‘Banned for life’ Maldonado lucky to be in Monaco(0) A favourite for victory this weekend, Pastor Maldonado is reportedly lucky to be gearing up to race in the Principality at all. Bild newspaper recalls that the Venezuelan, who defied his ‘pay driver’ critics by winning for Williams in Spain two weeks ago, was actually banned after an horror incident on the streets of Monte Carlo seven years ago. Racing in the Renault World Series in 2005, the then 25-year-old ignored yellow flags before striking and severely injuring a marshal. Organisers of the Monaco grand prix reacted by banning Maldonado from the street circuit for life. Germany’s Bild revealed that Maldonado’s wealthy father intervened, promising to pay for the marshal’s recovery and rehabilitation from a broken back. That intervention saved Maldonado’s future formula one career, as no team would hire a regular driver that cannot participate in the sport’s most famous race. Maldonado is therefore a favourite for victory this weekend, with his Williams now acknowledged as arguably the best in the entire field when it comes to slow-speed traction. And in his four seasons of GP2 between 2007 and 2010, Maldonado finished on the podium each time, winning and achieving pole position twice. In 2006, he won in Formula Renault. Last year, in qualifying for his first Monaco grand prix, he qualified his then struggling Williams in eighth place, comfortably ahead of Rubens Barrichello. “He is very good at Monaco,” agreed Barrichello. In the 2011 race, Maldonado was fighting for fifth when he crashed with Lewis Hamilton. “If the last sector in Barcelona is the marker, then the Williams will be unbeatable in Monte Carlo,” Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport quotes Dr Helmut Marko as saying. The breakthrough success in Barcelona has piqued the interest of Maldonado’s native Venezuela, having not had an F1 points scorer since the ignominious Johnny Cecotto in 1983. “My country will be following every second of the next race,” Maldonado is quoted by O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper. “I love street circuits, this one in particular. My style of driving fits perfectly with Monaco. I am ready to get another great result.” |

Vettel: Ferrari ‘dangerous’ with new B car(0) Ferrari’s heavily upgraded F2012 has caught the eye of reigning world champion and last-start winner Sebastian Vettel. The famous Italian team and its lead driver Fernando Alonso have tried to play down the improvements made to the recently struggling red car. “It was good acting,” said Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo’s correspondent Livio Oricchio on Friday. “The truth is that Ferrari have debuted a new car. Almost everything is different.” Red Bull’s Vettel has spotted the same thing. “If you ask me, Ferrari are dangerous,” Bild newspaper quotes the German as saying on Friday. The ‘B’ Ferrari features new front and rear wings, floor, sidepods, engine cover, exhaust and brake ducts. “A total reconstruction for a million euros,” said the newspaper. Alonso was quickest on Friday morning in Barcelona but then a long way down the order in P2. He played down his victory chances. But Vettel’s boss Dr Helmut Marko insists: “They (Ferrari) have become really fast.” |

Alguersuari: red Bull loyalty ‘a mistake’(0) Jaime Alguersuari has concluded he made “a mistake” to remain loyal to Red Bull late last season. After testing Pirelli’s 2010 Renault car last week at Jerez, the Spaniard moved on to Barcelona to continue his work as a co-commentator for British radio. However, he revealed recently that he might have been on the 2012 grid, had he not believed Red Bull executives who told him he would be at Toro Rosso this year. “It was definitely a mistake not to negotiate with other teams,” said the Spaniard, “as I had the opportunity and declined offers,” he told Marca sports newspaper. “I did that because I had loyalty to Red Bull.” Asked if he has talked with anyone from Red Bull since his dismissal, the 22-year-old revealed: “The directors, no, the technical team, yes.” It still pains him that, in explaining their decision, the Red Bull officials like Dr Helmut Marko insisted Alguersuari was not a potential winner. “If you think that for six years they supported me then they changed their opinion overnight. One day you have a champion, the next you don’t,” he said. |

Ferrari getting ready for ‘double-DRS’(0) Ferrari might be gearing up to incorporate a ‘double-DRS’ setup aboard its improving F2012 car. If true, the famous Italian team would be the first team to successfully emulate the controversial Mercedes system, which has been declared fully legal by the governing FIA. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport said a new rear wing was among the very last upgrades to be trialled by Fernando Alonso as the Mugello test concluded late on Thursday. “The wing has only minor changes. You have to look closely,” read the report. The magazine reported rumours that the wing might eventually accommodate the so-called ‘double-DRS’ or 2012-style F-duct, which would work in conjunction with a new and so far unseen front wing. “That (wing) will debut along with a new diffuser and nose in Barcelona,” added Auto Motor und Sport. There were happy faces in the Ferrari garage on Thursday, as – despite a minor off by Alonso – the upgrades appeared to work well. “Barcelona will be a key moment in the season, but not a decisive one,” the Spanish driver insisted. “It’s not a case that we will suddenly find ourselves back on pole position, because there is no magic button.” Echoing the earlier words of Mark Webber, Alonso said the “fastest car” at Mugello this week was the Lotus. Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko agrees: “It looks like Lotus are the quickest.” Veteran Swiss correspondent Roger Benoit wrote in Blick newspaper: “Lotus, with Kimi Raikkonen in super shape, is the championship dark horse.” |

Alguersuari axe ‘incomprehensible’(0) Jaime Alguersuari’s father has slammed Red Bull’s decision to axe his son. Jaime Alguersuari snr said the decision by Dr Helmut Marko to oust the young Spaniard after a strong season and at the age of 21 was “unfair and incomprehensible”. But “whoever killed him buried him badly,” Alguersuari snr added, referring to his son’s new full time roles as co-commentator on British radio and with Pirelli. Alguersuari snr, who is involved with the organisation of the Renault World Series, said his son is due to test Pirelli’s 2010 Renault test car next week. According to EFE news agency, Alguersuari snr also said his son’s career to date has been more impressive than Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne, who are Toro Rosso’s new drivers. |

‘Only certainty is uncertainty’ in F1 2012Comments Off All this year’s title contenders know after four ‘flyaway’ races in 2012 is that they do not know what will happen in Spain next month. “The only certainty is uncertainty,” read the German headline at Netzeitung. With F1 generally regarded in the wider world as a sport with predictable results, this is an entirely new situation. “The statistics show that it’s been nine years since there have been four different winners in the first four races,” said Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali. Indeed, the famous Italian team as well as McLaren, Mercedes and Red Bull have won the opening races of 2012, and also with potentially winning pace have been Lotus and Sauber. “More than that,” continued Domenicali, “you have to go back 29 years to find the last time four different cars won.” One explanation is that F1 has never been more competitive, with plenty of well-oiled teams and no fewer than six world champion drivers on the grid. But Domenicali thinks Pirelli is the dominant factor. And not everybody is happy about that. Michael Schumacher told Bild newspaper that this year’s tyres degrade so fast that rubber “flies from the rim” if he pushes too hard in a corner. “We drive around like the safety car. It is not a satisfying situation,” the seven time world champion said. Pirelli’s motor sport director Paul Hembery is unimpressed with the rebuke, insisting that the Italian marque is only trying to “make tyres that make the races exciting”. “We cannot take individual drivers into consideration,” the Briton insisted. “It would be dead easy for us to make tyres that don’t break down. Then the top ten would also be the top ten in the race. “But no one wants to see boring processions,” Hembery claimed. Agreed the Swiss headline at Blick: “Pirelli is sweeping away the boredom”. Indeed, not even the other Mercedes driver, Shanghai winner Nico Rosberg, agrees with Schumacher. “It’s total chaos. You don’t know who is going to be fast at the next track,” he is quoted by DPA agency. “Formula one has become almost unlike any other sport. “Yes, you cannot drive any laps any more at full throttle. Often, it’s like driving on ice. But that’s a big and an interesting challenge,” said the German. Undoubtedly exciting for the fans, but the teams are having to adapt quickly. Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport said on Sunday that Vettel’s victory could mean Red Bull resumes its dominant grip on F1. ‘The dead live longest’ beams Marko after BahrainComments Off With Red Bull the latest to hold a trophy aloft this year, yet another potential 2012 champion has emerged. In theory, back to back world champion Sebastian Vettel, the Bahrain grand prix winner, was always a contender for a third drivers’ crown this year. But his RB8 was not a race winner until Sunday, after McLaren, Mercedes and even Ferrari had tasted the first victory spoils so far this season. It was said that – amid the extraordinary field of 2012 – Adrian Newey’s latest creation was simply in the league of other midfielders including Lotus, Sauber, and perhaps even Williams and Toro Rosso. But as Dr Helmut Marko remarked at the chequered flag: “Those pronounced dead live longest!” “We never wrote them off,” McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh insisted to Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport, “because we knew that they had a good car and that they only needed to find the key. “This season is really crazy; more exciting than we would like!” the Briton admitted. “And now we have to say Lotus are also contenders.” German Vettel won in Bahrain from pole, but even he admitted that the weekend was a surprise. “After Australia it seemed that McLaren had a supercar and it would be difficult to beat them, at least in the short term,” he is quoted by O Estado de S.Paulo. So even the experts are at a loss after the initial ‘flyaway’ phase of the new world championship. “We know that we know nothing,” beamed Vettel after his victory, referring to the oddly see-sawing balance of power in 2012, blamed mainly on the Pirelli tyres. “It is almost impossible to predict in advance how the different tyre compounds are going to behave on race day,” he is quoted by Der Spiegel. “You have an idea, but nothing more.” |

Red Bull ‘has a plan’ to bounce back in ChinaComments Off Red Bull is ready to start bouncing back from a difficult start to 2012. That is the claim of the energy drink owned team’s racing consultant Dr Helmut Marko, who acknowledged that Australia and Malaysia was not a good start to the campaign for a third-consecutive championship-winning season. Comparing the reigning world champions with McLaren, Ferrari’s technical director Pat Fry agreed on Tuesday: “I’ve been slightly surprised by Red Bull’s lack of pace.” Marko acknowledged: “Over the race distance (in Malaysia) we saw that (Sauber’s Sergio) Perez was the fastest,” the Austrian said on Servus TV. “In wet but also in dry conditions, the Sauber was absolutely the fastest one. “On the other hand, the whole package did not come together for us,” Marko insisted, referring specifically to bad pitstops, and broken radios. “There are so many things that have to come together. But we have a plan for how to deal with it for China, to solve our problems. “I’m confident that we will get it back together sooner or later. “It makes things of course more exciting, although not quite as easy for us,” he smiled. |

Mercedes’ clever F-duct not easily copiedComments Off In the case of Sauber’s clever exhaust solution, Red Bull simply rolled out a copy in the days before the 2012 season. Writing in O Estado de S.Paulo, Brazilian correspondent Livio Oricchio said the Sauber philosophy makes ingenious use of something called the ‘Coanda effect’. In the wake of the FIA’s strict clampdown on blown exhaust technology for 2012, the C31 uses the Coanda effect – named after Romanian aerodynamics pioneer Henri Coanda – to legally entice the flow of exhaust to the diffuser. Ferrari is understood to be the next team set to follow suit. Red Bull, Ferrari and Lotus, however, have a vastly different attitude when it comes to Mercedes’ clever F-duct, which uses the existing DRS rules to redirect air from the rear of the W03 car to the front. The concept not only significantly boosts straight line speed but also improves handling. The FIA’s Charlie Whiting has declared that Sauber and Mercedes are doing nothing wrong. But the three aforementioned teams continue to rail against the F-duct, even leaving open the threat of protest ahead of the Chinese grand prix. Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko explains: “Lotus, who are very responsible, have discovered two ways in which the F-duct is not in accordance with the regulations.” So is the difference in attitude when it comes to the Sauber and Mercedes innovations actually about the ease in which they can be copied? Oricchio quotes Red Bull’s Adrian Newey as having said in Malaysia: “In regard to the aerodynamic (F) duct of the Mercedes, and sending the airflow from the back to the front, it is necessary to review the entire project.” |

Marko: Red Bull has work to do to defend titleComments Off Dr Helmut Marko has admitted Red Bull has work to do in order to return to the front in formula one. Having dominated F1′s recent history, the energy drink owned team is now behind McLaren in the constructors’ standings after two races in 2012, while its highest placed driver is Mark Webber in fourth. Austrian Marko, the motor racing advisor to Red Bull mogul Dietrich Mateschitz, insisted that Adrian Newey and his technical team have built a good car for 2012. “But it doesn’t help,” he told Salzburg television channel Servus TV, “if we are the fastest only in certain conditions, rather than consistently. “To tell you the truth, at the moment it’s almost as though the car decides when it is the fastest, and when it is not,” Marko said during the ‘Sport und Talk aus dem Hangar-7′ programme. The outspoken manager also vigorously defended Sebastian Vettel in the wake of the Narain Karthikeyan affair, after Red Bull’s world champion lost his temper with the HRT driver following a clash in Malaysia. Marko firmly pointed the finger at F1′s backmarkers. “We have told our team manager to talk to both Marussia and Hispania about getting their drivers to simply pay more attention,” he said. “They are driving in another league, they’re six or eight seconds slower, and so they need to watch out more than they do. “They are 12 points Vettel lost that could be crucial in the world championship,” added Marko. He also fended off the claim that Vettel’s behaviour in Malaysia, featuring the display of middle fingers and calling Karthikeyan an “idiot”, was not worthy of a role model. “You’ve just been in a race, you’ve seen the chance of possibly a third place go away — you’re naturally upset because he’s a human as well. “I think we can understand an emotional reaction,” added Marko. |

‘F-duct’ saga to continue into ChinaComments Off The 2012 ‘F-duct’ controversy looks set to keep running for now. “It’s not over yet,” confirmed Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko to Germany’s Auto Bild. In Australia and Malaysia, the threat of results protests hung over the opening races of 2012, due to some teams – chiefly Red Bull and Lotus – questioning the legality of the aerodynamic innovation on Mercedes’ 2012 car. Until now, the FIA has declared that the system – working in unison with the driver-operated DRS – is fully legal. But it has emerged that Lotus technical director James Allison has come up with another argument against the technology that will be posed to the FIA’s Charlie Whiting ahead of scrutineering for next weekend’s Chinese grand prix. It is believed that while Ferrari is on Red Bull and Lotus’ side at present, Mercedes-powered McLaren is currently staying out of the debate altogether. |

Martin Brundle: Struggling Red Bull the ‘surprise’ of 2012Comments Off Martin Brundle has described Red Bull’s lack of pace as the biggest surprise of the 2012 season so far. After consecutive world championships with Sebastian Vettel, the energy drink-owned team was universally tipped as the pre-season favourite for yet another F1 title. But McLaren dominated in Australia before Ferrari and Sauber surprisingly set the pace recently in Malaysia. Former F1 driver Brundle admitted the struggling RB8 was the surprise of the opening salvo in 2012, but he also acknowledged that the turnaround might have been predicted. “When you look at how the regulations have changed, it’s almost like they were designed to slow the Red Bulls down,” the Sky television commentator told the website of the BBC programme Top Gear. “Doubling the torsional stiffness of the front wings, the way Red Bull were ‘flying’ their car down the track with lots of rake, nose close to the ground, exhausts helping to sort the high rear ride height out, it’s all been taken away from them,” added Brundle. An unnamed engineer at Red Bull has admitted the team was caught on the hop in the winter pre-season, when it became clear McLaren was better prepared for the new rules. “McLaren came with a (exhaust) system on the edge of legality,” the engineer told Germany’s Auto Bild, “and it was declared legal by the FIA. “So (Adrian) Newey had to adapt,” he added, referring to Red Bull’s last-minute decision to change tack at the very end of the pre-season test period. The message coming from the Milton Keynes based team, therefore, is that Red Bull is playing catch-up. “We need to understand the car better,” admits team advisor Dr Helmut Marko, “which is why for the next race (in China) we will have hardly any new parts.” So until he’s back at the front, F1′s formerly-dominant Vettel – who lashed out at backmarker Narain Karthikeyan recently in Malaysia – needs to adapt. Asked if the German was justified in calling his Indian rival an “idiot”, Brundle insisted: “No. “That’s just an angry man who hasn’t got a front-running car at the moment. He’s just frustrated.” |

Vettel not in trouble, Marko insistsComments Off Dr Helmut Marko has denied reports Sebastian Vettel was summoned to Red Bull’s headquarters this week to explain his behaviour at the recent Malaysian grand prix. The Narain Karthikeyan-saga aside, reports suggested the German deliberately ignored his bosses’ instruction that he retire his RB8 – ostensibly due to a brake issue – so that he could fit a new gearbox without penalty in China. The reports suggested Vettel had confessed immediately after the race that he heard the instruction but chose to ignore it. “That is all nonsense,” Red Bull’s motor racing consultant Marko told Sport Bild. “Sebastian did nothing – absolutely nothing – that was against our wishes.” Marko said Vettel’s visit to Milton Keynes this week was scheduled long ago, adding that he will be working inside the driver simulator amongst other things. He also hit back at claims the 24-year-old could be penalised by the FIA for breaching the code of conduct when he showed the ‘middle finger’ to Karthikeyan. “The matter was resolved during the meeting with the stewards (in Malaysia). For me, the case is closed.” Speaking to Kolner Express newspaper, however, an FIA spokesman confirmed that the code of conduct forbids superlicense holders from insulting their rivals. But he added: “I imagine the application of this paragraph was considered by the stewards in Malaysia.” And Sebastian Vettel’s spokeswoman said: “We know of no investigation.” |

Marko: Vettel team order ‘not tactical’Comments Off Red Bull has hit back at claims the team lied about a technical problem in Malaysia in order to gain a tactical advantage for the forthcoming races. Near the end of the Sepang race, Sebastian Vettel’s engineer repeatedly instructed the back-to-back world champion to retire his RB8 car. Team boss Christian Horner said the brake temperatures had risen to a dangerous level, but Vettel nonetheless raced to the chequered flag and finished eleventh, one position out of the points. Horner explained Vettel did not hear the radio calls due to a “lightening strike”, but photos prove that the German driver was also repeatedly shown pit boards with the same messages. And the 24-year-old revealed after the race: “Of course you can save the car, but I wanted to see the chequered flag. I think that’s how it should be.” Moreover, the authoritative Auto Motor und Sport quotes Vettel as confirming: “I heard the command.” Red Bull has been accused in some media reports of feigning the brake problem in order to retire the car for tactical reasons and therefore install a fresh gearbox for China next month without penalty. Dr Helmut Marko told Bild newspaper: “After the crash (with Narain Karthikeyan), the temperature of the brakes rose far above the allowed level. “We called him in purely because the car was no longer safe. It was not a tactical decision,” the Austrian insisted. It is reported that Vettel will sit with his team bosses this week in Milton-Keynes to discuss the apparently ignored team order. German racing legend Hans-Joachim Stuck said: “Another driver would be fired, but Vettel has the confidence of being a double world champion.” According to Welt newspaper, Swiss commentator Marc Surer added: “It was the right decision by Vettel, as the team needs to be careful with commands like that.” |
