Klien: Alonso ‘stands out’ amid 2012 chaos(0) Even amid the chaos of the 2012 pecking order, the star performer is obvious. That is the view of former F1 driver Christian Klien, who confirmed to the Austrian news agency APA that one of his current roles is a simulator driver for the sport’s latest winning team, Williams. “It (2012) is very open,” he said, “but for me Fernando Alonso stands out.” Equal with Sebastian Vettel, Spaniard Alonso is at the top of the drivers’ world championship, a full eight points clear of Lewis Hamilton. The Spaniard’s car has been the struggling Ferrari F2012, but he has never finished a race this season lower than ninth (China). He has therefore scored points at every opportunity, even finishing first and second in Malaysia and Spain respectively. “Alonso has an inferior car,” Klien explained, “but he uses every single little opportunity. “He is the most complete driver who gets the most out of the package he has.” Triple world champion Sir Jackie Stewart agrees that, among arguably the most competitive grid of drivers since the late 80s, Alonso is the standout performer. “Right now we have the best generation of drivers we’ve had for a while,” the famous Scot told the Spanish sports daily AS. “Everyone talks about Vettel, who is a great driver, and also Hamilton of course, but there is also Button, Schumacher, Kimi — all champions. “There are others like Webber who also have the quality to win, young drivers coming up, many of them are very good, but also it is true that Alonso is fantastic.” Asked why the Spaniard has not added a title to his tally since 2006, Stewart said: “The explanation is easy — he hasn’t had the luck to get the best car. “Now he has one that isn’t good, but it’s in those circumstances that you see even more the quality that he has,” said Stewart. Given Alonso’s push to the top of the championship with a sub-standard car, therefore, all the talk about Ferrari writing off the 2012 championship has been silenced for now. “We have to keep developing the car,” Stefano Domenicali, Ferrari’s team boss, said after Barcelona, where significant upgrades were brought to the F2012 package. “We are not yet fast enough to consistently fight for the podium, but that is the only option if we want to be in contention for the title,” he insisted. |

Season of confusion to continue on Sunday(0) F1′s season of confusion looks set to continue, with an uncertain weather forecast only adding to the uncertainty ahead of the Spanish grand prix. The bizarre 2012 contest stepped into yet another gear on Saturday, with events unfolding to put the previously-derided pay driver Pastor Maldonado on pole, alongside the crisis-ridden Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso. And the Pirelli tyre predicament, worsened on the challenging Circuit de Catalunya layout and under hot Spanish skies, will continue to confound teams on Sunday, with temperatures set to drop and rain clouds predicted to gather. “I am telling you now, honestly,” said Red Bull’s Mark Webber. “We don’t have even the slightest idea who will benefit when it gets colder.” The German magazine Auto Motor und Sport laid out the fascinating if bewildering situation as of Saturday in Spain: “Sebastian Vettel doesn’t know why his car suddenly lost grip in qualifying. “Jenson Button has no idea why he couldn’t generate any tyre temperature on the 40 degrees track. Williams don’t know why Pastor Maldonado clocked the second fastest lap. “Mercedes’ engineers had to admit they still don’t understand the Pirelli rubber.” Acting team principal Bob Bell smiled tortuously: “If we did understand, we’d be on pole. But even Pirelli don’t know all the answers.” Writing in O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper, Livio Oricchio estimated there are up to 12 candidates for victory. “A grid of madness!” said former F1 driver Patrick Tambay on France’s RMC Sport. “And it’s not over yet.” So, is Michael Schumacher – having sat out Q3 in order to save tyres for the race – now even more critical of Pirelli? “I’ll leave it with what has already been said,” he insisted late on Saturday. |

Salo believes Bottas to replace Senna soonComments Off Former F1 driver Mika Salo believes his Finnish countryman Valtteri Bottas is being groomed by Williams for a race seat — in 2012. When the Toto Wolff-managed Bottas, 22, was announced as the British team’s 2012 reserve, Sir Frank Williams said he would practice on 15 Friday mornings and then “most likely” be replaced with a “more experienced driver” for the rest of those race weekends. That more experienced driver would ultimately turn out to be Bruno Senna. So with Brazilian Senna struggling so far in 2012, Salo has revealed he senses things could be about to change. “Bottas is incredibly respected by the team,” Salo, now a commentator for the Finnish broadcaster MTV3, said. “When I spoke with Frank Williams, he praised Valtteri to the skies, and said that he belongs in the races. “I asked him when and he said it wouldn’t be long. “Yes, I read between the lines that he means this season,” added Salo. One major spanner in the works, however, is that Senna brings crucial sponsorship to Williams. “It is a difficult situation for Williams, where both drivers bring money,” Salo acknowledged. “But the good thing is that Frank Williams is not a businessman first, he is an old racing driver. He thinks about nothing else but how to make his team successful. “Although Senna is a nice guy, he is not able to drive at the level that he needs to be at.” When asked about Salo’s theory, Bottas commented: “I have no information.” |

Spain to host tense drivers’ meeting on Friday(0) A tension has crept into F1 drivers’ relationships, as they look ahead to a fiery meeting at the Barcelona circuit on Friday. Fernando Alonso had given the first hints about the tension when he hit out at Nico Rosberg’s aggressive tactics in Bahrain three weeks ago. And earlier this week, the Spaniard insisted there is not enough “respect” between the drivers when they are jostling for position at grands prix. “Fernando made it pretty clear,” world champion Sebastian Vettel told reporters on Thursday. “He said ‘you have to leave the space — all the time you have to leave the space!’” Rosberg said he is happy if discussions about his driving take place this weekend, but also in the firing line is Lewis Hamilton, who passed the Mercedes driver on the asphalt run-off in Bahrain. “I was surprised Lewis was allowed to keep his position,” said Mark Webber. “I’m sure we’ll talk about it in the drivers’ briefing.” McLaren’s Hamilton insisted he did nothing wrong, but he added: “I’m not really bothered. It’s good to have clarity. “Mark is probably one of the most – if not the most – outspoken individuals here (in F1), so that is the least I expect from him.” Also among the most aggressive – and regularly criticised – drivers is Michael Schumacher, and he insisted that the FIA is fully able to make judgements about incidents. “If it’s not within the rules the FIA would have taken action,” said the seven time world champion, referring to the incidents in Bahrain. “They didn’t and I didn’t see anything wrong either.” |

De Villota not ruling out Friday drive(0) Maria de Villota is not ruling out appearing during a Friday morning practice session some time in 2012. The 32-year-old Spaniard made international headlines in March when she signed with Marussia as a test driver. She subsequently admitted, however, that – despite travelling to all the grands prix with the former Virgin team this year – she is “not the reserve driver”. De Villota, whose father Emilio is a former F1 driver, also clarified in March that she is not contracted to practice on Friday mornings. But she is not ruling it out now. “It depends on the team,” she told the Spanish news agency EFE. “I am trying to do all my duties well so that they are happy with me. And I think they are,” said de Villota. “But the car is new and the drivers need the miles to develop it. So it’s up to the team (to decide). “Hopefully it will happen soon, but what happens this year will happen. There may be surprises, but for now I am getting to do a lot of work in the simulator.” Meanwhile, she made a bold prediction when asked which team she tips to win the so-far unpredictable 2012 championship. “I think that McLaren is very strong,” said de Villota. Pirelli job ‘not an option’ for Sutil(0) Becoming Pirelli’s test driver was “not an option” for Adrian Sutil, the out-of-work F1 driver has admitted. “Right now I’m waiting,” the former Force India driver told Eurosport Deutschland. German Sutil, 29, was an established F1 driver until 2011, when he became embroiled in a legal battle with Lotus team executive Eric Lux over an assault. He has been left without a seat for 2012, causing many to wonder why he – and not the less experienced Jaime Alguersuari – was not selected to test with F1′s official tyre supplier Pirelli. “A collaboration with Pirelli didn’t work out, but I was never in contact with them directly,” Sutil said. “It wasn’t an option.” He also didn’t find a test or reserve seat with a team. “The fact that there is hardly any testing, of course, is not very helpful,” Sutil insisted. He has been linked with struggling Felipe Massa’s Ferrari seat. “I do have to hope,” admitted Sutil, “that either some drivers don’t do well, or a cockpit becomes available. That is my chance. “That drivers are changed is just a part of formula one,” added Sutil. “My plan is to wait and see if there is a possibility. If not, then of course you have to give serious thought about what to do in the future — in 2013.” |

F1 assesses fallout after damaging Bahrain saga(0) With the F1 world now returned from Bahrain, the sport is assessing the fallout of one of the most controversial grands prix in history. The drivers were conspicuously quiet over the saga in the island Kingdom, but – with no contract tying him down – former Force India driver Adrian Sutil admitted he was glad he was not there. “In a situation like that, it is probably better not to go,” the German said on Sky Deutschland. “On the one hand, the decision was made (to go to Bahrain), on the other hand, it’s very difficult when there are so many problems in a country.” Red Bull reserve driver Sebastien Buemi, who has family living in Bahrain, does not agree at all. “I arrived on Monday and I had no problem — maybe there were a few more police than two years ago, but nothing happened to me,” the Swiss insisted on Austrian Servus TV. Force India and Sauber, however, witnessed Molotov cocktail attacks on their treks to and from the circuit. And Caterham team spokesman Tom Webb told the Sun that there was “one minor incident when one of our (hire) vans slowed down in traffic and its occupants saw a local youth on the side of the main road brandishing a bottle with a rag stuffed in its neck”. World champion and race winner Sebastian Vettel also admitted the feeling was tense in the paddock throughout the weekend. “It was not easy for anyone,” the Red Bull driver admitted, according to SID news agency, “but I’m glad that nothing happened to any of us (in F1).” And the Telegraph quotes Vettel adding: “Hopefully, we come back in the future when everything’s a little bit safer.” Reuters reports that Vodafone, the main sponsor of the half Bahrain-owned McLaren team, sent no staff to the country and expressed concerns to the British outfit. But Jim Wright, an F1 sponsorship expert, told the Guardian that he thinks while the sport’s image took a beating last weekend, sponsors will be happy. “Most teams handled a difficult decision very well,” he said. “On that basis I think a lot of people would be pleased with that and happy to get involved with them.” The television audience was also unaffected – even boosted – with the BBC reporting more viewers for Bahrain than Australia and Malaysia, and Germany revealing similarly strong figures. Still, there remains criticism. “Now is an opportunity to reflect,” former F1 driver Alex Zanardi told Tuttosport, “and make sure that major sporting events are assigned only to governments that deserve the honour of hosting them. “Ecclestone is brilliant and has made formula one what it is, but he can’t administer races at any cost and above all else,” insisted the Italian. Due to security fears, Force India sat out a practice session on Friday so that staff could return to their hotels in daylight. F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone was reportedly enraged, and according to rumours got his revenge by instructing Formula One Management’s television cameras to ignore the Silverstone based team’s cars in qualifying. “There was a bit of fuss about what we did,” deputy team principal Bob Fernley is quoted by Spain’s AS newspaper, “and it was not easy, but I think it turned out to be the right response. “We had a lot of pressure, our attitude was not well received,” he confirmed, “but I think that we had a duty of care to our employees, and to do the right thing by the team.” |

Berger: Rosberg now in top F1 drivers’ leagueComments Off Nico Rosberg’s F1 breakthrough proves he is ready to fight even for the world championship. That is the view of former grand prix winner, team boss and co-owner Gerhard Berger, following Rosberg’s first pole and win in China last weekend. “It surprised not me, but all the others who had doubted him,” the Austrian told Auto Bild Motorsport. “It was about time. I was worried,” Berger smiled, “because I have always said I thought Nico was faster than Michael (Schumacher). “Now he is finally where he has belonged for a long time — in the same league as Vettel, Hamilton, Alonso and Button,” he insisted. “And when the (Mercedes) car is good enough, he is already ready for the world title.” Berger, then as BMW motor sport director, said he was instrumental in 2002 in convincing Sir Frank Williams to give the then 17-year-old Rosberg his first F1 test. Also welcoming Sunday’s breakthrough is Nelson Piquet junior, another son of a world champion who actually went to kindergarten with Rosberg in Monaco. “It’s funny how in F1 things can take so long to happen,” the Brazilian told Globo. “It took him more than six years to get his first victory, which for me is a long time considering how good a driver he is,” added Piquet, now in Nascar. |

Haug: Mercedes reaches F1 summit with ‘small budget’Comments Off Norbert Haug said he is proud Mercedes has reached the top of formula one in a short space of time and with a small budget. The German carmaker’s works team is often lumped together with F1′s other grandees including Ferrari and McLaren, but Haug insists the Brackley based outfit is in fact “a small team, with a small budget”. Mercedes’ competition boss, who on Sunday collected the winning constructors’ trophy on the Shanghai podium, also said some of the team’s rivals – undoubtedly Red Bull – “took five years to win”. “We have done it in two and a quarter,” the German told the RTL broadcaster. “That’s not bad at all. “And there are other teams that still have not made it.” So is Mercedes now a contender for the world championship, despite Haug’s earlier protestations that the team needs a few more campaigns under its belt for that? “It is too early to make a prediction,” he told Auto Motor und Sport. “I hope so, but so far we have seen three different winners in three races.” The newest of those winners is Nico Rosberg, who along with Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve are the only sons of F1 drivers to have also gone on to win grands prix. It is a good omen for Rosberg that both Hill and Villeneuve also won titles. Rosberg’s former Williams teammate, Alex Wurz, has high praise. “As a teammate (in 2007) he made my life difficult because he was such a fantastic qualifying driver. In the race it was then always okay. “But for this (race win) he deserves praise,” Wurz told the Austrian ORF broadcaster, “because he did everything after his pole position also sensationally.” But in Bahrain, there could be another winner, triple world champion Niki Lauda remarked. “I have never before seen F1 as interesting as this,” said the Austrian legend. “Every race we see another winner.” |

Hulkenberg happy without manager WeberComments Off Nico Hulkenberg insists he is happy in formula one without his famous manager Willi Weber. After a year on the reserve bench, the German returned to the grid in 2012 with Force India, but no longer represented by Weber, the famous former manager of the Schumacher brothers. “There were a few reasons why I separated with Willi Weber,” Hulkenberg told spox.com. “Now I’m doing it without some new management,” he explained. “I have assistants, because of course I can’t do everything by myself. “It’s going quite well at the moment.” Hulkenberg, 24, is not the only F1 driver without a manager, as Kimi Raikkonen now handles his own career. “I have (also) taken Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg as role models,” admitted Hulkenberg. |

Ma Qing Hua joins HRT Formula 1 Team’s Driver Development ProgrammeComments Off HRT Formula 1 Team announces the incorporation of Chinese driver Ma Qing Hua to the Spanish team’s young driver development programme. The formation programme designed by HRT F1 Team for Ma Qing Hua includes professional assessment in his career as a driver, private tests with cars from different categories and simulator tests. If the results of the partnership are satisfactory, Qing Hua could take to the wheel of the F112 at the Formula 1 Young Driver test. Ma Qing Hua will perform his first official act with HRT Formula 1 Team on Thursday the 12th of April at a press conference previous to the Chinese Grand Prix (13th to 15th of April), which takes place at the Shanghai International Circuit. The details of the press conference will be announced shortly. The incorporation of Ma Qing Hua to HRT Formula 1 Team’s driver development programme is part of the Spanish team’s strategy in order to serve as a platform for the formation of professionals in the pinnacle of world motorsport. The driver born in Shanghai has been competing in different categories of national and international motorsport for many years. His incorporation to HRT F1 Team’s Driver Development Programme takes place after some simulator tests and a testing session in Cheste (Valencia) at the wheel of a World Series car. The qualities and attitude of Qing Hua convinced Luis Pérez-Sala of his potential to incorporate him to the programme which Dani Clos, HRT F1 Team test driver, is also a part of. Martin Brundle: Struggling Red Bull the ‘surprise’ of 2012Comments Off Martin Brundle has described Red Bull’s lack of pace as the biggest surprise of the 2012 season so far. After consecutive world championships with Sebastian Vettel, the energy drink-owned team was universally tipped as the pre-season favourite for yet another F1 title. But McLaren dominated in Australia before Ferrari and Sauber surprisingly set the pace recently in Malaysia. Former F1 driver Brundle admitted the struggling RB8 was the surprise of the opening salvo in 2012, but he also acknowledged that the turnaround might have been predicted. “When you look at how the regulations have changed, it’s almost like they were designed to slow the Red Bulls down,” the Sky television commentator told the website of the BBC programme Top Gear. “Doubling the torsional stiffness of the front wings, the way Red Bull were ‘flying’ their car down the track with lots of rake, nose close to the ground, exhausts helping to sort the high rear ride height out, it’s all been taken away from them,” added Brundle. An unnamed engineer at Red Bull has admitted the team was caught on the hop in the winter pre-season, when it became clear McLaren was better prepared for the new rules. “McLaren came with a (exhaust) system on the edge of legality,” the engineer told Germany’s Auto Bild, “and it was declared legal by the FIA. “So (Adrian) Newey had to adapt,” he added, referring to Red Bull’s last-minute decision to change tack at the very end of the pre-season test period. The message coming from the Milton Keynes based team, therefore, is that Red Bull is playing catch-up. “We need to understand the car better,” admits team advisor Dr Helmut Marko, “which is why for the next race (in China) we will have hardly any new parts.” So until he’s back at the front, F1′s formerly-dominant Vettel – who lashed out at backmarker Narain Karthikeyan recently in Malaysia – needs to adapt. Asked if the German was justified in calling his Indian rival an “idiot”, Brundle insisted: “No. “That’s just an angry man who hasn’t got a front-running car at the moment. He’s just frustrated.” |

Vettel risks penalty for ‘middle finger’ tiradeComments Off The FIA could sanction F1′s reigning back-to-back world champion for his behaviour during the recent Malaysian grand prix. Before calling backmarker Narain Karthikeyan a “gherkin” and “idiot” in the wake of their collision, Sebastian Vettel was captured by his on-board camera twice displaying his middle-finger to the Indian driver. “I think he’s highly frustrated because he’s having a tough season,” Karthikeyan told the Deccan Chronicle on Wednesday. “It’s completely unprofessional to blame me for the incident. The derogatory remark only goes to show him in bad light. “Just because he has a good car, he can’t call others an idiot,” Karthikeyan continued. “I have won races in all the previous single-seater championships I have participated in so I don’t need a certificate from Vettel.” Reports in Germany, including in the Kolner Express, Bild and Die Welt newspapers, claim that Red Bull driver’s behaviour may have breached the new stricter code of conduct introduced by FIA president Jean Todt. The FIA has been contacted for comment. “He has breached the code of conduct,” former F1 driver Marc Surer told Germany’s Sky television. “You sign it when you get the license and then you have to behave correspondingly. “Any behaviour that hurts other people or the sport is an offense,” added the Swiss. Asked what the penalties might be, Surer explained: “Anything from a warning to a license revocation. In this case I think it was quite understandable and there will be a mild punishment, if there is anything.” Hans-Joachim Stuck, however, is slightly less forgiving. “When you’re overtaking, misunderstandings can occur. I think Vettel needs to learn this. “With him, the curve was always upwards and now it’s not the case, and he needs to deal with that,” the German legend told the DAPD news agency. As for Vettel’s description of Karthikeyan as a “gherkin”, Stuck insisted: “It’s better than ‘asshole’.” Vettel’s attack, however, was sustained, with Kleine Zeitung newspaper now quoting the Red Bull driver as having said: “Maybe formula one is not the place to learn how to drive.” Stuck responded: “If Sebastian had left more space, it would not have happened. It happens sometimes so it’s a racing incident. “He (Karthikeyan) didn’t do it on purpose and it always takes two.” The HRT driver hit back by calling Vettel a “bully”, and even David Coulthard – a Red Bull team consultant – defended Karthikeyan. “He can’t make his car invisible,” the Scot is quoted as saying by the Mirror. Also defending Karthikeyan was Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg, who told the Indian press this week: “From what I saw, it was not Narain’s fault. “So I don’t really understand why he (Vettel) said all that.” Hukenberg’s Force India teammate Paul di Resta added: “Narain is entitled to do as much on the track in comparison with someone like Vettel. “Both are F1 drivers and are there to represent their teams.” |

Mercedes could speed ahead in MalaysiaComments Off After all the pre-season hype, the Melbourne paddock banter about its clever F-duct system and a strong showing in qualifying, Mercedes failed to shine in last Sunday’s season opener. “Good question,” Michael Schumacher told Bild newspaper at an event this week in Malaysia. “We don’t know yet.” Agreed Finnish commentator and former F1 driver Mika Salo: “It’s going to be interesting. “Malaysia requires a lot more from a car aerodynamically than does Australia. “I am sure McLaren will still be at the front, but Red Bull and Mercedes will probably be closer.” So what happened to Mercedes’ early promise in Australia? “In the race we had some problems, especially with the tyres — they degraded too quickly,” revealed team boss Ross Brawn. But for Sepang, “We have an idea about how we can get it under control,” he added. If that is true, then Sir Jackie Stewart is looking forward to seeing “the old Michael Schumacher” for the first time since he initially retired in 2006. “He is driving well again,” the famous Scot told Kolner Express newspaper, “but so too is Nico Rosberg. “They have a much better car than last year, and Michael is finally showing what he is capable of. “I don’t know if that will be (good enough for) victories, but for sure we will see him again on the podium,” added Stewart. |

Caterham’s midfield bid not dead yetComments Off Caterham’s hopes of pushing into the midfield in 2012 are not dead yet. “We have obviously improved our pace relative to our 2011 speed,” the Malaysian businessman said. “But the teams ahead have also improved, so even though we are closer than this time last year we still have work to do to bridge the gap in qualifying,” he added. Fernandes insists, however, that the race pace shown by Heikki Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov in Melbourne last weekend was “on a par” with some other teams. Former F1 driver and Finnish commentator Mika Salo, however, is not impressed. “The Caterham car is neither fast nor reliable,” he told MTV3. |
