Ferrari say Massa contender for 2013 race seat(0) Ferrari has played down rumours it is close to immediately ousting Felipe Massa, insisting it is possible the struggling Brazilian will still be in a red car next year. On Twitter, the famous Italian team said the latest rumours – including a claim that former Virgin driver Jerome d’Ambrosio is a candidate to replace Massa in 2012 – are “funny”. But it was Ferrari itself who fuelled the speculation, publishing a statement on its website that read like a warning to Massa. “It was a very carefully-worded statement, wasn’t it?” said Telegraph correspondent Tom Cary. “The way this crazy season is going, I really would not be massively shocked if they ditched him mid-season.” The Swiss newspaper Blick said Monaco next weekend could be the 30-year-old’s last chance to up his game. And the candidates are lining up. “Ferrari knows that I’m ready. If they need me or they want me, then they will call me,” Adrian Sutil, who accompanied his manager to last weekend’s Spanish grand prix, said. The Spanish newspaper El Mundo said some paddock pundits believe “the only reason” Massa still has its seat is because the “name Todt” – a reference not only to Massa’s manager Nicolas but to the FIA president – has a “protective arm” around him. Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni told Brazil’s O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper this week: “Felipe has the full confidence of the team, starting with our president. “We have not decided who will be our driver in 2013 but Felipe is not ruled out,” he insisted. Indeed, while some believe Ferrari has hung a sword of Damocles above Massa’s head, others think the Maranello based team have been patient since the Paulista’s recovery from his near-fatal head injuries of 2009. “We have no evidence that makes us think that Felipe has slowed down because of the accident. Zero,” Colajanni said. F1 doctor Gary Hartstein agreed: “An experience like that (Hungary 2009) changes you, but you can’t say that’s why Felipe has not won again.” |

Spain, Spa, France, Canada and Russia – race rumours(0) Valencia will not be on next year’s F1 calendar, Bernie Ecclestone said on Saturday. He confirmed that, starting in 2013, an annually alternating deal between the Spanish port city and Barcelona will begin. Barcelona, the scene of this weekend’s Spanish grand prix, will host the race in 2013, before Valencia returns to the schedule in 2014, the F1 chief executive told Reuters. Less secure, meanwhile, is France’s touted spot on the 2013 calendar, particularly with the country’s new anti-F1 president Francois Hollande now taking power. Until recently, the F1 chief executive was saying Paul Ricard was set to join the 2013 calendar, annually alternating a race date with Belgium’s Spa Francorchamps. As for the state of the deal now, the 81-year-old admitted: “I have no idea. No idea what they (France) are doing. “It’s a funny arrangement they were making anyway. So I just don’t know.” Ecclestone is also working on a new deal for the popular Canadian grand prix, having told promoter Francois Dumontier that the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve needs to be upgraded. “There are two ways of looking at it,” Dumontier, in the paddock of the Circuit de Catalunya, is quoted by La Presse newspaper. “Either Bernie requires an annual fee windfall, or he will charge a reasonable fee and ask in return for investment in the infrastructure.” He said the contract on the table is for 10 more years, taking Montreal’s existing deal through 2024. Ecclestone said on Saturday that he is sure an agreement will be reached, because Canada is one of F1′s most loved destinations. “I remember saying to Bernie, ‘New York, Austin, I don’t know why you want to go there. Your sure bet is Montreal’. He knows that. “He’s been in Montreal for 34 years. And in the 22 years of the grands prix in the United States, they’ve had eight different cities. “He said ‘You’re right’,” added Dumontier. Another rumour, repeated by The Times’ Kevin Eason on Saturday, is that the planned 2014 Russian grand prix in Sochi “is doomed”. |

Berger: Rosberg now in top F1 drivers’ leagueComments Off Nico Rosberg’s F1 breakthrough proves he is ready to fight even for the world championship. That is the view of former grand prix winner, team boss and co-owner Gerhard Berger, following Rosberg’s first pole and win in China last weekend. “It surprised not me, but all the others who had doubted him,” the Austrian told Auto Bild Motorsport. “It was about time. I was worried,” Berger smiled, “because I have always said I thought Nico was faster than Michael (Schumacher). “Now he is finally where he has belonged for a long time — in the same league as Vettel, Hamilton, Alonso and Button,” he insisted. “And when the (Mercedes) car is good enough, he is already ready for the world title.” Berger, then as BMW motor sport director, said he was instrumental in 2002 in convincing Sir Frank Williams to give the then 17-year-old Rosberg his first F1 test. Also welcoming Sunday’s breakthrough is Nelson Piquet junior, another son of a world champion who actually went to kindergarten with Rosberg in Monaco. “It’s funny how in F1 things can take so long to happen,” the Brazilian told Globo. “It took him more than six years to get his first victory, which for me is a long time considering how good a driver he is,” added Piquet, now in Nascar. |

2011 to be Villeneuve’s last push for F1 returnComments Off Jun.11 (GMM) Jacques Villeneuve says he will make one final effort and then give up trying to return to formula one. The 1997 world champion was reportedly high on the list for a Stefan GP seat this season, but the Serbian outfit was not granted an official entry to race the 2010-specification Toyota car. French Canadian Villeneuve, who last raced in F1 with BMW in 2006, turns 40 early next season, and he told reporters on Thursday that 2011 will be his last-ditch effort to come back. “I’m quite happy right now being busy raising kids,” he said at a road safety event near Montreal alongside his former title nemesis Michael Schumacher. “I would obviously be happier behind a wheel. Once you’ve been a racer, I think you’re a racer all your life. “I worked hard on (trying to return to F1 for) 2010. I’m giving myself until 2011. There’s still a few months,” added Villeneuve. The assembled reporters laughed after asking Schumacher, who retired in 2006 but returned to F1 full-time with Mercedes this year, if he thinks it is a good idea if Villeneuve also comes back. “I don’t know what is funny about that,” said the German. “The point is, as Jacques was saying, we are racers, and we have that in our blood. So, what you have there, you always keep.” Villeneuve admits it is a difficult task trying to convince F1 bosses to give him another chance. “The teams don’t want to take a risk. There comes a point where you’ve been out for too long and the teams just won’t give you a chance,” he said. |

Berger backs Schumacher amid comeback negativityComments Off
May 4 (GMM) Gerhard Berger has backed Michael Schumacher amid a climate of continuing criticism of the seven time world champion’s performance so far in 2010. Four races into 41-year-old Schumacher’s F1 comeback at the wheel of a Mercedes, the critique of pundits has ranged from a verdict of disappointment to a harsh denigration of his skills after three years of retirement. “I find all the talk about Michael a bit tedious, because it is always with a negative slant,” 10-time GP winner Berger, who raced in Schumacher’s era until retiring in 1997, said on Austrian TV ‘Sport und Talk aus dem Hangar 7′. “Michael has come back and is doing what he wants. I think you cannot change the status of someone who is a seven time world champion,” added the 50-year-old former Ferrari and McLaren driver. Austrian Berger backs Schumacher to improve his pace in the forthcoming races. “We know his ambition. We know that if he does something, he does it right. I think we must take him seriously again in the future,” he said. After the initial three races of 2010, Berger admits that Schumacher’s performance in China was a setback. “It was weak, but that can happen,” said the former teammate of the late F1 great Ayrton Senna. “I think he has done an excellent job so far — except for the last race. In the first three grands prix he was in the top six of the championship. That is a great achievement,” added Berger. Also defending Schumacher is his countryman and friend Sebastian Vettel, who until the great German’s struggle in 2010 was nicknamed by the German press ‘Baby-Schumi’. “He is yet to exhaust the potential of his car and will therefore get better from a driving point of view from race to race,” the Red Bull driver told Switzerland’s Motorsport Aktuell. “I wouldn’t write him off for a long time,” added 22-year-old Vettel. Force India’s Adrian Sutil also sees nothing odd about Schumacher’s comeback to date. “I had counted on it being difficult for him. Formula one has changed to the extremes in the past few years so that you can lose half a second and not know exactly why,” he told spox.com. “Plus it would have been funny if Schumacher had beaten us all after three years of being retired — then he really would have been the god of F1. “That doesn’t mean he’s doing badly; on the contrary, he’s always in the top ten. He only needs time,” added Sutil. |

Vettel opened his 2010 victory account in SepangComments Off Highlights of the answers given by Malaysian Grand Prix winner Sebastian Vettel, in his Red Bull Racing Renault, during the post race press conference at Sepang
A victory today set up by an excellent start and one that looked fairly comfortable if you ever can be comfortable in the heat of Malaysia.
How much of a relief was that after the last couple of races?
Mark held onto you pretty much in the opening stages but in the second stint he came back at you. Was that all to do with the traffic?
It only took you one race to wipe out the gap to Massa and Alonso, who were quite far ahead. Were you expecting to do that so quickly?
Last year you won the third race, and this year you’ve now won the third race. Are you on the same schedule like last year, to carry on fighting for the championship? |

Harvick wins Saturday’s Shootout at DaytonaComments Off This Saturday Kevin Harvick won Budweiser Shootout at Daytona for second consecutive time, but even though he’s very happy, he’s aware that this victory does not guarantee his success in the 2010 race at Daytona 500 Last year, Harvick almost won the Daytona 500 race where he finished in second position after Matt Kenseth. However, his overall performance during the whole season was far from what he expected. Still he had to admit he’s excited after winning Saturday’s non-points event behind the wheel of his No. 29 RCR-powered Chevrolet for the second consecutive year. Although he said there are no guarantees that things improve this year, he hopes that the rest of the season is much better than the last. He declared “he is painfully aware of the fickle nature of races at Daytona International Speedway. What he accomplished Saturday night was great, but in the long run of Speedweeks at DIS it may not mean a whole lot, or even anything at all. “I’ve been here enough times to know this can be a funny week,” Harvick said. “It can mess with you time after time. Hour by hour can bring something that’s unexpected, just like getting sick to start the week. I mean, that’s not something that you plan for or can plan for. “Getting sick … having the car wrecked in the first practice with someone else driving it … there are just so many variables that can get thrown at you this week, you just have to stay even keel. This is great that we won this race. We’re all really excited about what we want to do. But the big picture is on Sunday. It’s just taking it hour by hour, one day at a time, and stay concentrated.” |

The different aerodynamic solutions of 2010Comments Off Subsequent to the first two testing days where the single-seaters were seen, there are aerodynamic solutions for all tastes. During these days, it has been surprising how the engineers have hurried to cover the diffusers when the single-seaters enter the boxes. Funny, because some moments later they’re back in the racetrack and it would be difficult to run after the car to cover the diffuser, wouldn’t it? Leaving the “funny” note aside, let’s take a look at how the aerodynamics of the seven scuderias that have been presented in these official tests at the Valencian circuit have evolved. I must say that it’s not an analysis of the aerodynamics, but of some visible changes. FERRARI The engineers of the Italian ‘scuderia’ chose to change the nose and wing in a significant way. The nose seems to be lower than last year’s increasing its descending curve, with a softened V form (below, in the photo gallery you can enlarge the picture to see in more detail.) For 2010, Ferrari has initially chosen to include a sharp fin, similar to the one that became fashionable with Red Bull, last year. MERCEDES No doubt, one of the cars with more changes, if we take the Brawn GP as reference. The nose is even lower than Ferrari’s, with less tip and more rounded. Very similar to last year’s well-known Red Bull design. Contrary to the rest of the scuderias, they have selected a short tail behind the air inlet over the pilot (engine’s lid). RENAULT Renault does not contribute with any extraordinary changes in its front, following its aerodynamic philosophy of a robust appearance, “rough” nose. It has a descending angle, but lacks the famous V shape that can be seen in other single-seaters. Just as it finished last season, Renault uses a great sharp fin as engine lid. MCLAREN The MP-4 follows an evolution from its previous model, without the V shape used by Ferrari or Mercedes. Its nose is rounded and seems higher than others,’ even though, the front double wing is wider and have joined the “sharp fin” fashion. Peculiar interpretation of the sharp fin, since it almost finishes in the rear aileron. However, we’re still investigating the camera options on the single-seaters. Note that Ferrari, McLaren and Williams “have an integrated periscope.” WILLIAMS
Aside from the periscope, its possible the single-seater with less changes of all that we have seen (a priori). The characteristics that stand out the most are a very flat and high nose, together with a front double aileron. Hopefully, tomorrow we’ll go to another place where we can see the rear of the car, because we’ve heard that’s the part of the single-seater with more changes. BMW SAUBER As you can appreciate in this photograph, aerodynamically it seems like a completely new single-seater. A nose with little drop, and a long but mostly high “sharp fin.” When I say ‘high’, I mean that it does not fall as other scuderias’, but it’s rather a great extension of the air intake. TORO ROSSO The new Toro Rosso’s nose follows the trend of its previous model with only some slight touches. However, the rear section is the one that has had the most evolution in 2010. The sharp fin is an innovation joining with the rear aileron of the racing car. The idea is to transfer the most quantity of air possible to the rear aileron. Is that a solution to get extra grip? Awaiting to see “the revolutionary USF1″ that according to the North Americans breaks with anything ever seen, this year the scuderias have changed a great deal the exterior of the racing cars. Enjoy the gallery. |

Stefan GP is shaping up as reserve teamComments Off Speculation has begun because the Campos Meta ‘scuderia’ condition is unknown. According to a press conference by the Stefan GP’s team itself, headed by the Serbian entrepreneur Zoran Stefanovic, who today announced that they have reached an agreement with Toyota for the technical assistance as they allegedly incorporate to the Formula One. “Stefan GP has clarified its intention to compete in the Formula One. It has reached a basic agreement with Toyota Motorsport so that it (Stefan GP) receives technical support from the Japanese manufacturer,” the press release indicates. Stefan GP was one of the teams that did not enter this year. However, the ‘scuderia’ has not remained isolated; from the time of its refusal to enter as one of the new teams, it has had negotiations with Toyota. That being so, the Serbian team is shaping up as one of the main reserve teams to take the place that would be left vacant by any of the new teams that have joined the Formula One this year, if any of them withdraws, of course (it is understood that due to financial problems.) Last year, the current McLaren team CEO, Martin Whitmarsh, suggested the possibility that any of the new teams would be made up with the Toyota place, buying its chassis. “Many of these teams had the chance to buy a chassis from Toyota. The Japanese brand built two cars that were available before Christmas, and I’m quite surprised that some of them didn’t (buy a chassis).” Well, this seems to be the case of the Serbian team. The funny thing is that the team itself gave the press conference. Do they want to press due to the delays of some teams? |
