Kovalainen wants midfield push for Caterham(0) Heikki Kovalainen is looking for Caterham to move into the midfield, according to his new management company. Having handled his own career in the wake of Flavio Briatore’s demise, Finn Kovalainen recently signed up with IMG, the sports and entertainment management giant. The 30-year-old has rebuilt his reputation since 2010 in the wake of mixed tenures for top teams Renault and McLaren. According to IMG Motorsport’s head of clients Martin Anayi, Kovalainen is now regarded by formula one team bosses up and down pitlane as among the top best drivers. “He is a great guy,” Anayi is quoted by Finland’s Turun Sanomat newspaper. “Heikki’s potential is obvious and he definitely wants to succeed.” There have been rumblings in the paddock that Kovalainen is disappointed that, despite being consistently the best of F1′s new teams since 2010, Caterham is yet to break into the midfield. “This is only the team’s third season, so there are still some growing paints,” IMG’s Anayi acknowledged. “Heikki has a strong desire to compete, and not just with his teammate Vitaly Petrov. The team’s boss Tony Fernandes wants to get in with the middle group. “This means that the team needs to regularly get into the Q2 stage of qualifying and in the race be aiming for the points,” he insisted. |

‘Banned for life’ Maldonado lucky to be in Monaco(0) A favourite for victory this weekend, Pastor Maldonado is reportedly lucky to be gearing up to race in the Principality at all. Bild newspaper recalls that the Venezuelan, who defied his ‘pay driver’ critics by winning for Williams in Spain two weeks ago, was actually banned after an horror incident on the streets of Monte Carlo seven years ago. Racing in the Renault World Series in 2005, the then 25-year-old ignored yellow flags before striking and severely injuring a marshal. Organisers of the Monaco grand prix reacted by banning Maldonado from the street circuit for life. Germany’s Bild revealed that Maldonado’s wealthy father intervened, promising to pay for the marshal’s recovery and rehabilitation from a broken back. That intervention saved Maldonado’s future formula one career, as no team would hire a regular driver that cannot participate in the sport’s most famous race. Maldonado is therefore a favourite for victory this weekend, with his Williams now acknowledged as arguably the best in the entire field when it comes to slow-speed traction. And in his four seasons of GP2 between 2007 and 2010, Maldonado finished on the podium each time, winning and achieving pole position twice. In 2006, he won in Formula Renault. Last year, in qualifying for his first Monaco grand prix, he qualified his then struggling Williams in eighth place, comfortably ahead of Rubens Barrichello. “He is very good at Monaco,” agreed Barrichello. In the 2011 race, Maldonado was fighting for fifth when he crashed with Lewis Hamilton. “If the last sector in Barcelona is the marker, then the Williams will be unbeatable in Monte Carlo,” Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport quotes Dr Helmut Marko as saying. The breakthrough success in Barcelona has piqued the interest of Maldonado’s native Venezuela, having not had an F1 points scorer since the ignominious Johnny Cecotto in 1983. “My country will be following every second of the next race,” Maldonado is quoted by O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper. “I love street circuits, this one in particular. My style of driving fits perfectly with Monaco. I am ready to get another great result.” |

Brawn returns to paddock, praising Schu ‘quality’(0) Ross Brawn should be firing on all cylinders as he returns to the pitwall in Monaco this weekend. Mercedes’ team principal sat out the recent Spanish grand prix due to illness, but a scarcity of extra information triggered speculation. One rumour was that he is seriously ill, whilst another was that his absence may in fact be due to his German employer’s high-stakes spat with Bernie Ecclestone. The latter theory gained traction since Barcelona, with acting team boss Nick Fry taking a much higher than usual profile, including naming Paul di Resta as a possible 2013 successor for Michael Schumacher. Explaining his absence, Brawn told Bild newspaper: “On the Tuesday before Barcelona I felt unwell so I went to the doctor and then stayed a night in hospital for some tests. “When I got home, I decided on the advice of doctors to give myself a weekend off, to be sure that I am fit for Monaco,” the Briton said. Partly because of Brawn’s deputy Fry’s recent comments, and also due to his paltry points tally and his crash with Bruno Senna, rumours about Schumacher’s future have intensified since Spain. “A lot has been said and written,” acknowledged Brawn, “but we should not forget that we – the team – have let him down in three of the fives races, not delivering the job we should have. “We must do better,” Brawn, who worked closely with Schumacher during the seven time world champion’s ultra successful Ferrari era, added. “We saw Michael’s real quality again in the first race, so it’s for that reason that I believe we will see him on the podium this year.” As for a possible contract extension for the 43-year-old, Brawn insisted: “When the time comes, we will sit down together and talk about the future. “I’m sure it will become clear very quickly in what direction we will go.” |

CVC sells some of F1 stake(0) Even ahead of F1′s Singapore floatation, the sport has some new owners. Reuters, the specialist financial market news agency, said US-based asset managers Waddell and Reed, Blackrock and Norway’s Norges Bank have bought a $1.6 billion stake from existing owners CVC. The report cited a source “with direct knowledge of the matter”. The companies did not immediately comment. It drops CVC’s stake from 63.4 per cent to about 40pc, the source said. We reported on Monday that the Singapore stock exchange approved F1′s plan to raise as much as $3 billion in an initial public offering. Other reports said pre-marketing for the listing, likely to go ahead at the end of June, will begin immediately. “It is not our practice to publicly comment on our dealings with listing aspirants,” said a Singapore bourse spokesman. Some insiders have expressed concern. “Look at the muted first-day response to Facebook’s IPO,” an unnamed banker told the Singapore broadsheet Straits Times. “The F1 listing is not nearly as attractive and long-awaited as that.” |

Williams: Maldonado a future champ, not ‘pay driver’(0) Last Sunday proved that Pastor Maldonado is no mere ‘pay driver’. “If he was a fool, he would not be with us, no matter how much money he brings,” Sir Frank Williams is quoted by Brazil’s Globo Esporte. Venezuelan Maldonado, whose links to the state owned oil company PDVSA and president Hugo Chavez controversially deliver many millions to Williams’ Oxfordshire based team, became F1′s fifth different winner of 2012 last weekend in Spain. It has helped him to shake off the ‘pay driver’ insult, Williams insisting he is now a potential world champion instead. “Without a doubt. He is very fast and makes no mistakes,” the newly 70-year-old Briton said. Williams does, however, acknowledge that Maldonado’s money was a key factor in the decision to sign him. “Yes, it was to some extent,” he said. “I don’t deny that. But he’s also a real driver. He fully deserves to be on the team, with or without money. “The truth is that if you don’t have money, you don’t get to be in formula one,” added Williams. Team shareholder Toto Wolff agrees: “If you want to race in GP2, you need a few million pounds. So, the drivers need not only to be fast and talented, but able to attract the sponsors. “So let’s forget this thing about ‘pay drivers’,” he insisted. Triple world champion Nelson Piquet, however, has some lingering doubts. He ran Maldonado in his own GP2 team some years ago, and this week recalled a driver who was often “too aggressive” and made too many mistakes. “We’re not talking about a guy who shone in his youth, like Nico Rosberg,” said the famous Brazilian, “or someone like Lewis Hamilton, who always had everything he needed thanks to Ron Dennis. “In GP2, when you don’t stand out in your second year, you begin to be doubted. In Maldonado’s case, he only shone in his fourth year. “Perhaps because of this he only made it to formula one as a paying driver, without having anything special, apparently. He was perceived as just a good pilot, but clearly no Alonso. “Now he was at the right place at the right time but he still managed to beat Alonso in Spain as well as another world champion, Kimi (Raikkonen). So hats off to him.” |

Alguersuari says 2013 return ’100 per cent’ sure(0) Jaime Alguersuari has told Spanish publications he is “absolute certain” he will be on the 2013 grid. “This is the best year of my life,” he told Mundo Deportivo, referring to 2012, the year after his young F1 career stalled when he was dropped by backer Red Bull. “I’m only 22,” said Spaniard Alguersuari, who is now Pirelli’s main test driver and a co-commentator for British radio. “I’m in the prime of my life. “It is increasingly clear that what happened with Toro Rosso was not a sporting decision. It was an internal decision and I don’t want to go deeper.” He sounded confident about the future. “It is 100 per cent that I will return in 2013. After being with Pirelli I will have very important knowledge. I knew that this transitionary step was necessary and I’m very happy,” said Alguersuari. “If I had gone (to be test driver) with a team, with all due respect, I’d have no options now. “I am developing a product (Pirelli) that nobody understands but that is vital for formula one — to know the tyres and to understand them. I’m in the right place,” he is quoted by La Vanguardia newspaper. “I chose to be with Pirelli because I knew it would be the most important (element) in formula one. “I know where I am and I know where I’ll be next year,” he insisted. |

Salo believes Bottas to replace Senna soonComments Off Former F1 driver Mika Salo believes his Finnish countryman Valtteri Bottas is being groomed by Williams for a race seat — in 2012. When the Toto Wolff-managed Bottas, 22, was announced as the British team’s 2012 reserve, Sir Frank Williams said he would practice on 15 Friday mornings and then “most likely” be replaced with a “more experienced driver” for the rest of those race weekends. That more experienced driver would ultimately turn out to be Bruno Senna. So with Brazilian Senna struggling so far in 2012, Salo has revealed he senses things could be about to change. “Bottas is incredibly respected by the team,” Salo, now a commentator for the Finnish broadcaster MTV3, said. “When I spoke with Frank Williams, he praised Valtteri to the skies, and said that he belongs in the races. “I asked him when and he said it wouldn’t be long. “Yes, I read between the lines that he means this season,” added Salo. One major spanner in the works, however, is that Senna brings crucial sponsorship to Williams. “It is a difficult situation for Williams, where both drivers bring money,” Salo acknowledged. “But the good thing is that Frank Williams is not a businessman first, he is an old racing driver. He thinks about nothing else but how to make his team successful. “Although Senna is a nice guy, he is not able to drive at the level that he needs to be at.” When asked about Salo’s theory, Bottas commented: “I have no information.” |

No rolling heads as Ferrari tackles new crisis(0) Stefano Domenicali has ruled out responding to Ferrari’s latest crisis with the old ‘rolling heads’ technique. One perception in the paddock is that the fabled Italian team, under intense pressure from the Tifosi and president Luca di Montezemolo, often reacts by emotionally shedding staff, with Aldo Costa and Chris Dyer the obvious recent examples. So, having installed new faces including Pat Fry but still struggling with the latest F2012 project, will boss Domenicali set heads rolling again? “Firing people is the work of two minutes,” he is quoted by Germany’s Auto Bild, “but this would not solve our problem. “Instead I need to find new people who can improve the organisation and push the engineers to improve the car,” added the Italian. In the meantime, there is no silver bullet. “I am not happy with the F2012 project,” he acknowledged. “But if you want to see the glass half full rather than half empty, then Fernando has done a great damage control and, with an improved car, he at least has the possibility to continue to fight for the championship. “We have to improve,” Domenicali insisted. “I have asked my people to wake up and respond, and I will no longer hear excuses.” |

Now di Resta linked with Massa’s Ferrari seat(0) Paul di Resta has emerged as the latest candidate to possibly succeed struggling Felipe Massa at Ferrari. Britain’s Mirror newspaper said the famous Maranello based team has “made enquiries” about the 26-year-old Scot’s current contract with Force India. The speculation follows Red Bull’s closing down of rumours linking Mark Webber with the switch, as Christian Horner and Dietrich Mateschitz suggested the Australian is set to continue beyond his 2012 contract. Ferrari chiefs “are known to be impressed” with di Resta since he moved as the reigning DTM champion to formula one at the end of 2010, the Mirror’s F1 correspondent Byrton Young wrote. “Paul di Resta would be a very good target for Ferrari because (Fernando) Alonso probably has the best toolkit of knowledge and physically is one the best drivers in the world,” triple world champion Sir Jackie Stewart is quoted by the Daily Mail. “Alonso is almost at his peak and to have a young driver such as di Resta be an understudy to Alonso is something I’d consider if I was at Ferrari,” he added. |

Bahrain could get director on F1 board(0) Bahrain, the controversial island Kingdom, could have been central to McLaren’s decision to agree the terms of the next Concorde Agreement. Bahrain’s ruling family, through its investment arm Mumtalakat Holdings, owns half of the famous British team. The Times’ F1 correspondent Kevin Eason quoted a source as saying the link “pushed (McLaren’s) Concorde deal over the line”. In return for signing up, Bahrain reportedly received a “pledge” that last month’s highly contentious grand prix would go ahead. Eason also said it is possible that one of McLaren’s two Bahraini directors, rather than the obvious choice Ron Dennis, could be appointed to the F1 board once the sport is floated on the Singapore exchange. Bernie Ecclestone denied the 2012 Bahrain grand prix and the Concorde Agreement deal were linked. “It was nothing to do with the Bahrain race (going ahead),” the F1 chief executive insisted. “But McLaren liked the deal.” Intriguingly, however, F1′s post-stock market floatation chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe has defended the controversial decision to push ahead with Bahrain last month. “The race was exploited by the opposition in Bahrain, not vice versa,” he told the Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung. “That was not interpreted correctly by the media. “If groups want to exploit sporting events for their interests, then the worst thing you can do is give way.” Brabeck also compared Bahrain to England. “In what countries are there no riots?” he asked rhetorically. “A year ago there were riots in London — should the Olympic Games now be cancelled?” |

Lauda: Red Bull could resume dominance now(0) After Sebastian Vettel’s first win of the season in Bahrain recently, Red Bull could now maintain its grip on 2012. That is the claim of the legendary triple world champion Niki Lauda. Red Bull has been the dominant force since late 2009 and 2010, and Vettel was untouchable last year as he successfully defended his drivers’ championship breakthrough. But four different teams have won so far in 2012, and only the last of them were Red Bull and Vettel, as the energy drink-owned team’s superiority appeared to have waned. After Bahrain, however, Red Bull and Vettel are back, Lauda told Germany’s Auto Bild Motorsport. “In Bahrain, they got the car and the tyres right for the first time, and they won,” said the Austrian. “They will have improved the car further in Mugello, so I see enormous potential for another dominant season,” he added. Lauda acknowledged that the blown diffusers of the past seasons was Red Bull’s “great strength”, and now that is gone. “Nevertheless, Red Bull is the team to beat,” he insisted. |

Pirelli criticism shows Schumacher frustration(0) An obvious tension was evident at Mugello when Pirelli’s Paul Hembery was asked about Michael Schumacher. The seven time world champion had slammed F1′s official supplier after Bahrain, arguing that the 2012 tyres degrade so quickly it makes driving a grand prix car as slow as a safety car. “We haven’t spoken,” Briton Hembery is quoted by Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. “I’ve just read something on the net about the tyres from his teammate Nico Rosberg which is very different.” Asked if Schumacher’s criticism was irritating, he answered: “We built the tyres the way we were asked to. “The FIA, Bernie Ecclestone, even the teams wanted it this way. The spokesman for the teams at the time was Ross Brawn, Schumacher’s team boss. “There have been four different winners in the four races so far, which alone shows that we must have done something right,” Hembery insisted. “As a fan I would be thrilled.” Asked if he can at least understand Schumacher’s frustration, he continued: “The four winners this year have not won by chance. “They were absolutely the best drivers in those races and all of them were faster than their teammates. “I can understand that Michael was frustrated at the last race. Among the four winners so far were two Germans, and then you had Kimi (Raikkonen), who in the fourth race of his comeback is on the podium. “Racers are winners; they’re not happy unless they’re winning.” Hembery denied that tyres have, in 2012, become more important than the cars or drivers. “That’s a misconception,” he insisted. “The driver has a huge impact. “Anyway I’m convinced that at Silverstone at the latest the teams will have the problem under control. Just as they did last year.” Finally, he insisted that Pirelli is not going to make any knee-jerk reactions. “If there are 23 drivers satisfied and only one dissatisfied, then I don’t think we need to change something,” Hembery is quoted by Bild newspaper. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, however, acknowledged a slight frustration. “For the top teams it’s a bit frustrating,” he told La Stampa newspaper, “when it’s difficult to exploit all your potential. “It’s like Real Madrid, Barcelona and AC Milan suddenly playing with the budget of Cesena.” |

Alonso: Ferrari must improve over next races(0) Ferrari’s task is to improve step by step, rather than make a quantum leap in Barcelona next weekend. That is the claim of Spaniard Fernando Alonso, as the famous Italian team disappointed some headline-writers on Tuesday by not launching a ‘B’ car at the Mugello test. “We have to take a step forward in Montmelo, one in Monte Carlo, another in Canada, and so on,” Alonso is quoted by La Stampa, after topping the rain-affected first day of testing on Tuesday with the improved F2012 car. He acknowledged that Ferrari cannot win the 2012 season if the performance of the opening four grands prix is repeated throughout the season. “We have to be qualifying in the top ten, fighting for the top five and having both cars in the points in every race,” he insisted. Asked if he thinks the title is a realistic goal, Alonso said: “We are optimistic.” He said he pushed as hard as he could in Australia, Malaysia, China and Bahrain with a sub-standard car. “It was like walking on a wire a hundred feet up,” said the 2005 and 2006 world champion. “If you do one thing wrong – hit a curb in qualifying or miss a braking point in the race – you’re not in the top ten. “We do not have the fastest car, but with a team like Ferrari, a good car is enough. “I’m not the best in qualifying, or in the rain, or on the street circuits, but I try to be a 9.5 in everything.” |

Sponsorship ‘only problem’ for di Grassi(0) Lucas di Grassi has admitted that even his continuing role at Pirelli is not a ticket back onto the F1 grid. “I’m in the best possible position technically, as the driver with knowledge of the tyres – almost choosing them for next season – it puts me in a very comfortable position. “Of course I want to race again with a team and I’m working on it,” said the 2010 Virgin driver, who was replaced by the now Marussia team with Jerome d’Ambrosio at the end of his only season in F1. “The only problem is the lack of sponsorship,” di Grassi is quoted by Globo. “Let’s hope some Brazilian companies want to come in to support.” Martin Brundle, a former F1 veteran whose son Alex now competes in the lower-tier GP3 series, admitted sponsorship is a problem for aspiring racers. “Drivers are paying as much as $10 million to be a reserve at some teams,” the British commentator told the Daily Mail. “Nine men who raced in F1 last year don’t have a drive any more. As soon as the money runs out, they’re replaced by someone who does have money.” |

Leme: Massa ‘good’ driver in ‘very bad’ Ferrari(0) Well-known Brazilian commentator Reginaldo Leme has defended Felipe Massa, amid the Ferrari driver’s career crisis. Massa’s Ferrari seat hangs in the balance, and according to his boss Stefano Domenicali, he will have to improve in order to simply stay on the F1 grid with any team next year. But Leme has pointed the finger of blame at Ferrari’s struggling F2012 car. “It is very difficult to give an explanation for any driver’s bad phase,” Leme acknowledged on the Redacao Sportv programme. “The car is very bad. The fact that Alonso is always scoring (points) just shows that the Spaniard is the best driver of this generation. “No other driver, however good, could get anything out of that car. “I think that’s what’s happening with Massa,” said Leme. Massa will drive Ferrari’s heavily updated Barcelona-spec car at the Mugello test next Wednesday, while Alonso will drive on Tuesday and Thursday. Turning his attention to the 2012 championship, meanwhile, Reginaldo Leme said consistency is more important than ever before, with four separate teams having won races so far. “Look at Webber — he has been fourth four times and is third in the championship. Hamilton has been third three times and is right in contention.” |
