Williams: Maldonado a future champ, not ‘pay driver’(0) Last Sunday proved that Pastor Maldonado is no mere ‘pay driver’. “If he was a fool, he would not be with us, no matter how much money he brings,” Sir Frank Williams is quoted by Brazil’s Globo Esporte. Venezuelan Maldonado, whose links to the state owned oil company PDVSA and president Hugo Chavez controversially deliver many millions to Williams’ Oxfordshire based team, became F1′s fifth different winner of 2012 last weekend in Spain. It has helped him to shake off the ‘pay driver’ insult, Williams insisting he is now a potential world champion instead. “Without a doubt. He is very fast and makes no mistakes,” the newly 70-year-old Briton said. Williams does, however, acknowledge that Maldonado’s money was a key factor in the decision to sign him. “Yes, it was to some extent,” he said. “I don’t deny that. But he’s also a real driver. He fully deserves to be on the team, with or without money. “The truth is that if you don’t have money, you don’t get to be in formula one,” added Williams. Team shareholder Toto Wolff agrees: “If you want to race in GP2, you need a few million pounds. So, the drivers need not only to be fast and talented, but able to attract the sponsors. “So let’s forget this thing about ‘pay drivers’,” he insisted. Triple world champion Nelson Piquet, however, has some lingering doubts. He ran Maldonado in his own GP2 team some years ago, and this week recalled a driver who was often “too aggressive” and made too many mistakes. “We’re not talking about a guy who shone in his youth, like Nico Rosberg,” said the famous Brazilian, “or someone like Lewis Hamilton, who always had everything he needed thanks to Ron Dennis. “In GP2, when you don’t stand out in your second year, you begin to be doubted. In Maldonado’s case, he only shone in his fourth year. “Perhaps because of this he only made it to formula one as a paying driver, without having anything special, apparently. He was perceived as just a good pilot, but clearly no Alonso. “Now he was at the right place at the right time but he still managed to beat Alonso in Spain as well as another world champion, Kimi (Raikkonen). So hats off to him.” |

FIA had to disqualify Hamilton in Spain(0) Charlie Whiting has defended the decision in Spain to move Lewis Hamilton from pole to the very rear of the grid. Although McLaren was widely criticised for making a grave error, the stewards’ penalty was at the same time described by the world’s press as “draconian”. “Quite frankly I did not expect the penalty that we received,” said McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh. Indeed, given that McLaren’s fuel indiscretion occurred only in the decisive Q3, why not simply delete Hamilton’s Q3 laptimes, thereby putting the Briton mid-grid for the race? “We had no room to move,” Whiting, the FIA’s race director, responded to Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport when told that Hamilton’s penalty seemed too severe. “If there is a violation, it applies to the whole session, not just part of it,” he insisted. “Qualifying begins with Q1.” Whiting explained that if Hamilton had only lost his Q3 time, a precedent would have been set tempting teams to risk not being checked for the mandatory 1 litre fuel sample in post-qualifying scrutineering. Auto Motor und Sport said only one or two fuel samples are actually checked after qualifying at grands prix. Competitors could, therefore, genuinely “run the risk” of using less fuel than is allowed in Q3, if the penalty for being caught is relatively light, Whiting argued. He recalled last year’s German grand prix, when Sebastien Buemi was sent to the back of the grid because his fuel sample showed irregularities. As it was not possible to check if the illegal fuel had also been used in Q1 and Q2, the Toro Rosso driver had to be disqualified from qualifying, Whiting argued. |

Alguersuari says 2013 return ’100 per cent’ sure(0) Jaime Alguersuari has told Spanish publications he is “absolute certain” he will be on the 2013 grid. “This is the best year of my life,” he told Mundo Deportivo, referring to 2012, the year after his young F1 career stalled when he was dropped by backer Red Bull. “I’m only 22,” said Spaniard Alguersuari, who is now Pirelli’s main test driver and a co-commentator for British radio. “I’m in the prime of my life. “It is increasingly clear that what happened with Toro Rosso was not a sporting decision. It was an internal decision and I don’t want to go deeper.” He sounded confident about the future. “It is 100 per cent that I will return in 2013. After being with Pirelli I will have very important knowledge. I knew that this transitionary step was necessary and I’m very happy,” said Alguersuari. “If I had gone (to be test driver) with a team, with all due respect, I’d have no options now. “I am developing a product (Pirelli) that nobody understands but that is vital for formula one — to know the tyres and to understand them. I’m in the right place,” he is quoted by La Vanguardia newspaper. “I chose to be with Pirelli because I knew it would be the most important (element) in formula one. “I know where I am and I know where I’ll be next year,” he insisted. |

Alguersuari: red Bull loyalty ‘a mistake’(0) Jaime Alguersuari has concluded he made “a mistake” to remain loyal to Red Bull late last season. After testing Pirelli’s 2010 Renault car last week at Jerez, the Spaniard moved on to Barcelona to continue his work as a co-commentator for British radio. However, he revealed recently that he might have been on the 2012 grid, had he not believed Red Bull executives who told him he would be at Toro Rosso this year. “It was definitely a mistake not to negotiate with other teams,” said the Spaniard, “as I had the opportunity and declined offers,” he told Marca sports newspaper. “I did that because I had loyalty to Red Bull.” Asked if he has talked with anyone from Red Bull since his dismissal, the 22-year-old revealed: “The directors, no, the technical team, yes.” It still pains him that, in explaining their decision, the Red Bull officials like Dr Helmut Marko insisted Alguersuari was not a potential winner. “If you think that for six years they supported me then they changed their opinion overnight. One day you have a champion, the next you don’t,” he said. |

Abu Dhabi criticises young driver test shakeup(0) The boss of Abu Dhabi’s F1 circuit has criticised plans to run the young driver test at Silverstone later this year. Originally, the young driver test was scheduled to take place as usual this year at Yas Marina, the week after the Abu Dhabi grand prix. But, due to the calendar congestion at the end of this season, the majority of teams have decided instead to go to Silverstone in July, with only the two Red Bull-owned teams sticking with the Abu Dhabi plan. Lotus team boss Eric Boullier, however, is quoted by The National newspaper as saying the Silverstone plan is “nonsense”. Yas Marina chief Richard Cregan agrees: “If you’re a good young driver in the middle of a season, then it’s not ideal to be testing a formula one car midway through the year. “These guys should be focusing on whatever series it is they are racing, which is why the F1 testing in Abu Dhabi worked so well in the past because it was effectively the end of their season.” He also warned that the earlier timing of the Silverstone test means teams could spend more time trying to develop their cars than on seriously evaluating the next generation of drivers. “It is first and foremost a young drivers test and it must remain that,” Cregan insisted. “It is a chance for young drivers to get maybe a first chance to drive an F1 car and it is chance for teams to run their eye over a driver and evaluate his performance. “Developing the car and parts should be secondary,” he said. Abu Dhabi could, however, be back on if Silverstone’s weather forecast looks poor, even though as soon as a car has left the pitlane in July, that team will no longer be allowed to change its plans. Even though Lotus’ Boullier thinks the Silverstone decision was wrong, he has vowed to stick with the majority. “But actually I would like it to rain, so we will go back to the original schedule,” said the Frenchman. Cregan said Abu Dhabi’s door remains open. “We’ll still be working to the same standards,” he said. “So in that sense nothing changes.” |

Bahrain could get director on F1 board(0) Bahrain, the controversial island Kingdom, could have been central to McLaren’s decision to agree the terms of the next Concorde Agreement. Bahrain’s ruling family, through its investment arm Mumtalakat Holdings, owns half of the famous British team. The Times’ F1 correspondent Kevin Eason quoted a source as saying the link “pushed (McLaren’s) Concorde deal over the line”. In return for signing up, Bahrain reportedly received a “pledge” that last month’s highly contentious grand prix would go ahead. Eason also said it is possible that one of McLaren’s two Bahraini directors, rather than the obvious choice Ron Dennis, could be appointed to the F1 board once the sport is floated on the Singapore exchange. Bernie Ecclestone denied the 2012 Bahrain grand prix and the Concorde Agreement deal were linked. “It was nothing to do with the Bahrain race (going ahead),” the F1 chief executive insisted. “But McLaren liked the deal.” Intriguingly, however, F1′s post-stock market floatation chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe has defended the controversial decision to push ahead with Bahrain last month. “The race was exploited by the opposition in Bahrain, not vice versa,” he told the Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung. “That was not interpreted correctly by the media. “If groups want to exploit sporting events for their interests, then the worst thing you can do is give way.” Brabeck also compared Bahrain to England. “In what countries are there no riots?” he asked rhetorically. “A year ago there were riots in London — should the Olympic Games now be cancelled?” |

Alguersuari axe ‘incomprehensible’(0) Jaime Alguersuari’s father has slammed Red Bull’s decision to axe his son. Jaime Alguersuari snr said the decision by Dr Helmut Marko to oust the young Spaniard after a strong season and at the age of 21 was “unfair and incomprehensible”. But “whoever killed him buried him badly,” Alguersuari snr added, referring to his son’s new full time roles as co-commentator on British radio and with Pirelli. Alguersuari snr, who is involved with the organisation of the Renault World Series, said his son is due to test Pirelli’s 2010 Renault test car next week. According to EFE news agency, Alguersuari snr also said his son’s career to date has been more impressive than Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne, who are Toro Rosso’s new drivers. |

D’Ambrosio could drive Fridays in 2012(0) Jerome d’Ambrosio has revealed he could drive one of the Lotus cars during Friday morning practice sessions at some point in 2012. The former Virgin driver, who is managed by Lotus boss Eric Boullier’s Gravity company, was appointed as the team’s third and reserve driver for this year. But, until now, it was not known if the role would involve Friday morning practice duties. Asked by the La Libre newspaper when he will be seen on the grid once again, Belgian d’Ambrosio answered: “I hope in 2013.” He will get his 2013 campaign up and running on Tuesday, when he gets the chance to drive Lotus’ current E20 for the first time at the Mugello test. The 26-year-old said on Monday: “I will try to show what I can do every time I have the opportunity, not only tomorrow but also during the Friday morning tests that I can participate in.” D’Ambrosio admitted he would rather be racing this year, but insists that his role at Lotus is a good stepping stone. “I’m not complaining,” he said. “I remain convinced that my decision to become a reserve driver with a big team was the best thing for me.” And he insisted he is not jealous of the similarly-aged Romain Grosjean, who took the E20 to the podium in Bahrain recently. “Honestly not,” said d’Ambrosio. “I would be a fool to think that if Romain had crashed twice more I would replace him in Barcelona. “Instead, what Grosjean has done confirms that young guys can be trusted. I am glad to see him succeed. “I don’t come to grands prix hoping one of my teammates is hurt. I’m here to learn, not to laugh.” He thinks Lotus could win a race in 2012. “It’s possible, yes,” said d’Ambrosio. “The E20 works well when it’s hot, degrading the tyres not too much. “In Bahrain, we had the best car in the race. We cannot afford to miss opportunities.” |

di Grassi: Pirelli situation ‘good for F1′(0) Pirelli test driver Lucas di Grassi has defended the F1 tyre supplier following Michael Schumacher’s criticism. Schumacher attacked the Italian marque’s 2012 product after the Bahrain grand prix, complaining that the tyres wear so fast that drivers often have to take corners at half-pace like the safety car. “In some ways he’s right,” Brazilian di Grassi, who along with Jaime Alguersuari tests tyres for Pirelli, is quoted by Globo. “You can’t go at 100 per cent all the time because the current tyres are designed to highlight the strategy during the races. “Drivers have to think more about what part of the race to make best use of the tyres,” said the former Virgin driver. Di Grassi, 27, credited Pirelli for the exciting races seen so far in 2012. “The championship is very balanced, which is good for everyone, especially the public,” he said. “It’s partly because Pirelli has been able to use the data it collected last year and make good decisions for this year,” added di Grassi. Also with a view contrary to Schumacher’s is the seven time world champion’s own teammate, Nico Rosberg. “F1 has become more interesting,” said the Shanghai winner, “as everything has been shaken up — it’s much better than the same cars and drivers always driving away from the front,” he is quoted by German media. “Due to the tyre situation, the races have been very varied, which is an extraordinary challenge but also very exciting. And we have to get used to it,” added Rosberg. |

Force India sat out practice to save money(0) Another theory about Force India’s absence from a practice session in Bahrain last weekend has emerged. Word has it the Silverstone based team sat out the second session on Friday because staff were spooked by a Molotov cocktail incident and didn’t want to be returning to their hotels in darkness. Officially, Force India said the decision to skip a practice session was for “logistical reasons”. “None of the other teams seem to have a problem,” said Bernie Ecclestone last weekend. “Maybe (it’s) nothing to do with being in this country, maybe it’s something else.” An event summary by Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport said: “There are rumours that Force India wanted to save its engines because they are short on cash.” The team’s Bahrain crisis was handled by deputy chief Bob Fernley, in the absence of owner and principal Vijay Mallya. Indeed, Indian Mallya does seem to have bigger problems, with the latest reports indicating he is considering selling 26 per cent of his flagship spirits company in order to rescue his dying airline Kingfisher. A spokesman for JM Financial, representing Mallya, dismissed the suggestion as “factually incorrect and speculative”. |

Webber helps fans get live coverage in Aus(0) Australian F1 fans are this week rejoicing in local hero Mark Webber even more than usual. Pressure applied by the Red Bull driver was reportedly instrumental in returning the sport to the live television airways in Australian capital cities. Fans were outraged with Australian broadcaster Ten’s decision to take formula one from its high definition channel One, which in turn meant viewers in Perth and Adelaide had no live coverage at all. Angry fans bombarded Ten’s Facebook and Twitter pages with criticism abuse, and urged Webber to help their cause. Webber obliged. “Come on (Ten), I hear our great Australian motor sport fans are not happy with rescheduling of timings of the GPs,” he wrote on Twitter. “Let’s go live.” Within an hour, Ten reinstated Perth and Adelaide’s live broadcasts — and in full HD. “The next time Ten wants to tangle with its motor sport audience, perhaps they should ask Mark Webber first,” read a report at The Australian newspaper. |

Ecclestone unhappy with Bahrain’s ‘UniF1ied’ slogan(0) Bernie Ecclestone has revealed he was not happy Bahrain organisers used the acronym ‘F1′ in its political slogan for last weekend’s race. The F1 chief executive was highly supportive of the island Kingdom’s intensely controversial return to the sport’s calendar, insisting Bahrain will retain its grand prix “forever”. But when asked about the banners around the Sakhir circuit and the island Kingdom that read ‘UniF1ed’, 81-year-old Ecclestone admitted to the Mirror: “We never put it there. “We told them to take it down, not to use it. I saw other things, not like that.” But Sakhir circuit chief Zayed Alzayani wore a cap bearing the slogan throughout the grand prix weekend, even when in Ecclestone’s company. Briton Ecclestone, however, denied the Bahrain slogan only intensified the opposition’s anger. “Before they started using that slogan there was trouble about F1,” he insisted. “People make excuses but there are only two sports where politics come into it; us and the Olympics because the profile is big enough. “There was a big golf match in Bahrain before F1 arrived and there was no problems there. “We are not here to tell people how to run their country.” Ecclestone, however, was angry with some of F1′s British journalists in Bahrain, following their harsh criticism of the decision to push ahead with the race. “I saw Bernie get angry in the press room with some British journalists,” revealed O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper correspondent Livio Oricchio. “I had never seen him that angry.” |

F1 assesses fallout after damaging Bahrain saga(0) With the F1 world now returned from Bahrain, the sport is assessing the fallout of one of the most controversial grands prix in history. The drivers were conspicuously quiet over the saga in the island Kingdom, but – with no contract tying him down – former Force India driver Adrian Sutil admitted he was glad he was not there. “In a situation like that, it is probably better not to go,” the German said on Sky Deutschland. “On the one hand, the decision was made (to go to Bahrain), on the other hand, it’s very difficult when there are so many problems in a country.” Red Bull reserve driver Sebastien Buemi, who has family living in Bahrain, does not agree at all. “I arrived on Monday and I had no problem — maybe there were a few more police than two years ago, but nothing happened to me,” the Swiss insisted on Austrian Servus TV. Force India and Sauber, however, witnessed Molotov cocktail attacks on their treks to and from the circuit. And Caterham team spokesman Tom Webb told the Sun that there was “one minor incident when one of our (hire) vans slowed down in traffic and its occupants saw a local youth on the side of the main road brandishing a bottle with a rag stuffed in its neck”. World champion and race winner Sebastian Vettel also admitted the feeling was tense in the paddock throughout the weekend. “It was not easy for anyone,” the Red Bull driver admitted, according to SID news agency, “but I’m glad that nothing happened to any of us (in F1).” And the Telegraph quotes Vettel adding: “Hopefully, we come back in the future when everything’s a little bit safer.” Reuters reports that Vodafone, the main sponsor of the half Bahrain-owned McLaren team, sent no staff to the country and expressed concerns to the British outfit. But Jim Wright, an F1 sponsorship expert, told the Guardian that he thinks while the sport’s image took a beating last weekend, sponsors will be happy. “Most teams handled a difficult decision very well,” he said. “On that basis I think a lot of people would be pleased with that and happy to get involved with them.” The television audience was also unaffected – even boosted – with the BBC reporting more viewers for Bahrain than Australia and Malaysia, and Germany revealing similarly strong figures. Still, there remains criticism. “Now is an opportunity to reflect,” former F1 driver Alex Zanardi told Tuttosport, “and make sure that major sporting events are assigned only to governments that deserve the honour of hosting them. “Ecclestone is brilliant and has made formula one what it is, but he can’t administer races at any cost and above all else,” insisted the Italian. Due to security fears, Force India sat out a practice session on Friday so that staff could return to their hotels in daylight. F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone was reportedly enraged, and according to rumours got his revenge by instructing Formula One Management’s television cameras to ignore the Silverstone based team’s cars in qualifying. “There was a bit of fuss about what we did,” deputy team principal Bob Fernley is quoted by Spain’s AS newspaper, “and it was not easy, but I think it turned out to be the right response. “We had a lot of pressure, our attitude was not well received,” he confirmed, “but I think that we had a duty of care to our employees, and to do the right thing by the team.” |

Alonso: ‘More treasure than deserved’ with F2012Comments Off Amid Ferrari’s performance crisis with the struggling F2012 car, the Italian team has emerged from the opening ‘flyaway’ races with a solid head of steam. He might be just fifth, but Fernando Alonso is a mere 10 points off the lead of the drivers’ world championship, after a see-sawing pecking order emerged from the overseas races in Australia, Malaysia, China and Bahrain. The Spanish driver admitted mere days ago that the F2012, at present, is perhaps the “sixth or seventh” best on the grid. But next up is the test at Mugello, where major upgrades to the car – so significant that some sections of the media are expecting a ‘new Ferrari’ – will be tested ahead of its Barcelona debut. Sepang winner Alonso’s latest surprise was to finish ahead of the best McLaren in Bahrain. “If we had said that beforehand, it would be unthinkable,” he told Antena 3 television. “It was another race where we have limited the damage pretty well. “We were eight points behind the leader, now it’s 10. We have spent the first four races outside Europe losing ten points, which I think is more treasure than we deserve. “For Montmelo (Barcelona) we have to be better. We have to stop depending on others and start depending on ourselves,” added Alonso. Asked how much he is expecting the F2012 to improve, the 30-year-old was coy. “I have said it could be one tenth, maybe two, one and a half … but we may not be in the same situation as before.” Alonso was also critical of the stewards’ decision to leave Nico Rosberg without a penalty on Sunday, after the German driver forced him off the circuit whilst defending position. “He also did the same to Hamilton, so it’s two to zero for him (Rosberg),” said Alonso. “But if there was a wall there, you would have to be talking to someone else now …” On Twitter, he sarcastically added: “I think you are going to have fun in future races. You can defend position as you want and you can overtake outside the track! Enjoy!” |

Internet ‘hacktivists’ attack F1 over BahrainComments Off Internet hackers have threatened to wreak havoc as they sided against formula one over the sport’s decision to push ahead with the highly controversial Bahrain grand prix. The well-known ‘hacktivists’ Anonymous brought down F1′s official website on Friday, slamming Bernie Ecclestone as “evil” and threatening the “worst sh**storm” if the track action continues to proceed this weekend in the troubled island Kingdom. “Attacks on their (the teams’) computer servers could prevent the race taking place,” the Daily Express newspaper speculated. Anonymous also took control of another specialist website, posting a statement that accused the sport of supporting the Bahrain government despite the country’s “human rights situation” and saying F1 will now “be punished”. In an awkward official press conference on Friday, team bosses continued to support the sport’s decision to press ahead with the race. “Ultimately we’re a race team,” said McLaren and FOTA’s Martin Whitmarsh. “We’re here to go motor racing and that’s our number one priority.” |
