Sala: KERS unlikely for HRT in 2012Comments Off HRT’s team boss has admitted installing KERS is an unlikely goal for the struggling Spanish team this year. Luis Perez Sala said the new F112 was designed to accommodate the energy-recovery technology, but qualifying comfortably within the 107 per cent rule is a better target for now. “We have a car we are yet to discover,” he told El Confidencial. Indeed, HRT travelled to Australia last month having hardly run its new Cosworth-powered car, and failed to qualify for the season opener. “It is designed to carry KERS but in the short term we will not (use it). We don’t think we’re going to race with it this year,” he added. “So, in this respect, it’s not perfect. Right now, we have assembled the car in a hurry and so the private testing at Mugello, just after Bahrain, will be very important to us.” Sala, having rebuilt HRT following the departure of team boss Colin Kolles, was speaking from HRT’s new headquarters at the Caja Magica (Magic Box). “After Bahrain, we will have the cars here. From the Spanish grand prix, we will begin to function more effectively. “In China and Bahrain we will improve things in the car and the team, but it is a slow process that will last all year. “As I sit here (in Madrid), some people are in Valencia, others in Germany, England … the cars are flying to China and we need to address issues of reliability, not just performance.” It is a tough situation for HRT, but Sala concedes that the ‘paddock perception’ of the team is that it has gone backwards since debuting in 2010. “It is really our first year,” he insists. He reveals that Bernie Ecclestone, once a staunch critic of the struggling backmarkers, is “quiet”. “We have not had any problems, I think he is calm,” said Sala. It is also a busy time off the track for HRT, as many rival teams are busily signing the new Concorde Agreement for 2013. “There are teams that are more advanced than others; for us, the negotiations are still at the beginning,” he said. The most obvious goals right now, Sala insists, are to have “a team that works together, has a reliable car and a small team that can develop it, and we’re around 105pc off the pole”. |

‘New’ HRT not in third F1 seasonComments Off Martin Brundle has admitted he is surprised HRT is still struggling so much at the start of its third season in formula one. Better known then as ‘Hispania’, the Spanish team was founded by Adrian Campos after former FIA president Max Mosley opened up three new places in pitlane for the start of the 2010 season. But last year, the team’s second group of owners – the Carabante family – passed the baton yet again to Thesan Capital, who have rebuilt HRT in the wake of the management and infrastructure that was brought by former boss Colin Kolles. Even so, the highly respected British commentator and former grand prix veteran Martin Brundle is surprised that Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan are struggling so much with the team’s Cosworth-powered 2012 car. “Somebody’s got to be at the front, somebody’s got to be at the back,” the Briton told the BBC motoring programme Top Gear’s website. “(But) the HRT is particularly poor at the moment, and it confuses me why in year three it’s worse than it was in year one.” Carlos Gracia, an FIA vice-president and head of Spain’s motor racing federation, doesn’t fully agree. Speaking to the sports newspaper Marca, he explained that veteran de la Rosa faces a “handicap” as the Spaniard races with HRT this year. “He knows where he is; in a brand new team, although some people believe it is their third year. “They have begun again, but it seems that they are in a situation where they have only just started and yet they have to clean up the image of the other years. “That’s his handicap, but the team will have credibility because of Pedro and also because of a good business investment,” added Gracia. |

Spanish team HRT’s car made in GermanyComments Off Former boss Colin Kolles and his Greding-based company is no longer involved, but there remains a strong German input with the struggling team HRT. It is there that, since November 2011, the Holzer-Gruppe company has been frantically building up the Cosworth-powered cars for Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan. “Under our management almost everything has been made here in Bobingen,” said Gunther Holzer. “For the wind tunnel we used the Mercedes facility in Brackley (UK),” he added. Eight of F1′s 12 teams are based in England, with the others either in Italy (Ferrari and Toro Rosso) or Switzerland (Sauber). HRT uses Williams’ gearbox. “We wanted to go our separate way, not like almost everyone else who are all within a few miles of Oxford,” said HRT chief executive Saul Ruiz de Marcos. The team’s longer plan is to be solely based in Madrid, but for now Holzer will lead the development of the F112. “For the start of the European season in Spain we are planning the first improvements to the car,” said Marcos. Holzer explained: “The car is designed first for safety and so is heavy compared to the competition. For the future we are focused on making it lighter.” Before the lighter car debuts in Barcelona, HRT faces three more challenges – Malaysia, China and Bahrain – at which the sport’s 107 per cent rule will be a major hurdle. “The goal is to qualify, there is no other,” admitted de la Rosa. “Race reliability is something else we need to work on, but first we have to qualify.” |

Two teams likely to sit out MelbourneComments Off Two teams are in danger of sitting out Sunday’s Australian grand prix. The hurdle that the struggling former Virgin team – as well as HRT – must get over, is the 107 per cent rule in Q1. It is an even higher hurdle than last year, because Pirelli has made its harder tyres softer in 2012 — meaning the difference between the tyres being used by the quickest cars and the slowest cars in Q1 will be smaller. More bad news is that Red Bull has brought new parts to Australia that could make qualifying-specialist Sebastian Vettel even faster on Saturday. “If that’s true then the qualifying test for us – with zero kilometres under our belts – is almost impossible,” admitted Glock. At HRT, the situation is arguably worse — especially for Pedro de la Rosa, who was little more than a spectator on Friday as the Spanish team built up his Cosworth-powered car at the eleventh hour. “Keep smiling, be patient,” he is quoted by Auto Motor Und Sport, when asked what his mantra is in Melbourne. “We need to think more in the medium term. We are experiencing the birth of a new racing team. “For us, this year is not just about getting the new car up and running — over the next months, we are taking the whole team to Madrid. “At the moment we are still operating from Madrid, Valencia and Munich,” he explained. The Spanish team’s new boss Luis Perez Sala agreed that qualifying at Albert Park is a big ask. “For us it has been almost a success just to be here in Melbourne because it has been very tough,” he said on Friday. As for the 107 per cent rule, “It will be difficult for us,” said the former Minardi driver. “I’m not thinking now about the speed of the car, I’m just trying to get all the things done that we need to do as best as possible to get into (practice) tomorrow.” He said HRT will try again next weekend, in Malaysia. “I would like them (the team) to relax a bit and we will see. Malaysia? Shanghai? Whatever.” |

Glock thinks new Marussia to beat 107pc ruleComments Off Timo Glock is hoping McLaren’s driver simulator is accurate. If not, he and rookie teammate Charles Pic could be left out of Sunday’s season opening Australian grand prix. Some promotional running on demo Pirelli tyres aside, the MR01 sat out the entire pre-season period because it twice failed to pass one of the FIA’s mandatory crash tests. “As it (the testing) was on the demo tyres, I can’t say much. The feeling was very good, but it’s just a feeling,” said Glock. In addition to the Silverstone shakedown, he has done three days at the wheel of the car in the virtual world, thanks to the former Virgin team’s technology deal with McLaren. In the McLaren simulator, German Glock said the car was fast enough to qualify for races. “But I’m cautious,” he said, “because we do not have much experience with the simulator.” Meanwhile, HRT is pushing to get a final shipment of components to Melbourne in order to put together a second 2012 chassis. “If there’s a flight delay, it could be we miss P1,” Pedro de la Rosa told the BBC. |

Timo Glock:Marussia must focus on basics before KERSComments Off Marussia needs to get the basics right before worrying about KERS, Timo Glock explained on the eve of the 2012 season. Last year, the Cosworth-powered team was soundly beaten by its closest rival Team Lotus, who as well as changing its name to Caterham for 2012 has also added a Red Bull KERS system to its Renault-powered package. “On the subject of KERS, it is of course a disadvantage not to have it,” Glock is quoted by the SID news agency. “But we have said that our focus is right to first get rid of the four seconds of aerodynamic deficit, before we worry about the money and the manpower we need for five tenths with the KERS,” added Glock. “We have to get the foundation right first,” said the almost 30-year-old. |

Glock: New Marussia car ‘good’ so farComments Off Despite a difficult winter for the Marussia team, Timo Glock is in a positive mood as he travels to Australia for the 2012 season. Indeed, the Russian website F1News quotes technical consultant Pat Symonds as saying the “last two months were the most difficult of my 20 years in formula one”. Due to a testing loophole allowing some running on demonstration Pirelli tyres, the Cosworth-powered car finally made its debut over two days of ‘promotional filming’ early this week at Silverstone. “The basis is definitely good; the first test miles were really good,” German Glock is quoted by the German-language Speed Week. “The car did exactly what we expected from it. The data we recorded corresponded exactly to what we had calculated previously,” he added. The report said Glock will travel to Australia on Friday, with his 30th birthday set to coincide exactly with the start of the new season. Symonds added: “There is still much to be done, but it is a long term project and so I hope that we move forward step by step.” |

Marussia to race after passing FIA crash testComments Off Marussia’s 2012 car will be on the Melbourne grid next weekend, after the MR01 finally passed a missing FIA crash test. The MR01 finally made its track debut on Monday and Tuesday, due to a loophole allowing limited running on demonstration Pirelli tyres for filming purposes even when the mandatory crash tests have not been passed. But finally, late on Tuesday, Marussia announced that the crash tests have now all been passed. “After a challenging few weeks for the team, we are pleased to have overcome the last hurdle of the final FIA observed crash test, which we passed today,” said technical consultant Pat Symonds. “Whilst we have a lot of catching up to do, we take heart from the fact that everything is back on a more positive trajectory,” Renault’s former engineering director added. |

HRT confirms Monday debut for 2012 carComments Off HRT has confirmed that its 2012 car, the F112, will finally make its track debut on Monday. But struggling backmarker HRT asked its rivals for special permission, given it had yet to use its separate allowed test day for ‘filming and promotional’ purposes. Actually, the Cosworth-powered HRT is also being launched, debuted and shaken down, after a failed FIA crash test delayed progress for a team already recovering from a change of ownership and the exit of boss Colin Kolles. A report in the German press said HRT has been focused not only on the ‘step nose’ 2012 car, but also buying up all the infrastructure needed for a new F1 team — like pitstop wheel guns at EUR 4000 apiece. The team said Narain Karthikeyan will do the driving at the Circuit de Catalunya on Monday, with Pedro de la Rosa and reserve Dani Clos also on hand. EFE news agency quotes de la Rosa as admitting the first six months this year will be “very hard” for HRT. Other Spanish reports said the F112 was finally fired up in the factory on Sunday. “I’m very happy,” said de la Rosa, “but also I know how much work is ahead, because we are two months late and we are starting with virtually no preseason.” Referring to Monday’s shakedown, he added: “It’s better than nothing and, for us, it’s almost a victory,” de la Rosa is quoted by Mundo Deportivo. |

HRT hoping to debut 2012 car on SundayComments Off HRT is hoping to get one up on its tailender rival Marussia by at least running its 2012 car before shipping it to Australia. “Of course it’s a shame,” German driver Timo Glock told the DPA news agency, “but safety comes first.” HRT’s 2012 single seater, however, has – despite a similar delay – at least now satisfied the FIA’s safety rules and is therefore allowed to run at the Circuit de Catalunya if able. Indeed, in the Barcelona paddock this week, the HRT motor home is present. But team figures Pedro de la Rosa and boss Luis Perez Sala have admitted that, while now homologated, the 2012 car is not quite ready to be tested. “The truth is that, today, the goal is to try to debut on Sunday,” de la Rosa is quoted by the Diario Sport newspaper. “If not, we would have the possibility to do a test on Monday.” The FIA has already declared that testing on Monday – the day after the final official Barcelona test ends – is not allowed because that would be the week before Melbourne. But HRT is yet to do its allowed filming day, team boss Perez Sala is quoted as saying on Wednesday. “We are in the construction phase of the car and it would be great to have it ready for Sunday,” added de la Rosa. The former McLaren test driver also revealed that HRT’s new car is designed to run KERS, unlike the 2012 Marussia. “It is designed to use it, but the team has decided to start the season without (KERS),” said de la Rosa. |

HRT to be in Barcelona this weekComments Off HRT’s 2012 campaign looks set to finally get off the start-line, after the new single seater passed the mandatory crash tests. But writing in AS newspaper, correspondent Manuel Franco said the Cosworth-powered chassis has finally passed all the crash tests, meaning it can now debut this week at the Circuit de Catalunya. The final pre-season group test begins on Thursday, but Franco wrote that it is not clear precisely when the new HRT will make its debut, probably in Pedro de la Rosa’s hands. “But is expected that he (de la Rosa) and his teammate Narain Karthikeyan will be in Catalonia,” he added. |

Bottas: Renault engine better than CosworthComments Off Valtteri Bottas has given some insight into Williams’ decision to switch to Renault power for this year. But for 2012 the Grove based team has switched to Renault, the maker of world champion Red Bull’s engines, as well as fellow customers Lotus and Caterham. “The Renault engine is more powerful,” revealed Williams’ test driver Bottas. “It is also smaller in size, which is good for the aerodynamics, and has a lower fuel consumption,” he told the MTV3 broadcaster. The 22-year-old Finn, who is managed by Williams co-owner Toto Wolff, will drive the FW34 on Wednesday at the Barcelona test. He will also contest 15 of this season’s Friday morning practice sessions. “This season will definitely be better than the last,” said Bottas, “when it was Williams’ poorest in history.” Cosworth still supplies the struggling Marussia and HRT teams. |

Maldonado runs out of Cosworth engines for 2011Comments Off Pastor Maldonado will move ten places down the Abu Dhabi grid next weekend. “Pastor will use a ninth engine in Abu Dhabi,” confirmed technical boss Mark Gillan. Before the Delhi race, Williams chairman Adam Parr urged engine partner Cosworth to up its game. “We have had some reliability issues in the last three weekends, which our partner is working very hard to fix as soon as possible and, obviously, that’s critically important for us,” he said. After the Interlagos finale late this month, the team is switching to Renault power for 2012. “We are supplying engines to them because we think they have much greater potential than they are delivering today,” said the French marque’s chairman Carlos Ghosn, according to The Sun. |

Boullier admits ‘plan B’ talks with CosworthComments Off Eric Boullier has confirmed reports that the Genii-owned formula one team, currently known as Renault, held recent talks with independent engine supplier Cosworth. Currently, the team uses Renault engines, but it is Red Bull who are now considered the French carmaker’s works team. Boss Boullier said the team is “very close” to inking a new engine supply deal with Renault Sport F1. “You obviously always have to have a B plan and a C plan and, yes, we have been approached by Cosworth because they have lost customers and they are talking to everybody in the pitlane I guess, or nearly everybody,” he said. “But there are no plans (to switch to Cosworth).” Asked if Renault is very much the team’s A-plan, he insisted: “Of course. We have a historical package. “We still have some very close technical relationship and there is (sponsor) Total mixed in the middle of this as well, so there is some commercial reason why we should stick with Renault,” added Boullier. |

Rivals guarantee two F1 customers for CosworthComments Off Cosworth is staying in formula one and designing a V6 engine even though it only has two customers for 2012. The independent Northampton based engine maker said when it returned to F1 in 2010 that it needed a minimum number of customers to make its programme viable. But when asked if Cosworth can survive with only two teams on the books, boss Mark Gallagher told Auto Motor und Sport: “We can.” He explains: “We regard each of our customer contracts as a separate deal. Each has fixed costs: engine, support at the track, development, individual adjustment to the car. “So there is a profit with each deal. With regards to 2012, instead of having three separate profits, there will be only two.” Chief executive Tim Routsis expands: “In 2010 we supplied mainly new teams, and no one knew whether they would survive. It would not have made sense if we had not taken a potential collapse of one of these teams into account. “As a fourth team, Williams was for us rather a bonus,” he added. And Routsis said it was always clear that Williams might jump ship at any moment. “(Chairman) Adam Parr was always quite clear with us, saying from the outset that they would jump at the first chance of being with a car manufacturer,” he said. As for the future, Cosworth is happy with the change of plan from four-cylinder to V6 engines to debut in 2014. Said Gallagher: “For the four cylinder there was no cost-curbing device. The big manufacturers were counting on at least EUR 60 million for development, while for us we are dependent on the payments from our customers.” He added that the V6 rules restrict development costs much more effectively. “We also have a customer guarantee,” revealed Gallagher. “Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault have committed that at least two customers will stay with us. Three would be ideal.” Auto Motor und Sport speculated that Cosworth has set its sights on signing Force India, or the team currently known as Lotus Renault GP. |
