Timo Glock:Marussia must focus on basics before KERSComments Off Marussia needs to get the basics right before worrying about KERS, Timo Glock explained on the eve of the 2012 season. Last year, the Cosworth-powered team was soundly beaten by its closest rival Team Lotus, who as well as changing its name to Caterham for 2012 has also added a Red Bull KERS system to its Renault-powered package. “On the subject of KERS, it is of course a disadvantage not to have it,” Glock is quoted by the SID news agency. “But we have said that our focus is right to first get rid of the four seconds of aerodynamic deficit, before we worry about the money and the manpower we need for five tenths with the KERS,” added Glock. “We have to get the foundation right first,” said the almost 30-year-old. |

Sauber: No ‘revolution’ seen on 2012 grid yet(1) After the double diffusers, F-ducts and blown exhausts of the past few seasons, Peter Sauber is sure a “revolutionary invention” has not yet been seen in 2012. “The big question,” agreed team boss Sauber, “is whether anyone has come up with another revolutionary invention after the banning of the adventurous engine control (of 2011). “So far it doesn’t look like it,” he wrote in a column for Blick newspaper. “At the rear of the cars there are different solutions for the guiding of the exhaust gases, but this was not unexpected,” added Sauber. Another point of note at Jerez was the obvious visual difference between the radical ‘step’ noses and the much more conventional solution on the McLaren. “It means nothing else than that they are using a less-high chassis,” Sauber reported. “This is interesting because of the apparent aerodynamic disadvantage. “But equally clear is that McLaren would not have done it if they had not found another way to generate the corresponding downforce,” he insisted. |

Horner promises no team orders for title finaleComments Off Christian Horner has answered “no” as to whether Red Bull will be using team orders in the three-race run to the 2010 world championship. Separated by 14 points, both leader Mark Webber and his young teammate Sebastian Vettel are both in the running for their first drivers’ titles. Flavio Briatore has been recently highly critical of the team’s philosophy of equality, but boss Horner insists he will not be favouring Webber over Vettel. “What else should he (Briatore) say as Mark’s manager?” Horner is quoted on Friday by F1′s official website. “My answer is a clear ‘no’. “Of course, I can imagine that Flavio would prefer it if we go the Ferrari way and put our efforts behind only one driver, but that would be wrong, as both are right in the middle of the fight for the title. “The only thing we expect from them is that they don’t hamper each other,” added the Briton. Horner said it is a “luxury” for Red Bull to have two competitive drivers vying for the title, but it is feared their fight could allow Fernando Alonso to pick up the pieces and his third drivers’ title. He admitted that it is not necessary to “dig too much into psychoanalysis to understand that if two guys are fighting for the most prestigious title in motor sport then tension is part of the game”. Horner described their Istanbul crash earlier this year as a “huge challenge”, leaving a big task now so that “neither feels disadvantaged”. But both Webber and Vettel are still able to be champion, he insisted. “I promise that the team will not interfere in the race for the title,” said Horner. |

Dani Pedrosa “The championship is still open”Comments Off A second is that as a victory for Dani Pedrosa. Speaking of those seven points are recovered against Lorenzo Aragon in Motorland, they can still hope for a comeback difficult but not impossible in the next five races, when to give his best to recover as many as 56 points … “I’m quite satisfied with second place though, obviously, I would have liked to win in front of my home crowd, “said Pedrosa. “I took a big risk at the first corner, I lost several positions and it took me a while to recover and find myself behind Stoner. Then between us was a “5 and the race pace was the same as it was difficult to overcome this disadvantage. Towards the end, unfortunately I started having problems with the tires started to lose grip at this point I said to myself “Okay, okay.” On the weekend we had more problems than others to regard the tires, but in any event the second place is good and the championship is still open although it will be difficult to recover on Lorenzo. Now we are ready to race at Motegi, Honda’s home race, I thank them and my team because they’re working very hard and now we fast every weekend. “ |

Valentino Rossi “I’m rather missing the last step”Comments Off At the weekend where it will be officially unveiled its future, Valentino Rossi started in the best way. In Brno in the opening round of tests appeared immediately in command of the standings, finishing with the 3rd time without being able to replicate, because of the rain, the reference of Jorge Lorenzo. The six-tenths of a disadvantage not worried, partly because his physical condition has improved considerably since the last race. “Overall I’m happy, it was a good session and I found myself immediately at ease with the bike,” says Rossi. “I must say that after a few laps I felt some pain in the shoulder and right leg, but overall I’m happy because compared to Laguna Seca my physical condition has improved, so that I can do more forcefully on the shoulder cornering and braking . Fitness (almost) OK, how his Yamaha YZR M1? To answer must wait until tomorrow hoping for good weather and two rounds of tests on asphalt completely dry. “I was leading for most of the session working on the development of the bike. I am only sorry for the rain, we could do that final step to further improve, but hopefully it will be possible tomorrow, “concluded the nine-time World Champion. |

Sauber undecided about KERS in 2011Comments Off Sauber has not decided whether or not to run KERS in 2011. With the car weight limit increasing next year and the weight distribution to be fixed, Force India’s chief operating officer Otmar Szafnauer said this week that there is “no other option” than to use the energy recovery technology. But Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport had said that while the bigger teams are all planning to go with KERS, the new teams are almost certainly not. And the publication said it is not clear if middle of the grid teams like Sauber and Toro Rosso will use KERS next year. Hinwil based Sauber is still developing the C29, but work has also begun on the team’s 2011 car. But technical director James Key said the KERS decision has not yet been taken. “It is certainly a possibility,” he said, “but we are still weighing it up and will decide later on.” Team boss Peter Sauber said recently that Sauber will definitely not be using the system developed and raced in 2009 by former owner BMW because it is “air-cooled with far too many disadvantages”. If Sauber was to opt for KERS in 2011, it is believed the team would buy a Magneti Marelli system for 1 million euros through customer engine supplier Ferrari. |

Safety car rules tweaked after Ferrari furoreComments Off F1′s safety car rules have been tweaked in the wake of the Valencia controversy. The 12 teams met at Silverstone ahead of the British grand prix to discuss the incidents that so enraged Ferrari and its supporters. The rule tweak, agreed between the teams and race director Charlie Whiting, addresses Ferrari’s complaint that Fernando Alonso was disadvantaged by following the rules and not overtaking the safety car on the Spanish street circuit. McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, received a drive-through penalty for overtaking the safety car that was applied so late he was still able to finish the race in second place. The result of the Silverstone meeting is that the safety car rules remain effectively the same, despite some pressure to see the pits closed when the safety car is circulating. Instead, it has been agreed that drivers who are not being slowed by the safety car will have to drive on track at the same speed as the Bernd Maylander-driven Mercedes gullwing. Previously, drivers not being immediately slowed by the safety car during the safety car period only had to keep within 120 per cent of a flying laptime. In Valencia, the rule tweak would have meant Hamilton would not only have been penalised for overtaking the safety car, but also not able to negate the drive-through by driving around the track any faster than Maylander. In the meeting, Whiting also promised the teams that efforts will be made to issue penalties like Hamilton’s faster in the future. In Valencia, Hamilton’s penalty was delayed because the race director did not request the steward investigation until after the Mark Webber crash was dealt with. But in future, potential penalties will be passed immediately to the attention of the stewards, while the race director can continue to focus on a Webber-like incident. Moreover, because the arrival of crucial evidence about the Hamilton incident also slowed down the in-race investigation, there will now be cameras constantly monitoring the safety car lines 1 and 2. There will also be trackside markings that show the location of the safety car lines, so that a driver cannot argue he did not notice the lines from his driving position. |

Alonso regrets: “I react emotionally”Comments Off Two days have passed after the contested races in Valencia and Fernando Alonso’s mood has been heated then cooled. In his blog on the official Ferrari site now he regrets his remarks, which he angrily criticized immediately after the race the stewards and the FIA accused of manipulation. Meanwhile, he sees what happened now with a clear head. “At the time I reacted emotionally and in such a situation is all too quick to propose a sound and says things can be misinterpreted and may give cause to suspicion – something that was not my intention at all,” admits the Ferrari Star one. “I understand of course that the race has a difficult job and that they must make decisions that are not easy.” was “What I wanted a driver who respects the rules as we were at a disadvantage in this situation, unfortunately, more than those who have broken, even if they were given a penalty,” continued Alonso. He refers here not to a specific driver (Lewis Hamilton, editor’s note), says the Spaniard, “This is a basic thing and I think we should talk about it calmly, to ensure that such something does not happen again. ” He was delighted that the FIA also reacted promptly and an extraordinary meeting of the sporting working group meet as Alonso added: “I am confident even sure that all the contentious issues can be addressed in detail here.” Even if the result of Valencia was not what Ferrari had hoped for, “it has left no irreparable damage,” Alonso continued. “It is true that our backlog is at the top now grown to 29 points, but we have not even reached the mid-season. We lack only a little more than a victory, is therefore still open to everything.” was one of the main points of the race from Sunday, however, that Mark Webber his serious accident, “the fear was spectacular and scary”, has survived virtually unscathed, says Alonso: “This shows once again that the work initiated by the FIA at the Security is absolutely essential and that in this field of sport should never be complacent. “ |

Brundle: Hamilton has not hurt FerrariComments Off In addition to Mark Webber’s spectacular crash, it was for many observers, the issue of the race weekend in Valencia: Lewis Hamilton obsolete in a safety car period, the medical car and it occupies just 13 laps later with a drive-through penalty. Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso then assumed the race, they have manipulated the Grand Prix of Europe, because Hamilton had in his view, by the late penalty to no disadvantage. According to former racing driver Martin Brundle, however, these accusations without any basis. “Alonso’s emotions have common sense superimposed,” former McLaren driver writes in his’ BBC’ column. Hamilton was by his maneuvers Ferrari ultimately not harmed. Instead, the Italians might as well be upset with race winner Sebastian Vettel. |

Whitmarsh plays down chance of three-car teamsComments Off Jun.9 (GMM) F1 is unlikely to consider three-car team entries while the grid is already healthily subscribed. That is the insistence of FOTA chairman Martin Whitmarsh, amid Ferrari’s continuing enthusiasm about entering a third Maranello built car for a driver like Valentino Rossi. Rossi, however, broke his leg in a MotoGP practice crash last Saturday, and now Whitmarsh has revealed that the issue of three cars has not recently been discussed by the F1 teams association. “It’s really an idea if you get a reduced number of teams,” said the McLaren boss. Ferrari is a staunch critic of F1′s struggling new teams, but Whitmarsh insists that FOTA wants the entire current grid to “develop and flourish”. “McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes would all probably be happy to have a third car, but I think in fairness to the smaller teams it would only disadvantage them further,” he explained. However, if the big teams were able to enter third cars, Whitmarsh acknowledges that it would be an opportunity for celebrity drivers like Rossi, Sebastien Loeb and NASCAR’s Jimmie Johnson. “So in the event that the number of teams drops below 10 – and at the moment we’re hoping it is 13 next year – it would be a fantastic opportunity,” added Whitmarsh. |

Reporter spots new diffuser on Ferrari’s F10Comments Off A development of Ferrari’s rear double-diffuser was spotted in the Istanbul pitlane. The F10 was wheeled out of the garage so that international photographers could see the engine cover logo celebrating the team’s 800th grand prix this weekend. But a reporter for Spain’s AS newspaper also spotted an upgraded diffuser with enlarged elements “not seen at other races”. “We know that in Barcelona we had a disadvantage in the total downforce generated by the car and have worked on this issue,” Fernando Alonso is quoted as saying. But the Spanish driver is not expecting Ferrari to catch the dominant Red Bulls this weekend. “In Barcelona they were almost a second faster than the others, and in the three weeks since it is impossible to have recovered that difference,” he is quoted by El Pais newspaper. Rosberg not disappointed with new car switchComments Off Nico Rosberg insists he is not disappointed with the reversion to the newer long-wheelbase Mercedes car for the forthcoming Turkish grand prix. After Michael Schumacher struggled with the original short-wheelbase car earlier in 2010, he was the team’s pacesetter in Barcelona, where a longer-wheelbase was introduced along with other car developments. But for the twisty curves of Monaco, the original car is being used once again, and Rosberg has once again been in front of his famous teammate. But for F1′s next stop in Istanbul, it has been confirmed that the newer car will be back in action. Rosberg, however, insists it will not disadvantage him. “Michael and I have the same driving style,” he told Germany’s Bild-Zeitung. “Even if Ross Brawn wanted to make a car that only worked for Michael, it would also work for me,” insisted Rosberg. Rookie lineup ‘a disadvantage’ for HRT – KollesComments Off
May 3 (GMM) HRT’s inexperienced driver lineup is a “disadvantage” for a new formula one outfit, team boss Colin Kolles has admitted. Of the three new teams on the grid in 2010, Hispania is the only one that arrived in Bahrain for its grand prix debut with two rookies. Kolles told Finland’s Turun Sanomat: “I am pleased with what (Bruno) Senna and (Karun) Chandhok have done, but it is useless to deny that their lack of F1 experience is a disadvantage at this point.” HRT has now signed former Super Aguri and Spyker driver Sakon Yamamoto, who also tested with Renault in 2008, to drive on the Fridays of grand prix weekends. But even the 27-year-old Japanese is bringing sponsor funding to his cockpit. “We could not afford to hire drivers like Jarno Trulli or Heikki Kovalainen, as Lotus did,” Kolles insists. “We have to take drivers who are good but who also come with budgets,” added the Romanian-born German, who said Yamamoto will take HRT forward “because he has more experience than Bruno and Karun”. The team has announced that some new parts will be on the F110 car in Barcelona, but Kolles admits that “much work is needed to make our cars faster”. The end of the Dallara chassis contract has complicated the development process for the 2010 car, but Kolles said HRT will shortly announce a deal with a wind tunnel so it can develop its own aerodynamic pieces. “Our competitors have quite a lead on us but I still believe that in the end Hispania will be the best of the new teams,” he insisted. |
