Senna hopes strong result silences critics Senna hopes strong result silences criticsComments Off

Bruno Senna has admitted he feels a release of pressure following a strong showing in Malaysia last weekend.

The Brazilian, whose uncle was the great triple world champion Ayrton Senna, has had a tough time establishing his credentials to date with part-time seats at the HRT and Renault (now Lotus) teams.

Although out-qualified for the second consecutive grand prix by his Williams teammate Pastor Maldonado in Malaysia, Senna went on to score 8 points in the race — more than the famous British team’s entire tally of last year.

“Having a good result takes some of the weight off your shoulders,” he admitted, according to the Sun newspaper.

“There will always be critics and you are never going to please everybody. But for sure, having a strong result will take some wind out of the critics’ sails.

“Hopefully I can make sure I keep having strong results to show I deserve my place here,” the 28-year-old added.

Martin Brundle, the former grand prix veteran who is now a highly respected British commentator and analyst, has revealed he is one such sceptic who has been won over.

“For the first time, I believe Bruno Senna can cut it in formula one,” he said.

“I hadn’t seen anything before that convinced me in the same way this (result in Malaysia) did.”

HRT was ‘risky team’ for Senna HRT was ‘risky team’ for SennaComments Off

HRT was a “risky team” for Bruno Senna to drive for in 2010, the Brazilian’s mother Viviane has admitted.
Senna, whose mother is the great Ayrton Senna’s sister, went on to race for Renault (now Lotus) last year and for 2012 has switched to Williams.

“What matters is that the team can give Bruno the best conditions to develop his ability,” Viviane Senna told TV Globo.

“I was not happy with Hispania. They had no spare parts, so if something was broken it would be patched up for the next race. You never knew when the next thing was going to break.

“Yes, that was a risky team,” she admitted.

Many observers see 2012 as 28-year-old Senna’s last chance to prove he is even a shadow of his late, great uncle.

Viviane insisted: “People remember Ayrton the winner, the champion, but few remember how long he took to get there.

“Bruno went from nothing to F1 in five years. It’s an unfair comparison to those who have done it (racing) for their whole lives.”

Prost will not see ‘Senna’ movie Prost will not see ‘Senna’ movieComments Off

Alain Prost has revealed he has no desire to see the highly-lauded feature film about his former nemesis Ayrton Senna.
The award-winning ‘Senna’ movie focuses strongly on legendary Senna’s on and off-track rivalry with Frenchman Prost, who was portrayed as the politicking villain.

“I haven’t seen it and I don’t want to see it,” the 57-year-old told the Russian website F1News.

“I definitely don’t agree with how they went about it,” Prost explained. “I spent a lot of time trying to explain to the makers that they are wrong.”

The Frenchman was also asked about the late Ayrton’s nephew Bruno, who in 2012 will race for Williams-Renault, a combination that in 1993 powered Prost to the last of his four titles.

“Bruno is a great guy and I mean that sincerely,” he said.

“I cannot judge his ability as a driver, because it’s premature to talk about that, but he is a good person.”

Vettel eyes pole record but says Senna was best Vettel eyes pole record but says Senna was bestComments Off

Sebastian Vettel is likely to break an almost twenty year old formula one record this year.
In 1992, Williams’ Nigel Mansell started from the front of the grid no fewer than 14 times, and Vettel has already won 10 poles in 2011 with six races left to run.

The 24-year-old German, however, admitted that even if he does capture Mansell’s record, he would not consider himself the best qualifier in F1 history.

“I think it (the record would be) nice to hear but I think the most impressive one – and it will probably always be – is Ayrton Senna.

“The amount of poles he got during a year and then for three or four years in a row, I think that’s the real benchmark,” said Vettel.

In addition to the pole record, Vettel could also become F1′s highest ever scorer of points, according to an analysis by Brazil’s Globo Esporte.

So far in 2011, Vettel has won just over 87 per cent of all the points available to him, with the all-time record for an entire season being Michael Schumacher’s 84.71 in 2002.

Massa: “This year’s results have not matched my expectations” Massa: “This year’s results have not matched my expectations”Comments Off

Today’s FIA press conference at the Interlagos circuit was an all-Brazilian affair, with the two “new boys,” Lucas di Grassi and Bruno Senna, joined by their senior colleagues, Rubens Barrichello and Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro’s Felipe Massa. Indeed, it was an all Paulista affair as the four are from the city of Sao Paolo.

Asked to look back at this season, Felipe singled out his qualifying performance as the worst feature of 2010. “This year’s results have not matched my expectations, especially in qualifying where I struggled to put together a good first lap on fresh tyres,” he said. “It’s true there have also been some races where I failed to finish in the points and then there was Singapore, where a qualifying problem meant I had to start from the back.”

As to this weekend’s home race, Felipe shared his fellow panelists’ enthusiasm for the Interlagos circuit. “I have great memories from here with two wins and poles in 2006, ’07 and ’08, which was the last time I raced here. Then going even further back, at the start of my career, I won here twice in Formula Chevrolet. This track has many interesting challenges and you can be creative with the set-up, while many sections of the track require a very technical approach. It might be a short lap, not like most of the new tracks, but this circuit is very well thought out and there is always overtaking here and some nice fights. But it is really the Brazilian people who make Interlagos special – they are so hot with emotion and they sing all day long in the grandstands, which is great for us Brazilian drivers, giving us some extra power.”

Mathematically, Fernando Alonso has a chance of winning the Drivers’ title on Sunday and Felipe was asked if he felt it might happen. “Well, Fernando is leading right now, so for sure I think he can do it here, but as we have seen this season, everything is possible. My personal aim is to try and win the race and of course I can help Fernando by taking points away from his rivals.”

This week sees the premiere of a film made about the life of Ayrton Senna and all four drivers were asked for their memories of the great Brazilian champion, who died during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. “Ayrton was really amazing and I remember so many of his races,” said Felipe. “But what really stands out in my mind was his ability in qualifying, not only taking pole in so many races, but often doing so with a big gap over the rest. For me, that was his strongest point.”

HRT’s Senna reveals talks with ‘other teams’ HRT’s Senna reveals talks with ‘other teams’Comments Off

Bruno Senna has admitted it would be “great” to return to Interlagos in the future with a chance of a good result.

The Brazilian rookie, whose uncle Ayrton was revered by the local Interlagos crowd and is buried in nearby Morumbi, will contest his first grand prix at the circuit this weekend in the uncompetitive HRT car.

Recent reports have indicated the 27-year-old is in talks with other teams about 2011, perhaps Lotus where he could be test driver next year before returning to the grid in 2012.

“It would be great to fight for better positions,” he said in a Portuguese language Reuters news report.

Senna’s debut F1 season has been difficult, but he said he is focused on the positive aspects.

“I have learned a lot, I have gained experience in many ways, and I have the opportunity to fight for a place for next year.

“So it’s been a year of learning and growing and it’s giving me the chance to be in formula one next year,” he added.

Senna confirmed there are talks ongoing with other teams about 2011.

“We are talking with other teams and we are opening some doors that were maybe not open before … the prospects are good,” he added.

Senna in talks for Lotus-Renault switch Senna in talks for Lotus-Renault switchComments Off

Bruno Senna, the nephew of the great Ayrton Senna, is in talks to switch for 2011 from struggling HRT to F1′s best new team Lotus.

That is the claim of Brazil’s Globo Esporte, noting that the move would reinvoke the fabled Lotus/Renault/Senna combination of the 1980s.

Rookie Senna, who turned 27 earlier this month, has had a difficult debut season in 2010 at the wheel of the slowest and least developed car on the grid fielded by the Spanish newcomer Hispania.

“Bruno Senna is close to getting something better,” said the Portuguese language report.

“He is in talks with Lotus and these talks are already well advanced,” Globo added, nominating Jarno Trulli as the driver most likely to leave the Malaysian team in the event that Senna is signed.

The report cited sources “close to the driver” as insisting that Senna cannot finalise the deal until his sponsors agree, adding that these talks with “several companies” are also already taking place.

Globo Esporte also said Lotus’ announcement of its Renault engine deal for 2011 will be made next weekend at Interlagos.

Late triple world champion Ayrton Senna won his first grand prix at the wheel of a Renault-powered Lotus in 1985.

He won a further 5 grands prix in a Lotus-Renault, as well as 24 podiums, 16 pole positions and 150 points before moving to McLaren.

Berger: Alonso in same league as Senna, Schumacher Berger: Alonso in same league as Senna, SchumacherComments Off

Fernando Alonso is in the same league as two of F1′s greatest recent champions, according to Gerhard Berger.

“There are sometimes those special drivers: Ayrton Senna was one, Michael Schumacher was one, and Alonso is one,” said the Austrian and former grand prix winner.

Berger is uniquely placed to compare Ferrari’s Spanish driver with those greats — he was one of Senna’s closest friends, having raced alongside the late Brazilian at McLaren in the 90s.

And he was a contemporary of Schumacher’s during the seven time world champion’s first F1 career, moving away from Ferrari to make room for the German, and then replacing him for the 1996 season at Benetton.

“They are drivers who can win world championships without having the absolute best car,” Berger told Austrian television Servus TV.

Today’s F1 chargers recreate 1986 title finale photo Today’s F1 chargers recreate 1986 title finale photoComments Off

F1 indulged in a piece of rare nostalgia on Thursday by recreating a famous scene.

As the 1986 world championship fight came to a head in Adelaide, the four title protagonists – Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet – posed on the pitwall with Bernie Ecclestone for a media photograph.

Two and a half decades later, there are still five drivers in the running for the 2010 crown, so the ever-present F1 chief executive was back on the pitwall for the same sort of photograph.

This time, the scene of the photo – featuring Ecclestone and drivers Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber, Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel – was the brand new Yeongam barrier.

“It was good to do the photo with all the guys,” championship leader Webber said afterwards, “going back all those years with some of our heroes obviously in those (1986) photos.”

Bruno Senna has admitted he wants to stay at HRT next year.
The 26-year-old made his debut with the struggling new Spanish team this season, but has recorded only 3 finishes so far and never qualified higher than 21st.

But according to the news agency Reuters, the Brazilian nephew of the great Ayrton Senna “said HRT … remained his main focus for next year”.

After driving his late uncle’s race-winning 1993 McLaren at Goodwood last weekend, Senna said: “At the end of the day you never know what can and cannot happen in the future.

“All I can do is keep pushing and hopefully get some good results.”

Senna said 2010 is not a wasted season.

“I think I have developed a lot, learned a lot in formula one. I have improved so much on driving and being assured of myself, in motivation.

“In the end of the day, all I think about is making my career long.

“It’s a bit frustrating when you are trying to compete but can’t,” he continued. “But at the end of the day my career is not about only this year.”

For the first time since 1994, the name Senna in Formula 1 start list. The season opener went for Bruno yet resinous. In eight races of the Brazilians saw only twice in 16th the checkered flag. The HRT is not only slow but also difficult to control. Nevertheless, the 26-year-old is happy to be a member in the premier class. Well, must follow the next step.

“Formula 1 is so difficult that one can not imagine. One can only react,” Senna is quoted by Auto Motor und Sport ‘. “In the first two or three races I had severe adjustment problems of the sports cars I’ve driven in the past year, back on formula cars. At a certain point, I got my normal F1 driving style found again.”
The greatest successes celebrated Senna in the British Formula 3, which he finished as joint Ritter (2006), and in the GP2. In the junior formula, which is held under Formula 1, missed the youngster the title in 2008 only just. “I was always one of the top drivers. Therefore, it is now very ugly for me so far to go back. Especially the Überrundetwerden is bad because you can focus fully on your race and not your strategy.”

Talk big, triple world champion Ayrton’s nephew Senna has already beaten around. This includes the announcement that he may be in a better car champion. “What is clear is that easy to say but difficult to put into practice. But I think basically because I have the potential. Whenever I had to take another step, I’ve done.”

Berger backs Schumacher amid comeback negativity Berger backs Schumacher amid comeback negativityComments Off

May 4 (GMM)  Gerhard Berger has backed Michael Schumacher amid a climate of continuing criticism of the seven time world champion’s performance so far in 2010.

Four races into 41-year-old Schumacher’s F1 comeback at the wheel of a Mercedes, the critique of pundits has ranged from a verdict of disappointment to a harsh denigration of his skills after three years of retirement.

“I find all the talk about Michael a bit tedious, because it is always with a negative slant,” 10-time GP winner Berger, who raced in Schumacher’s era until retiring in 1997, said on Austrian TV ‘Sport und Talk aus dem Hangar 7′.

“Michael has come back and is doing what he wants.  I think you cannot change the status of someone who is a seven time world champion,” added the 50-year-old former Ferrari and McLaren driver.

Austrian Berger backs Schumacher to improve his pace in the forthcoming races.

“We know his ambition.  We know that if he does something, he does it right.  I think we must take him seriously again in the future,” he said.

After the initial three races of 2010, Berger admits that Schumacher’s performance in China was a setback.

“It was weak, but that can happen,” said the former teammate of the late F1 great Ayrton Senna.

“I think he has done an excellent job so far — except for the last race.  In the first three grands prix he was in the top six of the championship.  That is a great achievement,” added Berger.

Also defending Schumacher is his countryman and friend Sebastian Vettel, who until the great German’s struggle in 2010 was nicknamed by the German press ‘Baby-Schumi’.

“He is yet to exhaust the potential of his car and will therefore get better from a driving point of view from race to race,” the Red Bull driver told Switzerland’s Motorsport Aktuell.

“I wouldn’t write him off for a long time,” added 22-year-old Vettel.

Force India’s Adrian Sutil also sees nothing odd about Schumacher’s comeback to date.

“I had counted on it being difficult for him.  Formula one has changed to the extremes in the past few years so that you can lose half a second and not know exactly why,” he told spox.com.

“Plus it would have been funny if Schumacher had beaten us all after three years of being retired — then he really would have been the god of F1.

“That doesn’t mean he’s doing badly; on the contrary, he’s always in the top ten.  He only needs time,” added Sutil.

Senna not as good as uncle says Brundle Senna not as good as uncle says BrundleComments Off

May 3 (GMM)  Bruno Senna is not as good as his late uncle, but Martin Brundle thinks a deeper analysis of the Brazilian rookie’s performance so far would be unfair.

Brundle, who had a fierce battle with eventual triple world champion Ayrton Senna for the British F3 title in 1983, is now observing 26-year-old Bruno’s rookie season as commentator for British television BBC.

The Briton concedes it is “spooky” to note the physical similarities between uncle and nephew, particularly with the helmet visor up.

“Senna is a fine young driver and seems a very good human being,” said Brundle.

“His GP2 performance suggests that he is worthy of a chance in F1 but it is fair to say he doesn’t appear to have the potential of his late uncle Ayrton,” he added.

But Brundle warned that Senna, who was considered for the Brawn seat alongside Jenson Button last year, cannot be judged too harshly in 2010.

“Given the Hispania car that he is driving, it is virtually impossible to make any further judgement at this time,” he said.
