Barrichello confirms Indycar move for 2012Comments Off Rubens Barrichello has finally confirmed reports he will race in America’s premier open wheeler Indycar series in 2012. AP news agency said Barrichello, a winner of 11 grands prix with Ferrari and Brawn, has signed a one-year contract with the KV team. “I’m loving the idea I’m going to be a rookie,” he said. “That makes me young, and I’m loving that,” he said. Barrichello, meanwhile, explained the apparent contradiction of heading into the Indy 500 and other similar events this year having earlier promised his wife he would never race at high speed on dangerous ovals. “What happened is we were watching an oval race and there was a crash and she looked at me and said ‘You are never going to do that, right?’ “And I told her at the time, ‘Of course not, don’t worry’.” He said he ultimately won Silvana’s backing, having initially considered skipping the five oval races. But “I wouldn’t feel comfortable sitting at home and watching someone else driving my car,” explained Barrichello. |

Di Resta cousin Franchitti has no F1 regretsComments Off Dario Franchitti insists he has no regrets despite never adding success in formula one to his list of career achievements. Last week, 38-year-old Franchitti joined his family member at the Jerez test. The four-time Indycar champion and double Indy 500 winner was asked by Sky Sports if, despite flirting with Jaguar at the beginning of last decade, he regrets not having made it to F1. “You can live your life thinking ‘I wish I’d done this, I wish I’d done that’,” he answered. “It would have been great to race in formula one at some point, but when the chances were there I didn’t take them; I didn’t feel that they were better than the opportunities I had in America.” Added Franchitti: “I made the decisions I made, I’m delighted I won a couple of Indy 500s and the four championships, so I wouldn’t change that for that world.” |

Barrichello to announce Indy future next weekComments Off Rubens Barrichello is set to decide next week whether he will switch from formula one to the Indycar series for 2012. “There is a lot going on, we have spoken with many people and there are things to be resolved, including the family aspect,” the 39-year-old told radio Bandeirantes on Tuesday. “There is great anticipation and if everything goes well I think we can make the announcement of the decision early next week,” added Barrichello. “I’m sure anyone who knows me can see in my eyes what I want. The first race is March 25 and there is no time to waste. “If we want to be in a competitive way, everything has to be right and that means sponsorship, team, family — everything.” Barrichello’s first F1 team boss, however – Eddie Jordan – has urged the likeable Brazilian to forego the Indycar opportunity. “I love Rubens — our story began when he was only 19,” the Irishman is quoted by Globo. “I love his family, his parents, and I think he should retire with dignity.” Barrichello’s contemporary David Coulthard, however, said: “I wish him luck in the United States. We had a great relationship throughout my career and I know how passionate he is about racing.” But fellow Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi warned of the dangers of American oval racing. “Today, Indy is different to when I drove — the risk is higher but it is a risk that he knows he will need to take. “Still, I think he can have fun doing what he likes,” said the former series, F1 and Indy 500 winner. |

Ecclestone: Indycar traded safety for high-risk racing(1) Bernie Ecclestone has accused Indycar of playing with drivers’ lives by organising “wrestling”-style races. “We would never have let that race take place in Las Vegas last week,” F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone told the Daily Mail. “With 34 cars racing on a 1.5-mile oval track, they were heading for disaster.” Wheldon started the race dead last and, in an Indycar season finale gimmick, he stood to share a $5 million prize with a fan if he carved through the field and won. At the time of his crash, he had already passed ten cars. “It made the race a little like all-in wrestling — with a high risk attachment,” said Ecclestone, referring to British no-holds-barred professional wrestling. “While our sympathies lie with Dan’s family, the whole episode has not been good for motor sport in general.” |

Villeneuve denies turning down Lotus F1 chanceComments Off Jacques Villeneuve has denied he threw away a good chance to return to formula one in 2011. A French Canadian radio commentator had implied that the 1997 world champion was offered the Indycar drive in Lotus colours this year and would then have progressed to F1 when the sports car marque announced its 2011 tie-up with Renault. “That was never discussed,” Villeneuve insisted, according to French language Rue Frontenac. Late last year, the 39-year-old visited Lotus’ Norfolk headquarters for talks with his friend Gino Rosato. “There was never any discussion of F1,” Villeneuve said. “Everyone knows how hard I worked on my return to F1. If the only thing I needed to do was spend a year in Indycar, I would have done it! “The truth is that F1 only came into the plans of Lotus Cars in the last few months,” he explained. Rosato, who for a long time worked in F1 with Ferrari before moving to Lotus as vice-president of corporate affairs, backed Villeneuve’s story. “F1 was not in our plans when I spoke to Jacques about Indycar,” he said. “I would have loved for him to race with us. In my head, Villeneuve and Lotus was a natural fit but the planets were not aligned.” Villeneuve agreed: “It’s true that we talked about Indycar, but Takuma Sato had already been hired as their first driver and I was asked to bring some of the budget that my partners at the time wanted to invest for F1. “It was not an option,” he clarified. “And Indycar and the Indy 500 — I’ve already done that. And that was before the separation, when the series was more competitive. “If I have to bring a budget, it will be for a new challenge like NASCAR, not to go back to something I have already ticked off and achieved,” added Villeneuve |

The 60-year-old American’s formative racing career took place in European open wheel series, but he raced in CART before switching to formula one with Tyrrell in 1983. He returned to America in 1984, winning the series in 1988 before announcing his retirement whilst recovering from a crash in 1995. |

Fittipaldi to be F1 steward in CanadaComments Off Jun.10 (GMM) Emerson Fittipaldi will be the race steward presiding alongside the three FIA officials at this weekend’s Canadian grand prix. 63-year-old Brazilian Fittipaldi won his two F1 world championships in 1972 and 1974, before winning the Indy 500 twice and becoming the Indycar title holder in 1989. In formula one, he won his first race during his rookie season for Lotus in 1970, and two years later become F1′s youngest champion at 25. In 1974 he moved to McLaren and won the title again, but then moved to his brother Wilson Fittipaldi’s team and struggled. He stopped driving in F1 at the end of 1980 at the age of 33, joining his brother in managing the team before it fell apart in late 1982. Fittipaldi switched to American CART racing in 1984, winning the title in 1989 at the age of 43. At 47 he won the Indy 500 for the second time, but an injury ended his Champ Car career in 1996 when he was 50. He was a Champ Car team owner in 2003 and recently the boss of the Brazilian A1 GP team. Fittipaldi’s nephew Christian drove in F1 for Minardi and Footwork between 1992-1994. |

Tony George eyes new venue for US GP returnComments Off Apr.24 (GMM) Tony George is interested in taking formula one back to the United States. We reported last weekend that the 50-year-old former boss of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was spotted in Shanghai for the Chinese grand prix. George met with F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone and also Zak Brown, founder and CEO of motor sport marketing firm Just Marketing who represents several high level sponsors according to the Indianapolis Business Journal (IBJ). “Would Tony George love to broker a deal to bring back a US grand prix? Sure,” said Brown. IBJ said sources confirmed that George was in China to discuss F1′s return to America and meet with potential sponsors for a race that would not necessary take place at Indianapolis. Indeed, new Indianapolis Motor Speedway boss Jeff Bulskus said George was not in China to represent the fabled Indy 500 venue, while Ecclestone has been pushing for a street race with the New York skyline. Brown said: “Tony has a lot of contacts in motor sports, and he knows how to put on a US grand prix. “I think if there’s a role for Tony in trying to bring formula one back to the US, he’d be willing to help. Tony and Bernie have a very good relationship, and Tony has a lot of interest in seeing F1 return to the US,” he added. Tony George, who still has an ownership stake in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, could not be reached for comment. |
