Brawn plays down ‘new F-duct’ hypeComments Off Ross Brawn has moved to play down the hype surrounding Mercedes’ new so-called ‘F-duct’ solutions. It is the talk of the paddock, and in Friday’s second practice session, Michael Schumacher topped the times with the W03 car, featuring front and rear F-ducts. When asked about the new ‘F-ducts’, team boss Brawn said in Melbourne: “I’m surprised they (people) are calling it that, because I don’t quite know what that means. “We have an interesting system on the car and it’s not complicated at all, so I’m sure other teams are looking at it and they need to decide if it’s worthwhile or not.” It is such a big talking point this weekend because, in 2009, the Brackley based team – then Brawn GP – raced to the title as the first to perfect a double-diffuser. And last year, it was the now-banned blown exhausts that set the pace. But Brawn insists that the new F-ducts are “not in the same magnitude” as those title-winning innovations. “It’s obviously helpful,” he admitted, “that’s why we’re doing it but it’s not a massive performance gain.” Nonetheless, the arms race has begun. “That’s going to cost a lot of money,” Sauber’s technical director Matt Morris told Auto Motor und Sport. |

Wealth has not dimmed Brawn’s driveComments Off Ross Brawn insists great wealth has not affected his drive to succeed. At the end of that campaign, Brawn sold the team to Mercedes, and the Financial Times claims the Briton – still team principal – collected dozens of millions of dollars. “I’m obviously a lot wealthier now than before and you wonder if you still have the same motivation to get up in the morning,” Brawn said. “But it did not alter my perspective or my passion and ambition to succeed in racing.” His job now is to win for Mercedes, and 2012 is year three, and the end of Michael Schumacher’s initial contract. “If it does not come off I will have to recognise there is something missing, something I am not able to do that perhaps someone else should have a go at,” revealed Brawn. |

Mercedes hiding new ‘double diffuser’ conceptComments Off The recently revealed ‘W-duct’ aside, another technical secret has been discovered aboard Mercedes’ newly launched W03. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reports that mechanics working for the Brackley based team are making more efforts than usual to hide the front and rear of the car, and erecting huge screens in front of the pits between test runs in Barcelona. But a big secret is now out of the bag, and it’s located beneath the rear rain light and being described by insiders as “like a double diffuser”. Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport said the feature is believed to produce an effect similar to the one pioneered by Mercedes’ predecessor Brawn GP in 2009, which resulted in the championship for Jenson Button. And according to Auto Motor und Sport, the concept differs to the banned double diffuser because the air is channelled through holes at the rear of the engine cover. The concept, despite complying with the FIA’s blown diffuser clampdown, also reportedly involves the clever redirection of exhaust gases. And yet another innovation on the Mercedes could be a passive ‘F-duct’-style addition to the car’s new rear wing, working alongside the ‘DRS’ system. When asked about the ‘ducts’, Rosberg and Schumacher played it coy: “What’s that?” Rosberg answered, while Schumacher joked that it sounds like something that should go “quack!” “They are a good team,” Red Bull team boss Christian Horner told Sky when asked about Mercedes. “They have some good people so it would be foolish to underestimate them.” Meanwhile, TZ newspaper in Germany reports that the FIA could be set to clamp down even harder in the area of exhaust blowing. There are rumours Renault and Mercedes-powered teams are still using clever engine mapping techniques for aerodynamic effect. |

Red Bull: Mercedes late to ‘hide something special’Comments Off Five days before the W03 is publicly revealed, Mercedes remains highly secretive about its 2012 car. Michael Schumacher will do the first laps in the silver car next Tuesday, as the first of eight days of Barcelona testing kicks off ahead of next month’s season opener in Australia. Mercedes leaked out some ‘teaser’ images of the W03 this week, but all carefully masking the detail of the single seater, including the ‘step’ nose solution. “I assume that they want to hide something from the competition,” surmised Red Bull designer Adrian Newey, according to Germany’s Sport Bild. “It must be something that can be copied quite quickly, otherwise they wouldn’t try so hard to keep it secret.” Agreed Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko: “They seem to have something special at the front of the car.” Ferrari is reportedly likening the situation to when the team – then called Brawn GP – arrived late with the famous ‘double diffuser’ and duly went on to win the title. The Corriere dello Sport website cited a Ferrari official in recalling Brawn was “like Cinderella” in sweeping in at the last moment and keeping her trick secret. “It’s a calculated risk,” team boss Ross Brawn, quoted in Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport, insisted when contemplating the 2012 car’s late reveal. |

Schumacher to have new race engineer in 2011Comments Off Michael Schumacher will have a new race engineer at Mercedes next year, according to reports. The French-language Eurosport said the identity of the engineer is Mark Slade, who this year is working alongside Vitaly Petrov at Renault. Slade moved to Renault this year from McLaren, where he worked with famous Finns Heikki Kovalainen, Kimi Raikkonen and Mika Hakkinen. After 15 years with the British team, he left McLaren early this season due to a technical staffing reshuffle. Schumacher’s engineer in 2010 is Andy Shovlin, who in 2009 worked at the Brackley based team – then Brawn GP – alongside world champion Jenson Button. It is expected that Shovlin will have a more general engineering role next year. Schumacher’s teammate Nico Rosberg will also have a new race engineer in 2011, having worked this year with Jock Clear. It is expected that Tony Ross, Rosberg’s former race engineer at Williams, is switching to Mercedes. Meanwhile, French commentator Jean-Louis Moncet wrote in his latest Auto Plus column that Mercedes GP chiefs Ross Brawn and Norbert Haug will have more distinct roles in 2011. Moncet said he believes team boss Brawn’s role will be partially factory-based. |

2011 Mercedes car ‘more innovative’ than W01Comments Off The design of Mercedes’ 2011 car is already in the wind tunnel and “more innovative” that its disappointing predecessor. That is the claim of the German marque’s Norbert Haug, one day after team boss Ross Brawn admitted the W01 was designed too conservatively amid Brawn GP’s 2009 title challenge. “The prototype of the new car is in the wind tunnel,” Haug told Bild am Sonntag newspaper. “It will be more innovative, the result of taking more risks. “The development of the current car is finished, so our engineers have more time to perhaps pursue some ideas that initially might seen outlandish. “At the same time, our competitors are designing their new cars for 2011 whilst still fighting hard for this world championship,” added Haug. In the same interview, the German also scotched reports he is at loggerheads with Brawn. Working in the same office as his British colleague in the team’s offices at Yeongam, Haug insisted: “Does it look as though we cannot work with one another?” However, much more pressing is the speculation that – at the end of another disappointing season next year – the team’s parent Daimler might pull the plug. “Absolutely not,” Haug insists. “We certainly do not intend to be in the midfield, but no one at Mercedes is talking about quitting.” |

Brawn admits days numbered if 2011 car also badComments Off Ross Brawn has admitted his days as Mercedes team boss are numbered if he cannot power the German marque’s name to the top of formula one. With the Brackley based team failing to live up to its billing as the reigning world champions with Michael Schumacher in the starring role, there have been widespread rumours about team harmony falling apart. Brawn insists Schumacher is staying put and denies he is at odds with the German manager Norbert Haug, but acknowledges that he needs to deliver a much better silver car for 2011. “Fourth position in the championship – and forget 2008 because that was the year I came to Honda and I couldn’t do anything about that – is probably the worst result I have had since I have been in senior management,” he told the Telegraph. “And if the team continues running at a mediocre level then I probably won’t be running a team for much longer. But the important thing is that I believe I know where we have gone wrong,” added Brawn. He has explained this year’s problems as due to fighting in 2009 for the team’s survival as Brawn GP last year, whilst also pushing Jenson Button to the title. “This business is all about spinning plates on the end of sticks. And if you stop spinning them they fall off. A few of our plates fell off last year. Now we have put them back and we are spinning them,” he said. Team figures are not hiding the fact that a major restructuring is about to take place, with one example being the rumoured drafting-in of Nico Rosberg’s former Williams engineer Tony Ross. “My lips are sealed,” the German driver, who is currently engineered by Jock Clear, is quoted by Turun Sanomat newspaper. “Anyway, we are moving in the right direction and nobody is being kicked out,” Rosberg insisted. |

Rosberg ‘angry’ about Mercedes’ ‘backwards’ progressComments Off Nico Rosberg has described the W01 as a “disaster”, as Mercedes moves closer to abandoning development of its 2010 car. The 25-year-old German again outqualified his famous teammate Michael Schumacher at Valencia, but his prize was a mere twelfth on the grid. He then scored no points in the race, despite the Brackley based team – winners of the 2009 world championship as Brawn GP – using a raft of improvements in Spain, including a Red Bull-like blown rear exhaust layout. Rosberg was angry immediately after the race, and a week later has told the Cologne publication Express: “It’s a disaster. “The problem with the tyres is well known to the team. For weeks we have said we are coming to the front, but nothing happens — actually we go backwards.” Rosberg admits he is “angry” with the situation. “If you’re twelfth, behind both Williams – who two weeks ago were nowhere – what do you expect? I went from Williams to Mercedes because I thought I would have a winning car.” Boss Ross Brawn said the team will continue to work on the W01, but admitted the time will come for a new approach. “We have not done a good enough job,” admitted the Briton. “First we need to get our new aero package working properly, and depending on the result we will decide to what extent we then concentrate on next season,” added Brawn. |

Brawn denies Kubica talks, Schu commits through 2012Comments Off Michael Schumacher has rejected rumours he might make room at Mercedes next year for Robert Kubica. It is has been suggested that team figures want Pole Kubica, 25, to race alongside Nico Rosberg in 2011, despite Schumacher having a three year contract. But although Schumacher slumped to just 15th on the Valencia grid, he said on Saturday he can “handle the pain” of his current situation. “I’m not here with a short-term view, that I just look from race to race and I have to have a single result. “From my point of view we have a three year programme.” Asked if the criticism hurt, or made him more determined to return to the top, the 41-year-old told reporters: “Neither nor. “I know what’s going on and I care about what is real and what I know and have to worry about. “Once we can solve our problems then there is reason to believe we can do much better, and even win races this year,” he added. Team boss Ross Brawn said at the Spanish street circuit that Mercedes has “not spoken” to Kubica. “I spoke to him at Brawn GP a year ago when we were looking at the future, but we haven’t spoken to him since then. “There’s no discussions going on, we’re very happy with Michael, we’ve got to sort the car out, that’s the main issue,” he insisted. Interestingly, Brawn did admit that he has “socialised occasionally” with Kubica on the seaside coast of Tuscany, where they each have a house. (GMM) |

Brawn happier without name above team garageComments Off Ross Brawn has revealed that he is “happier” now than when he was solely in charge of a team bearing his own name. In the wake of Honda’s shock exit at the end of 2008, the Briton and a group of team management took over and won last year’s title. But for 2010, Brawn GP was bought out to become Mercedes’s new works team, with the 55-year-old staying on board as team principal. Brawn’s passion and focus has always been on the engineering side, and he told the Financial Times this week: “To perform in the best possible way, I’m happier not being the majority shareholder.” He said he only ever owned the team “by default”, and while able to run the highly-competitive chassis designed with Honda’s huge resources, was financed only by the Japanese marque’s parting EUR2 million gift. Brawn explained that F1 teams usually work “to a budget that is guaranteed two to three years ahead. “But here I was in a situation where there was no budget. You had to do as well as you could and make the company as viable as possible while spending the minimum amount of money doing it.” (GMM) |

Mercedes ‘could be in front’ in Spain – HornerComments Off May 4 (GMM) Christian Horner does not agree that immediately aiming for race wins is an unrealistic target for Mercedes. The grey W01 car is set to feature major revisions in Spain this weekend, but the team’s pacesetter Nico Rosberg has denied that it means victory is now within Mercedes’ grasp. But also amid some reports that are writing off Michael Schumacher’s chances of making a big step in Barcelona, Red Bull’s Horner said: “They (Schumacher and Mercedes) have already shown what they can do.” The Briton is referring to Schumacher’s record tally of 91 wins and seven titles, and the fact that as Brawn GP, the Brackley based team won both the drivers’ and the constructors’ championships last year. Red Bull’s RB6 until now has been the fastest on the 2010 grid, but Horner said “writing off teams and drivers that have won world championships” is a “mistake you must never make”. “Things can change very quickly,” he said in the latest edition of the German sports magazine Kicker. “That’s why Mercedes could suddenly be in front in Barcelona,” added Horner. |

Button and Brawn GP nominated to the Laureus AwardsComments Off Jenson Button and the Brawn team (currently, Mercedes GP) have been nominated to the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards. Button, who prior to 2009 has only won a Grand Prix, is nominated for the 2010 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award after winning last season’s pilot championship. The other nominees in this category are: Mark Cavendish (cycling) and Tom Daley (diving), as well as Juan Martín del Potro (tennis), Ji Yai Shin (golfer), and the relatively small German football team, LVI Wolfsburg. Lewis Hamilton got last year’s award after winning the 2009 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Mika Hakkinen, Laureus World Sports Academy Member and double Formula One World Champion will announce the nominees The winners –who will be selected by a jury of 46 people-, will have to attend the ceremony that will be held next month in Abu Dhabi. |

Mercedes W01 AnalysisComments Off In its striking silver and black, the new nose of the single-seater does remind us of Brawn’s BGP01, but if we look closely it’s very different. The middle part of the nose is much higher, reaching above the front wing, together with the typical V shape of the Red Bull RB5 V. The car has its nose edge higher at both sides right up to the cockpit opening. (look at the detailed picture below.) The underside of the nose is rounded off, also as the RB5, but with less height in the front suspension mounts which are joined to the chassis by a small keel. Around the driver, the sidepod entries have changed less, maintaining the air inlets that are now bulky in comparison to what McLaren and Ferrari have presented in 2010. The wing mirrors have been kept very simple.
Front detail of the Mercedes W01 This racing car may be one of the most innovative, not having anything to do with the adjustments made for his official presentation in Germany. The airbox, apart from being an air inlet, its main objective is to be a roll hoop for the pilot in case of a crash. Due to this, the teams usually reinforce the airbox walls with carbon fiber so that it matches the required strength. Up to here there’s nothing we don’t know, but Mercedes has gone a little farther applying a completely different concept. W01 Airbox Here, the team has chosen to build the roll hoop as a vertical column providing a thick support on the centerline of the car. So an air inlet must also be provided. If you watch closely, the airbox is divided in two, with an air opening much larger than we are used to. A little more to the back, there is a small opening on each side of the airbox, providing cooling air for some components that sit more rearward in the car. It is understood that Mercedes and several other teams have chosen to move some components to sit in the low rear to make place for the larger fuel tank. Despite the fairly bulky shape of the sidepods with a remarkable lack of undercut, the rear end of the car is extremely mince, leaving most of the suspension components open to free airflow. The team have made the bodywork so narrow that many of the components protrude. Specifications

BMW Sauber C29 AnalysisComments Off Although BMW decided to interrupt the development of its single-seater in the middle of the season, the C29 is the result of the permanent evolution of the BMW Sauber F1.09. In its first test in Valencia in February 1st, one could see its front aileron clearly influenced by the 2009 Brawn GP design. The nose’s cone drops a little further down, after an update similar to the one already carried out last year. The top part of the nose is now almost flat, from the pilot’s cockpit to the tip of the racing car. The front aileron is carefully sculpted to improve the nose’s air flow condition. The front suspension has been modified and has an independent steering arm to help the front aileron work more efficiently. Also, following Brawn’s example, the sides have smaller air inlets and big pontoons, the mirrors mounted over them. We have seen that the rear part has a more pronounced drop to provide with better air flow towards the rear aileron. As a result, most of the rear suspension arms are open for air flow. Once again, the racing car’s sculpture has been optimized to improve the new double diffuser. SpecificationsChassis: Carbon-fiber monocoque. The different aerodynamic solutions of 2010Comments Off Subsequent to the first two testing days where the single-seaters were seen, there are aerodynamic solutions for all tastes. During these days, it has been surprising how the engineers have hurried to cover the diffusers when the single-seaters enter the boxes. Funny, because some moments later they’re back in the racetrack and it would be difficult to run after the car to cover the diffuser, wouldn’t it? Leaving the “funny” note aside, let’s take a look at how the aerodynamics of the seven scuderias that have been presented in these official tests at the Valencian circuit have evolved. I must say that it’s not an analysis of the aerodynamics, but of some visible changes. FERRARI The engineers of the Italian ‘scuderia’ chose to change the nose and wing in a significant way. The nose seems to be lower than last year’s increasing its descending curve, with a softened V form (below, in the photo gallery you can enlarge the picture to see in more detail.) For 2010, Ferrari has initially chosen to include a sharp fin, similar to the one that became fashionable with Red Bull, last year. MERCEDES No doubt, one of the cars with more changes, if we take the Brawn GP as reference. The nose is even lower than Ferrari’s, with less tip and more rounded. Very similar to last year’s well-known Red Bull design. Contrary to the rest of the scuderias, they have selected a short tail behind the air inlet over the pilot (engine’s lid). RENAULT Renault does not contribute with any extraordinary changes in its front, following its aerodynamic philosophy of a robust appearance, “rough” nose. It has a descending angle, but lacks the famous V shape that can be seen in other single-seaters. Just as it finished last season, Renault uses a great sharp fin as engine lid. MCLAREN The MP-4 follows an evolution from its previous model, without the V shape used by Ferrari or Mercedes. Its nose is rounded and seems higher than others,’ even though, the front double wing is wider and have joined the “sharp fin” fashion. Peculiar interpretation of the sharp fin, since it almost finishes in the rear aileron. However, we’re still investigating the camera options on the single-seaters. Note that Ferrari, McLaren and Williams “have an integrated periscope.” WILLIAMS
Aside from the periscope, its possible the single-seater with less changes of all that we have seen (a priori). The characteristics that stand out the most are a very flat and high nose, together with a front double aileron. Hopefully, tomorrow we’ll go to another place where we can see the rear of the car, because we’ve heard that’s the part of the single-seater with more changes. BMW SAUBER As you can appreciate in this photograph, aerodynamically it seems like a completely new single-seater. A nose with little drop, and a long but mostly high “sharp fin.” When I say ‘high’, I mean that it does not fall as other scuderias’, but it’s rather a great extension of the air intake. TORO ROSSO The new Toro Rosso’s nose follows the trend of its previous model with only some slight touches. However, the rear section is the one that has had the most evolution in 2010. The sharp fin is an innovation joining with the rear aileron of the racing car. The idea is to transfer the most quantity of air possible to the rear aileron. Is that a solution to get extra grip? Awaiting to see “the revolutionary USF1″ that according to the North Americans breaks with anything ever seen, this year the scuderias have changed a great deal the exterior of the racing cars.
