Ferrari say Massa contender for 2013 race seat(0) Ferrari has played down rumours it is close to immediately ousting Felipe Massa, insisting it is possible the struggling Brazilian will still be in a red car next year. On Twitter, the famous Italian team said the latest rumours – including a claim that former Virgin driver Jerome d’Ambrosio is a candidate to replace Massa in 2012 – are “funny”. But it was Ferrari itself who fuelled the speculation, publishing a statement on its website that read like a warning to Massa. “It was a very carefully-worded statement, wasn’t it?” said Telegraph correspondent Tom Cary. “The way this crazy season is going, I really would not be massively shocked if they ditched him mid-season.” The Swiss newspaper Blick said Monaco next weekend could be the 30-year-old’s last chance to up his game. And the candidates are lining up. “Ferrari knows that I’m ready. If they need me or they want me, then they will call me,” Adrian Sutil, who accompanied his manager to last weekend’s Spanish grand prix, said. The Spanish newspaper El Mundo said some paddock pundits believe “the only reason” Massa still has its seat is because the “name Todt” – a reference not only to Massa’s manager Nicolas but to the FIA president – has a “protective arm” around him. Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni told Brazil’s O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper this week: “Felipe has the full confidence of the team, starting with our president. “We have not decided who will be our driver in 2013 but Felipe is not ruled out,” he insisted. Indeed, while some believe Ferrari has hung a sword of Damocles above Massa’s head, others think the Maranello based team have been patient since the Paulista’s recovery from his near-fatal head injuries of 2009. “We have no evidence that makes us think that Felipe has slowed down because of the accident. Zero,” Colajanni said. F1 doctor Gary Hartstein agreed: “An experience like that (Hungary 2009) changes you, but you can’t say that’s why Felipe has not won again.” |

Ecclestone quotes high price to Magny Cours(0) Magny Cours is still in the race to host France’s return to formula one. But according to RMC, the race’s former host – having run the French grand prix between 1991 and 2008 – has been handed a much higher price-tag than Paul Ricard. Just before Nicolas Sarkozy lost the recent presidential election, the basis of an agreement to annually alternate a French GP with Belgium’s Spa Francorchamps was agreed. The 2013 host would be Paul Ricard, the Bernie Ecclestone-owned circuit, and the race fee EUR 22 million. Politics, it seems, have intervened. Francois Hollande, France’s new president, is not a supporter of the grand prix, and vowed to re-evaluate the sport’s return to the country. RMC reports that officials at Magny Cours have used the opportunity to “repeatedly” contact F1 chief executive Ecclestone in recent days. The Nievre region is politically aligned with the new administration, but Ecclestone is reportedly “asking EUR 10 million more” for a race at Magny Cours. Politics, however, could also be on Paul Ricard’s side, with Citroen’s former world rally boss Olivier Quesnel reportedly lined up to lead the F1 project. Quesnel is reportedly close to FIA president Jean Todt, and the pair apparently met earlier this week. |

Sponsors nervous as F1 ploughs on with BahrainComments Off High-profile sponsors are nervous, as formula one ploughs ahead with next week’s Bahrain grand prix. Despite widespread trepidation felt within the paddock this weekend in Shanghai, the FIA has declared that there is no reason the Sakhir event cannot go ahead. And after meeting with the teams on Friday, Bernie Ecclestone told reporters the race is “200 per cent” on. But The Times reports that, amid the threat of violence, some sponsors have pulled the plug on providing hospitality for guests next weekend. “When you have an environment like Bahrain then all the sponsors will be watching developments very, very closely and talking to each other,” a source said. “It’s a case of ‘watch this space’ basically.” However, the British newspaper said it is unlikely any major sponsors will pull their logos from the cars. “(They) will effectively just have to follow the sport,” said Tim Bampton, of the motor sports marketing company Just Marketing. “They will have to watch and wait to see what happens even though they could be caught in the vortex.” But, at the same time, it is believed that sponsors’ contracts with the teams – such as Vodafone’s estimated $75m deal with McLaren – contain “brand damage” clauses. An added complication for McLaren is that it is part owned by Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund, with Mumtalakat Holdings “on course to own half the business” according to writer Kevin Eason. Also under heavy scrutiny is the conspicuously silent FIA president Jean Todt, whose son Nicolas shares ownership of his GP2 team with Bahrain’s controversial crown prince. “We all know why it (the Bahrain saga) might have dragged a bit,” Mark Webber is quoted by the Telegraph. “F1 is like that. There’s a lot of funding and finances that have come from Abu Dhabi and Bahrain and the Middle East. “They’re very excited about F1 and they clearly want to give it another go. Let’s see if it works,” added the Red Bull driver. |

2013 France GP comeback weeks from collapseComments Off The race to put the French grand prix back on track will be over in three weeks. France has been missing from the calendar since Magny-Cours last held a grand prix in 2008, but efforts have been made to annually alternate a race between Paul Ricard – a track in Le Castellet, near Marseille – and Belgium’s fabled Spa Francorchamps. Deschaux told RMC the project needs to reach the finish-line within three weeks. “We have always been working very hard,” he said. “We have arrived in the home stretch, where either we come to finalise within three weeks, or we will go on a path that forces us to postpone.” |

Bianchi’s sponsor signs up with Force India(1) Jules Bianchi’s personal sponsor has signed up with the Force India team for 2012. Without mentioning 22-year-old Bianchi’s name, the Silverstone based team announced this week that Brazilian car parts maker Aethra is a new sponsor. Aethra was Bianchi’s main sponsor in GP2 last season, when he finished the feeder series in third place behind champion Romain Grosjean and Luca Filippi. “Particularly after a bad start, it is unfortunate that 2011 did not go as we wanted for Bianchi in GP2,” his manager Nicolas Todt told Italy’s Autosprint magazine last week. “It was therefore impossible for him to win the title and so similarly (impossible) to find him a formula one race seat with a good team.” |

Force India reserve Bianchi to race Formula RenaultComments Off Jules Bianchi will split his time between the F1 and Formula Renault paddocks in 2012. Like Hulkenberg last year, Frenchman Bianchi will practice on numerous Friday mornings in 2012. He will also race in the Formula Renault 3.5 series, it emerged on Thursday. Bianchi, also under contract to Ferrari as a development driver and managed by Felipe Massa’s manager Nicolas Todt, will drive for the Tech 1 team. “This is a very important season for my career and, as a young driver, it is vital to have the opportunity to race in a competitive series such as this,” he said. “I want to thank Ferrari and Force India for having given permission to grasp this opportunity.” |

GP2 team ART withdraws bid for 2011 F1 debutComments Off The French GP2 outfit ART Grand Prix has withdrawn its application to complete the formula one grid in 2011. In a statement, the team said it worked on the project for “several months” and had “forged strong bonds with several technical and financial partners”. “But with unfavourable economic conditions (the team) could not gather the necessary guarantees to ensure the stability of the project in the long term,” said ART. The team said it has postponed the project to “a later date” and “remains completely focused and dedicated” on its other activities. Headed by Nicolas Todt, the son of FIA president Jean Todt and manager of the Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, ART also races in the F3 Euroseries and GP3. |

Cosworth denies Williams set for Renault engine switchComments Off Cosworth has played down reports Williams is set to switch to Renault engine power in 2011. It has been suggested that Grove based Williams is unhappy with the performance of the 2.4 litre V8, especially its degradation as it ages. But Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reports that the British independent engine maker, also the supplier to the three new teams, has commenced a programme to improve the deficiencies. And Cosworth’s business director Mark Gallagher said: “We have a three year contract with Williams, and there is no evidence they want to end this relationship.” He also said all of the candidates to be F1′s 13th team in 2011 “with one exception” have been in talks with Cosworth. Auto Motor und Sport reports that Cosworth is the cheapest engine supplier on the grid, with its engine costing EUR 5.5 million per year compared to the 9m price-tag for Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault power. The publication said Nicolas Todt’s hopeful ART team wants to be powered by Ferrari. But Gallagher insists that Cosworth provides a highly reliable product, while the input of Rubens Barrichello has helped the marque to improve the engine’s driveability. As for the loss of horse power in the middle of the engine’s life, Gallagher revealed: “We have found the cause and brought a solution to the FIA for permission to make the change.” (GMM) |

Hopeful teams facing August delay for 2011 decisionComments Off Jun.17 (GMM) Hopeful teams are facing a delay in the FIA’s decision about the final place on the 2011 formula one grid. That is the claim of Joan Villadelprat, whose Spanish outfit Epsilon Euskadi as well as Nicolas Todt’s ART are considered the two favourites for the 13th team entry. The FIA’s expression of interest process ended in April, with teams then lodging full applications and a fee by the end of June followed by “due diligence leading to a decision in July”. But Villadelprat has now indicated that a delay is likely. “I am optimistic about our chances,” he is quoted by Italy’s Autosprint, “but worried that the FIA will make a decision probably in August.” “That gives the team an extremely short preparation time. “It is therefore unavoidable at this stage to invest in the 2011 project without knowing whether we will be on the grid.” Villadelprat said he is targeting a start-up budget of EUR 100 million, which is substantially more than the amount being spent this year by any of the three new teams. “With a lower budget we would only make up the numbers,” he said. |

One thing is certain: Our approach is long term. The budget must from the outset for at least two seasons to be sure. As a Formula 1 team you can not think from year to year. ” With interest Villadelprat pursued the development of three new teams, Lotus, Virgin and HRT. In particular, the team of Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi’s view of the Spaniard is underfunded. have “I think if you really want to build a promising team, then you have to start at least 100 million euros. Rumour – Todt’s ART to merge with Sauber?Comments Off
French GP2 team ART could merge with an existing team rather than go it alone in formula one next year. The outfit headed by FIA president Jean Todt’s son Nicolas has applied to debut in 2011. But Spain’s El Mundo Deportivo reports that ART is also looking at other options, including merging with the under-financed former BMW-owned outfit Sauber. The move would make Spanish hopeful Epsilon Euskadi, already with a state of the art headquarters, wind tunnel and proven Le Mans car-making abilities, the favourite to fill the 13th team slot next year. “I think we have arguments that are difficult to refute,” said Epsilon’s Joan Villadelprat. On the other hand, El Mundo said Peter Sauber’s ambition for his struggling Hinwil based squad is to “find a strong and stable partner and again retreat into the background”. |

Massa’s manager in talks with other teamsComments Off Serious talks about the extension of Felipe Massa’s Ferrari contract have begun, according to Finland’s Turun Sanomat. But the newspaper also reports that Brazilian Massa’s manager Nicolas Todt has held exploratory talks with other formula one teams — perhaps Renault. Rumours have linked current Renault driver Robert Kubica as well as Red Bull’s Mark Webber with the 2011 seat alongside Fernando Alonso, with Massa’s current contract set to expire in December. The 29-year-old has also been struggling with Maranello based Ferrari’s F10 car. “We have a long contract with Alonso, and we trust Massa,” team boss Stefano Domenicali is quoted as saying. “He is doing a good job.” Massa said: “I like it very much at Ferrari — I know everybody and everybody knows me. “But it is always encouraging to know that there are others with fast cars who are interested in me. “The main objective is to continue with Ferrari,” he added. |
