Briatore writing rules for ‘GP1′ series(0) Flavio Briatore could be readying to burst back into formula one. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport said the ousted and formerly banned Italian is busily writing regulations for a ‘GP1′ championship. They could be adopted should the FIA not sign up to the 2013 Concorde Agreement, according to the report. Apparently, the political rumblings in F1 at present are not limited to the sport’s planned floatation, or Bernie Ecclestone’s spat with Mercedes. Cost-control is also a buzzword. As reported recently, the vast majority of F1′s teams want the FIA to enshrine cost-cutting in the actual sporting regulations, even to the point of pushing for a once highly-controversial budget cap. F1 chief executive Ecclestone, however, is not famously close with the FIA’s new president Jean Todt, and according to Auto Motor und Sport he is not convinced that the Paris federation needs to write and control the rules. Enter Briatore. The German report said Ferrari will be a fan of the former Renault chief’s rumoured regulations, as they steer away from the premium on aerodynamics. |

2013 F1 budget cap possible(0) It is possible formula one teams will be limited to a budget cap in 2013, according to Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. The budget cap idea saw the sport almost implode amid the bitter political war of 2009, when proposed by controversial former FIA president Max Mosley. But it is back on the agenda in 2012, and according to new rules – where a majority of teams can now push through a change – it could be imposed next season. “Ten of the 12 teams are in favour,” Auto Motor und Sport said, referring to the push to have cost-cutting moved from the FOTA gentleman’s agreement to the actual sporting regulations. It means that the two dissenting teams, the Red Bull-owned Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso, will have no say. “The cost to be competitive in formula one at present is too high,” the boss of the energy drink company’s premier team, Christian Horner, said recently. “I don’t think anybody will dispute that. “The debate is how we achieve it.” Not only that, the German report said nine teams are in favour of Mosley’s old budget cap idea, with annual expenditure limited initially to EUR 170 million and then diminishing to 100 million over a few seasons. |

Vettel shrugs at F1′s ‘crazy’ pecking order(0) Five races in, F1′s cleverest brains are still yet to decode the mystery of the bizarre and fascinating 2012 season. As was the case when he utterly dominated last year, Sebastian Vettel is still leading the drivers’ points chase. But, before last weekend, if he had been told that Williams’ Pastor Maldonado would be the winner of the Spanish grand prix, the German admitted: “Well, I would have put a lot of money on them! “I think the odds weren’t bad,” he smiled. Indeed, the major British bookmaker William Hill was taking bets at 500-1 prior to the Barcelona weekend. A spokesman confirmed that only two bets at 10 pounds or above were placed on Maldonado prior to qualifying. “I’m sure Williams don’t understand why they just won the race here,” McLaren’s Jenson Button is quoted by the Guardian newspaper. But the previously-derided ‘pay driver’ Maldonado is not the only potential new winner in 2012, after Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg and Vettel won the opening four grands prix. A detailed look at F1′s specialist reporting in the past few weeks shows that Lewis Hamilton, Mark Webber, Kimi Raikkonen, Romain Grosjean, Michael Schumacher, Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi are all also widely regarded as genuine victory candidates in 2012. And given that their teammates have won grands prix this season, even the struggling Felipe Massa and Bruno Senna should be added to that list. “Dammit, let’s go for (HRT’s) Karthikeyan!” wrote Chris Hockley in the Sun newspaper. “It’s really quite crazy right now,” Vettel, who despite his young age would count himself among F1′s currently perplexed purists, told Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. “What’s happening is difficult for us to explain,” he added. The situation has split the F1 audience, with the purists shaking their heads, and others marvelling at the unprecedented spectacle. “The spectacle has taken over the sport,” said the Paris daily Le Figaro. “Even the teams can’t be sure who will be the hare and who will be the tortoise at any given track,” wrote Hockley. Alonso, who is the joint championship leader, is in the purists’ camp. “Of course it is attractive for the spectators that we are going to Monaco not knowing if we will fight for victory or be left out of the points,” he is quoted by El Pais. “But in a way, after eleven years in formula one and now I’m at Ferrari, I would like to have more stability,” the Spaniard admitted. Sir Jackie Stewart said: “What’s going on is unbelievable, which I think is the outcome of the new rules, new tyres — I think it’s many factors,” he told the Spanish sports daily AS. “What’s happening,” said Maldonado’s race engineer Xevi Pujolar, “is that these tyres are allowing teams who do not have the biggest budgets to be eligible for really good results. “The reason is that the most important thing now is to have a good setup and also some luck with the temperature.” Pirelli, F1′s tyre maker, has received both criticism and praise for its huge role. “Pirelli have been both bold and brave,” Sun journalist Hockley said. “It can’t be easy for a manufacturer to make tyres that sometimes wear out faster than you can say Mercedes.” Marco Tronchetti Provera, the Italian marque’s company chief, is unapologetic. “What we have provided is what the teams have asked for, and it was not easy,” Italian language reports quote him saying. “Our engineers have done an extraordinary thing.” |

Pirelli criticism shows Schumacher frustration(0) An obvious tension was evident at Mugello when Pirelli’s Paul Hembery was asked about Michael Schumacher. The seven time world champion had slammed F1′s official supplier after Bahrain, arguing that the 2012 tyres degrade so quickly it makes driving a grand prix car as slow as a safety car. “We haven’t spoken,” Briton Hembery is quoted by Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. “I’ve just read something on the net about the tyres from his teammate Nico Rosberg which is very different.” Asked if Schumacher’s criticism was irritating, he answered: “We built the tyres the way we were asked to. “The FIA, Bernie Ecclestone, even the teams wanted it this way. The spokesman for the teams at the time was Ross Brawn, Schumacher’s team boss. “There have been four different winners in the four races so far, which alone shows that we must have done something right,” Hembery insisted. “As a fan I would be thrilled.” Asked if he can at least understand Schumacher’s frustration, he continued: “The four winners this year have not won by chance. “They were absolutely the best drivers in those races and all of them were faster than their teammates. “I can understand that Michael was frustrated at the last race. Among the four winners so far were two Germans, and then you had Kimi (Raikkonen), who in the fourth race of his comeback is on the podium. “Racers are winners; they’re not happy unless they’re winning.” Hembery denied that tyres have, in 2012, become more important than the cars or drivers. “That’s a misconception,” he insisted. “The driver has a huge impact. “Anyway I’m convinced that at Silverstone at the latest the teams will have the problem under control. Just as they did last year.” Finally, he insisted that Pirelli is not going to make any knee-jerk reactions. “If there are 23 drivers satisfied and only one dissatisfied, then I don’t think we need to change something,” Hembery is quoted by Bild newspaper. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso, however, acknowledged a slight frustration. “For the top teams it’s a bit frustrating,” he told La Stampa newspaper, “when it’s difficult to exploit all your potential. “It’s like Real Madrid, Barcelona and AC Milan suddenly playing with the budget of Cesena.” |

France rushing to complete GP deal(0) The French government is dashing to seal the lid on the country’s return to F1. Bernie Ecclestone has said a deal has been reached to annually alternate a race between Paul Ricard in France and Belgium’s fabled Spa-Francorchamps. But the final signature and official announcement are still missing. David Douillet, the French sports minister, told Le Journal du Dimanche that the chance France will be on the 2013 calendar is “90 per cent”. “The contract is going back and forth between the lawyers. I hope I get to London to meet with Bernie Ecclestone between Wednesday and Friday,” he added. The newspaper said Douillet is dashing to complete the deal by this weekend’s presidential election, because socialist frontrunner Francois Hollande has hinted the grand prix project would be reviewed if he is elected. Douillet admitted that it is “very likely” Hollande would “bury” the race. Le JDD newspaper said organisers and Ecclestone have agreed the race sanctioning fee, EUR 22 million, which is still a few million short of guaranteeing a balanced budget. And “without a balanced budget, we do not sign,” he warned. “The state, which does not participate financially, is still the guarantor of any debt.” There also remains an odd silence from the Belgian side, who have not confirmed that Spa is the circuit that will alternate with France. |

Haug: Mercedes reaches F1 summit with ‘small budget’Comments Off Norbert Haug said he is proud Mercedes has reached the top of formula one in a short space of time and with a small budget. The German carmaker’s works team is often lumped together with F1′s other grandees including Ferrari and McLaren, but Haug insists the Brackley based outfit is in fact “a small team, with a small budget”. Mercedes’ competition boss, who on Sunday collected the winning constructors’ trophy on the Shanghai podium, also said some of the team’s rivals – undoubtedly Red Bull – “took five years to win”. “We have done it in two and a quarter,” the German told the RTL broadcaster. “That’s not bad at all. “And there are other teams that still have not made it.” So is Mercedes now a contender for the world championship, despite Haug’s earlier protestations that the team needs a few more campaigns under its belt for that? “It is too early to make a prediction,” he told Auto Motor und Sport. “I hope so, but so far we have seen three different winners in three races.” The newest of those winners is Nico Rosberg, who along with Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve are the only sons of F1 drivers to have also gone on to win grands prix. It is a good omen for Rosberg that both Hill and Villeneuve also won titles. Rosberg’s former Williams teammate, Alex Wurz, has high praise. “As a teammate (in 2007) he made my life difficult because he was such a fantastic qualifying driver. In the race it was then always okay. “But for this (race win) he deserves praise,” Wurz told the Austrian ORF broadcaster, “because he did everything after his pole position also sensationally.” But in Bahrain, there could be another winner, triple world champion Niki Lauda remarked. “I have never before seen F1 as interesting as this,” said the Austrian legend. “Every race we see another winner.” |

Lack of development budget ‘a shame’Comments Off Sauber is in a race for money after discovering its 2012 car is up to speed with F1′s richest teams. As ever in formula one, world championships are won not on the basis of a clever initial design, but on a team’s ability to continue to develop it throughout a long season. According to O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper, the formerly BMW-owned Sauber team’s chief executive Monisha Kaltenborn admits that the Hinwil based outfit cannot compete on that front with the likes of McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull. “It’s a shame,” she is quoted as saying. “I hope we can show enough potential so that some companies decide to invest in our project,” said Kaltenborn, with the Brazilian newspaper estimating that Sauber’s budget is EUR 80 million this year. In contrast, the top four teams’ budgets are believed to be all above EUR 220m. Kaltenborn told F1′s official website recently that Sauber would back a push to impose a budget cap — an issue that triggered the big teams’ bitter political war with former FIA president Max Mosley a few years ago. “We … have also openly said that we are not satisfied with our sponsor situation because we have high targets and to achieve them you need appropriate funding,” she continued. “We still need to work on that side of things, as of course the more funding you have the more you can develop — and it shows on the track. “I have said before that when we look back we practically never had enough money to do what we really wanted to. The question is always how big the gap is — sometimes it is bigger, sometimes it is smaller.” |

Sauber undecided on copying Mercedes F-ductComments Off Sauber has revealed it cannot afford to simply jump in and copy Mercedes’ innovative F-duct solution. The small Swiss team had almost winning race pace in Malaysia last weekend even without the extra straight-line speed that would be provided by a system along the lines of Mercedes’ DRS-complimenting concept. Despite their complaints about the legality of the system, there is little doubt the big-budget teams will be working frantically to emulate the Mercedes’ concept, which to date has the blessing of the FIA. According to Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport, however, it will be a different story for the smaller teams. “If we started now with a blank sheet of paper, we would be ready in two months,” said Sauber’s chief designer Matt Morris. “But it would really add up. We have to ask ourselves whether it’s worth it for us, or whether we would be better off chasing the laptime with more conventional steps. “On the other hand the big teams can handle a development like that in parallel to their normal programmes,” he added. Also on the technical front, Auto Motor und Sport reveals that rival teams are closer to getting to the bottom of Red Bull’s ever-flexible front wings. After the last day of testing in Barcelona, detailed photographs emerged of Sebastian Vettel’s stricken RB8 that appeared to show a sort of torsion bar inside the damaged front wing. The report said the torsion bar may be pre-loaded in order to pass the FIA’s static load tests, but then bend at speed. An FIA insider suggested the system, although permitted in private testing, “would not be allowed” at the actual grands prix. |

Button, Alesi tip Lotus to shine at SepangComments Off Two experts have tipped Lotus to shine this weekend at Sepang. Seeing the chequered flag first in Melbourne was McLaren’s championship leader Jenson Button, but he said he is expecting a “strong fight” this weekend. “Of course we’re not relaxing,” said the Briton. “Both Red Bull drivers were very quick in the race (in Australia), and I think we can expect further strong challenges (in Malaysia) from Mercedes and Lotus,” added Button. Also anticipating a Malaysian push by Lotus is team ambassador Jean Alesi, the former Ferrari race winner. “The car should suit Sepang well,” said the Frenchman. “In testing in Jerez and Barcelona it was particularly good in the fast turns, which is what defines the Malaysia track. “Lotus appear to be quicker than everyone except McLaren,” added Alesi. He is worried, however, that the former Renault team might not be able to keep up its pace throughout 2012. “Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari have much bigger budgets,” said Alesi. “They have a brilliant team at Enstone but it is really tough to match the development pace of the biggest teams, and I think that will be Lotus’ challenge this year.” |

De la Rosa: ‘Obvious’ HRT needs more backingComments Off Pedro de la Rosa has defended the viability of struggling HRT, despite its new owners trying to build up a formula one team in the mist of a near-unprecedented economic crisis. The F112, bearing more than a striking resemblance to the Dallara-designed 2010 and 2011 car, was launched recently with a new livery but only two visible sponsors. Asked whether it is a good time to push ahead in Spain with a formula one project, lead driver de la Rosa said: “Any moment can be good. “There is a large labour force in Spain, highly educated and motivated people, young people pushing hard and experienced people.” But in formula one, money is the fuel and it’s difficult to come by at present. “This is a time of crisis,” de la Rosa acknowledged to DPA news agency, “and also it has been noticed in formula one and budgets have gone down.” He admitted, however, that HRT will have to attract more backing in order to survive. “If the (financial) injection does not come, it is going to be difficult,” said the 41-year-old. “We need sponsors, investors who believe in the project, to help us to grow. “It’s obvious, we need it, but first we need to build a foundation so it can be seen that it is profitable to invest in our team,” he added. |

Valencia on verge of F1 exitComments Off Valencia could be mere days from dropping off the formula one calendar. “We are still negotiating,” a spokesman is quoted as saying. The Spanish region’s president Alberto Fabra said recently his government, amid the worsening European economic crisis, was reviewing its commitment to F1. The Diario AS newspaper said the contract demands the 2012 race fee be made by March 9. “Formula one is not our primary concern,” Fabra is quoted as saying when asked about the risk of contract breach. When asked specifically whether or not the fee has been paid to Ecclestone, he answered: “I don’t know, I cannot say.” It is also an uncertain time for Spain’s other F1 host Barcelona, with the regional Catalonian government pushing to annually alternate its race with Valencia in future. “For budgetary reasons, this (solution) would be best,” said a spokesman for Catalan president Artur Mas. |

Willis still at HRT for nowComments Off Geoff Willis has not left the HRT team yet, a spokeswoman for the Spanish team insisted on Friday. It has been reported in recent days that Briton Willis – the former Red Bull, Williams and Honda technical chief – was leaving due to not being happy about the plans for the 2012 budget and car. The reports also said former BMW and Brawn designer Jorg Zander is set to join HRT. The team’s communciations boss Maria Serrat said on Friday that Willis is officially “still rendering his services to HRT”. It is understood, however, that the 51-year-old will definitely not be leading the 2012 car project. |

D’Ambrosio says Glock ‘reference’ at VirginComments Off Jerome d’Ambrosio has acknowledged the importance of his teammate Timo Glock to the Virgin team. The 29-year-old switched to the startup Virgin outfit last year and he was recently re-signed through 2014. Belgian rookie d’Ambrosio acknowledged Glock’s leading role. “He is the reference of the team, and therefore mine as well,” the 25-year-old told France’s Auto Hebdo magazine. Virgin Racing – and fellow 2010 startups Team Lotus and HRT – are yet to score a point formula one. D’Ambrosio replaced 2010 Virgin driver Lucas di Grassi this year, but it is believed he is likely to stay put for next season. “I am really happy with the team and I think they are happy with me as well,” he said, “so at the moment we are speaking (about 2012) and hopefully we will be able to work together again.” |

D’Ambrosio still working to outpace GlockComments Off Jerome d’Ambrosio has admitted he is still working to get up to speed gainst his Virgin teammate. “Clearly I still need to improve my Saturdays,” d’Ambrosio told La Libre newspaper. Glock made his F1 debut with Jordan in 2004, but he also raced with the top-budget Toyota team in 2008 and 2009 before moving to the start-up Virgin last season. “His experience is the most prominent on stop and go tracks like Valencia, or Canada where there is little grip and braking is therefore difficult. “I still have more to understand to get the last tenths in those conditions. But I’m not ashamed to say he was simply stronger,” added d’Ambrosio. He added: “What I’m thrilled about is that on race pace, I was consistently with his times.” There have been reports that Virgin is preparing to abandon the 2011 project in order to be much stronger next year, but d’Ambrosio insists there are “many things” the team is doing to be stronger this season. “We do not want to end up with the red lantern,” he said, referring to Virgin’s battle to avoid finishing the world championship in last place. |

Marko scoffs at Red Bull ‘biggest spender’ claimsComments Off Helmut Marko has scoffed at claims Red Bull is now formula one’s biggest spender. “Those figures are completely wrong; the truth is less than half of that,” team consultant Dr Marko told Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport. The Austrian implied that the false numbers were released maliciously. “Either someone spread these false figures deliberately, or he cannot read a balance sheet,” said Marko. He said Red Bull Racing actually ranks as the fourth-highest spender in pitlane, with Auto Motor und Sport claiming the team’s true budget is closer to EUR 160m. There is some bad feeling in the paddock at present, as Red Bull is accused of breaking the Resource Restriction Agreement last year. With the disagreement not yet resolved, the team is refusing to agree to a new agreement for 2011. “We are not opposed to saving, it’s just that it can’t only benefit the teams that are not good enough by only restricting the aerodynamics. “We say yes to savings, if the engine areas are affected in the same way,” insisted Marko. He said Red Bull is also opposed to financial penalties being paid to the other teams to “supplement their budgets”, arguing that those found guilty of breaking the agreement should instead pay fines “for the promotion of the sport, or to charity”. |
