Spain to host tense drivers’ meeting on Friday(0) A tension has crept into F1 drivers’ relationships, as they look ahead to a fiery meeting at the Barcelona circuit on Friday. Fernando Alonso had given the first hints about the tension when he hit out at Nico Rosberg’s aggressive tactics in Bahrain three weeks ago. And earlier this week, the Spaniard insisted there is not enough “respect” between the drivers when they are jostling for position at grands prix. “Fernando made it pretty clear,” world champion Sebastian Vettel told reporters on Thursday. “He said ‘you have to leave the space — all the time you have to leave the space!’” Rosberg said he is happy if discussions about his driving take place this weekend, but also in the firing line is Lewis Hamilton, who passed the Mercedes driver on the asphalt run-off in Bahrain. “I was surprised Lewis was allowed to keep his position,” said Mark Webber. “I’m sure we’ll talk about it in the drivers’ briefing.” McLaren’s Hamilton insisted he did nothing wrong, but he added: “I’m not really bothered. It’s good to have clarity. “Mark is probably one of the most – if not the most – outspoken individuals here (in F1), so that is the least I expect from him.” Also among the most aggressive – and regularly criticised – drivers is Michael Schumacher, and he insisted that the FIA is fully able to make judgements about incidents. “If it’s not within the rules the FIA would have taken action,” said the seven time world champion, referring to the incidents in Bahrain. “They didn’t and I didn’t see anything wrong either.” |

Schumacher happy criticism started tyre ‘discussion’(0) Michael Schumacher has denied his widely-reported comments about Pirelli’s 2012 tyres were simply about venting “frustration”. “What frustration?” the seven time world champion was quoted as having told German media in Barcelona. Not once but at least twice since the Bahrain grand prix three weeks ago, the Mercedes driver has suggested F1 and Pirelli have not got the balance right with the heavily-degrading tyres seen so far this season. Schumacher insists his intention was to start a conversation. “I am quite happy that we have initiated a discussion about how much influence one or another part should have in formula one,” he told reporters. Fernando Alonso agreed, pointing the finger at the media for “exaggerating” Schumacher’s view. “I read what he said and I don’t see any big problem with that,” said the Ferrari driver. Schumacher also sounded happy that his position triggered a meeting with Pirelli officials at the Mugello test last week. “We had a good meeting,” revealed the German, “to talk about this subject, so I just hope we continue to go in the right direction.” |

Singapore eyes new race deal and F1 floatation(0) The fact F1 has chosen the Singapore exchange for the sport’s high profile floatation does not mean the city-state’s popular floodlit street race is guaranteed. The night event’s existing five year contract runs out this year, although a two-year notice clause in the deal means Singapore should stay on the calendar at least until 2014. On the face of it, a new deal seemed a certainty, given it was Bernie Ecclestone himself who chose Singapore as the location for F1′s forthcoming floatation. “Formula one is known in Singapore, and Asia is thriving. It is a simpler market and not as restrictive,” he said recently. Talks about a new race deal “are underway”, the local Business Times reported in March, “but it is understood that one sticking point is the sanction fee.” An unnamed banker commented: “The Singapore government wants formula one to be listed here and for that to happen, it knows the race has to remain here. “But at the same time, it doesn’t want to pay top dollar again. So the bargaining should continue for some time.” However, the English language newspaper now reports that F1′s floatation plans, and the expiring Singapore race contract, could be entirely unrelated. “We are in the process of negotiating a possible renewal of the (race) agreement and the outcome will be announced once discussions are complete,” said a spokesman for race promoter Singapore GP. Second minister for trade and industry S Iswaran insisted that the mooted floatation will not influence the outcome of the race contract negotiations. And the Singapore tourism board’s Aw Kah Peng added: “You’ve got to see whether the deal is right in every way. “We’re hoping everybody sees value in it and we get a so-called good deal for Singapore, in terms of whether all the numbers can work out and everybody takes home something — a kind of a win-win proposition.” |

CVC to sell 20pc of F1 for $2bnComments Off More details about formula one’s planned stock market floatation have emerged. Bloomberg, the financial news agency, said majority owner CVC is seeking $2 billion by floating “about 20 per cent” of the sport. That would value F1 at about $10 billion. The information was verified by “four people with knowledge of the matter”, the report said. “CVC wants to conduct the sale in Singapore as early as June, and is in discussions with investment banks about its plans, which aren’t final,” Bloomberg added. The report added that Bernie Ecclestone plans to keep his 5.3 per cent stake and will remain F1′s chief executive. |

Brawn admits ‘cheap’ F-duct not easily copiedComments Off Ross Brawn has confirmed reports that Mercedes’ 2012 ‘F-duct’ will not be easily copied by rival teams. We reported on Thursday that while Red Bull and now Ferrari worked quickly to copy Sauber’s clever exhaust solution, they are crying foul over the Mercedes F-duct. Is it because they really believe it breaks the rules, or is the system simply difficult to copy? Red Bull designer Adrian Newey was quoted by Brazilian O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper in Malaysia: “In regard to the aerodynamic (F) duct of the Mercedes, and sending the airflow from the back to the front, it is necessary to review the entire project.” Mercedes team boss Brawn confirmed: “The opposition is so fierce (because) there’s a recognition it’s quite difficult to do.” He rejected the rivals’ arguments about cost, however, insisting Mercedes’ system consists mainly of carbon tubing costing no more than thousands of pounds. “It’s a very simple, cheap system, but not so easy to implement if you haven’t integrated it into your car,” said the Briton. “This is at the heart of the frustration of some of our opponents. If someone could put it on their car easily, I promise you we wouldn’t be having these discussions.” It emerged this week, however, that despite the FIA having consistently sided with Mercedes on the F-duct issue, Lotus’ technical boss James Allison has come up with two new arguments that will be put to Charlie Whiting next week in China. “We would obviously be extremely disappointed if someone was to take a different view,” said Brawn. “The FIA have been fairly consistent over their position so we have faith that they’ll maintain that consistency.” |

No French GP return announcement yetComments Off New media reports have contradicted claims French PM Francois Fillon will on Friday announce the country’s 2013 return to the formula one calendar. Le Parisien newspaper on Thursday said Fillon’s visit to the Paul Ricard circuit on Friday is to confirm the successful end to long negotiations to revive the French grand prix. Those negotiations were for Paul Ricard to annually alternate a race date with Belgium’s fabled Spa Francorchamps. But the French-language RMC insists that Belgium is “not ready for the alternation”. “If France has received a contract to organise a grand prix every other year, this is not the case for the Belgian promoters, who are still waiting for the document to send to the government of Wallonia,” the report read. RMC said the hold-up could be because Spa is having trouble paying its sanctioning fee for this year’s race date in September. The French magazine Sport-Auto agrees, insisting that Fillon “will not announce the return of the grand prix de France on Friday”. “The prime minister will travel to the (Paul Ricard) circuit,” an official close to Fillon is quoted as saying by AFP news agency, but Fillon “will not announce the return of the grand prix to the calendar in 2013″. The official, however, said Bernie Ecclestone as approved “in principle” France’s presence on the calendar every other year, beginning in 2013. But “It (the alternation) will not necessarily be with Belgium,” the report added. In an interview to be published by the Nice-Matin newspaper on Friday, Fillon is quoted as saying a grand prix is crucial to France. “Bernie Ecclestone has just sent us a draft contract,” said the prime minister, “which is the result of negotiations that began several months ago. “We now have a concrete basis for discussions,” he added. |

Mercedes suspects Red Bull using ‘illegal trick’Comments Off Hot on the heels of the new F-duct controversy, Mercedes has turned the heat back onto Red Bull. “The discussion about our system has diverted the focus from the exhaust issue,” he said in Australia. The FIA has clamped down hard on the exhaust-blown diffusers seen throughout the grid last year, but much pre-season chatter focused on some teams’ post-ban 2012 solutions that reportedly fly close to the boundaries of the new rules. But now Germany’s Bild newspaper reports that Mercedes suspects Red Bull is also bending the rules in another area. The report said Mercedes’ sound analysis indicated Renault-powered Red Bull is deploying an “illegal engine trick”, apparently involving the turning on and off of individual cylinders. Mercedes’ competition vice-president Norbert Haug commented: “There is no official protest by us. But there are some questions that we are asking the FIA.” Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko hit back: “No one will find anything. We comply with the rules.” German specialist magazine Auto Motor und Sport, meanwhile, reports that Melbourne winner McLaren currently has the most sophisticated exhaust solution on the 2012 grid. “I wouldn’t say that it’s illegal,” said Peter Sauber, “but it’s borderline.” Teams including Mercedes, Lotus, Toro Rosso and Williams reportedly used much more conservative solutions in Australia. “First we wanted to see what is allowed and what is not,” said Williams engineer Mark Gillan. |

F-duct debate to speed from Australia to MalaysiaComments Off The debate about Mercedes’ controversial new ‘F-duct’ solution looks set to speed across the Indian Ocean. They are arguing that Mercedes’ technical innovation is not legal, but ultimately the 2012 season opener was run without a protest being filed. But the threat is merely on the back-burner, as Boullier and Horner seek urgent talks with the FIA and Mercedes’ Ross Brawn. “We want to sit together at a table with Mercedes and the FIA and find a solution,” Frenchman Boullier is quoted by Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. Separately, Horner agreed: “We are expecting some pretty heated discussions in the next five days.” By then, the F1 circus will be firmly based at the Sepang circuit, for the second round of the season at Sepang. McLaren, the dominant winner of Sunday’s season opening Australian grand prix, is staying out of the debate about the Mercedes concept. “I think the system is legal,” said team boss Martin Whitmarsh. Auto Motor und Sport writer Tobias Gruner explained: “The reason for (Whitmarsh’s) opinion is simple — his engineers at Woking have been hard at work on a copy for some time.” |

Anger as F1 does ‘special deals’ for top teamsComments Off Many team bosses reportedly left the Melbourne paddock angry late on Sunday, amid claims Ferrari and Red Bull have agreed special deals for F1′s future beyond the current Concorde Agreement. The report was reportedly based on a leaked copy of the draft 2013 Concorde Agreement, which according to London’s Telegraph newspaper “could hand Ferrari a direct stake in the sport”. Red Bull, the reigning champions, “also stand to make a huge sum”, the report claimed, adding that the energy drink-owned team as well as Ferrari will be asked to nominate directors for F1′s holding company board. Team boss Christian Horner revealed Red Bull is “in discussions with FOM” about a new Concorde Agreement, adding that talks are “progressing reasonably well”. How the other major teams – like FOTA members McLaren and Mercedes – fit into the picture is unclear at present, but the Times newspaper reports that there are “no seats” at the boardroom table allocated for them. An unnamed senior team executive described the rumoured special deals for Ferrari and Red Bull as “outrageous” and “against every facet of European competition law”. Ferrari declined to comment. Horner added: “We want one (a Concorde Agreement) which reaches into the future … a floatation is really down to the shareholders. “It is not really the teams’ business,” he added. “It is more of a question for Bernie (Ecclestone) or CVC.” Many paddock insiders, however, believe the deals are already done in principle, leading one angry rival team boss to blast: “Formula one stopped being about racing a long time ago”. “There will be an end game to this,” he added. “We just have to figure out what it is and what it means for the people in the teams who want to go racing and not be involved in this kind of thing.” |

Brawn scolds rivals as protest threat lingers onComments Off Ross Brawn has scolded Mercedes’ critics as a protest threat continues to hang over the Australian grand prix. “It’s an option,” boss Eric Boullier is quoted by the Sun. “All I can say is Red Bull and ourselves do not believe the Mercedes system is legal.” Asked about the prospect of an official protest, Mercedes’ Brawn is quoted by Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport: “That would be very disappointing. “If someone believes a car is illegal, then he should protest before the weekend, not afterwards.” Brawn’s argument is that a pre-event protest gives the FIA a chance to respond and, if necessary, request a team make changes to its car before official results are filed. He continued: “We have always informed the FIA about what we are doing. “On Wednesday of this week they took a close look at the system in our garage and found it to be legal. “As long as the FIA has this opinion, we will use the system,” said the Briton. Brawn, in fact, smells diversionary tactics, amid earlier speculation about the legality of some exhaust solutions — notably Red Bull’s. “The discussion about our system has diverted the focus from the exhaust issue,” he agreed. Interestingly, McLaren has stayed out of the debate so far, stating simply on Saturday that it will not join a Lotus and Red Bull protest. Team boss Martin Whitmarsh has now revealed his designers are working on something similar. “We think we know what to do,” Auto Motor und Sport quotes him saying. “In general it is difficult with the limited space in a formula one car to integrate systems at a later date. “But I don’t think we are going to have problems,” added Whitmarsh. |

Lauda: Ecclestone successor talk ‘unnecessary’Comments Off Bernie Ecclestone is not close to lifting his foot from the throttle. It emerged on Monday that David Campbell, the new head of F1′s trackside advertising company Allsport as well as the Paddock Club, had left the role after just a year. He had been tipped as a likely successor to chief executive Ecclestone, and so his departure sparked new speculation about F1′s next ‘supremo’. But Lauda, denouncing the rumours as “unnecessary”, told Austrian television ORF’s Sport am Sonntag: “The end is not in sight for Bernie. “This discussion has been around for ten years, since he turned 70 — everyone saying he won’t be around for much longer. “On the contrary: I met with him just recently, he’s in high spirits and he keeps doing what he is doing for as long as he wants to — and I see absolutely no end,” the Austrian legend added. |

Alguersuari ready for F1 comeback ‘opportunity’(1) Jaime Alguersuari has admitted he was “hurt” by Red Bull’s late decision to oust him from Toro Rosso. In a Spanish-language statement, he admitted the career interruption was “unnecessary”. “At the Brazilian grand prix, my continuity (at Toro Rosso) was confirmed verbally. “After this confirmation by Red Bull and STR, we turned down a very good deal. “A few days later, Toro Rosso sent me to the headquarters of (sponsor) Cepsa, and at a dinner I talked about my relationship with Toro Rosso and Cepsa with a script written at Faenza. “No one has ever explained to me why, having fulfilled the expectations asked of me by the team, improving from 2010 and beating my teammate, I am stopped in December with no time to get a good position in 2012,” said Alguersuari. He insisted, however, that he is not giving up on F1. “I am thinking only of F1,” he said. “I am 21, have played 46 grands prix, I’m not a rookie driver anymore. “Yes to formula one, but not at any price. “I contacted (HRT team boss) Luis Perez-Sala, my friend and former mentor, in December, but we both agreed — HRT does not have a car for me and I cannot spend everything at my age struggling to improve a car that far behind. “Williams? That option never even occurred to me as nowadays they only want drivers who pay. “In January I had discussions with one of the best teams that could be decisive in my future. I was received with great affection and respect and we have opened a path. “For obvious reasons I cannot reveal the nature of our intention, but what I can say is that I will devote myself body and soul to F1 in 2012. “I will prepare myself, with no contractual relationships with anyone, to be ready and available for any opportunity that arises.” |

SingTel denies sealing new Singapore GP dealComments Off Singapore telecommunications company SingTel has denied it has agreed a deal to extend its naming sponsorship of the city-state’s night grand prix. “We agreed terms with SingTel for the renewal of their contract for a further two years,” F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone was quoted earlier by the local media broadcaster MediaCorp. The news had followed rumours during Singapore’s third F1 event in September that SingTel was considering ending its association with the grand prix. “We have companies worldwide that wish to have association in formula one and I always prefer to have local sponsors for the title sponsorship,” added Ecclestone. A spokesman for SingTel told us on Friday: “We are still in discussions with F1 management regarding the sponsorship of the Singapore grand prix.” An industry expert said SingTel would be spending $10-15 million on the deal. “I don’t know what the cost is but I am sure somebody in SingTel must have done a cost-benefit analysis,” said Nervik Singh, chief executive of the marketing communications company Grey Group Asia Pacific. |

No F1 return for Raikkonen in 2011Comments Off Kimi Raikkonen’s manager has admitted the Finn is no longer interested in returning to formula one in 2011. The 2007 world champion had been linked with a comeback next year with the Renault team, but reports this week revealed that talks about extending his deal with the world rally team Citroen are well advanced. “We are no longer looking out for opportunities for formula one,” manager Steve Robertson told Finnish television MTV3. “Kimi seems to be focused on rallying at the moment,” he added. It has been rumoured that an alternative rally team in 2011 for Raikkonen, who currently drives for Citroen with Red Bull sponsorship, is the Monster energy drink-backed Ford team. “We are having discussions with several different teams and I cannot say more,” said Robertson. |

Title challengers asked Chandhok about KoreaComments Off F1 drivers and engineers canvassed Karun Chandhok for his impression of this weekend’s new grand prix venue in Korea, the Indian has revealed. Chandhok, 26, contested the first half of 2010 with the HRT team, and was later deployed by Red Bull to the new – then incomplete – Yeongam layout for a demonstration in an F1 car. So, as the only driver in the world to have completed real laps in Korea, Chandhok revealed to Reuters that title contenders Mark Webber and Jenson Button have asked him about the circuit’s nuances. “You’d expect people to be calling, really,” said Chandhok, who is not travelling to Korea this week. The report said technical people from various teams, and his former teammate Bruno Senna, also asked Chandhok questions about his laps in Korea. “To be fair, a lot of people have very good simulators and they have a lot of faith in their simulators and simulation software,” he explained. “I think a lot of them tend to believe that more than anything else.” But he said Australian Webber spoke to him about Korea. “Obviously he was very curious to see what I thought about the place and what the circuit was like,” said Chandhok. And a more recent discussion was with Button. “We were chatting about this and that and he was quite curious about Korea,” added the Indian, revealing that the McLaren driver asked him about the camber of the corners. “I think some of that stuff is not so apparent until you get there. So he had questions about that sort of stuff,” said Chandhok. |
