McLaren set to race new higher nose in Spain(0) McLaren looks set to run a higher nose this weekend in Spain. Last week, at the very end of the Mugello test, test driver Oliver Turvey debuted a new front wing that featured a conspicuously higher nose tip. McLaren, the early 2012 frontrunner but having struggled recently in Bahrain, was the only notable team this year to ignore the new design trend for ugly ‘stepped’ front noses, introduced as arguably the best solution to new nose-height safety regulations. The MP4-27′s new nose does not feature a step element, but the tip is notably higher than its predecessor. “Nowadays it is quite a critical part of the car, you’re looking to find very small improvements,” team boss Martin Whitmarsh said on Wednesday. As for whether the new nose will be seen in Barcelona, he confirmed: “You may well see it again, yes. “There’s a reasonable chance you’ll see it on Sunday.” |

di Grassi: Pirelli situation ‘good for F1′(0) Pirelli test driver Lucas di Grassi has defended the F1 tyre supplier following Michael Schumacher’s criticism. Schumacher attacked the Italian marque’s 2012 product after the Bahrain grand prix, complaining that the tyres wear so fast that drivers often have to take corners at half-pace like the safety car. “In some ways he’s right,” Brazilian di Grassi, who along with Jaime Alguersuari tests tyres for Pirelli, is quoted by Globo. “You can’t go at 100 per cent all the time because the current tyres are designed to highlight the strategy during the races. “Drivers have to think more about what part of the race to make best use of the tyres,” said the former Virgin driver. Di Grassi, 27, credited Pirelli for the exciting races seen so far in 2012. “The championship is very balanced, which is good for everyone, especially the public,” he said. “It’s partly because Pirelli has been able to use the data it collected last year and make good decisions for this year,” added di Grassi. Also with a view contrary to Schumacher’s is the seven time world champion’s own teammate, Nico Rosberg. “F1 has become more interesting,” said the Shanghai winner, “as everything has been shaken up — it’s much better than the same cars and drivers always driving away from the front,” he is quoted by German media. “Due to the tyre situation, the races have been very varied, which is an extraordinary challenge but also very exciting. And we have to get used to it,” added Rosberg. |

‘B’ Ferrari not ready yet(0) Ferrari will not run all of its planned car improvements at the Mugello test this week. “My information is that the new single seater is not ready,” reported Livio Oricchio, the correspondent for O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper. There has been speculation that, following Ferrari’s troubled start to the new championship with its F2012 car, the changes for the forthcoming Barcelona race will be so sweeping that it might be called a “B” version. But technical director Pat Fry reportedly told Oricchio that Ferrari designers are “staying with the (current) front suspension”; a reference to the Maranello based team’s innovative use of pullrod technology this year. And the well-informed journalist Dimitris Papadopoulos adds that, even though the Mugello-spec Ferrari will have a new nose, sidepods and wings, “there will be no new chassis”. |

Force India, Ecclestone, deny Bahrain GP boycottComments Off Force India deputy boss Bob Fernley has dismissed reports the Silverstone based team could pull out of the controversial Bahrain grand prix. Two members of the team were allowed to return to Europe this week following a Molotov cocktail attack en route from the Sakhir circuit to the hotel. There were high-level meetings involving Force India on Thursday, sparking speculation the entire team could follow its frightened members back to the UK. But Fernley, admitting that security has been ramped up after the incident, is quoted by Express newspaper: “We are definitely taking part, that is decided.” Bahrain’s information affairs authority also released a statement featuring quotes by Bernie Ecclestone. “I have no knowledge of any teams planning to withdraw from the race and we are all looking forward to racing in Bahrain,” the F1 chief executive said. According to Telegraph correspondent Tom Cary, however, another incident like the one involving Force India this week could force F1 to change its decision to go ahead with the race. “If that happened again and someone was injured then that’s the nightmare scenario for organisers as it might push the teams over the edge,” he said. Many drivers, like Kimi Raikkonen, have said the situation is normal this weekend in Bahrain, but Cary does not agree. “Normally there would be PR events in town, you know, ‘meet the fans’ and that sort of thing but certainly as far as I’m aware there aren’t any of those happening,” he said. World champion Sebastian Vettel said he will be happy when track action begins on Friday. “I think it’s not a big problem,” the German said when asked about the security situation this weekend, “and I’m happy once we start testing tomorrow because then we worry about the stuff that really matters — tyre temperatures, cars.” Earlier, Vitaly Petrov’s manager indicated the Russian would only travel to Bahrain if F1 could guarantee his safety. “If it was dangerous they wouldn’t let us in,” the Caterham driver told The National in Bahrain. “If they make sure nothing gets thrown onto that track to hurt us, then we’ll be fine. We are here; if it happens, it happens,” added Petrov. In fact, almost everyone in Bahrain has been reluctant to comment in detail, but there is an obvious feeling of unease. Peter Sauber told Blick newspaper: “I feel like a guest, and so it is not polite to criticise your host.” But 1996 world champion Damon Hill allowed himself some criticism of F1, including the sport’s most powerful figures, Bernie Ecclestone and Jean Todt. He pointed out that FIA president Todt has said “next to nothing” about the Bahrain saga. “This I find baffling,” Hill wrote in the Guardian. “Surely it is possible to condemn acts of inhumanity without taking a side?” As for F1 chief executive Ecclestone, who has consistently trivialised the Bahrain issue, Hill noted that “few” in the paddock “dare to publicly disagree” with the imperious 81-year-old. “Perhaps we should (criticise him), instead of just muttering under our breath, scared of losing our passes,” said Hill. Hermann Tilke, the German architect who designed the Sakhir circuit, sees the entire saga as a storm in a teacup. “It is safe in Bahrain,” Tilke, whose company has an office there, told the Kolner Express newspaper. “I’ve never heard about any problems from our people. “Of course there is some unrest, but it is protests, not civil war. As Bernie Ecclestone has said, we do sports, not politics,” he insisted. “And if they demonstrate peacefully now, the media will report on it, so both sides benefit.” |

F1′s Bahrain crisis deepensComments Off With F1 currently scheduled to arrive en masse in Bahrain next week, a crisis surrounding the possible cancellation of the island Kingdom’s race is continuing to deepen. The teams have now denied Bernie Ecclestone’s claim that they can simply choose to skip the event. “That would not be possible,” said a statement issued by the teams association FOTA. “Teams are unable to cancel (a) grand prix.” Bahrain, meanwhile, stepped up its campaign, accusing some of deploying “scare-mongering tactics” designed to force the race’s cancellation. The race organisers released a report conducted by Lotus, following the Enstone based team’s recent reconnaissance mission to Bahrain. “We came away from Bahrain feeling a lot more confident that everything is in hand,” Lotus is quoted as having reported. The team, however, reacted angrily, accusing the organisers of having released a “confidential” document. “Lotus F1 Team is one of 12 contestants of the … world championship and we would never try to substitute ourselves for the FIA”, said the Enstone based team. Surmised Times correspondent Kevin Eason on Twitter: “(It’s) getting messy…” At the same time, F1 chief executive Ecclestone became fully immersed in the political situation on Tuesday, reporteding personally phoning Bahrain’s crown prince to express concern about the jailed hunger striker. An Amnesty International report published this week had called for Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja’s release, amid claims he is now close to death and being force-fed. But the Bahrain government, through its information affairs authority, insisted that only police and rioters are being injured in “infrequent and remote clashes”. Also weighing into the argument was Sir Jackie Stewart, the eloquent triple world champion, who said: “I would go. “The commercial rights holder has sold a package, at a price, and it is part of the constructors’ agreement that they attend the races that have been published,” he told the Guardian. “As a team owner I would have to honour my agreement both orally and legally.” Whatever happens, the Bahrain saga – stretching back now over a year – is not good news for the future of the island Kingdom’s calendar spot. “Maybe we wouldn’t renew it (the contract),” Ecclestone admitted to the BBC. “We’ll have to look and see.” |

Brawn admits ‘cheap’ F-duct not easily copiedComments Off Ross Brawn has confirmed reports that Mercedes’ 2012 ‘F-duct’ will not be easily copied by rival teams. We reported on Thursday that while Red Bull and now Ferrari worked quickly to copy Sauber’s clever exhaust solution, they are crying foul over the Mercedes F-duct. Is it because they really believe it breaks the rules, or is the system simply difficult to copy? Red Bull designer Adrian Newey was quoted by Brazilian O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper in Malaysia: “In regard to the aerodynamic (F) duct of the Mercedes, and sending the airflow from the back to the front, it is necessary to review the entire project.” Mercedes team boss Brawn confirmed: “The opposition is so fierce (because) there’s a recognition it’s quite difficult to do.” He rejected the rivals’ arguments about cost, however, insisting Mercedes’ system consists mainly of carbon tubing costing no more than thousands of pounds. “It’s a very simple, cheap system, but not so easy to implement if you haven’t integrated it into your car,” said the Briton. “This is at the heart of the frustration of some of our opponents. If someone could put it on their car easily, I promise you we wouldn’t be having these discussions.” It emerged this week, however, that despite the FIA having consistently sided with Mercedes on the F-duct issue, Lotus’ technical boss James Allison has come up with two new arguments that will be put to Charlie Whiting next week in China. “We would obviously be extremely disappointed if someone was to take a different view,” said Brawn. “The FIA have been fairly consistent over their position so we have faith that they’ll maintain that consistency.” |

Ma Qing Hua joins HRT Formula 1 Team’s Driver Development ProgrammeComments Off HRT Formula 1 Team announces the incorporation of Chinese driver Ma Qing Hua to the Spanish team’s young driver development programme. The formation programme designed by HRT F1 Team for Ma Qing Hua includes professional assessment in his career as a driver, private tests with cars from different categories and simulator tests. If the results of the partnership are satisfactory, Qing Hua could take to the wheel of the F112 at the Formula 1 Young Driver test. Ma Qing Hua will perform his first official act with HRT Formula 1 Team on Thursday the 12th of April at a press conference previous to the Chinese Grand Prix (13th to 15th of April), which takes place at the Shanghai International Circuit. The details of the press conference will be announced shortly. The incorporation of Ma Qing Hua to HRT Formula 1 Team’s driver development programme is part of the Spanish team’s strategy in order to serve as a platform for the formation of professionals in the pinnacle of world motorsport. The driver born in Shanghai has been competing in different categories of national and international motorsport for many years. His incorporation to HRT F1 Team’s Driver Development Programme takes place after some simulator tests and a testing session in Cheste (Valencia) at the wheel of a World Series car. The qualities and attitude of Qing Hua convinced Luis Pérez-Sala of his potential to incorporate him to the programme which Dani Clos, HRT F1 Team test driver, is also a part of. Raikkonen to ‘have his say’ on 2013 Lotus designComments Off Just two races into 2012, Kimi Raikkonen has already sat at the wheel of Lotus’ car for 2013. His race engineer Mark Slade revealed that the Finn was at Enstone on Wednesday to sit in “a basic mock-up” of the single seater for next season. “There’s some rethinking in terms of the driver position for 2013, and we wanted to test it out before committing any further to the concept,” said Slade. “It may seem early, but it’s better to do these things sooner rather than later otherwise it can hold up the whole design process.” A report by the Finnish broadcaster MTV3 said that Lotus’ 2012 car was essentially complete late last November, when Raikkonen joined the team. So “Raikkonen can have his say on the car for next year”, the report added. |

Lack of development budget ‘a shame’Comments Off Sauber is in a race for money after discovering its 2012 car is up to speed with F1′s richest teams. As ever in formula one, world championships are won not on the basis of a clever initial design, but on a team’s ability to continue to develop it throughout a long season. According to O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper, the formerly BMW-owned Sauber team’s chief executive Monisha Kaltenborn admits that the Hinwil based outfit cannot compete on that front with the likes of McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull. “It’s a shame,” she is quoted as saying. “I hope we can show enough potential so that some companies decide to invest in our project,” said Kaltenborn, with the Brazilian newspaper estimating that Sauber’s budget is EUR 80 million this year. In contrast, the top four teams’ budgets are believed to be all above EUR 220m. Kaltenborn told F1′s official website recently that Sauber would back a push to impose a budget cap — an issue that triggered the big teams’ bitter political war with former FIA president Max Mosley a few years ago. “We … have also openly said that we are not satisfied with our sponsor situation because we have high targets and to achieve them you need appropriate funding,” she continued. “We still need to work on that side of things, as of course the more funding you have the more you can develop — and it shows on the track. “I have said before that when we look back we practically never had enough money to do what we really wanted to. The question is always how big the gap is — sometimes it is bigger, sometimes it is smaller.” |

Clever Sauber turning heads in 2012Comments Off Fernando Alonso’s win was a complete surprise, but the name of another team was on more paddock-dwellers’ lips after Malaysia — Sauber. “Only one team could do consistently good laptimes on all the tyres and in all the conditions, and it was Sauber,” confirmed Martin Whitmarsh, whose McLaren team had travelled to Sepang with arguably the fastest car. Also in Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport, Red Bull team boss Christian Horner agreed: “They (Sauber) have somehow managed to get all of the tyres to work perfectly, which at the moment is the key to success. “The (tyre) window is so small that it’s very easy to not be in it,” added the Briton. And Sepang winner Fernando Alonso, whose victory was only ensured by a late-race mistake by Sauber’s Sergio Perez, admitted: “No doubt about it, they were quicker than us.” Some believe it was only the Malaysian weather chaos that brought the Ferrari-powered C31 to the top of F1′s form-guide, but the Sauber was in fact also fast in Australia. “Our cars were severely damaged at the start (in Melbourne),” explained chief designer Matt Morris. “At the front for Perez, the rear for Kobayashi.” Nonetheless, both finished inside the top eight. “The race in Malaysia showed very clearly how fast our car is,” insisted team boss Peter Sauber, writing in Blick newspaper. “After two very different tracks, we have the assurance now that the C31 is a success.” The next question is precisely how the small Hinwil based team has managed to build a pace-setting car. One possible answer is the end of the blown diffuser era, and the fact that Sauber’s 2012 solution has already been copied by F1′s formerly-dominant Red Bull. Italy’s Autosprint, meanwhile, claims Ferrari is next, mischievously suggesting that the updated F2012 might aptly be called the ‘Ferrauber’. Referring to the FIA exhaust clampdown, Morris admitted: “We had to give up less than our opponents.” Peter Sauber added: “When I saw that Red Bull had chosen a similar route to us, I was sure that we were right.” Another trick on the C31 is a clever use of the loophole allowing an opening at the front of the car for driver cooling. “It’s no match-winner,” Morris insists, “but it gains us some (lap) time.” And Autosprint reports that another “trick” on the Sauber is located in front of the rear wheels, exploiting yet another “grey zone” in the regulations. |

Sala: KERS unlikely for HRT in 2012Comments Off HRT’s team boss has admitted installing KERS is an unlikely goal for the struggling Spanish team this year. Luis Perez Sala said the new F112 was designed to accommodate the energy-recovery technology, but qualifying comfortably within the 107 per cent rule is a better target for now. “We have a car we are yet to discover,” he told El Confidencial. Indeed, HRT travelled to Australia last month having hardly run its new Cosworth-powered car, and failed to qualify for the season opener. “It is designed to carry KERS but in the short term we will not (use it). We don’t think we’re going to race with it this year,” he added. “So, in this respect, it’s not perfect. Right now, we have assembled the car in a hurry and so the private testing at Mugello, just after Bahrain, will be very important to us.” Sala, having rebuilt HRT following the departure of team boss Colin Kolles, was speaking from HRT’s new headquarters at the Caja Magica (Magic Box). “After Bahrain, we will have the cars here. From the Spanish grand prix, we will begin to function more effectively. “In China and Bahrain we will improve things in the car and the team, but it is a slow process that will last all year. “As I sit here (in Madrid), some people are in Valencia, others in Germany, England … the cars are flying to China and we need to address issues of reliability, not just performance.” It is a tough situation for HRT, but Sala concedes that the ‘paddock perception’ of the team is that it has gone backwards since debuting in 2010. “It is really our first year,” he insists. He reveals that Bernie Ecclestone, once a staunch critic of the struggling backmarkers, is “quiet”. “We have not had any problems, I think he is calm,” said Sala. It is also a busy time off the track for HRT, as many rival teams are busily signing the new Concorde Agreement for 2013. “There are teams that are more advanced than others; for us, the negotiations are still at the beginning,” he said. The most obvious goals right now, Sala insists, are to have “a team that works together, has a reliable car and a small team that can develop it, and we’re around 105pc off the pole”. |

Toni Cuquerella, new Technical Director of HRT Formula 1 TeamComments Off Engineer Toni Cuquerella assumes, as of today, the role of Technical Director of HRT Formula 1 Team. Cuquerella, besides being at the head of technical development, will continue to exercise his role as the maximum figure of engineering on the track. Since Geoff Willis left the team in September of 2011, the position of Technical Director has not been occupied. The decision was then made for the development of the F112 to take place at the team’s technical office in Munich, at the hands of Holzer Group and the Chief of Aerodynamics, Stephane Chosse, under the supervision of the, until last February, Technical Coordinator Jacky Eeckelaert. With the F112 put on the track, it’s now time to work on its development and evolution and so, the naming of a person to lead this project is necessary. And no one better than Toni Cuquerella, with his experience in Formula 1 and his praiseworthy work at the fore of HRT, to take it on. The appointment of the Spanish engineer at the head of the technical department is a new step in the new management’s desire to centralize and take control of all the activities related to the design and development of the car. This will optimize the coordination of the different departments, helping to meet the set targets, and also rationalize resources. Toni Cuquerella, Technical Director: “The role of Technical Director implies a great amount of responsibility in terms of coordination and decision making. That’s why I’m very proud that the management considers me to be the most adequate person to carry it out. Until now there was a lot of dispersion from within the technical team and that had its repercussions in the concept and quality of the F112. My priority is to solve the current car’s problems to then develop it to its maximum potential, whilst also unifying and expanding the technical department, but I’m confident that we have a good work base and a clear direction to advance and have a good project for the future”. The transition from the previous project to this one hasn’t been easy and a lot of work has been carried out that without vital figures such as him wouldn’t have been possible. The position of Technical Director was vacant and the development of the F112 was carried out at the technical office in Munich. But now, with the car already on the track, it was important to take control and count on someone influential at the head of the technical office. And because of his experience, judgment and knowledge, Toni’s profile fitted in perfectly”. Profile Antonio Cuquerella was born in Gandía, Spain 38 years ago. He did a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Universidad Politécnica of Valencia. In 1999 he had his first role as a race engineer for Campos GP at the Open Nissan. After this he worked in various national and international motorsport categories before becoming Chief Engineer of the Toledo WTCC and Leon WTCC projects at SEAT Sport. In 2006 he arrived in Formula 1 as a race engineer for Super Aguri F1, where he spent two years before moving to BMW Sauber F1 Team, acting in the same role with driver Robert Kubica. Towards the end of 2009 he decided to take a risk and back Adrián Campos in a project to establish a new Spanish team in Formula 1, becoming the Chief Race Engineer for Campos Meta. Since the team’s first season, Toni has been the Chief Race and Test Engineer and has been a key figure both in the early days and this new stage of HRT and now he assumes an even more important role as the Technical Director. |

Martin Brundle: Struggling Red Bull the ‘surprise’ of 2012Comments Off Martin Brundle has described Red Bull’s lack of pace as the biggest surprise of the 2012 season so far. After consecutive world championships with Sebastian Vettel, the energy drink-owned team was universally tipped as the pre-season favourite for yet another F1 title. But McLaren dominated in Australia before Ferrari and Sauber surprisingly set the pace recently in Malaysia. Former F1 driver Brundle admitted the struggling RB8 was the surprise of the opening salvo in 2012, but he also acknowledged that the turnaround might have been predicted. “When you look at how the regulations have changed, it’s almost like they were designed to slow the Red Bulls down,” the Sky television commentator told the website of the BBC programme Top Gear. “Doubling the torsional stiffness of the front wings, the way Red Bull were ‘flying’ their car down the track with lots of rake, nose close to the ground, exhausts helping to sort the high rear ride height out, it’s all been taken away from them,” added Brundle. An unnamed engineer at Red Bull has admitted the team was caught on the hop in the winter pre-season, when it became clear McLaren was better prepared for the new rules. “McLaren came with a (exhaust) system on the edge of legality,” the engineer told Germany’s Auto Bild, “and it was declared legal by the FIA. “So (Adrian) Newey had to adapt,” he added, referring to Red Bull’s last-minute decision to change tack at the very end of the pre-season test period. The message coming from the Milton Keynes based team, therefore, is that Red Bull is playing catch-up. “We need to understand the car better,” admits team advisor Dr Helmut Marko, “which is why for the next race (in China) we will have hardly any new parts.” So until he’s back at the front, F1′s formerly-dominant Vettel – who lashed out at backmarker Narain Karthikeyan recently in Malaysia – needs to adapt. Asked if the German was justified in calling his Indian rival an “idiot”, Brundle insisted: “No. “That’s just an angry man who hasn’t got a front-running car at the moment. He’s just frustrated.” |

Sauber undecided on copying Mercedes F-ductComments Off Sauber has revealed it cannot afford to simply jump in and copy Mercedes’ innovative F-duct solution. The small Swiss team had almost winning race pace in Malaysia last weekend even without the extra straight-line speed that would be provided by a system along the lines of Mercedes’ DRS-complimenting concept. Despite their complaints about the legality of the system, there is little doubt the big-budget teams will be working frantically to emulate the Mercedes’ concept, which to date has the blessing of the FIA. According to Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport, however, it will be a different story for the smaller teams. “If we started now with a blank sheet of paper, we would be ready in two months,” said Sauber’s chief designer Matt Morris. “But it would really add up. We have to ask ourselves whether it’s worth it for us, or whether we would be better off chasing the laptime with more conventional steps. “On the other hand the big teams can handle a development like that in parallel to their normal programmes,” he added. Also on the technical front, Auto Motor und Sport reveals that rival teams are closer to getting to the bottom of Red Bull’s ever-flexible front wings. After the last day of testing in Barcelona, detailed photographs emerged of Sebastian Vettel’s stricken RB8 that appeared to show a sort of torsion bar inside the damaged front wing. The report said the torsion bar may be pre-loaded in order to pass the FIA’s static load tests, but then bend at speed. An FIA insider suggested the system, although permitted in private testing, “would not be allowed” at the actual grands prix. |

Force India to push on with new F1 spy sagaComments Off Years after F1′s ‘spygate’ sagas, the issue could be set to return to the very top of the governing body’s agenda. Force India claims Caterham and their common former wind tunnel partner Aerolab were this week “found liable” by a British court of using Force India data for the Team Lotus car of early 2010. Vijay Mallya’s Silverstone based team said the ruling has been “referred for the consideration” of the FIA. But Aerolab has hit back, insisting the judge “entirely rejected” Force India’s charge of “systematic copying”. “On the contrary, such misuse as I have found to have occurred mainly consisted of opportunistic copying of CAD files by CAD designers in order to take a short cut,” the wind tunnel company quoted judge Justice Arnold as saying. Nonetheless, Caterham was ordered to pay EUR 25,000 to Force India, but not the 18 million requested by the team. “We were deeply disappointed with the damages award,” Force India deputy team principal Robert Fernley told the Guardian. He said Caterham/Aerolab did not make a simple “short cut” in copying the CAD files, but copied “front and rear break duct systems, the front wing, the rear wing, the barge boards, the vortex generators and the diffuser”. “The judge might say it’s not systematic but in my view it’s pretty extensive,” added Fernley. Force India is expected to appeal. And if the FIA intervenes and charges Caterham with theft, “it would cost Caterham tens of millions for the money they received for finishing tenth in the world championship for the past two years”, wrote Guardian correspondent Paul Weaver. “And that is before any fine.” |
