Ecclestone says Mercedes deal ’80 per cent’ done(0) Bernie Ecclestone claims he is close to reaching an agreement with Mercedes over the future of the German marque’s involvement in formula one. The parties have been at loggerheads over the F1 chief executive’s refusal to offer to Mercedes the same Concorde Agreement deal reached with other top teams Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull. In response, it has been suggested not only that the situation threatened the sport’s floatation plans, but that Mercedes could sensationally quit F1 at the end of this year. “We are now 80 per cent there,” Ecclestone told the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag in Barcelona. “The other 20 per cent, we will get there soon,” he added. “We have spoken with several Mercedes managers. I am sure we will see more of Mercedes in formula one.” Bild said the deal being discussed between Ecclestone and the Stuttgart based carmaker will see Mercedes in F1 at least through 2020. Norbert Haug, however, sounded surprised. “I have to apologise, but we don’t want to give any information at the moment about the state of the negotiations,” Mercedes’ motor racing vice-president insisted. |

China victory was ‘difficult day’ for Schumacher(0) It was a breakthrough for Mercedes and Nico Rosberg, but the Chinese grand prix was a “difficult day” for Michael Schumacher. That is the admission of Shanghai winner Rosberg, whose first race win after more than 100 attempts also delivered German marque Mercedes’ first works victory for more than half a century. “I felt he was very happy for me,” Rosberg told Auto Bild Motorsport, when asked what seven time world champion Schumacher’s reaction was. Since returning to F1 more than two years ago, 43-year-old Schumacher – although stepping up his pace in 2012 – is yet to finish a single grand prix on the podium. Nonetheless, he offered his congratulations “very, very warmly” after China, Rosberg revealed. “At the same time I know that it was, of course, a difficult day (for him),” he admitted. Norbert Haug, the team’s motor sport director, recently sounded inclined to keep Rosberg and Schumacher together beyond 2012, despite the fact the older and more famous German’s contract is ending. He insisted there is “nothing negative” about their relationship. As for ongoing rumours that Schumacher still enjoys number one status, Haug called that idea “absolute nonsense”. “Do you know what Nico said to me, before Michael came? He said ‘If you can get Michael (on the team), then try everything for it’.” Rosberg has not changed his tune. “There was never a situation in which Michael got anything before I did,” he confirmed. |

Although pressed harder than in recent seasons by his famous teammate Michael Schumacher in 2012, the German has a comfortable position at Mercedes. The 26-year-old told Sport Bild he might stay put for the rest of his career. “Forever in silver? Why not?” he is quoted as saying. Rosberg said he is in a “great position” to lead the famous German marque to the world championship. “My big goal is to be world champion with the Silberpfeil (Silver Arrow),” he insisted. “It occurs to me that it would taste even better than to win with Ferrari.” Rosberg said he wouldn’t even mind sharing the team with Sebastian Vettel, F1′s back-to-back reigning champion who has expressed interest in racing one day for a great marque like Mercedes or Ferrari. “I don’t mind, it could be anyone — Sebastian, whoever. I don’t see any problem with that,” said Rosberg. Costa says Ferrari lacked ‘style’ over sackingComments Off Aldo Costa has revealed he is unhappy with Ferrari’s comments in the wake of his departure last year. The Italian was stepped down as the famous team’s technical director, and he switched to Mercedes before the German marque made a significant step forwards with its 2012 car. He has remained quiet about his treatment by Ferrari until now, telling Autosprint magazine that the Maranello marque lacked “style and professionalism” as it handled its restructuring. Costa confirmed that he was referring to Ferrari’s suggestion that he lacked “creativity”. Press tips ‘small advantage’ for Red BullComments Off Most leading specialist publications see Red Bull as the continuing pacesetter in formula one. “They still have an advantage, but it’s smaller,” agreed Jenson Button, according to Brazil’s O Estado de S.Paulo. His boss Martin Whitmarsh added: “Red Bull has a solid, fast car, better than us in slow corners, but we’re better in the fast ones.” Switzerland’s Sonntagsblick, however, sees McLaren actually ahead of the energy drink-owned team, with Mercedes in third place and Force India a surprise fourth. “Red Bull is faster (than Mercedes),” said the German marque’s boss Ross Brawn, “and clearly a little more than we had hoped for,” he told Auto Motor und Sport. The international publications said Lotus, amid their chassis flaw problems, rank anywhere between third (Auto Motor und Sport) and eighth (Blick). According to the same press, Ferrari is in trouble, ranking no higher than fifth in the lists of the aforementioned publications — and the authoritative Auto Motor und Sport predicting nothing short of a disastrous season for the fabled Italian team. Felipe Massa is quoted by Spanish reporters as saying Barcelona was “a little more positive” than the Jerez test recently, and he was asked to rank the development of the new F2012 car out of ten. “Probably more than five. There is still much to do, but now we are closer than we were,” said the Brazilian. As for whether the car is a race winner, Massa added: “I hope so, but it’s very difficult to say anything in testing,” he is quoted by Finland’s Turun Sanomat. Indeed, Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi ended last week’s Barcelona test with the quickest time, but Blick’s veteran correspondent Roger Benoit warned against taking that too seriously. “When with the same tyres at the same time, (Mercedes’ Nico) Rosberg was a second faster per lap than Sauber’s Japanese,” he said. “In testing, the truth is seldom revealed — if the teams used lie detectors, they would all be laying exploded around us.” According to Britain’s Sun newspaper, Kobayashi confirmed: “I don’t think McLaren and Red Bull are slow. “We don’t really wish for wins or podiums. For us this is a bit too far away.” Instead, the midfield battle looks extremely tight, with Brazilian correspondent Livio Oricchio surmising that Sauber as well as Force India, Toro Rosso and Williams are all in there. “It will be race to race,” Toro Rosso’s Giorgio Ascanelli told the Italian press. “From what we’ve seen so far, this fight will be amazing.” And Oricchio concluded: “As for HRT and Marussia, who have not even presented their 2012 cars, they undoubtedly have capable people, but also almost as many difficulties.” |

Ross Brawn: F1 ‘may regret’ FOTA split(1) Mercedes is committed to the crumbling teams association FOTA, team boss Ross Brawn insists. It is rumoured Lotus could be the next to go. But McLaren’s Martin Whitmarsh remains the chairman, and media outlets on Wednesday quoted Mercedes’ Brawn as saying the German marque remains “very committed” to FOTA. “We believe it’s a great shame that we’ve lost some of the members from FOTA because I think we may live ultimately to regret that,” he is quoted by Sky Sports. Contemplating the reasons for the FOTA split, Brawn explained: “When there is outside pressure it pushed FOTA together. Now, there is not so much, the natural competitiveness of the teams is pushing it apart a bit. “I hope we don’t regret it … because one of the objectives was to find the right solutions for F1, not just for individual teams.” |

Mercedes wing innovation called ‘W-duct’(1) Paddock insiders already have a name for Mercedes’ new front wing innovation — ‘W-duct’. The Finnish broadcaster MTV3, describing the system as ‘W-duct’, has provided some detail as to how it works. When the car is being driven in a straight line, air flows into the tip of the silver car’s nose and is dispersed in a W-like pattern across the length of the front wing. But when the car is cornering, the air flows more predominantly to one side or the other, improving the balance and handling. Unlike the driver-operated rear wing F-duct, which was banned for 2011, Mercedes’ system is entirely passive and requires no moving parts, and is therefore legal. Meanwhile, team boss Ross Brawn on Tuesday defended Mercedes’ strategy of employing numerous technical bosses, including Aldo Costa, Bob Bell and Geoff Willis. “How it works is a mystery to me,” Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko told Die Welt newspaper, “but Mercedes must know what they’re doing.” |

Rosberg targets Ferrari seat for 2013Comments Off Nico Rosberg is reluctant to commit to Mercedes beyond his current contract, according to a Spanish sports newspaper. The Marca daily said Mercedes is desperate to re-sign him for 2013 and beyond, but claims the young German is stalling for now as he watches the driver market. With Jenson Button now committed to McLaren beyond next season, Rosberg could emerge as a leading candidate to replace Felipe Massa at Ferrari. “Marca has learned that Rosberg wants to wait on renewing his contract with Mercedes in order to try his luck in negotiating with Ferrari next year,” said the report. Mercedes’ motor sport president Norbert Haug admitted at Suzuka that the German marque wants to tie up Rosberg. “I have Nico until 2012 and, if I had my way, for much longer,” he said. Mercedes to boost Brackley staff by 100Comments Off Mercedes is looking to boost its F1 staff numbers by 100 people, according to German newspaper Bild-Zeitung. Bild said all the other top teams, including Red Bull (525 people), Ferrari and McLaren (both 550) have significantly higher staff numbers. The news that Mercedes has embarked on a major recruitment drive for its F1 team follows the visit to the Nurburgring last weekend of Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche. And team boss Ross Brawn was quoted as saying: “The potential of this car has been exhausted.” Bild said Mercedes GP is advertising for 39 jobs, with several of those positions “to be filled twice or even three times”. |
