Schumacher: Double-DRS protest ‘the normal game’Comments Off Michael Schumacher has dismissed the attempt to have Mercedes’ innovative ‘double-DRS’ system banned. Having twice previously rejected rivals’ claims the concept is illegal, the FIA late on Thursday threw out Lotus’ official protest. Seven time world champion Schumacher, who drives for Mercedes, admitted in China he doubts Lotus really thinks the system breaches any rules. “If someone has a good idea, we always have this sort of dispute,” the famous German told Bild newspaper. “It (the dispute is) because it’s going to take too long for the other teams to do the same thing. It’s the normal game,” said Schumacher. It is believed McLaren and Sauber are working on their own versions of the double-DRS, as are the reigning world champions Red Bull. “We have been working on it for some time,” a Red Bull source told O Estado de S.Paulo’s Livio Oricchio, “but it’s not easy to get even two small tubes down the entire length of the car, front to rear,” he admitted. Oricchio said Ferrari is also working on a version, to debut no later than next month’s Spanish grand prix. |

McLaren not yet ready with own F-ductComments Off McLaren is not yet ready to roll out a Mercedes-style ‘F-duct’ to complement its highly competitive 2012 car. Despite Mercedes struggling with tyres in the actual races so far, the W03 is a standout qualifying performer, thanks in part to the so-nicknamed front and rear ‘super-DRS’ system. Red Bull, Lotus and perhaps even Ferrari are threatening to protest, but until now McLaren – with arguably the dominant package of the 2012 season so far – has stayed out of the argument. “We don’t have a strong view one way or the other,” technical director Paddy Lowe confirmed during the regular Vodafone media teleconference on Tuesday. The F-duct will remain a hot topic in China this weekend, with Lotus’ technical boss James Allison believed to be armed with two new arguments against its legality. It was thought McLaren was quite advanced with its own version of the system. But Lowe revealed: “Until we’ve got clarity it’s difficult for us to commit a huge about of effort in that direction. So that’s where we are at the moment.” He steered away from suggestions Mercedes, including boss Ross Brawn, have flouted the “spirit” of the recent F-duct ban. “There’s no such thing as the spirit of the rules,” insisted Lowe, admitting that if there was a ‘spirit’ of the DRS rule, the Mercedes system is “definitely” in breach. “The debate around whether they can keep that system on the car is not about whether it is in that spirit or not, it’s about whether the text of the regulations means they can’t,” he explained. |

Ecclestone: Bahrain boycott would breach teams’ contractsComments Off Bernie Ecclestone has admitted F1 teams will breach their contracts if they do not race in Bahrain next weekend. Earlier, as the controversy surrounding the sport’s continued plans to travel to the troubled island Kingdom deepens, an unnamed team boss admitted his peers would prefer if the event was called off. The Times newspaper then quoted F1 chief executive Ecclestone as saying that “If the teams don’t want to go, then we cannot make them”. “We’ve no way we can force people to go there,” he also told the PA Sport news agency on Tuesday. But in actual fact, teams are contractually bound to race at each event on the F1 calendar, with breaches punishable by exclusion from the sport. “We can’t say ‘you’ve got to go’ – although they would be in breach of their agreement with us if they didn’t go – but it doesn’t help,” the 81-year-old clarified. “Commercially they have to go, but whether they decide to or not is up to them,” said Ecclestone. “I’ve had no one say anything other than ‘we’re going to be racing in Bahrain’.” He said the local race organisers, and the national sanctioning body, are the ones that could cancel the race. F1′s governing body, meanwhile, is the FIA. “I’ve spoken to (FIA president) Mr (Jean) Todt,” Ecclestone revealed, “we keep in close contact, and he’s going out there (to China), so we’ll have a chat then, and we always meet with the teams.” It also emerged on Tuesday that Ecclestone has phoned Dr Ala’a Shehabi, a prominent Bahraini journalist and activist. She revealed that Ecclestone wants Bahrain’s government opposition to “have a press conference” at the grand prix “in which opposition can get their message across”. Shehabi said Ecclestone is “very concerned” about the situation in Bahrain, including the fate of human rights activist Abdulhadi Alkhawaja, who amid his hunger strike in jail is said to be close to death. |

Sauber names Kaltenborn as future successorComments Off Monisha Kaltenborn will become F1′s first ever female team boss. That is the revelation of Peter Sauber, who at the age of 68 has hinted he might call it a day before his 70th birthday. Indian Kaltenborn, 41, is already Hinwil based Sauber’s chief executive, while Peter Sauber remains the team principal. “I have always said that I will not be sitting on the pitwall as a 70 year old,” Sauber told Der Sonntag newspaper. “With certainty, my successor is Monisha Kaltenborn. That is for sure. When it (the handover) happens is still open. “She will be the first female team boss in formula one history,” Sauber continued. “She’s been with us for 13 years, always with leading roles. I’m sure she will do the job very well.” Sauber, in fact, has already departed the pitwall once before, when he sold his team to BMW and handed over to Mario Theissen. Somewhat reluctantly, he returned in 2010, having rescued the Hinwil based employees in the wake of German carmaker’s sudden withdrawal. “I could not jump into the breach a second time,” smiled Sauber, hinting that his retirement this time around would be final. |

Updated Ferrari to take cues from SauberComments Off Ferrari is planning to follow Sauber’s lead when the first major development of the disappointing F2012 car is unveiled soon. “No doubt about it,” Fernando Alonso said after winning the Malaysian grand prix, “they (Sauber) were quicker than us.” The Italian magazine Autosprint have mischievously christened the updated Ferrari a ‘Ferrauber’, explaining that the rear of the ‘B’ F2012 will be very similar to Sauber’s impressive C31. Right at the end of the pre-season test period, Red Bull rolled out a Sauber-esque solution at the rear of Adrian Newey’s 2012 car, the RB8. In the wake of the blown diffuser clampdown, the Sauber exhaust layout reportedly flies close to breaching the spirit of the 2012 rules, but the FIA has declared it legal. “We are not in a position to be able to say exactly how much aerodynamic influence each individual system has,” said the governing body’s technical delegate Charlie Whiting. “Hence, it’s impossible for us to say ‘That’s too much, or that’s ok’. The aim of the new regulation was to ensure that we don’t have to do that,” he explained. So, Ferrari looks to be the next in line to copy Sauber’s rear solution, particularly as the small Swiss team already uses Ferrari’s engine and gearbox. It is believed the new 2012 Ferrari gearbox is narrower than last year’s unit. Autosprint reports that the F2012 ‘Ferrauber’ will also be similar to the Sauber in the area of the sidepods. |

Vettel not apologising after Karthikeyan attackComments Off World champion Sebastian Vettel was unapologetic this week, having shown his Indian rival Narain Karthikeyan the middle finger recently in Malaysia. The German also called the HRT-driving backmarker a “gherkin” and “idiot” in the aftermath of their Sepang clash that cost Vettel fourth place. “I lost a solid fourth place so that’s obviously disappointing,” the 24-year-old is quoted by German media, including Sport Bild, after being asked this week about his loss of temper at Karthikeyan. It was suggested Vettel might have breached the FIA’s code of conduct, but it is believed the governing body has decided the stewards properly investigated the incident in Malaysia. And Vettel is unapologetic. “Sometimes you let some emotion show and I don’t think someone should be ashamed about that,” he said. “It’s part of the sport.” Vettel, having utterly dominated a year ago, is now just sixth in the drivers’ points standings after two races. “Of course I would have preferred a slightly better start (to 2011),” he admitted, “but it’s a long season. “We have a very good car and I still have a good chance — it is still the goal to fight for the title,” he said in Paris, where he accepted the ‘Grands Prix de l’Academie des Sports 2011′ award. “Only a few hours ago I was in the simulator, preparing for China and Bahrain. We should hopefully have a few good improvements, but we need to prove that at the tracks,” said Vettel. |

Vettel not in trouble, Marko insistsComments Off Dr Helmut Marko has denied reports Sebastian Vettel was summoned to Red Bull’s headquarters this week to explain his behaviour at the recent Malaysian grand prix. The Narain Karthikeyan-saga aside, reports suggested the German deliberately ignored his bosses’ instruction that he retire his RB8 – ostensibly due to a brake issue – so that he could fit a new gearbox without penalty in China. The reports suggested Vettel had confessed immediately after the race that he heard the instruction but chose to ignore it. “That is all nonsense,” Red Bull’s motor racing consultant Marko told Sport Bild. “Sebastian did nothing – absolutely nothing – that was against our wishes.” Marko said Vettel’s visit to Milton Keynes this week was scheduled long ago, adding that he will be working inside the driver simulator amongst other things. He also hit back at claims the 24-year-old could be penalised by the FIA for breaching the code of conduct when he showed the ‘middle finger’ to Karthikeyan. “The matter was resolved during the meeting with the stewards (in Malaysia). For me, the case is closed.” Speaking to Kolner Express newspaper, however, an FIA spokesman confirmed that the code of conduct forbids superlicense holders from insulting their rivals. But he added: “I imagine the application of this paragraph was considered by the stewards in Malaysia.” And Sebastian Vettel’s spokeswoman said: “We know of no investigation.” |

FIA ‘not aware’ of penalty risk for obscene Vettel gestureComments Off F1′s governing body has played down claims Sebastian Vettel faces a penalty for his behaviour during the Malaysian grand prix. After the race, the reigning world champion dismissed HRT’s Narain Karthikeyan as an “idiot” following their on-track collision. On-board footage subsequently proved that Red Bull driver Vettel, 24, twice showed his Indian driver a ‘middle finger’ salute. Reports in Germany suggested the behaviour was a breach of the stricter code of conduct under FIA president Jean Todt, with the German theoretically facing anything from a warning to the revocation of his superlicense. “My understanding is these matters are dealt with by stewards at each grand prix,” an FIA spokesman told us. “I am not aware of any other action being contemplated.” Karthikeyan, who was penalised after the clash, told the Hindustan Times newspaper that the stewards favoured world champion Vettel’s explanation. “They (the stewards) didn’t care about what I had to say because Mr Vettel told them god knows what when he went and talked to them,” he said. But Red Bull team boss Christian Horner defended Vettel, telling the Mirror that it is “Karthikeyan’s responsibility to get out of the way for the leaders”. Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg, meanwhile, partly excused Vettel’s outbursts. “I think Vettel was just emotional at that point of time. At the end of the day, he is just human and sometimes you get emotional,” the German is quoted by the Times of India. Former driver Adrian Sutil goes even further. “I can understand him (Vettel),” he told Die Welt newspaper in Germany. “I was often angry when I was lapping people, when they make no room for you while they are fighting for places that have almost no significance. “Karthikeyan ended up influencing not only Vettel’s race, but also Jenson Button’s. They (backmarkers) have to understand that as well.” |

Vettel risks penalty for ‘middle finger’ tiradeComments Off The FIA could sanction F1′s reigning back-to-back world champion for his behaviour during the recent Malaysian grand prix. Before calling backmarker Narain Karthikeyan a “gherkin” and “idiot” in the wake of their collision, Sebastian Vettel was captured by his on-board camera twice displaying his middle-finger to the Indian driver. “I think he’s highly frustrated because he’s having a tough season,” Karthikeyan told the Deccan Chronicle on Wednesday. “It’s completely unprofessional to blame me for the incident. The derogatory remark only goes to show him in bad light. “Just because he has a good car, he can’t call others an idiot,” Karthikeyan continued. “I have won races in all the previous single-seater championships I have participated in so I don’t need a certificate from Vettel.” Reports in Germany, including in the Kolner Express, Bild and Die Welt newspapers, claim that Red Bull driver’s behaviour may have breached the new stricter code of conduct introduced by FIA president Jean Todt. The FIA has been contacted for comment. “He has breached the code of conduct,” former F1 driver Marc Surer told Germany’s Sky television. “You sign it when you get the license and then you have to behave correspondingly. “Any behaviour that hurts other people or the sport is an offense,” added the Swiss. Asked what the penalties might be, Surer explained: “Anything from a warning to a license revocation. In this case I think it was quite understandable and there will be a mild punishment, if there is anything.” Hans-Joachim Stuck, however, is slightly less forgiving. “When you’re overtaking, misunderstandings can occur. I think Vettel needs to learn this. “With him, the curve was always upwards and now it’s not the case, and he needs to deal with that,” the German legend told the DAPD news agency. As for Vettel’s description of Karthikeyan as a “gherkin”, Stuck insisted: “It’s better than ‘asshole’.” Vettel’s attack, however, was sustained, with Kleine Zeitung newspaper now quoting the Red Bull driver as having said: “Maybe formula one is not the place to learn how to drive.” Stuck responded: “If Sebastian had left more space, it would not have happened. It happens sometimes so it’s a racing incident. “He (Karthikeyan) didn’t do it on purpose and it always takes two.” The HRT driver hit back by calling Vettel a “bully”, and even David Coulthard – a Red Bull team consultant – defended Karthikeyan. “He can’t make his car invisible,” the Scot is quoted as saying by the Mirror. Also defending Karthikeyan was Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg, who told the Indian press this week: “From what I saw, it was not Narain’s fault. “So I don’t really understand why he (Vettel) said all that.” Hukenberg’s Force India teammate Paul di Resta added: “Narain is entitled to do as much on the track in comparison with someone like Vettel. “Both are F1 drivers and are there to represent their teams.” |

Red Bull: Mercedes has breached teams’ agreementComments Off Red Bull has stepped up the technical row with Mercedes by accusing the German team of breaching a gentlemen’s agreement. “They are not complying with the agreement of the technical working group,” said Christian Horner. Adrian Newey also told Auto Bild Motorsport: “The FIA has allowed the system, but Mercedes has gone against the gentlemen’s agreement of the teams.” He is apparently referring to a meeting last year in which teams informally agreed not to pursue certain technical directions. |

Red Bull isolated as rivals push for cost-cut rulesComments Off Red Bull has been isolated from F1′s other teams, as the FIA is asked to step in and police their cost-cutting efforts. But the agreement was only an initiative of the teams’ trade union FOTA, which has now essentially collapsed. Moreover, the agreement includes only financial sanctions for breaches, and Red Bull was never penalised anyway — Ferrari’s Luca di Montezemolo said recently he didn’t push the issue “Because I didn’t want it to be an excuse for our performance”. A letter has now been addressed to FIA president Jean Todt requesting that the governing body step in and make the RRA an official sporting regulation. Breaches would therefore carry a sporting sanction, such as the loss of points, or race bans. “Yes, it (the letter) was unanimous. Most of the teams have signed it,” said Lotus team boss Eric Boullier. He would not, however, confirm the identity of the teams that did not sign. But a report in the Kolner Express newspaper claims “only two teams did not sign: Red Bull and the sister team Toro Rosso”. |

Valencia on verge of F1 exitComments Off Valencia could be mere days from dropping off the formula one calendar. “We are still negotiating,” a spokesman is quoted as saying. The Spanish region’s president Alberto Fabra said recently his government, amid the worsening European economic crisis, was reviewing its commitment to F1. The Diario AS newspaper said the contract demands the 2012 race fee be made by March 9. “Formula one is not our primary concern,” Fabra is quoted as saying when asked about the risk of contract breach. When asked specifically whether or not the fee has been paid to Ecclestone, he answered: “I don’t know, I cannot say.” It is also an uncertain time for Spain’s other F1 host Barcelona, with the regional Catalonian government pushing to annually alternate its race with Valencia in future. “For budgetary reasons, this (solution) would be best,” said a spokesman for Catalan president Artur Mas. |

Whitmarsh: Team unity can survive FOTA turmoilComments Off Lotus could become the next team to withdraw from the formula one teams association FOTA. Now, this week, team owner Gerard Lopez has been quoted as admitting that Lotus is contemplating pulling out. The reasons for the withdrawals appear different, with Red Bull having been accused of breaching the gentleman’s Resource Restriction Agreement (RRA) and Ferrari rumoured to want to use its individual power to shape the future of the sport’s rules and structure. The formerly BMW-owned Sauber, however, insisted that recent cost-cutting in formula one has not made it easier for smaller teams to survive. “The RRA was a step in the right direction, but now other steps must urgently follow,” he told F1′s official website. “It definitely has not become easier for the smaller teams.” But beneath the surface, unity has not broken down completely, argues McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh, who doubles as the FOTA chairman. It is true, for example, that the new non-FOTA members will continue to respect aspects of the body’s agreements, such as the summer factory closure. “I’m not too hung up on the brand ‘FOTA’,” Whitmarsh said recently. “I think what’s important is that the teams realise there are critical issues within this sport where it will be better if we cooperate and take sensible decisions, and I hope and believe that we’ll continue to do that.” He added last month: “Relations between McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari remain very good indeed.” |

Mosley scandal moves on to French courtComments Off Almost four years after the News of the World scandal first broke, Max Mosley is still chasing the saga in court. But despite winning a similar case in Britain, his lawyers have been in France’s Tribunal de Grande Instance this week pressing another case against the report’s chief reporter. Because the News of the World report and video footage was available within France, Mosley sued journalist Neville Thurlbeck for defamation and breach of privacy. He is seeking EUR 100,000 in damages from both the News of the World and Thurlbeck, according to The Guardian. “Every copy of the paper distributed was a thorn in the skin of Mr Mosley. Every one was a prejudice,” said Mosley’s lawyer Philippe Ouakrat. But Thurlbeck’s lawyer told the hearing on Tuesday that Mosley should not be able to sue twice for the same offense. “Mr Mosley has already gained satisfaction in England,” said Jean-Frederic Gaultier. “This case here is not about justice but about vengeance.” |

DRS breach leads to rules clarificationComments Off A vague regulation was cleared up at Silverstone after Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber were summoned by the stewards. But McLaren, testing a new rear wing configuration ahead of the British grand prix, exploited a loophole in the rules that makes no mention of DRS being banned when the car is fitted with slick tyres. “The stewards just wanted to understand so that they could tighten the wording of the regulations for the next race,” Hamilton confirmed. The stewards, including 1992 world champion Nigel Mansell, took no action against the 2008 world champion or Red Bull’s Webber. |
