Haug denies Mercedes quitting F1(0) Norbert Haug has denied reports Mercedes is on the verge of quitting F1. London newspaper The Times’ F1 correspondent Kevin Eason reported that the German carmaker has conducted a study into how the withdrawal could be effected. He said the reason for Mercedes pulling out would be because, unlike Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull, the Stuttgart marque has not been offered a place on F1′s post-floatation board. When asked about Eason’s report, Mercedes’ competition vice-president Haug insisted to Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport: “There is absolutely no truth to that.” The report said negotiations between Mercedes and F1 bosses over the next Concorde Agreement are ongoing. First as an engine supplier only, Mercedes has been in F1 in the modern era since 1993. |

Bahrain could get director on F1 board(0) Bahrain, the controversial island Kingdom, could have been central to McLaren’s decision to agree the terms of the next Concorde Agreement. Bahrain’s ruling family, through its investment arm Mumtalakat Holdings, owns half of the famous British team. The Times’ F1 correspondent Kevin Eason quoted a source as saying the link “pushed (McLaren’s) Concorde deal over the line”. In return for signing up, Bahrain reportedly received a “pledge” that last month’s highly contentious grand prix would go ahead. Eason also said it is possible that one of McLaren’s two Bahraini directors, rather than the obvious choice Ron Dennis, could be appointed to the F1 board once the sport is floated on the Singapore exchange. Bernie Ecclestone denied the 2012 Bahrain grand prix and the Concorde Agreement deal were linked. “It was nothing to do with the Bahrain race (going ahead),” the F1 chief executive insisted. “But McLaren liked the deal.” Intriguingly, however, F1′s post-stock market floatation chairman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe has defended the controversial decision to push ahead with Bahrain last month. “The race was exploited by the opposition in Bahrain, not vice versa,” he told the Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung. “That was not interpreted correctly by the media. “If groups want to exploit sporting events for their interests, then the worst thing you can do is give way.” Brabeck also compared Bahrain to England. “In what countries are there no riots?” he asked rhetorically. “A year ago there were riots in London — should the Olympic Games now be cancelled?” |

New boss says F1 must consider future after Ecclestone(0) Food giant Nestle’s boss has confirmed he is set to enter the world of formula one. Austrian businessman Peter Brabeck-Letmathe confirmed to Kleine Zeitung newspaper that he has been lined up to chair the sport’s parent company once it has floated on the Singapore exchange. “That’s right,” said the 67-year-old. “And it’s true that I have agreed to take over the chairmanship of the supervisory board in a non-executive function. “If formula one is to be a public company then it is important that the chairman is independent.” Brabeck-Letmathe confirmed that Bernie Ecclestone, 82, is remaining F1′s chief executive. “We certainly hope that Bernie stays healthy for a long time and can keep on working,” he said. “I am already impressed with his performance. But of course it is the task of a supervisory board to ensure the succession of a business. “At Nestle, I have always ensured that everyone can be replaced from the executive board within 24 hours. So we need to think about how to replace Bernie Ecclestone as well.” |

Ferrari getting ready for ‘double-DRS’(0) Ferrari might be gearing up to incorporate a ‘double-DRS’ setup aboard its improving F2012 car. If true, the famous Italian team would be the first team to successfully emulate the controversial Mercedes system, which has been declared fully legal by the governing FIA. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport said a new rear wing was among the very last upgrades to be trialled by Fernando Alonso as the Mugello test concluded late on Thursday. “The wing has only minor changes. You have to look closely,” read the report. The magazine reported rumours that the wing might eventually accommodate the so-called ‘double-DRS’ or 2012-style F-duct, which would work in conjunction with a new and so far unseen front wing. “That (wing) will debut along with a new diffuser and nose in Barcelona,” added Auto Motor und Sport. There were happy faces in the Ferrari garage on Thursday, as – despite a minor off by Alonso – the upgrades appeared to work well. “Barcelona will be a key moment in the season, but not a decisive one,” the Spanish driver insisted. “It’s not a case that we will suddenly find ourselves back on pole position, because there is no magic button.” Echoing the earlier words of Mark Webber, Alonso said the “fastest car” at Mugello this week was the Lotus. Red Bull’s Dr Helmut Marko agrees: “It looks like Lotus are the quickest.” Veteran Swiss correspondent Roger Benoit wrote in Blick newspaper: “Lotus, with Kimi Raikkonen in super shape, is the championship dark horse.” |

Grosjean admits he ‘didn’t race’ Raikkonen(0) Romain Grosjean has admitted he didn’t try to keep his teammate Kimi Raikkonen behind him at the recent Bahrain grand prix. In the wake of Lotus’ podium breakthrough, it was suggested Frenchman Grosjean was the victim of team orders. Team figures, including boss Eric Boullier and 2007 world champion Raikkonen who finished the race second ahead of rookie Grosjean, denied the charge, even though team orders are fully legal. But it emerged this week that, just before Grosjean was passed by Raikkonen, the French driver was told on the radio: “Kimi is faster than you. “Do not hold him up,” the radio message, broadcasted for the first time by F1′s official website this week, ended. Onboard footage of the move also showed Raikkonen briefly waving to his teammate as he completed the easy pass, ostensibly to thank him. “I think that if I had closed the door on Kimi, or if we had fought, then I could have lost a wing,” Grosjean said this week. “We knew that we could have a podium as a result and I didn’t want to make a mistake. I didn’t race at my best level,” he admitted to RMC. |

Singapore eyes new race deal and F1 floatation(0) The fact F1 has chosen the Singapore exchange for the sport’s high profile floatation does not mean the city-state’s popular floodlit street race is guaranteed. The night event’s existing five year contract runs out this year, although a two-year notice clause in the deal means Singapore should stay on the calendar at least until 2014. On the face of it, a new deal seemed a certainty, given it was Bernie Ecclestone himself who chose Singapore as the location for F1′s forthcoming floatation. “Formula one is known in Singapore, and Asia is thriving. It is a simpler market and not as restrictive,” he said recently. Talks about a new race deal “are underway”, the local Business Times reported in March, “but it is understood that one sticking point is the sanction fee.” An unnamed banker commented: “The Singapore government wants formula one to be listed here and for that to happen, it knows the race has to remain here. “But at the same time, it doesn’t want to pay top dollar again. So the bargaining should continue for some time.” However, the English language newspaper now reports that F1′s floatation plans, and the expiring Singapore race contract, could be entirely unrelated. “We are in the process of negotiating a possible renewal of the (race) agreement and the outcome will be announced once discussions are complete,” said a spokesman for race promoter Singapore GP. Second minister for trade and industry S Iswaran insisted that the mooted floatation will not influence the outcome of the race contract negotiations. And the Singapore tourism board’s Aw Kah Peng added: “You’ve got to see whether the deal is right in every way. “We’re hoping everybody sees value in it and we get a so-called good deal for Singapore, in terms of whether all the numbers can work out and everybody takes home something — a kind of a win-win proposition.” |

Sauber confirms Chelsea sponsor rumour(0) Rumours that a top English premier league football club is entering formula one as a sponsor have proved correct. Ever since Sauber has been running teaser ‘Out of the blue’ and ‘True blue’ graphics on its engine cover livery in China and Bahrain, speculation about the identity of the forthcoming sponsor have been swirling in the F1 paddock. We reported the rumour that the deal could be with the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, to promote his football club Chelsea. Swiss F1 team Sauber confirmed the “new and innovative partnership” on Monday. “The C31 sporting the blue logo of Chelsea FC will be seen for the first time at the Spanish grand prix,” the Hinwil based team announced in a media statement. “A partnership like this between formula one and football has never existed before in this form, yet there are numerous commonalities and possible synergies,” said Sauber chief executive Monisha Kaltenborn. The statement said Chelsea will in turn display Sauber’s logo on its advertising boards and interview walls, ensuring one another “a significant market presence outside their original sport”. |

Lauda: Winning ‘easier now’ for RosbergComments Off More wins could quickly follow for F1′s newest race victor, Nico Rosberg. The Mercedes driver began the 2012 season with more than a century of races under his belt, causing some pundits to predict he will never taste winning champagne. But he broke through in China just a day after his maiden pole. “I took 113 (races to win) and he’s on 111,” 2009 world champion Jenson Button smiled in Shanghai. Niki Lauda thinks Rosberg’s next wins will be easier. “It (winning) gets easier,” the Austrian legend said in China late on Sunday, “because he know you can do it, and you’ve proved it. “The next victories come quite quickly,” Lauda told the German broadcaster RTL. Patrick Tambay won just two grands prix in consecutive seasons, 1982 and 1983, but he said the first one – achieved in Keke Rosberg’s championship year – came with “a sense of completion”. “After that, things seem easier,” said the Frenchman, “especially so when you’ve waited 110 grands prix! “It will feel like a relief,” Tambay told RMC Sport. “Now, he’s still young at 26 but with a lot of experience; he has everything he needs to reproduce this victory. “The first is the most difficult.” However, Tambay thinks Rosberg has a fight on his hands if he thinks the Shanghai victory is a springboard to a potential championship challenge. “I see the McLaren as the best car of the season. They passed up a good opportunity for the (China GP) win,” he said. |

Vijay’s Vision After two races the 2012 season appears to have all the ingredients needed to serve up a spectacular year of racing. Already the fans have enjoyed two thrilling races and the intensity of the competition across the grid is sure to capture everybody’s attention. I said last year that the competition in the midfield was close, but this year it seems to be even more so with the majority of the grid capable of fighting for points. It’s a good situation for Formula One, but it also means points are harder to come by. It’s encouraging that we have scored points in both races and that will be our aim once again in China. I have to congratulate Paul and Nico on their excellent drives in Malaysia. They are only in their second full seasons of Formula One, but they both showed their maturity in the difficult conditions. At times Paul was one of the fastest cars on the circuit, excelling in the conditions, and it’s clear that we can expect another strong season from him. I was also delighted to see Nico pick up his first points with us after such a strong showing. In terms of car development, the factory at Silverstone continues to work at full capacity to improve our performance. The first two races have given us a great deal of information to work with and we will put it to good use in the coming races. HRT: Preview GP of ChinaComments Off It was mission accomplished for HRT Formula 1 Team in Malaysia a couple of weeks ago after both cars qualified and completed their first race of the season after a hard start. The F112 accumulated many kilometres and data on the track and the engineers had a lot of information to work on during the two week period between the race in Sepang and China. Having met the team’s targets last time out, HRT now aims to progress from where it left things in Malaysia and continue improving. The Shanghai International Circuit is made up of sixteen turns, with nine being right-handers and seven left-handers. Cars reach maximum speeds on the 1.2km straight between corners 13 and 14, where they try and take advantage of the length of the straight to overtake. In China, the team will have a new member on board, Ma Qing Hua, who will be joining the outfit for the first time as a member of the driver development programme at his local Grand Prix. Pirelli have elected their soft and medium tyres for this grand prix. Pedro de la Rosa, #22: “After these first two Grands Prix we arrive in China much better prepared, with more mileage and having learned a lot, especially after the Malaysian GP. All the data gathered in the last race is very important for us, as we mustn’t forget that we didn’t have a preseason. Now we have a better insight on the areas where we must improve, but the most important thing in this initial stage is to finish races. That is the prime objective in order to learn and improve race by race. The hardest part comes now but we are better prepared. China is a circuit where I have always done well and a place I know well, both in dry and wet conditions. It’s not a particularly hard track for the car or the driver, but aerodynamics are fundamental”. Narain Karthikeyan, #23: “We took a step forward in Malaysia and our aim is definitely to carry the momentum into China and rest of the season. Although we managed to finish the race, cooling was still an issue at Sepang and once we have it sorted out completely we’ll be able to unlock some more performance from the car. The back straight at the Shanghai circuit is of course one of the longest on the calendar and the tightening first corner is uniquely challenging since the corner entry is in top gear and by the time you exit you’re in second. Plus there are a fair amount of technical slow-speed corners as well, and the high-speed direction change of turns 7/8. Given these mixed characteristics, it is a demanding circuit for traction, aero and braking stability in equal measures”. Luis Pérez-Sala, Team Principal: “The start to the season was very complicated because we were behind schedule with regards to the other teams. We had to put in a colossal effort to be able to get on track in Australia and improve our performance just one week later in Malaysia. There’s still plenty to do and many areas to improve on to be where we should be but at least in these two weeks we’ve had a bit more time to analyse data, prepare and recharge batteries, therefore I’m confident that we’re arriving in China in a much better situation. We mustn’t forget that the F112 is only taking its first steps and, as of today, what we must do is progress without stopping. In Shanghai we’ll have some small updates to optimize cooling and aerodynamics, and the target for this weekend is to check that these adjustments work. To sum up, we have to get more out of the car but must also improve on teamwork and coordination”. |

FIA ‘not aware’ of penalty risk for obscene Vettel gestureComments Off F1′s governing body has played down claims Sebastian Vettel faces a penalty for his behaviour during the Malaysian grand prix. After the race, the reigning world champion dismissed HRT’s Narain Karthikeyan as an “idiot” following their on-track collision. On-board footage subsequently proved that Red Bull driver Vettel, 24, twice showed his Indian driver a ‘middle finger’ salute. Reports in Germany suggested the behaviour was a breach of the stricter code of conduct under FIA president Jean Todt, with the German theoretically facing anything from a warning to the revocation of his superlicense. “My understanding is these matters are dealt with by stewards at each grand prix,” an FIA spokesman told us. “I am not aware of any other action being contemplated.” Karthikeyan, who was penalised after the clash, told the Hindustan Times newspaper that the stewards favoured world champion Vettel’s explanation. “They (the stewards) didn’t care about what I had to say because Mr Vettel told them god knows what when he went and talked to them,” he said. But Red Bull team boss Christian Horner defended Vettel, telling the Mirror that it is “Karthikeyan’s responsibility to get out of the way for the leaders”. Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg, meanwhile, partly excused Vettel’s outbursts. “I think Vettel was just emotional at that point of time. At the end of the day, he is just human and sometimes you get emotional,” the German is quoted by the Times of India. Former driver Adrian Sutil goes even further. “I can understand him (Vettel),” he told Die Welt newspaper in Germany. “I was often angry when I was lapping people, when they make no room for you while they are fighting for places that have almost no significance. “Karthikeyan ended up influencing not only Vettel’s race, but also Jenson Button’s. They (backmarkers) have to understand that as well.” |

Marko: Vettel team order ‘not tactical’Comments Off Red Bull has hit back at claims the team lied about a technical problem in Malaysia in order to gain a tactical advantage for the forthcoming races. Near the end of the Sepang race, Sebastian Vettel’s engineer repeatedly instructed the back-to-back world champion to retire his RB8 car. Team boss Christian Horner said the brake temperatures had risen to a dangerous level, but Vettel nonetheless raced to the chequered flag and finished eleventh, one position out of the points. Horner explained Vettel did not hear the radio calls due to a “lightening strike”, but photos prove that the German driver was also repeatedly shown pit boards with the same messages. And the 24-year-old revealed after the race: “Of course you can save the car, but I wanted to see the chequered flag. I think that’s how it should be.” Moreover, the authoritative Auto Motor und Sport quotes Vettel as confirming: “I heard the command.” Red Bull has been accused in some media reports of feigning the brake problem in order to retire the car for tactical reasons and therefore install a fresh gearbox for China next month without penalty. Dr Helmut Marko told Bild newspaper: “After the crash (with Narain Karthikeyan), the temperature of the brakes rose far above the allowed level. “We called him in purely because the car was no longer safe. It was not a tactical decision,” the Austrian insisted. It is reported that Vettel will sit with his team bosses this week in Milton-Keynes to discuss the apparently ignored team order. German racing legend Hans-Joachim Stuck said: “Another driver would be fired, but Vettel has the confidence of being a double world champion.” According to Welt newspaper, Swiss commentator Marc Surer added: “It was the right decision by Vettel, as the team needs to be careful with commands like that.” |

Vettel risks penalty for ‘middle finger’ tiradeComments Off The FIA could sanction F1′s reigning back-to-back world champion for his behaviour during the recent Malaysian grand prix. Before calling backmarker Narain Karthikeyan a “gherkin” and “idiot” in the wake of their collision, Sebastian Vettel was captured by his on-board camera twice displaying his middle-finger to the Indian driver. “I think he’s highly frustrated because he’s having a tough season,” Karthikeyan told the Deccan Chronicle on Wednesday. “It’s completely unprofessional to blame me for the incident. The derogatory remark only goes to show him in bad light. “Just because he has a good car, he can’t call others an idiot,” Karthikeyan continued. “I have won races in all the previous single-seater championships I have participated in so I don’t need a certificate from Vettel.” Reports in Germany, including in the Kolner Express, Bild and Die Welt newspapers, claim that Red Bull driver’s behaviour may have breached the new stricter code of conduct introduced by FIA president Jean Todt. The FIA has been contacted for comment. “He has breached the code of conduct,” former F1 driver Marc Surer told Germany’s Sky television. “You sign it when you get the license and then you have to behave correspondingly. “Any behaviour that hurts other people or the sport is an offense,” added the Swiss. Asked what the penalties might be, Surer explained: “Anything from a warning to a license revocation. In this case I think it was quite understandable and there will be a mild punishment, if there is anything.” Hans-Joachim Stuck, however, is slightly less forgiving. “When you’re overtaking, misunderstandings can occur. I think Vettel needs to learn this. “With him, the curve was always upwards and now it’s not the case, and he needs to deal with that,” the German legend told the DAPD news agency. As for Vettel’s description of Karthikeyan as a “gherkin”, Stuck insisted: “It’s better than ‘asshole’.” Vettel’s attack, however, was sustained, with Kleine Zeitung newspaper now quoting the Red Bull driver as having said: “Maybe formula one is not the place to learn how to drive.” Stuck responded: “If Sebastian had left more space, it would not have happened. It happens sometimes so it’s a racing incident. “He (Karthikeyan) didn’t do it on purpose and it always takes two.” The HRT driver hit back by calling Vettel a “bully”, and even David Coulthard – a Red Bull team consultant – defended Karthikeyan. “He can’t make his car invisible,” the Scot is quoted as saying by the Mirror. Also defending Karthikeyan was Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg, who told the Indian press this week: “From what I saw, it was not Narain’s fault. “So I don’t really understand why he (Vettel) said all that.” Hukenberg’s Force India teammate Paul di Resta added: “Narain is entitled to do as much on the track in comparison with someone like Vettel. “Both are F1 drivers and are there to represent their teams.” |

Force India to push on with new F1 spy sagaComments Off Years after F1′s ‘spygate’ sagas, the issue could be set to return to the very top of the governing body’s agenda. Force India claims Caterham and their common former wind tunnel partner Aerolab were this week “found liable” by a British court of using Force India data for the Team Lotus car of early 2010. Vijay Mallya’s Silverstone based team said the ruling has been “referred for the consideration” of the FIA. But Aerolab has hit back, insisting the judge “entirely rejected” Force India’s charge of “systematic copying”. “On the contrary, such misuse as I have found to have occurred mainly consisted of opportunistic copying of CAD files by CAD designers in order to take a short cut,” the wind tunnel company quoted judge Justice Arnold as saying. Nonetheless, Caterham was ordered to pay EUR 25,000 to Force India, but not the 18 million requested by the team. “We were deeply disappointed with the damages award,” Force India deputy team principal Robert Fernley told the Guardian. He said Caterham/Aerolab did not make a simple “short cut” in copying the CAD files, but copied “front and rear break duct systems, the front wing, the rear wing, the barge boards, the vortex generators and the diffuser”. “The judge might say it’s not systematic but in my view it’s pretty extensive,” added Fernley. Force India is expected to appeal. And if the FIA intervenes and charges Caterham with theft, “it would cost Caterham tens of millions for the money they received for finishing tenth in the world championship for the past two years”, wrote Guardian correspondent Paul Weaver. “And that is before any fine.” |

Paddock abuzz with Concorde intrigueComments Off As ever in the high-intrigue world of formula one politics, what is not said always has more value that what is freedly revealed. Firstly, while some interpreted Saturday’s news as a 2013 Concorde Agreement being done and dusted, the F1 chief executive’s short statement in fact merely said “the terms” of the next contract have been agreed. And the major keyword was that “the majority” of the teams – including Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull – are on board. “Bernie’s used the word majority,” McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh is quoted by the Mirror. “If there are 12 teams, that’s seven or more. “I don’t know any more.” The big missing domino is Mercedes, who according to multiple media sources are holding out for now. Another is the famous British outfit Williams. “All agreements between FOM and the teams are normally subject to confidentiality clauses,” Red Bull’s Christian Horner is quoted in German reports. “So I can’t comment.” Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reported that, in addition to the aforementioned top teams, also set to sign up for 2013 are Red Bull sister team Toro Rosso and Ferrari-powered Sauber. Lotus and Force India are reportedly also part of that group. That leaves just the three slowest teams Caterham, Marussia and HRT as the other teams remaining in the cold. |
