Grosjean: New Lotus ‘definitely better’ than 2011 car Grosjean: New Lotus ‘definitely better’ than 2011 car(1)

Romain Grosjean is happy the early signs of his relationship with new teammate Kimi Raikkonen are positive.
Last week, the newly-acquainted pair spent time at Jerez, where their new Lotus car was the surprise standout performer of the first pre-season test.

Another “really pleasant surprise”, according to GP2 champion Grosjean, was “Kimi”.

“It took a little time and I did wonder what kind of relationship we would develop, but I think he is a really nice guy. Whatever I have asked, he has answered.”

Arguably more important, of course, is their black and gold car, and it set tongues wagging by proving the standout performer at Jerez.

“It is definitely better than our one of last year,” Frenchman Grosjean is quoted by Finnish broadcaster MTV3.

And he said both he and Raikkonen are likely to develop it in harmony.

“I did not see anything strange,” said Grosjean when asked how his and Raikkonen’s driving styles compare, “the telemetry was nearly identical.”

Also more than pleased is Lotus’ technical director, James Allison.

“The best thing about the week was the drivers’ feedback,” he said. “We had not heard anything as positive in the last couple of seasons.”

Kolles blames drivers for HRT’s 2010 letdown Kolles blames drivers for HRT’s 2010 letdownComments Off

Team boss Colin Kolles on Wednesday blamed HRT’s lack of success in 2010 on its selection of inexperienced drivers.

The Spanish team, ultimately 11th in the constructors’ championship ahead of Virgin but with the least competitive car in the field, began its debut season with the rookie pairing Bruno Senna alongside Karun Chandhok.

Brazilian Senna contested most of the season but the more experienced Sakon Yamamoto and Christian Klien also drove for HRT in 2010.

“It was a difficult year but we were the most reliable new team,” said Kolles in an interview distributed by the Spanish team.

“I think the only reason why we did not finish tenth is that teams like Lotus and Virgin had more experienced drivers during the whole season.

“I think that in testing we showed quite a good performance in relation to the other new teams,” he added.

Speculation has surrounded the future of Hispania, particularly with the split with 2011 partner Toyota leaving the team precious little time to prepare a better car.

Reports in recent days indicated a possible link with former Super Aguri technical director Mark Preston’s Formtech company, but the Australian has confirmed that he has not been in contact with HRT.

Kolles nevertheless sounds confident.

“We are working to have a better package than last year. Obviously this depends on a lot of factors but we are working to achieve our goals,” he said.

In addition to the successful GP2 team ART by Frédéric Vasseur and Nicolas Todt also Joan Villadelprat has applied again with his Epsilon-Euskadi team.

“I’m optimistic, but also a bit worried, because the FIA will publish its decision until probably the end of August,” says the former Benetton team manager in the magazine ‘Auto Sprint’. The Spaniard has claimed a good chance of being awarded. Epsilon-Euskadi has experience in prototyping, the company is as a showcase with a direct connection to the university. Sergio is ready Rinland an experienced Formula 1 designer.
“That team, which gets the award, has only very little time for the construction of Formula 1 cars,” criticized Villadelprat. “For us, this means that we now have to invest in a project that we do not even know whether we can realize it 2011.” The funding would seem to Epsilon Euskadi not be a big problem.

“We have been a very long time in intensive discussions with major international companies wishing to invest in us,” reports the team boss. “In two weeks we have accurate numbers, and then know how much money we can take control. One thing is certain: Our approach is long term. The budget must from the outset for at least two seasons to be sure. As a Formula 1 team you can not think from year to year. ”

With interest Villadelprat pursued the development of three new teams, Lotus, Virgin and HRT. In particular, the team of Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi’s view of the Spaniard is underfunded. have “I think if you really want to build a promising team, then you have to start at least 100 million euros. Sure, you can ride with 40 million €. But then, stay out of the progress every year and you may start over again .

Nico Hulkenberg: No ‘negative’ pressure from bosses Nico Hulkenberg: No ‘negative’ pressure from bossesComments Off

Nico Hulkenberg insists he is not yet under ‘negative’ pressure from his bosses to up his game in formula one.

The German rookie has outqualified Rubens Barrichello twice so far in 2010, including in Barcelona, but he has generally been outshone by his more experienced teammate.

Williams, although having groomed the reigning GP2 champion with test seats in both 2008 and 2009, is famous for not having a lot of patience for tardy or struggling drivers.

But Hulkenberg, 22, said he doesn’t feel under pressure, even though the British team’s overall performance has not been good in 2010.

“No, not at all,” he told the May print edition of Germany’s Motorsport-Magazin.

“Quite the contrary, I have the full support of Frank, Patrick and Sam.  They have not said a negative word, everything is good.

“We are in this situation together and we must come out of it together.”

But admitting he is “well prepared” for F1, Hulkenberg insists he cannot be compared with successful past rookies like Lewis Hamilton, who made his debut in 2007 with “15-20,000″ kilometres under his belt.

“I had just seven days this winter,” said Hulkenberg, who is managed by the famous Willi Weber.

“Even though I had very good results in F3 and GP3, I cannot be expected to have my teammate – who is now in his 18th season – immediately under control.

“Or if it was so, then Rubens would probably stop immediately,” he added.

Although not unduly pressured by his bosses, Hulkenberg said he is aware of the “responsibility” of occupying one of the Grove based team’s two cockpits.

“As a driver, you bear a responsibility for the whole team, for the 500 people behind it, the sponsors, all the money involved.

“It is not going quite as planned, but I am in formula one, with the best drivers in the world … give me a little time,” he said.
