New winner Maldonado looks for Monaco repeat(0) The oddest element of the 2012 season so far is that the unlikeliest of candidates could now be genuine title contenders. Before the Spanish grand prix weekend, Pastor Maldonado was a commonly derided ‘pay driver’ with 500-1 odds of winning in Barcelona, and just a single point to his name in 2011. Now, he is F1′s newest pole-getter and race victor, and genuinely regarded as a potential contender for the world championship. And Dr Helmut Marko, the reigning world champion Red Bull’s motor racing manager, said: “If the Williams really has traction that good, then Maldonado will run rings around everyone in Monte Carlo,” he is quoted by Auto Motor und Sport. Maldonado travelled straight from Spain to Caracus, where he was being quizzed by the local media as to his chances of a back-to-back victory repeat in Monaco next weekend. “I think it’s going to be a great opportunity for us to be strong again,” he said. |

Vettel shrugs at F1′s ‘crazy’ pecking order(0) Five races in, F1′s cleverest brains are still yet to decode the mystery of the bizarre and fascinating 2012 season. As was the case when he utterly dominated last year, Sebastian Vettel is still leading the drivers’ points chase. But, before last weekend, if he had been told that Williams’ Pastor Maldonado would be the winner of the Spanish grand prix, the German admitted: “Well, I would have put a lot of money on them! “I think the odds weren’t bad,” he smiled. Indeed, the major British bookmaker William Hill was taking bets at 500-1 prior to the Barcelona weekend. A spokesman confirmed that only two bets at 10 pounds or above were placed on Maldonado prior to qualifying. “I’m sure Williams don’t understand why they just won the race here,” McLaren’s Jenson Button is quoted by the Guardian newspaper. But the previously-derided ‘pay driver’ Maldonado is not the only potential new winner in 2012, after Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg and Vettel won the opening four grands prix. A detailed look at F1′s specialist reporting in the past few weeks shows that Lewis Hamilton, Mark Webber, Kimi Raikkonen, Romain Grosjean, Michael Schumacher, Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi are all also widely regarded as genuine victory candidates in 2012. And given that their teammates have won grands prix this season, even the struggling Felipe Massa and Bruno Senna should be added to that list. “Dammit, let’s go for (HRT’s) Karthikeyan!” wrote Chris Hockley in the Sun newspaper. “It’s really quite crazy right now,” Vettel, who despite his young age would count himself among F1′s currently perplexed purists, told Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. “What’s happening is difficult for us to explain,” he added. The situation has split the F1 audience, with the purists shaking their heads, and others marvelling at the unprecedented spectacle. “The spectacle has taken over the sport,” said the Paris daily Le Figaro. “Even the teams can’t be sure who will be the hare and who will be the tortoise at any given track,” wrote Hockley. Alonso, who is the joint championship leader, is in the purists’ camp. “Of course it is attractive for the spectators that we are going to Monaco not knowing if we will fight for victory or be left out of the points,” he is quoted by El Pais. “But in a way, after eleven years in formula one and now I’m at Ferrari, I would like to have more stability,” the Spaniard admitted. Sir Jackie Stewart said: “What’s going on is unbelievable, which I think is the outcome of the new rules, new tyres — I think it’s many factors,” he told the Spanish sports daily AS. “What’s happening,” said Maldonado’s race engineer Xevi Pujolar, “is that these tyres are allowing teams who do not have the biggest budgets to be eligible for really good results. “The reason is that the most important thing now is to have a good setup and also some luck with the temperature.” Pirelli, F1′s tyre maker, has received both criticism and praise for its huge role. “Pirelli have been both bold and brave,” Sun journalist Hockley said. “It can’t be easy for a manufacturer to make tyres that sometimes wear out faster than you can say Mercedes.” Marco Tronchetti Provera, the Italian marque’s company chief, is unapologetic. “What we have provided is what the teams have asked for, and it was not easy,” Italian language reports quote him saying. “Our engineers have done an extraordinary thing.” |

Webber plays down impact of team orders ‘return’Comments Off Mark Webber has played down the likely impact of F1′s lifting of the ban on team orders. “People shouldn’t get too nervous about it. They’re not going to see it every weekend,” said the Australian. Webber was an advocate of a team strategy in Red Bull’s recent championship campaign, arguing that the 2002 ban did not stop orders from being imposed in F1. The FIA has decided to lift the ban for 2011 after Ferrari’s team strategy at Hockenheim this year showed that enforcement is difficult and controversial. “I think the Ferrari one was pretty brutal and that’s as bad as it gets,” Webber said on Tuesday on BBC radio. But as for team orders ‘returning’ next year, he laughed: “Yeah, like they ever went! “When you’ve got two drivers driving for a team and you can swing the results around every now and again to help the team achieve a better result … it has been done in the past, it’s been done up and down the field. “I’ve done it myself at times. I’ve been on the receiving end of it and done it as well in teams I’ve driven for in the past,” revealed Webber, 34. His comments are at odds with the policy of strict driver equality at Red Bull, but Webber insists that his spats were never so serious in 2010 as to cause him to think about leaving. “I knew as a team we could go through growing pains this year and go forward from it,” said Webber. “So it never went through my mind that I needed to go somewhere else.” During the interview, however, Webber did admit that most F1 drivers secretly covet a Ferrari seat. “I will take each year as it comes,” he said. “Contract time always comes around and you’re either wanted or you’re not. Let’s see what happens in 2012. “I still need to want to do it. What’s really important is that you finish on top of your game. I don’t want to be beaten by some guys who I don’t think should (beat me).” |

Red Bull must keep delivering or lose VettelComments Off Red Bull will have to keep delivering a top car to Sebastian Vettel, team owner Dietrich Mateschitz has admitted. The 23-year-old, groomed through the ranks by the energy drinks company, became F1′s youngest ever world champion against the odds in Abu Dhabi on Sunday. “He will be a world champion a few times more,” said Austrian billionaire Mateschitz on Austrian television ORG, “provided he is sitting in the right car. “We will do our best to give that car to him,” he added. “If we are not able to, we will have to let him go somewhere where he can be champion again,” said Mateschitz. Vettel’s current contract runs only to the end of next year, with an option for 2012, but Red Bull has expressed interest in extending the deal through 2015. His next agreement will be worth much more money, Willi Weber has warned. But he thinks Vettel has missed out on F1′s headiest days of driver earning power. “I have a feeling that Michael (Schumacher) and I had the best time in F1, with which you can no longer compare,” the famous driver manager told SID news agency. “Today there is less money available,” added Weber. |

Alonso not expecting to win title in BrazilComments Off Fernando Alonso is not ready to relax despite leaping into a strong points position with just two races left to run in 2010. But McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh, whose drivers are also still mathematically in the hunt, said: “There is little doubt now the championship decider is going to be in Abu Dhabi.” Alonso agrees that he cannot rely on another Korea-like outcome before then. “Red Bull showed us again in Korea that they are stronger than us, and that will be the same in Brazil and Abu Dhabi as well,” the Ferrari driver told El Pais newspaper. “So what we need is another small step forward to be competitive. We must be on the podium. If someone beats us now, congratulations — winning or losing will depend on who is faster, on reliability and on luck,” added the 29-year-old. In comments published by Italy’s La Stampa, Alonso said he is not interested in the mathematical possibility of him becoming champion in Brazil. “Yes, that’s true — and if Red Bull miss their plane to Brazil, that’s another way to be champion,” he joked. “The odds remain in favour of Red Bull.” Alonso said the only mathematical certainty is that he cannot lose the championship at Interlagos in two weeks. “In Korea I have only guaranteed to be fighting in Abu Dhabi in the last race of the season,” he confirmed. |

Brawn admits days numbered if 2011 car also badComments Off Ross Brawn has admitted his days as Mercedes team boss are numbered if he cannot power the German marque’s name to the top of formula one. With the Brackley based team failing to live up to its billing as the reigning world champions with Michael Schumacher in the starring role, there have been widespread rumours about team harmony falling apart. Brawn insists Schumacher is staying put and denies he is at odds with the German manager Norbert Haug, but acknowledges that he needs to deliver a much better silver car for 2011. “Fourth position in the championship – and forget 2008 because that was the year I came to Honda and I couldn’t do anything about that – is probably the worst result I have had since I have been in senior management,” he told the Telegraph. “And if the team continues running at a mediocre level then I probably won’t be running a team for much longer. But the important thing is that I believe I know where we have gone wrong,” added Brawn. He has explained this year’s problems as due to fighting in 2009 for the team’s survival as Brawn GP last year, whilst also pushing Jenson Button to the title. “This business is all about spinning plates on the end of sticks. And if you stop spinning them they fall off. A few of our plates fell off last year. Now we have put them back and we are spinning them,” he said. Team figures are not hiding the fact that a major restructuring is about to take place, with one example being the rumoured drafting-in of Nico Rosberg’s former Williams engineer Tony Ross. “My lips are sealed,” the German driver, who is currently engineered by Jock Clear, is quoted by Turun Sanomat newspaper. “Anyway, we are moving in the right direction and nobody is being kicked out,” Rosberg insisted. |

Domenicali: Rival teams’ title approach ‘interesting’Comments Off Stefano Domenicali has admitted it will be “interesting” to see how Ferrari’s rivals tackle the remaining three races of 2010. Of the title contenders, only the Italian team is solely focused on a single driver, while Red Bull and McLaren still endeavour to provide equality to each of their race drivers. “In the other two teams they have both drivers that will fight (each other),” said team boss Domenicali, contrasting Felipe Massa’s role for the rest of the season in support of Fernando Alonso’s title challenge. “I think it will be very important to see how all the drivers approach the next few races mentally, within the teams and against the other drivers — it will be very interesting,” he added. The most obvious negative example of a team’s commitment to equality is 2007, when McLaren’s acrimonious duo Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso tied on points but both lost the championship against the odds to Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen. Flavio Briatore, who is Mark Webber’s manager, insists Red Bull should order the Australian’s teammate Sebastian Vettel to fall in line. “With only three races left, Red Bull should make Mark their number 1 driver,” he said in a new interview with the Times of India. He thinks team orders and the notion of number 1 drivers have an obvious place in formula one, whose biggest prize is the individual drivers’ title. “If I had been at Ferrari, I would have done the same thing,” said Briatore. |

Haug insists ‘no cracks’ in Mercedes team harmonyComments Off
Norbert Haug has once again played down rumours of discord within the Mercedes GP camp. Two weeks ago at Monza, speculation swept the Italian paddock that Michael Schumacher could follow team boss Ross Brawn out of the team at the end of 2010. The rumours, hinting that the initial indications are that Mercedes could have another difficult season in 2011, claimed that Brawn and carmaker Mercedes-Benz’s motor sport chief Haug are at odds over the direction of the Brackley based team. “We have full confidence in Ross,” Haug insisted in Singapore, according to Turun Sanomat newspaper. “Work for the future is going well,” added the German. “It is normal that rumours come and go. “I’ve heard rumours about Michael, about me and about Ross. When I say no, I mean no, and when I say yes, I mean yes. “My answer is no; there are no cracks in the relationship,” insisted Haug. He also insisted that the commitment of Mercedes-Benz and its parent Daimler is not wavering. “The automotive industry has gone through a crisis, and several other manufacturers have left F1,” said Haug. “Mercedes is committed to the future of this sport. We do not yet have a winning team, but we are putting in the work to become a winning team,” he added. |

Coulthard said no to being Ferrari no.2Comments Off David Coulthard has revealed he said no to being a Ferrari driver. Weighing in on the teammate histrionics at his former team Red Bull, the Scot said he believes the Milton Keynes based outfit treats its drivers as “an equal partnership”. He said the other option is “the Ferrari/Schumacher route, with one driver openly backed over the other”. “I once turned down the chance of a move to Ferrari as I would not accept being a signed-up number two to Michael,” Coulthard, 39, revealed in his latest column for the Daily Telegraph. He acknowledged that the Schumacher method is “the most effective” in terms of winning championships, “but morally dubious”. “The second (route) is the fairer system but incredibly volatile and difficult to put into practice,” added Coulthard. Having driven for Red Bull until the end of 2008, including two seasons as Mark Webber’s teammate, Coulthard said he believes the team when it says Sebastian Vettel is not being favoured. He is therefore not sure if Australian Webber is doing the right thing by being openly critical in the wake of the front wing saga at Silverstone. “Mark clearly feels he can gain more leverage by going public and trying to shame the team whenever he feels hard done by,” said Coulthard. “It is a risky strategy,” he added. “If it goes wrong, the relationship with the team could sour irreparably. “If it comes off, he could consolidate his position, attract public sympathy and be remembered as a steely champion who battled against the odds to win his title.” |

Red Bull must move on as McLaren looks to pounceComments Off After the lost tempers and the blame game, Red Bull is now moving to put its championship campaign back on track in the ten days before reconvening in Canada for the next grand prix. Turkey not only staged a crash between teammates Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel whilst leading, it triggered a hotbed of intrigue as fingers were pointed and garage divisions were revealed and strengthened. Australian Webber, now the clear championship leader but at odds with both his team and his apparently favoured teammate, indicated he wants to patch up and move on. “We’ll probably have a difference of opinion about what happened until we go to our graves, but we’re both adults and we need to find a way of racing together that doesn’t compromise the team,” he wrote in his column for the Australian newspaper Daily Telegraph. A Red Bull source told the Independent that a calm-down meeting had already been held in Turkey, but that is at odds with reports that Vettel left the circuit early. “We had a detailed meeting and everyone had their say. There was no way that feelings were going to be allowed to fester. The matter is now all talked through,” said the unnamed source. Speaking to Finland’s Turun Sanomat newspaper, former McLaren driver David Coulthard warned of the dangers of an internal conflict. “It is a fact that within a racing team, it’s the worst possible scenario,” the Scot said, recalling his collision with Mika Hakkinen in Austria in 1999, where afterwards the Finn “did not want to talk to me”. But “You need to sort out these messes before the next race, otherwise it just continues to be a distraction,” said Coulthard. “The team’s task is to get the drivers to talk it through.” At the same time, Red Bull’s nearest title rival McLaren is attempting to use the saga to its advantage. “If they don’t kiss and make up it means they won’t be sharing information as much at the next race,” said Jenson Button. Offering advice to the warring Red Bulls, he added: “It’s about owning up and moving forward. If they can’t do that, it will play into our hands.” And Lewis Hamilton took a dig at Webber and Vettel by pointing out that he and Button did not collide when they similarly diced for position in Turkey. “That’s why we are world champions. I am proud to have him (Button) as my teammate,” said the Briton. (GMM) |

HRT eyes Toyota’s Cologne HQ and TF110 car – reportsComments Off HRT is interested in moving into Toyota’s F1 headquarters in Cologne, and is also eyeing the departed Japanese teams’ 2010 car, according to reports. Spain’s sports newspaper Marca said the Spanish team’s owner Jose Ramon Carabante has already visited the German site on two occasions. Italiaracing, meanwhile, reports that the Hispania team is also interested in taking over Toyota’s unraced 2010 chassis, the TF110. The news follows HRT’s confirmation that it has split with its existing chassis maker Dallara. But the move to buy the Cologne facility would be at odds with HRT’s earlier plans to set up a long-term base in the Spanish region of Murcia, a team sponsor. The reports could therefore trigger speculation that Carabante is looking to sell the team, even though on Thursday HRT revealed the identity of its new board. “This shows how (the team) is strongly trying to keep on growing day by day in order to develop to a more strong, lasting and competitive team in formula one,” read a statement. Few would have predicted a Jenson Button win on Chinese Grand PrixComments Off Well that’s how it panned out as the reigning F1 World Champion delivered a well judged and much deserved drive to notch up his second victory of the season. Prior to the start of the Chinese Grand Prix, at Shanghai International Circuit, few would have predicted a Jenson Button win, fewer would have waged odds on a McLaren 1-2. The race under heavy Shanghai skies had everything: a dry spell, a semi-wet phase, wet with rain fall, first lap mayhem, a jump start and generous doses of overtaking. It was by no means plain sailing (excuse the pun) for Button who took the lead on lap 19 and controlled the race from that point on, well almost, as in the final laps he faced a relentless challenge from team mate Lewis Hamilton who again was the star of the show with a gritty drive to second place. Nico Rosberg, again showed impressively, bringing his Mercedes GP home third making it an all Merc powered driver podium. Rosberg flew the flag for the Silver Arrows as his illustrious team mate Michael Schumacher could only manage 10th place in an afternoon in some high profile battles which alas saw him come out second best in just about all of them. Twice he was overtaken with remarkable ease by Hamilton, Vettel and Webber, lost a battle with a rookie late in the race and was taken by a Ferrari on the very last lap which relegated him to tenth. Fernando Alonso brought his Ferrari home in fourth, which was an impressive feat considering that the Spaniard was given a drive through penalty for jumping the start. It was marginal but replays showed the scarlet car edging forward before the lights went off. Hence he led briefly from the start. Team mate Felipe Massa was nowhere near Alonso’s pace all weekend and scrapped his way to ninth, well and truly overshadowed. Renault again were impressive with Robert Kubica taking fifth place in yet another strong drive for the team and crowning a good day with rookie Vitaly Petrov having an action packed day with a number of excursions, but also a number of duels with some big names and seventh place was a just reward for the Russian who clearly revels adverse conditions. Sebastian Vettel who started on pole in his Red Bull will be wondering where it all went wrong. A win in conditions that he thrives in was almost a foregone conclusion prior to the start. But it was not to be and sixth is scant reward for a race that somehow escaped the team. Mark Webber who shared the front row defied his experience with some silly mistakes which saw him come home eighth. There will be few smiles in their garages. YF1 |
