Brawn returns to paddock, praising Schu ‘quality’(0) Ross Brawn should be firing on all cylinders as he returns to the pitwall in Monaco this weekend. Mercedes’ team principal sat out the recent Spanish grand prix due to illness, but a scarcity of extra information triggered speculation. One rumour was that he is seriously ill, whilst another was that his absence may in fact be due to his German employer’s high-stakes spat with Bernie Ecclestone. The latter theory gained traction since Barcelona, with acting team boss Nick Fry taking a much higher than usual profile, including naming Paul di Resta as a possible 2013 successor for Michael Schumacher. Explaining his absence, Brawn told Bild newspaper: “On the Tuesday before Barcelona I felt unwell so I went to the doctor and then stayed a night in hospital for some tests. “When I got home, I decided on the advice of doctors to give myself a weekend off, to be sure that I am fit for Monaco,” the Briton said. Partly because of Brawn’s deputy Fry’s recent comments, and also due to his paltry points tally and his crash with Bruno Senna, rumours about Schumacher’s future have intensified since Spain. “A lot has been said and written,” acknowledged Brawn, “but we should not forget that we – the team – have let him down in three of the fives races, not delivering the job we should have. “We must do better,” Brawn, who worked closely with Schumacher during the seven time world champion’s ultra successful Ferrari era, added. “We saw Michael’s real quality again in the first race, so it’s for that reason that I believe we will see him on the podium this year.” As for a possible contract extension for the 43-year-old, Brawn insisted: “When the time comes, we will sit down together and talk about the future. “I’m sure it will become clear very quickly in what direction we will go.” |

D’Ambrosio linked with Massa’s 2012 seat(0) Jerome d’Ambrosio is the latest name linked with struggling Felipe Massa’s Ferrari race seat. While Mark Webber or Sergio Perez are the Maranello team’s more likely longer term solutions, Ferrari may be looking simply for a stop-gap solution, having reportedly run out of patience for Brazilian Massa’s lack of pace and results. The French sports daily L’Equipe named d’Ambrosio, the Belgian driver who lost his Virgin/Marussia seat at the end of last season. He is managed by Eric Boullier, and now Lotus’ reserve driver. Also named as potential substitutes for Massa in recent days were Nico Hulkenberg, Paul di Resta and Kamui Kobayashi. But, according to L’Equipe, d’Ambrosio “has the advantage of being immediately available, giving Ferrari time to find a more permanent solution” for 2013. Also ready to step in now is Adrian Sutil, the former Force India driver who is putting his career back together after the Eric Lux assault affair. “I have no money to offer,” the German is quoted as saying. “After five seasons, people know what is my level. I want a normal salary, that’s all.” |

Di Resta plays down Ferrari rumours(0) Paul di Resta has played down media speculation linking him with a high-profile switch to Ferrari. The reports suggested the famous Italian marque has been impressed with the Scot’s one and a half seasons with Force India and sees him as a potential replacement for the struggling Felipe Massa. “I have not heard anything about it,” the 26-year-old, who is managed by Anthony Hamilton, said in Barcelona. “I am just concentrating on the job I have to do for Force India. That is my only focus,” he is quoted by the Scottish Sun newspaper. However, di Resta is widely regarded as having outshone his highly-rated teammate Nico Hulkenberg so far in 2012. But he denies he is the number one driver. “(There is) equal opportunity and everybody seizing his chances,” di Resta told F1′s official website. As for his dominant position over Hulkenberg, he insisted: “That would be for Nico to answer.” Hulkenberg said on Thursday: “The first four races have been quite tough but I’m looking forward — I’m bedding in well with the team.” |

Now di Resta linked with Massa’s Ferrari seat(0) Paul di Resta has emerged as the latest candidate to possibly succeed struggling Felipe Massa at Ferrari. Britain’s Mirror newspaper said the famous Maranello based team has “made enquiries” about the 26-year-old Scot’s current contract with Force India. The speculation follows Red Bull’s closing down of rumours linking Mark Webber with the switch, as Christian Horner and Dietrich Mateschitz suggested the Australian is set to continue beyond his 2012 contract. Ferrari chiefs “are known to be impressed” with di Resta since he moved as the reigning DTM champion to formula one at the end of 2010, the Mirror’s F1 correspondent Byrton Young wrote. “Paul di Resta would be a very good target for Ferrari because (Fernando) Alonso probably has the best toolkit of knowledge and physically is one the best drivers in the world,” triple world champion Sir Jackie Stewart is quoted by the Daily Mail. “Alonso is almost at his peak and to have a young driver such as di Resta be an understudy to Alonso is something I’d consider if I was at Ferrari,” he added. |

Sauber reveals brush with Bahrain firebombsComments Off Sauber has become the second formula one team to reveal a brush with Bahrain’s civil unrest. Force India was involved in a Molotov cocktail attack earlier this week, resulting in two team members returning to the UK and Nico Hulkenberg and Paul di Resta sitting out the second practice session on Friday. Now, the Swiss team Sauber has revealed it saw masked protesters throwing petrol bombs whilst returning from the circuit to their Manama hotel late on Thursday. “At 20.50 the 12 mechanics, being on that minibus to the Novotel, noticed fire on the medial strip of the highway,” said spokesman Hanspeter Brack. “On the opposite lane there was no traffic. The team members saw a few masked people running from there over to their lane where a bottle was burning as well.” No one was hurt. F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone on Friday played down the latest drama, accusing reporters of “wanting a story” and offering to ride in the cars with the frightened Force India team members if they are afraid of Bahrain’s night. |

Force India to limit running for anxious staffComments Off Force India on Friday will run a shortened second practice session in Bahrain. The BBC reports that staff members, some of whom were caught up in a Molotov cocktail attack earlier this week, want to pack up early in order to avoid travelling back to their hotels in darkness. Deputy team boss Bob Fernley confirmed to Reuters that Nico Hulkenberg and Paul di Resta will therefore run limited second practice programmes, and may skip the session altogether. Other reports quote him as saying Force India will however take part in qualifying and the race. Respected British commentator and former grand prix driver Martin Brundle, however, thinks the island Kingdom has “never looked better”. “Clearly, there is some trouble out there,” he told Sky, “but I’ve not seen any of it. “Some journalists have gone looking for it and unfortunately the trouble found Force India. “My view is this: F1 can’t run away from this,” Brundle insisted. |

Fearful Force India could skip second practice in BahrainComments Off Force India might skip Friday’s second practice session in Bahrain. Two of the Silverstone based team’s staff members returned to the UK earlier this week after a Molotov cocktail incident. The BBC is reporting rumours that other members are the team are now refusing to travel from the circuit back to their hotels after dark. That would mean Paul di Resta and Nico Hulkenberg will not be able to practice in the second 90 minute session scheduled for 2pm local. The BBC said the rumour ties in with Force India’s drivers unusually running soft tyres in the initial practice session on Friday. And F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone called the team’s deputy principal Bob Fernley off the pitwall during the initial practice session for talks. Force India said it “wouldn’t want to comment”. |

Bianchi to begin Friday duties in ChinaComments Off Jules Bianchi will kick off his season of Friday practice duties this weekend in China. Despite remaining under contract to Ferrari’s development programme, the Frenchman was signed to be reserve driver at Force India this year. The team said 22-year-old Bianchi will practice during “a minimum of nine” Friday sessions this season. The first will be in Shanghai late this week, according to the French weekly Le Journal du Dimanche. The report said Bianchi, who will also race in the Renault World Series in 2012, will take over Paul di Resta’s Mercedes-powered car in the initial free practice session beginning at 10am local on Friday in China. “I hope it (the role) will put me in a strong position to one day move into a race seat,” Bianchi said in January. |

Vijay’s Vision After two races the 2012 season appears to have all the ingredients needed to serve up a spectacular year of racing. Already the fans have enjoyed two thrilling races and the intensity of the competition across the grid is sure to capture everybody’s attention. I said last year that the competition in the midfield was close, but this year it seems to be even more so with the majority of the grid capable of fighting for points. It’s a good situation for Formula One, but it also means points are harder to come by. It’s encouraging that we have scored points in both races and that will be our aim once again in China. I have to congratulate Paul and Nico on their excellent drives in Malaysia. They are only in their second full seasons of Formula One, but they both showed their maturity in the difficult conditions. At times Paul was one of the fastest cars on the circuit, excelling in the conditions, and it’s clear that we can expect another strong season from him. I was also delighted to see Nico pick up his first points with us after such a strong showing. In terms of car development, the factory at Silverstone continues to work at full capacity to improve our performance. The first two races have given us a great deal of information to work with and we will put it to good use in the coming races. Vettel risks penalty for ‘middle finger’ tiradeComments Off The FIA could sanction F1′s reigning back-to-back world champion for his behaviour during the recent Malaysian grand prix. Before calling backmarker Narain Karthikeyan a “gherkin” and “idiot” in the wake of their collision, Sebastian Vettel was captured by his on-board camera twice displaying his middle-finger to the Indian driver. “I think he’s highly frustrated because he’s having a tough season,” Karthikeyan told the Deccan Chronicle on Wednesday. “It’s completely unprofessional to blame me for the incident. The derogatory remark only goes to show him in bad light. “Just because he has a good car, he can’t call others an idiot,” Karthikeyan continued. “I have won races in all the previous single-seater championships I have participated in so I don’t need a certificate from Vettel.” Reports in Germany, including in the Kolner Express, Bild and Die Welt newspapers, claim that Red Bull driver’s behaviour may have breached the new stricter code of conduct introduced by FIA president Jean Todt. The FIA has been contacted for comment. “He has breached the code of conduct,” former F1 driver Marc Surer told Germany’s Sky television. “You sign it when you get the license and then you have to behave correspondingly. “Any behaviour that hurts other people or the sport is an offense,” added the Swiss. Asked what the penalties might be, Surer explained: “Anything from a warning to a license revocation. In this case I think it was quite understandable and there will be a mild punishment, if there is anything.” Hans-Joachim Stuck, however, is slightly less forgiving. “When you’re overtaking, misunderstandings can occur. I think Vettel needs to learn this. “With him, the curve was always upwards and now it’s not the case, and he needs to deal with that,” the German legend told the DAPD news agency. As for Vettel’s description of Karthikeyan as a “gherkin”, Stuck insisted: “It’s better than ‘asshole’.” Vettel’s attack, however, was sustained, with Kleine Zeitung newspaper now quoting the Red Bull driver as having said: “Maybe formula one is not the place to learn how to drive.” Stuck responded: “If Sebastian had left more space, it would not have happened. It happens sometimes so it’s a racing incident. “He (Karthikeyan) didn’t do it on purpose and it always takes two.” The HRT driver hit back by calling Vettel a “bully”, and even David Coulthard – a Red Bull team consultant – defended Karthikeyan. “He can’t make his car invisible,” the Scot is quoted as saying by the Mirror. Also defending Karthikeyan was Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg, who told the Indian press this week: “From what I saw, it was not Narain’s fault. “So I don’t really understand why he (Vettel) said all that.” Hukenberg’s Force India teammate Paul di Resta added: “Narain is entitled to do as much on the track in comparison with someone like Vettel. “Both are F1 drivers and are there to represent their teams.” |

Paffett called up as Force India reserveComments Off Gary Paffett is next in line for a Force India race seat this weekend in Australia. Force India has therefore asked McLaren, its technical partner, for help. With Pedro de la Rosa now at HRT, Briton Paffett is the famous British team’s new official reserve driver. He has already been in action this weekend, demonstrating McLaren’s 2011 car to the crowds at Albert Park on Thursday. And Paffett, 30, will step into Force India’s car during the race weekend, should bad fortune befall the team’s regular drivers Nico Hulkenberg or Paul di Resta. “I’m happy to be available for Force India for this weekend,” said the DTM driver. He will not participate in Friday morning practice. “Of course, it’s unlikely that I will be called up and hopefully it won’t happen, but it’s nice to know that the team thought of me,” said Paffett. |

Force India not ready for 2012 podiumsComments Off Nico Hulkenberg has played down claims Force India could be a podium-getting ‘dark horse’ of the 2012 season. German Hulkenberg is returning to F1 with Silverstone based Force India this season, after being ousted by Williams at the end of 2010. Asked what his goals are by Germany’s Sport1, the 24-year-old answered: “First I want to establish myself (in F1), after the bad experience of 2010. “A couple of points would also be great,” he smiled. Some pundits, however, are predicting that podiums may be possible for Hulkenberg – the 2010 Brazil GP pole sitter – and his highly rated teammate Paul di Resta. “Clearly this is a dream,” the German admitted. “But at the moment I don’t think that’s our goal. Of course if we should be in that situation in a race, then we will try everything for it.” Hulkenberg conceded that Force India is not ready to challenge F1′s frontrunners. “I think Red Bull have their nose in front again, and McLaren are the closest to them. I have no idea what Ferrari are doing at the moment and Mercedes is also difficult to assess because they haven’t shown much.” He said countryman Sebastian Vettel’s crown, however, may be challenged. “It’s clear that he is the man to beat,” said Hulkenberg. |

Pundits agree Ferrari struggling in 2012Comments Off Former Jordan and Jaguar designer Gary Anderson has singled out Lotus and Force India to impress in 2012. He admitted, however, that the team may have been experimenting with setup, as the new Red Bull and McLaren have so far been “model students” in terms of handling. Force India’s Paul di Resta, meanwhile, did not look impressive on the end-of-day timesheet, but Anderson said he was pleasantly surprised with the long-run consistency of the VJM05. He said both di Resta and Nico Rosberg were both circulating at the same time with medium times, and the Force India was faster than the Mercedes, which was suffering from heavily-degrading tyres. And Anderson added: “Lotus had to miss last week in Barcelona, but today they could confirm their good impression of Jerez. “The car is fully sorted and the laptimes are consistent.” Ferrari, however, is another matter. “They are still using the coloured (aerodynamic) paint, which for me is a sign that the engineers don’t understand what is happening with the airflow. “And just before the start of the season, that’s pretty alarming.” Also trackside on Thursday was Sky commentator Martin Brundle, who confirmed Anderson’s view that the new McLaren looks “very good”. Similarly, he added: “The Ferrari looks a bit of a handful, especially when it’s coming out of a corner trying to put the power down. “It doesn’t look as bad as the McLaren did last year, but they’ve got some issues — there’s no doubt about it.” Brundle also agreed with Anderson that, unlike the cakewalk of 2011, Red Bull could be set for a close fight this season. “You can see Mark Webber working quite hard at the wheel,” said the former McLaren driver, “so I can understand why some of my mates in the paddock are saying it’s looking really close.” |
