Briatore writing rules for ‘GP1′ series(0) Flavio Briatore could be readying to burst back into formula one. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport said the ousted and formerly banned Italian is busily writing regulations for a ‘GP1′ championship. They could be adopted should the FIA not sign up to the 2013 Concorde Agreement, according to the report. Apparently, the political rumblings in F1 at present are not limited to the sport’s planned floatation, or Bernie Ecclestone’s spat with Mercedes. Cost-control is also a buzzword. As reported recently, the vast majority of F1′s teams want the FIA to enshrine cost-cutting in the actual sporting regulations, even to the point of pushing for a once highly-controversial budget cap. F1 chief executive Ecclestone, however, is not famously close with the FIA’s new president Jean Todt, and according to Auto Motor und Sport he is not convinced that the Paris federation needs to write and control the rules. Enter Briatore. The German report said Ferrari will be a fan of the former Renault chief’s rumoured regulations, as they steer away from the premium on aerodynamics. |

Vettel shrugs at F1′s ‘crazy’ pecking order(0) Five races in, F1′s cleverest brains are still yet to decode the mystery of the bizarre and fascinating 2012 season. As was the case when he utterly dominated last year, Sebastian Vettel is still leading the drivers’ points chase. But, before last weekend, if he had been told that Williams’ Pastor Maldonado would be the winner of the Spanish grand prix, the German admitted: “Well, I would have put a lot of money on them! “I think the odds weren’t bad,” he smiled. Indeed, the major British bookmaker William Hill was taking bets at 500-1 prior to the Barcelona weekend. A spokesman confirmed that only two bets at 10 pounds or above were placed on Maldonado prior to qualifying. “I’m sure Williams don’t understand why they just won the race here,” McLaren’s Jenson Button is quoted by the Guardian newspaper. But the previously-derided ‘pay driver’ Maldonado is not the only potential new winner in 2012, after Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg and Vettel won the opening four grands prix. A detailed look at F1′s specialist reporting in the past few weeks shows that Lewis Hamilton, Mark Webber, Kimi Raikkonen, Romain Grosjean, Michael Schumacher, Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi are all also widely regarded as genuine victory candidates in 2012. And given that their teammates have won grands prix this season, even the struggling Felipe Massa and Bruno Senna should be added to that list. “Dammit, let’s go for (HRT’s) Karthikeyan!” wrote Chris Hockley in the Sun newspaper. “It’s really quite crazy right now,” Vettel, who despite his young age would count himself among F1′s currently perplexed purists, told Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. “What’s happening is difficult for us to explain,” he added. The situation has split the F1 audience, with the purists shaking their heads, and others marvelling at the unprecedented spectacle. “The spectacle has taken over the sport,” said the Paris daily Le Figaro. “Even the teams can’t be sure who will be the hare and who will be the tortoise at any given track,” wrote Hockley. Alonso, who is the joint championship leader, is in the purists’ camp. “Of course it is attractive for the spectators that we are going to Monaco not knowing if we will fight for victory or be left out of the points,” he is quoted by El Pais. “But in a way, after eleven years in formula one and now I’m at Ferrari, I would like to have more stability,” the Spaniard admitted. Sir Jackie Stewart said: “What’s going on is unbelievable, which I think is the outcome of the new rules, new tyres — I think it’s many factors,” he told the Spanish sports daily AS. “What’s happening,” said Maldonado’s race engineer Xevi Pujolar, “is that these tyres are allowing teams who do not have the biggest budgets to be eligible for really good results. “The reason is that the most important thing now is to have a good setup and also some luck with the temperature.” Pirelli, F1′s tyre maker, has received both criticism and praise for its huge role. “Pirelli have been both bold and brave,” Sun journalist Hockley said. “It can’t be easy for a manufacturer to make tyres that sometimes wear out faster than you can say Mercedes.” Marco Tronchetti Provera, the Italian marque’s company chief, is unapologetic. “What we have provided is what the teams have asked for, and it was not easy,” Italian language reports quote him saying. “Our engineers have done an extraordinary thing.” |

Vettel says McLaren ‘the team to beat’Comments Off McLaren remains “the team to beat” despite the topsy-turvy outcome of the recent Malaysian grand prix. That is the claim of reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel, having slumped to sixth in the drivers’ standings after a dire weekend in Malaysia. The formerly-dominant Red Bull driver now lags a Ferrari and even a Sauber, after Fernando Alonso and the unlikely Sergio Perez proved the cream of the slippery Sepang circuit. Vettel, however, is still thinking silver. Asked by the French-language RMC Sport to name the ‘best team’ of the moment, the German answered: “There are several. “But McLaren seems very strong right now. They are the team to beat,” said Vettel. The trophy enthusiast received a small memento on the Melbourne podium last month, but a more impressive prize was the prestigious Grand Prix de l’Academie des Sports that he collected from FIA president Jean Todt recently in Paris. “That was my first trophy (of 2012),” he laughed, “but I want much more than that! “It’s a long championship,” Vettel argued. “We did quite a good job in Australia, and Malaysia was chaotic with the weather. “We have a good car and the objective is to fight for the title.” |

Vettel not apologising after Karthikeyan attackComments Off World champion Sebastian Vettel was unapologetic this week, having shown his Indian rival Narain Karthikeyan the middle finger recently in Malaysia. The German also called the HRT-driving backmarker a “gherkin” and “idiot” in the aftermath of their Sepang clash that cost Vettel fourth place. “I lost a solid fourth place so that’s obviously disappointing,” the 24-year-old is quoted by German media, including Sport Bild, after being asked this week about his loss of temper at Karthikeyan. It was suggested Vettel might have breached the FIA’s code of conduct, but it is believed the governing body has decided the stewards properly investigated the incident in Malaysia. And Vettel is unapologetic. “Sometimes you let some emotion show and I don’t think someone should be ashamed about that,” he said. “It’s part of the sport.” Vettel, having utterly dominated a year ago, is now just sixth in the drivers’ points standings after two races. “Of course I would have preferred a slightly better start (to 2011),” he admitted, “but it’s a long season. “We have a very good car and I still have a good chance — it is still the goal to fight for the title,” he said in Paris, where he accepted the ‘Grands Prix de l’Academie des Sports 2011′ award. “Only a few hours ago I was in the simulator, preparing for China and Bahrain. We should hopefully have a few good improvements, but we need to prove that at the tracks,” said Vettel. |

No French GP return announcement yetComments Off New media reports have contradicted claims French PM Francois Fillon will on Friday announce the country’s 2013 return to the formula one calendar. Le Parisien newspaper on Thursday said Fillon’s visit to the Paul Ricard circuit on Friday is to confirm the successful end to long negotiations to revive the French grand prix. Those negotiations were for Paul Ricard to annually alternate a race date with Belgium’s fabled Spa Francorchamps. But the French-language RMC insists that Belgium is “not ready for the alternation”. “If France has received a contract to organise a grand prix every other year, this is not the case for the Belgian promoters, who are still waiting for the document to send to the government of Wallonia,” the report read. RMC said the hold-up could be because Spa is having trouble paying its sanctioning fee for this year’s race date in September. The French magazine Sport-Auto agrees, insisting that Fillon “will not announce the return of the grand prix de France on Friday”. “The prime minister will travel to the (Paul Ricard) circuit,” an official close to Fillon is quoted as saying by AFP news agency, but Fillon “will not announce the return of the grand prix to the calendar in 2013″. The official, however, said Bernie Ecclestone as approved “in principle” France’s presence on the calendar every other year, beginning in 2013. But “It (the alternation) will not necessarily be with Belgium,” the report added. In an interview to be published by the Nice-Matin newspaper on Friday, Fillon is quoted as saying a grand prix is crucial to France. “Bernie Ecclestone has just sent us a draft contract,” said the prime minister, “which is the result of negotiations that began several months ago. “We now have a concrete basis for discussions,” he added. |

Vettel risks penalty for ‘middle finger’ tiradeComments Off The FIA could sanction F1′s reigning back-to-back world champion for his behaviour during the recent Malaysian grand prix. Before calling backmarker Narain Karthikeyan a “gherkin” and “idiot” in the wake of their collision, Sebastian Vettel was captured by his on-board camera twice displaying his middle-finger to the Indian driver. “I think he’s highly frustrated because he’s having a tough season,” Karthikeyan told the Deccan Chronicle on Wednesday. “It’s completely unprofessional to blame me for the incident. The derogatory remark only goes to show him in bad light. “Just because he has a good car, he can’t call others an idiot,” Karthikeyan continued. “I have won races in all the previous single-seater championships I have participated in so I don’t need a certificate from Vettel.” Reports in Germany, including in the Kolner Express, Bild and Die Welt newspapers, claim that Red Bull driver’s behaviour may have breached the new stricter code of conduct introduced by FIA president Jean Todt. The FIA has been contacted for comment. “He has breached the code of conduct,” former F1 driver Marc Surer told Germany’s Sky television. “You sign it when you get the license and then you have to behave correspondingly. “Any behaviour that hurts other people or the sport is an offense,” added the Swiss. Asked what the penalties might be, Surer explained: “Anything from a warning to a license revocation. In this case I think it was quite understandable and there will be a mild punishment, if there is anything.” Hans-Joachim Stuck, however, is slightly less forgiving. “When you’re overtaking, misunderstandings can occur. I think Vettel needs to learn this. “With him, the curve was always upwards and now it’s not the case, and he needs to deal with that,” the German legend told the DAPD news agency. As for Vettel’s description of Karthikeyan as a “gherkin”, Stuck insisted: “It’s better than ‘asshole’.” Vettel’s attack, however, was sustained, with Kleine Zeitung newspaper now quoting the Red Bull driver as having said: “Maybe formula one is not the place to learn how to drive.” Stuck responded: “If Sebastian had left more space, it would not have happened. It happens sometimes so it’s a racing incident. “He (Karthikeyan) didn’t do it on purpose and it always takes two.” The HRT driver hit back by calling Vettel a “bully”, and even David Coulthard – a Red Bull team consultant – defended Karthikeyan. “He can’t make his car invisible,” the Scot is quoted as saying by the Mirror. Also defending Karthikeyan was Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg, who told the Indian press this week: “From what I saw, it was not Narain’s fault. “So I don’t really understand why he (Vettel) said all that.” Hukenberg’s Force India teammate Paul di Resta added: “Narain is entitled to do as much on the track in comparison with someone like Vettel. “Both are F1 drivers and are there to represent their teams.” |

HRT was ‘risky team’ for SennaComments Off HRT was a “risky team” for Bruno Senna to drive for in 2010, the Brazilian’s mother Viviane has admitted. “What matters is that the team can give Bruno the best conditions to develop his ability,” Viviane Senna told TV Globo. “I was not happy with Hispania. They had no spare parts, so if something was broken it would be patched up for the next race. You never knew when the next thing was going to break. “Yes, that was a risky team,” she admitted. Many observers see 2012 as 28-year-old Senna’s last chance to prove he is even a shadow of his late, great uncle. Viviane insisted: “People remember Ayrton the winner, the champion, but few remember how long he took to get there. “Bruno went from nothing to F1 in five years. It’s an unfair comparison to those who have done it (racing) for their whole lives.” |

Pollock’s Pure to use Toyota facilitiesComments Off BAR founder Craig Pollock’s new 2014 engine supply venture, Pure, is setting up camp in Cologne. The report said Pure, to move shortly, needs better facilities than it currently has at its Paris headquarters. “We have signed an exclusive agreement with TMG (Toyota Motorsport GmbH),” Scotland-born Pollock is quoted as saying. He said the deal involves office space, a workshop and engine test stands. Pollock explained that time and cost factors explains why Pure did not set up its own factory. But he said there is plenty of time left to find at least two F1 team customers for 2014. Pollock also said Pure will retain its French headquarters as a business base. |

France, Belgium yet to agree race fee with EcclestoneComments Off Bernie Ecclestone is leading the negotiations as France tries to return to the formula one calendar. RMC Sport reports that Paris has formally requested Ecclestone, F1′s chief executive, send them the contract. But the report said a crucial detail is missing: the necessary race fee. As those negotiations begin, it is revealed that Eric Boullier – the Lotus team’s French team principal – met with Ecclestone in London on Wednesday to talk about it. Boullier had tried to “speed things up”, the French language report said. RMC added that Spa-Francorchamps’ Belgian promoters currently spend EUR 22.5 million per race on the grand prix, a figure neither they nor France are willing to pay in 2013 and beyond. “Both have set a maximum of EUR 15 million per race,” said the report. The responsible Belgian minister, Jean-Claude Marcourt, declined to comment. |

Prost: France solution ‘better than nothing’Comments Off Alain Prost has backed France’s touted return in 2013 to the formula one calendar. “That’s a closed chapter,” he rued, according to the Russian website F1News. “I really regret that, because – believe me – it was the best project I had seen in a long time.” The latest proposal is for France’s Paul Ricard to share an annually alternating grand prix date with Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium’s fabled and much loved circuit. Prost said: “Obviously the best thing would be for France and Belgium to have their own grands prix each year. “But unfortunately you have to admit that Europe is facing great difficulties, so if this is the only way for the race to happen, then why not? “It’s better than nothing,” he said. |

Experts expect 2012 to be close fight in F1Comments Off The precise pecking-order is clouded, but one thing is clear: 2012 looks set to be a highly competitive season in formula one. Earlier this week, Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg was the pacesetter, causing Mercedes’ Norbert Haug to tell Bild newspaper: “That’s great.” “I didn’t expect that,” agreed world champion Sebastian Vettel. Hulkenberg smiled: “‘Test champion’ gives me nothing. But I am in good shape.” Vettel continued to Kleine Zeitung newspaper: “This year everything is closer together”, he said, after his teammate Mark Webber admitted there is “no question” Red Bull needs to keep working on the pace of its new RB8. According to Die Welt newspaper, Vettel continued: “Most of the competitors are difficult to assess. It’s the same old game.” He is referring to unknown fuel levels, tyre age and differing approaches and programmes — and teams’ deliberate sandbagging or ‘show-run’ efforts. “I never paid too much attention to direct comparisons on headline laptimes,” insisted David Coulthard, “but on the longer runs you can start to build a picture.” Williams engineer Mark Gillan told Auto Motor und Sport: “It seems as though the entire field has moved much closer together. It will be a tough fight.” An early assessment of the pecking order might have Red Bull and McLaren at the front, and Mercedes and Lotus possibly ready to join the fight. “It looks like Red Bull are fairly stable,” Coulthard agreed to Russia’s Ria Novosti news agency, “(and) McLaren and Mercedes maybe closer than they were. “Ferrari is a bit of an unknown but I wouldn’t write them off. FIA moves even harder to stop diffuser blowingComments Off The FIA is moving to clamp down even harder on the aerodynamic use of exhaust gases ahead of the 2012 season. But Italy’s Autosprint reports that, following fears the new rules could also have been exploited by teams, the FIA has “turned the screw” even tighter. The Paris federation has reportedly said that the 2012 version of the software to electronically control the engine will be “even more limited” than was previously expected. Williams’ new chief engineer Mark Gillan is quoted as saying: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a year when there were no loopholes in the technical regulations. “That is one of the most enjoyable aspects of our work — to seek out areas in which the rules are vague and can be exploited.” |

Brazil legend claims Ferrari slows number 2 driversComments Off Some F1 teams work to manipulate the performance of their two drivers, according to Fritz d’Orey. He said on the SporTV programme ‘Linha de Chegada’ this week that Ferrari manipulated the situation some years ago to ensure Rubens Barrichello was not as fast as his number 1 teammate Michael Schumacher. “Alain Prost told me at a dinner in Paris that they did it to Barrichello when he was going too strongly in relation to Schumacher,” he said. Another legendary Brazilian driver, 73-year-old Bird Clemente, agrees: “That’s right. I’m sure it still exists. “The team as well as the sponsors are making a big investment. FIA proposes unanimous axe for blown exhaust clampdownComments Off The FIA has proposed to scrap its controversial mid-season clampdown on blown exhausts. As Red Bull and McLaren battled over the extent and details of the clampdown, Ferrari was left smiling on Saturday as it came closer than ever in 2011 to the front of the field. “Normally on tracks like this we’d be further down the road,” acknowledged Red Bull pole sitter Mark Webber. “There might be a bit of a form card starting to build, but we need some more races to see if that is the case.” Asked if he thinks his Australian friend is right, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso said: “It’s a difficult question to answer.” It might never have to be answered, as the governing body is now proposing to definitively end the complicated debate and revert to the pre-Silverstone rules whilst waiting for a seamless ban in 2012. The FIA said in a statement that the status quo will remain for Silverstone, but beyond that “the viability of returning to the pre-Silverstone set-ups and strategies” is being discussed. “If the teams are in unanimous agreement, the FIA is prepared to adopt this arrangement until the end of the current season,” the Paris federation added. |
