extension with Ferrari in Maranello in 2012 the door is closed. Even if the pole for 2011 is not linked to Renault, there are few other enticing options. This Renault boss Eric Boullier had managed to retain its number-one pilots in 2011 and to his team. The Luxembourg wants to build the Renault racing team to head the Polish pilots around. (MotorSportsTotal) |

New American team eyes F1 debutComments Off In the wake of the USF1 calamity, another American group has signalled its intention to race in formula one next year. Cypher Group confirmed on Thursday that it has submitted a “letter of interest” about obtaining the 13th and final spot on the 2011 grid. The company said it consists of “experienced F1 engineers, designers and businessmen” whose objective “is to create a successful US-based F1 team”. Cypher said it “recognises the significant challenges” of building a team in a short amount of time and will therefore “utilise ‘best of breed’ components throughout the car”. “In support of this strategy Cypher is in contact with established manufacturers of formula one racing cars and components,” the outfit added. “Our aims are ultimately to be competitive and provide unrivalled access and interaction for our supporters whilst maintaining high standards of integrity and values, alongside creative out of the box thinking.” Cypher clarified that it has not yet lodged a formal entry to compete next year. The outfit said it will only do so “should we achieve fully the budget we believe is necessary to do this properly. “We are not in this to embarrass America, the fans or ourselves. We simply want to give America the shot it deserves.” (GMM) |
