Raikkonen asks Lotus for rally Finland permission(0) Kimi Raikkonen has revealed he would like to contest August’s rally of Finland. F1′s 2007 world champion returned from world rallying to grand prix racing this year. “Of course I wanted to do better. But I’m not finished. I want to go back, whether for my career or after I don’t know,” the 32-year-old told Motorsport News, according to the official WRC website. Earlier, Raikkonen admitted he had sidelined his rallying career for now in order to concentrate on F1. Before the 2011 season, Lotus’ (then Renault) regular driver Robert Kubica was seriously injured in a rally crash, and is still yet to return to the sport. “I’d like to do rally Finland this season as it fits with the calendar but you’ll have to ask the team if it fits in my contract,” Raikkonen said. |

Finance police raid Monza(0) There is trouble afoot at Monza, the scene of the famous and historic Italian grand prix. On Tuesday morning, Italy’s finance police the Guardia di Finanza entered the Autodromo Nazionale to investigate seven people involved with the operation of the circuit. According to Il Giorno and La Repubblica, the Monza prosecutor suspects tax offenses, false invoicing and other discrepancies in relation to Sias SpA, the circuit operator, between 2007 and 2012. Among the suspected offenses is the issuing of invoices for non-existent transactions in order to show a positive balance sheet for the running of some events. The officers raided the Sias offices and also the home of the circuit director, Enrico Ferrari, and other high ranking officials. |

Klien: Alonso ‘stands out’ amid 2012 chaos(0) Even amid the chaos of the 2012 pecking order, the star performer is obvious. That is the view of former F1 driver Christian Klien, who confirmed to the Austrian news agency APA that one of his current roles is a simulator driver for the sport’s latest winning team, Williams. “It (2012) is very open,” he said, “but for me Fernando Alonso stands out.” Equal with Sebastian Vettel, Spaniard Alonso is at the top of the drivers’ world championship, a full eight points clear of Lewis Hamilton. The Spaniard’s car has been the struggling Ferrari F2012, but he has never finished a race this season lower than ninth (China). He has therefore scored points at every opportunity, even finishing first and second in Malaysia and Spain respectively. “Alonso has an inferior car,” Klien explained, “but he uses every single little opportunity. “He is the most complete driver who gets the most out of the package he has.” Triple world champion Sir Jackie Stewart agrees that, among arguably the most competitive grid of drivers since the late 80s, Alonso is the standout performer. “Right now we have the best generation of drivers we’ve had for a while,” the famous Scot told the Spanish sports daily AS. “Everyone talks about Vettel, who is a great driver, and also Hamilton of course, but there is also Button, Schumacher, Kimi — all champions. “There are others like Webber who also have the quality to win, young drivers coming up, many of them are very good, but also it is true that Alonso is fantastic.” Asked why the Spaniard has not added a title to his tally since 2006, Stewart said: “The explanation is easy — he hasn’t had the luck to get the best car. “Now he has one that isn’t good, but it’s in those circumstances that you see even more the quality that he has,” said Stewart. Given Alonso’s push to the top of the championship with a sub-standard car, therefore, all the talk about Ferrari writing off the 2012 championship has been silenced for now. “We have to keep developing the car,” Stefano Domenicali, Ferrari’s team boss, said after Barcelona, where significant upgrades were brought to the F2012 package. “We are not yet fast enough to consistently fight for the podium, but that is the only option if we want to be in contention for the title,” he insisted. |

Vettel shrugs at F1′s ‘crazy’ pecking order(0) Five races in, F1′s cleverest brains are still yet to decode the mystery of the bizarre and fascinating 2012 season. As was the case when he utterly dominated last year, Sebastian Vettel is still leading the drivers’ points chase. But, before last weekend, if he had been told that Williams’ Pastor Maldonado would be the winner of the Spanish grand prix, the German admitted: “Well, I would have put a lot of money on them! “I think the odds weren’t bad,” he smiled. Indeed, the major British bookmaker William Hill was taking bets at 500-1 prior to the Barcelona weekend. A spokesman confirmed that only two bets at 10 pounds or above were placed on Maldonado prior to qualifying. “I’m sure Williams don’t understand why they just won the race here,” McLaren’s Jenson Button is quoted by the Guardian newspaper. But the previously-derided ‘pay driver’ Maldonado is not the only potential new winner in 2012, after Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg and Vettel won the opening four grands prix. A detailed look at F1′s specialist reporting in the past few weeks shows that Lewis Hamilton, Mark Webber, Kimi Raikkonen, Romain Grosjean, Michael Schumacher, Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi are all also widely regarded as genuine victory candidates in 2012. And given that their teammates have won grands prix this season, even the struggling Felipe Massa and Bruno Senna should be added to that list. “Dammit, let’s go for (HRT’s) Karthikeyan!” wrote Chris Hockley in the Sun newspaper. “It’s really quite crazy right now,” Vettel, who despite his young age would count himself among F1′s currently perplexed purists, told Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. “What’s happening is difficult for us to explain,” he added. The situation has split the F1 audience, with the purists shaking their heads, and others marvelling at the unprecedented spectacle. “The spectacle has taken over the sport,” said the Paris daily Le Figaro. “Even the teams can’t be sure who will be the hare and who will be the tortoise at any given track,” wrote Hockley. Alonso, who is the joint championship leader, is in the purists’ camp. “Of course it is attractive for the spectators that we are going to Monaco not knowing if we will fight for victory or be left out of the points,” he is quoted by El Pais. “But in a way, after eleven years in formula one and now I’m at Ferrari, I would like to have more stability,” the Spaniard admitted. Sir Jackie Stewart said: “What’s going on is unbelievable, which I think is the outcome of the new rules, new tyres — I think it’s many factors,” he told the Spanish sports daily AS. “What’s happening,” said Maldonado’s race engineer Xevi Pujolar, “is that these tyres are allowing teams who do not have the biggest budgets to be eligible for really good results. “The reason is that the most important thing now is to have a good setup and also some luck with the temperature.” Pirelli, F1′s tyre maker, has received both criticism and praise for its huge role. “Pirelli have been both bold and brave,” Sun journalist Hockley said. “It can’t be easy for a manufacturer to make tyres that sometimes wear out faster than you can say Mercedes.” Marco Tronchetti Provera, the Italian marque’s company chief, is unapologetic. “What we have provided is what the teams have asked for, and it was not easy,” Italian language reports quote him saying. “Our engineers have done an extraordinary thing.” |

Season of confusion to continue on Sunday(0) F1′s season of confusion looks set to continue, with an uncertain weather forecast only adding to the uncertainty ahead of the Spanish grand prix. The bizarre 2012 contest stepped into yet another gear on Saturday, with events unfolding to put the previously-derided pay driver Pastor Maldonado on pole, alongside the crisis-ridden Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. And the Pirelli tyre predicament, worsened on the challenging Circuit de Catalunya layout and under hot Spanish skies, will continue to confound teams on Sunday, with temperatures set to drop and rain clouds predicted to gather. “I am telling you now, honestly,” said Red Bull’s Mark Webber. “We don’t have even the slightest idea who will benefit when it gets colder.” The German magazine Auto Motor und Sport laid out the fascinating if bewildering situation as of Saturday in Spain: “Sebastian Vettel doesn’t know why his car suddenly lost grip in qualifying. “Jenson Button has no idea why he couldn’t generate any tyre temperature on the 40 degrees track. Williams don’t know why Pastor Maldonado clocked the second fastest lap. “Mercedes’ engineers had to admit they still don’t understand the Pirelli rubber.” Acting team principal Bob Bell smiled tortuously: “If we did understand, we’d be on pole. But even Pirelli don’t know all the answers.” Writing in O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper, Livio Oricchio estimated there are up to 12 candidates for victory. “A grid of madness!” said former F1 driver Patrick Tambay on France’s RMC Sport. “And it’s not over yet.” So, is Michael Schumacher – having sat out Q3 in order to save tyres for the race – now even more critical of Pirelli? “I’ll leave it with what has already been said,” he insisted late on Saturday. |

Vettel: Ferrari ‘dangerous’ with new B car(0) Ferrari’s heavily upgraded F2012 has caught the eye of reigning world champion and last-start winner Sebastian Vettel. The famous Italian team and its lead driver Fernando Alonso have tried to play down the improvements made to the recently struggling red car. “It was good acting,” said Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo’s correspondent Livio Oricchio on Friday. “The truth is that Ferrari have debuted a new car. Almost everything is different.” Red Bull’s Vettel has spotted the same thing. “If you ask me, Ferrari are dangerous,” Bild newspaper quotes the German as saying on Friday. The ‘B’ Ferrari features new front and rear wings, floor, sidepods, engine cover, exhaust and brake ducts. “A total reconstruction for a million euros,” said the newspaper. Alonso was quickest on Friday morning in Barcelona but then a long way down the order in P2. He played down his victory chances. But Vettel’s boss Dr Helmut Marko insists: “They (Ferrari) have become really fast.” |

Massa: Upgrade last chance for F2012 project(0) Felipe Massa has hinted that Ferrari should consider moving on if major improvements to the F2012 do not push the team forwards this weekend. The Maranello based team played down the extent of the upgrade seen in Barcelona on Friday, but one media pundit surmised that “almost everything is different” compared with the car in Bahrain three weeks ago. It might, therefore, be seen as a last roll of the dice for Ferrari, who could therefore be advised to turn attention to the 2013 project should the upgrades not work as expected. But when that was put to Fernando Alonso in Barcelona, the Spaniard answered: “I don’t think so. I don’t think so.” Brazilian Massa doesn’t agree. “If you have a car, you introduce a number of significant changes and you don’t get the response you expected, it means that the project is not good,” he is quoted by Brazil’s O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper. “You would have to leave it in order to create a new base,” added Massa. But Alonso doesn’t agree with his teammate’s final point, either. When asked if the disappointing F2012 could nonetheless be used as the basis of Ferrari’s 2013 project, he insisted: “I think so. Yes.” |

Brawn’s Barcelona absence triggers rumours(0) A lack of official information has triggered speculation about Ross Brawn’s health. And another rumour is that his absence in Barcelona could be connected with Mercedes’ billion-dollar dispute with Bernie Ecclestone over the next Concorde Agreement. The German squad announced on Thursday that Bob Bell is leading the team in Barcelona because regular boss Brawn is back in Britain on doctor’s orders. Bild newspaper said the 57-year-old was given the advice in hospital earlier this week, following a dizzy spell at his home in England. “It’s more than the flu,” chief executive Nick Fry is quoted as saying, “but I can assure you that it’s nothing life threatening.” Indeed, a spokeswoman told us on Thursday that Brawn will be back to work at Monaco in a fortnight. For Spain, Brawn will watch the action on television. “We will still keep in touch,” Michael Schumacher revealed. “Ross cannot be replaced. That’s simply impossible.” |

Barrichello reveals Ferrari ‘threat’ of 2002(0) Rubens Barrichello has alleged that Ferrari made a threat that might have ended his motor racing career during the infamous 2002 Austrian grand prix. Ten years ago, the Brazilian led the race at the A1-Ring but eventually, at the very last corner, succumbed to team orders that allowed number one teammate Michael Schumacher to pass him. Subsequent video footage has depicted then Ferrari team boss Jean Todt asking Barrichello on the radio to simply “let Michael pass for the championship, please”. But Barrichello, having left F1 at the end of 2011 for a seat in Indycar, says it was not quite as simple as that. “It was eight laps of war,” he is quoted by Brazil’s Globo. “It’s very rare that I lose my temper, but I was screaming on the radio. I kept going right to the end, saying I would not let him pass. “That’s when they said something about something much broader. It was not about the contract. “I cannot tell you what they said, but it was a form of threat that made me think about re-thinking my life, because the great joy for me was driving,” said the 39-year-old. |

Grosjean admits he ‘didn’t race’ Raikkonen(0) Romain Grosjean has admitted he didn’t try to keep his teammate Kimi Raikkonen behind him at the recent Bahrain grand prix. In the wake of Lotus’ podium breakthrough, it was suggested Frenchman Grosjean was the victim of team orders. Team figures, including boss Eric Boullier and 2007 world champion Raikkonen who finished the race second ahead of rookie Grosjean, denied the charge, even though team orders are fully legal. But it emerged this week that, just before Grosjean was passed by Raikkonen, the French driver was told on the radio: “Kimi is faster than you. “Do not hold him up,” the radio message, broadcasted for the first time by F1′s official website this week, ended. Onboard footage of the move also showed Raikkonen briefly waving to his teammate as he completed the easy pass, ostensibly to thank him. “I think that if I had closed the door on Kimi, or if we had fought, then I could have lost a wing,” Grosjean said this week. “We knew that we could have a podium as a result and I didn’t want to make a mistake. I didn’t race at my best level,” he admitted to RMC. |

The Finnish broadcaster MTV3 reports that the Frenchman was told that his teammate “Kimi (Raikkonen) is faster than you”. “Do not hold him up,” the radio message reportedly ended. In 2010, when team orders were still illegal, Felipe Massa was famously told “Fernando (Alonso) is faster than you” shortly before the Brazilian gave up the lead of the race to Alonso. Ferrari was fined $100,000. Today, team orders are allowed, but Lotus denied it instructed Grosjean to let 2007 world champion Raikkonen pass before the Finn finished second in Bahrain. “We don’t want to play team orders,” Lotus team principal Eric Boullier insisted in Bahrain, “so we let them race normally and what happened, happened.” |

Force India sat out practice to save money(0) Another theory about Force India’s absence from a practice session in Bahrain last weekend has emerged. Word has it the Silverstone based team sat out the second session on Friday because staff were spooked by a Molotov cocktail incident and didn’t want to be returning to their hotels in darkness. Officially, Force India said the decision to skip a practice session was for “logistical reasons”. “None of the other teams seem to have a problem,” said Bernie Ecclestone last weekend. “Maybe (it’s) nothing to do with being in this country, maybe it’s something else.” An event summary by Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport said: “There are rumours that Force India wanted to save its engines because they are short on cash.” The team’s Bahrain crisis was handled by deputy chief Bob Fernley, in the absence of owner and principal Vijay Mallya. Indeed, Indian Mallya does seem to have bigger problems, with the latest reports indicating he is considering selling 26 per cent of his flagship spirits company in order to rescue his dying airline Kingfisher. A spokesman for JM Financial, representing Mallya, dismissed the suggestion as “factually incorrect and speculative”. |

HRT only team to miss Mugello test(0) HRT has announced it will sit out next week’s rare in-season formula one test at Mugello. For the first time in years, the sport has relaxed slightly its strict testing ban in order to give teams the chance to run between grands prix. The three-day session at Ferrari’s Italian circuit will begin next Tuesday, during the three-week gap between Bahrain and Spain. Struggling backmarkers HRT, however, will not be there, opting instead to be “completely focused” on relocating to its new Caja Magica headquarters in Madrid. Every other team will be at Mugello, 30 kilometres from Florence — the first in-season test for four years. 26 drivers will be in action, as will a lot of update packages following F1′s return from the hectic ‘flyaway’ season. Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes, Sauber, Marussia and Toro Rosso will use their regular race drivers. Running regular racers and a tester will be Lotus (Jerome d’Ambrosio), Williams (Valtteri Bottas) and Force India (Jules Bianchi). Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport said Caterham is “using the opportunity to earn some money” by accepting the sponsorship of the Venezuelan Rodolfo Gonzalez. McLaren has scheduled to run its testers Oliver Turvey and Gary Paffett, although Lewis Hamilton has indicated he might gatecrash the programme in order to help solve the MP4-27′s newfound tyre problems. |

Leme: Massa ‘good’ driver in ‘very bad’ Ferrari(0) Well-known Brazilian commentator Reginaldo Leme has defended Felipe Massa, amid the Ferrari driver’s career crisis. Massa’s Ferrari seat hangs in the balance, and according to his boss Stefano Domenicali, he will have to improve in order to simply stay on the F1 grid with any team next year. But Leme has pointed the finger of blame at Ferrari’s struggling F2012 car. “It is very difficult to give an explanation for any driver’s bad phase,” Leme acknowledged on the Redacao Sportv programme. “The car is very bad. The fact that Alonso is always scoring (points) just shows that the Spaniard is the best driver of this generation. “No other driver, however good, could get anything out of that car. “I think that’s what’s happening with Massa,” said Leme. Massa will drive Ferrari’s heavily updated Barcelona-spec car at the Mugello test next Wednesday, while Alonso will drive on Tuesday and Thursday. Turning his attention to the 2012 championship, meanwhile, Reginaldo Leme said consistency is more important than ever before, with four separate teams having won races so far. “Look at Webber — he has been fourth four times and is third in the championship. Hamilton has been third three times and is right in contention.” |

Alesi urges Grosjean hype to stopComments Off Jean Alesi would like to see the pressure eased on the shoulders of France’s new F1 hope. Until Sunday, Alesi was the last French driver to have stood on a formula one podium, after taking his Sauber to third at Spa in 1998. Romain Grosjean therefore ended a 14-year podium drought for France, tasting top-three spoils in just his eleventh race in formula one. “(Grosjean as) My successor?” Alesi told RMC Sport. “I don’t see it that way. “It’s promising but we need to leave him alone now,” the 47-year-old veteran of 202 grands prix over 13 seasons insisted. Alesi is referring to the media hype about Grosjean after the first two races, when he failed to get his Lotus around even the first lap in Australia and Malaysia. He then scored his first ever points in China and seven days later was on the podium, triggering press speculation in France that the tones of ‘La Marseillaise’ are next. But there remains other pressures on Grosjean; exalted as France’s new hope, and at the same time accused of preventing Kimi Raikkonen from winning in Bahrain by not letting his faster teammate through in the absence of team orders. “I know what I’m talking about,” said Alesi. “Since the beginning of the season there have been all sorts of comments about him. “That isn’t right. “He needs to have calm and take the time that he needs to get on top of everything. “When it’s a podium, we’re all happy but when it’s a bad performance, we all have to be behind him too,” he added. |
