HRT used Monaco wings for high speed Monza HRT used Monaco wings for high speed MonzaComments Off

A mark of the struggling Spanish team HRT’s fragile financial situation was clearly on display during the Monza weekend.

The Cosworth-powered F110s, last on the grid and a full second shy of the next-quickest Virgin cars, tackled the Italian grand prix with its conventional bodywork package — used throughout the season so far, including at Monaco.

According to GPWeek, Hispania is therefore the first team “in decades” not to design a bespoke low-downforce package for the ultra high speed straights of the Autodromo Nazionale.

Bruno Senna said that, because of a lack of testing, making a last-minute modification for Monza would have compromised safety.

“So it was a bit of a rush and unfortunately it didn’t get done,” said the Brazilian driver.

And HRT’s financial situation took another hit at Monza, when the FIA imposed a $20,000 fine for the pitstop incident involving Sakon Yamamoto’s radio mechanic.

Sauber not dismissing Mexican rumours Sauber not dismissing Mexican rumoursComments Off

Peter Sauber on Friday refused to dismiss rumours linking his Swiss team with a major investment from Mexico.

Whilst working hard on securing a healthy budget for 2011, the formerly BMW-owned team has been running a mainly blank livery this season.

But paddock rumours have hinted at talks with Carlos Slim, the Mexican billionaire whose Telmex company already sponsors Sergio Perez in GP2.

And already with a Sauber contract is the Mexican teenage GP3 driver Esteban Gutierrez.

Asked about the Mexican link, Sauber said: “The team is attractive and has potential because it has an excellent infrastructure, absolutely comparable to that of the top teams.

“The fact that we cannot really rival the top teams is to do with our financial situation and head count. But the conditions are there,” he told F1′s official website.

Other than that, the Swiss insisted he doesn’t “comment on rumours”.

But he also revealed that Sauber’s young driver Gutierrez is closely linked with Slim.

“This is the reason why you will find Carlos Slim a bit more often in our hospitality than at those of other teams, but it is also no secret that Carlos Slim is a much-welcomed guest at all the other teams as well,” Sauber insisted.

Renault F1 has scoffed at reports suggesting its former French carmaker parent is considering buying back the Enstone based team.

Amid the car sales crisis and economic downturn, and the damaging crashgate scandal, Renault SA sold a rumoured 85 per cent of the team that still bears its name to Luxembourg-based investment firm Genii Capital.

But Finland’s Turun Sanomat claimed the carmaker’s financial situation has dramatically improved to the point that it is interested in returning wholeheartedly to F1.

“Rumour mill in overdrive with some creative stories on the web,” Renault F1 said via its official Twitter account.

“For the record, Renault are very happy with the Genii partnership, great visibility and a good relationship. No plans to change,” added RF1paddockpass.

Renault also dismissed rumours that Felipe Massa could be headed to Renault next year, with Robert Kubica linked once again to Ferrari.

“Has anybody seen Robert and Felipe standing next to each other? I’m not sure they’d fit in each other’s seats if they swapped,” wrote the team’s Twitter author.

Sauber is yet another team considering removing the F-duct system from its car for the forthcoming Italian grand prix.

McLaren intends to have a non-F-duct rear wing and engine cover at Monza next weekend, with simulations showing that weight saving and aerodynamic efficiency could mean a conventional setup is the more competitive option for the high speed circuit.

Robert Kubica has also hinted that his Renault will not have an F-duct at the Autodromo Nazionale, even though Ferrari’s Stefano Domenicali indicated that the F10 will still be running the device at Monza.

It has now emerged that Sauber could be yet another team contemplating its F-duct options for Italy.

“We will have the option to take off the F-duct,” said the Swiss team’s new technical director James Key.

“We will only make the final decision at the track,” he added in an interview with Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport.

Key also said Sauber is already working on the 2011 car at its Hinwil base.

“There are some areas of the regulations that are not yet 100 per cent clear, such as the functionality of the (adjustable) rear wing.

“But there is already enough for the teams to move forward with the development for next year,” he revealed.

Key also said he is confident about Sauber’s financial situation for 2011 and beyond.

“That is not my area, but I have no great concerns,” he said.

“I know we are actively working on it and that at Spa we were able to show a new logo on the rear wing.

“The direction is positive. With the improvement of the car, we have shown what we are capable of. If we can maintain that, I expect a further step forward next year.

“I am planning for the long term with Sauber,” added Key.

French carmaker Renault SA is reportedly considering buying back a majority stake in the formula one team that bears its name.

Amid the car sales crisis and economic downturn, and the damaging crashgate scandal, Renault sold a rumoured 85 per cent of the Enstone based team last year to Luxembourg-based investment firm Genii Capital.

With its new owners, Renault F1 has fared better than expected in 2010, culminating in Robert Kubica’s strong performance and third podium of the season so far at Spa-Francorchamps last weekend.

Finland’s Turun Sanomat claims that Renault SA’s financial situation has dramatically improved to the point that the carmaker is interested in returning wholeheartedly to F1.

The rumour ties in with ongoing speculation, also once again alluded to at Spa by new team boss Eric Boullier, that Kimi Raikkonen could return to formula one next year with Renault.

Bruno Senna will not confirm whether HRT is set to collaborate with Toyota’s former formula one team.

Earlier, Cologne based Toyota Motorsport also refused to comment, and now Brazilian Senna added: “I don’t think anything is signed.

“There is a lot to plan. First, the team needs to get to its feet. Everybody is working hard to have the right support and the best staff. Making plans is good.

“How it will be put into action is not yet sure,” he is quoted by Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport.

Senna said at Hockenheim on Thursday that, after sitting out Silverstone, he is only cautiously optimistic that he is now back in the Hispania car for the remainder of 2010.

“The most important thing for me is to have a cockpit for next year. We need to wait,” he continued, explaining that he arrived at Silverstone on Thursday expecting to drive, but ended up watching the race from home on the internet.

For now, he is happy to be back to work, but disappointed that earlier expectations for mid-season car upgrades have not come about.

“Our plans depend increasingly on the financial situation,” he said.

“If Virgin are really three or four tenths faster here, as they claim, then we will not be able to fight them,” added Senna.
