Dani Clos will take part in the first free practice session at the Spanish GP(0) Spanish driver Dani Clos will step into the F112 for the first time on Friday to take part in the first free practice session of the Spanish Grand Prix which will take place at the Circuit de Catalunya. 23 year-old Clos will substitute teammate Narain Karthikeyan for that session and will join Pedro de la Rosa for the first 90 minutes of practice in Montmeló. It will be history in the making for HRT Formula 1 Team at the Circuit de Catalunya since this will be the first time that two Spanish drivers hit the track forming a part of a Spanish team at the Spanish Grand Prix. It will be a moment to remember for Spanish motorsport and a great opportunity for Clos to prove his worth in front of his home crowd. After having completed 377.67 kilometres at the helm of the F111 in the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi last November and having joined the team as an official test driver in February, Dani Clos will take another step on Friday and will fulfill another vital aspect of his testing role by completing his first laps at the wheel of the F112. A car that will be brining a series of aerodynamic upgrades for this important Grand Prix. Dani Clos: “I’m delighted to have this opportunity. With a renowned trajectory in karting, Clos made his debut in single-seater racing in 2004 in Formula Renault Italia 2.0, going on to win the Championship in 2006. Alonso: Ferrari must improve over next races(0) Ferrari’s task is to improve step by step, rather than make a quantum leap in Barcelona next weekend. That is the claim of Spaniard Fernando Alonso, as the famous Italian team disappointed some headline-writers on Tuesday by not launching a ‘B’ car at the Mugello test. “We have to take a step forward in Montmelo, one in Monte Carlo, another in Canada, and so on,” Alonso is quoted by La Stampa, after topping the rain-affected first day of testing on Tuesday with the improved F2012 car. He acknowledged that Ferrari cannot win the 2012 season if the performance of the opening four grands prix is repeated throughout the season. “We have to be qualifying in the top ten, fighting for the top five and having both cars in the points in every race,” he insisted. Asked if he thinks the title is a realistic goal, Alonso said: “We are optimistic.” He said he pushed as hard as he could in Australia, Malaysia, China and Bahrain with a sub-standard car. “It was like walking on a wire a hundred feet up,” said the 2005 and 2006 world champion. “If you do one thing wrong – hit a curb in qualifying or miss a braking point in the race – you’re not in the top ten. “We do not have the fastest car, but with a team like Ferrari, a good car is enough. “I’m not the best in qualifying, or in the rain, or on the street circuits, but I try to be a 9.5 in everything.” |

Ma Qing Hua joins HRT Formula 1 Team’s Driver Development ProgrammeComments Off HRT Formula 1 Team announces the incorporation of Chinese driver Ma Qing Hua to the Spanish team’s young driver development programme. The formation programme designed by HRT F1 Team for Ma Qing Hua includes professional assessment in his career as a driver, private tests with cars from different categories and simulator tests. If the results of the partnership are satisfactory, Qing Hua could take to the wheel of the F112 at the Formula 1 Young Driver test. Ma Qing Hua will perform his first official act with HRT Formula 1 Team on Thursday the 12th of April at a press conference previous to the Chinese Grand Prix (13th to 15th of April), which takes place at the Shanghai International Circuit. The details of the press conference will be announced shortly. The incorporation of Ma Qing Hua to HRT Formula 1 Team’s driver development programme is part of the Spanish team’s strategy in order to serve as a platform for the formation of professionals in the pinnacle of world motorsport. The driver born in Shanghai has been competing in different categories of national and international motorsport for many years. His incorporation to HRT F1 Team’s Driver Development Programme takes place after some simulator tests and a testing session in Cheste (Valencia) at the wheel of a World Series car. Barrichello not ruling out Ferrari returnComments Off Just after backing his friend and countryman to bounce back, Rubens Barrichello has refused to rule out returning to formula one to replace the struggling Felipe Massa. After 19 consecutive seasons in F1, 39-year-old Barrichello had to switch to the Indycar series for 2012 after losing his race seat at Williams. Speaking to Brazilian television Sportv this week, however, the Brazilian said he cannot rule out returning to the grid — even with Ferrari. After a six-year tenure, Barrichello left Ferrari at the end of 2005 and – until now – has not looked back overly fondly on his treatment alongside the famous Italian team’s former number one Michael Schumacher. But in the wake of Massa’s recent performance struggles, Barrichello was voted in an Italian poll as the ideal replacement for the diminutive 30-year-old. When asked about Ferrari, Barrichello said this week: “I want the fans to understand that I don’t have any hard feelings. “If they called me today to go drive for them I would go. It was the best team I’ve ever driven for in terms of support, of creativity. But there were definitely some spicy episodes,” he added. With the backing of sponsors, Barrichello has signed on with the KV team in Indycar for 2012, but he insists he is “completely open” about returning to F1. “It would be something to think about,” he said in the televised interview on Wednesday. “I think anything can happen. I’m not saying it will happen, but I have to be ready.” Barrichello, the longest-serving driver in F1 history, revealed that he still enjoys the backing of Bernie Ecclestone, the sport’s influential chief executive. “He asked me if I was really going to race in Indycar and I told him ‘Yeah, because you didn’t find me a place in F1′,” he joked. “He said he will see what he can do about it. Sala: KERS unlikely for HRT in 2012Comments Off HRT’s team boss has admitted installing KERS is an unlikely goal for the struggling Spanish team this year. Luis Perez Sala said the new F112 was designed to accommodate the energy-recovery technology, but qualifying comfortably within the 107 per cent rule is a better target for now. “We have a car we are yet to discover,” he told El Confidencial. Indeed, HRT travelled to Australia last month having hardly run its new Cosworth-powered car, and failed to qualify for the season opener. “It is designed to carry KERS but in the short term we will not (use it). We don’t think we’re going to race with it this year,” he added. “So, in this respect, it’s not perfect. Right now, we have assembled the car in a hurry and so the private testing at Mugello, just after Bahrain, will be very important to us.” Sala, having rebuilt HRT following the departure of team boss Colin Kolles, was speaking from HRT’s new headquarters at the Caja Magica (Magic Box). “After Bahrain, we will have the cars here. From the Spanish grand prix, we will begin to function more effectively. “In China and Bahrain we will improve things in the car and the team, but it is a slow process that will last all year. “As I sit here (in Madrid), some people are in Valencia, others in Germany, England … the cars are flying to China and we need to address issues of reliability, not just performance.” It is a tough situation for HRT, but Sala concedes that the ‘paddock perception’ of the team is that it has gone backwards since debuting in 2010. “It is really our first year,” he insists. He reveals that Bernie Ecclestone, once a staunch critic of the struggling backmarkers, is “quiet”. “We have not had any problems, I think he is calm,” said Sala. It is also a busy time off the track for HRT, as many rival teams are busily signing the new Concorde Agreement for 2013. “There are teams that are more advanced than others; for us, the negotiations are still at the beginning,” he said. The most obvious goals right now, Sala insists, are to have “a team that works together, has a reliable car and a small team that can develop it, and we’re around 105pc off the pole”. |

Alonso ‘more complete’ than SchumacherComments Off Fernando Alonso is F1′s ‘driver of the decade’, according to Pedro de la Rosa. Alonso, now at Ferrari, won his titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006. De la Rosa told Mundo Deportivo: “I think Fernando was the best of the decade, over Michael. “Why? Because no matter what the rules, he was always on top; with grooved tyres, with slicks, with blown diffusers, with double diffusers, with Pirelli, Bridgestone, Michelin … “If you look at it, he is the most complete.” As for the 2012 contest, however, de la Rosa has another favourite. Liuzzi to contest Italian touring car seriesComments Off HRT refugee Vitantonio Liuzzi has re-emerged on the grid of the Italian-based touring car series Superstars. So, in 2012, he will race a Mercedes C63 AMG – which he tested last week at Monza – in the Maurizio Flammini-organised Superstars series. Also on the grid will be former F1 drivers Christian Fittipaldi, Mika Salo, Gianni Morbidelli and Johnny Herbert. “I’m persuaded that Superstars is a great choice to open yourself to other categories than F1,” said Liuzzi. The season begins in April at Monza, then moving on to Imola, Donington, Mugello, the Hungaroring, Spa, Portimao, Vallelunga and Sentul (Indonesia). Mercedes eyes Hamilton as Schumacher successorComments Off Lewis Hamilton has been earmarked by Mercedes as a potential replacement for Michael Schumacher beyond the end of this season. The newspaper said Briton Hamilton, the 2008 world champion whose McLaren deal ends this year, is the ‘plan B’ should seven time world champion return to retirement before his 44th birthday. Bild am Sonntag said Mercedes already knows Hamilton after powering his F3 title in 2005. “If we had a plan B already,” motor sport vice-president Norbert Haug is quoted as saying, “we would not be well advised to talk about it in public. “Before we talk to Michael, this is not a topic,” he insisted. F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone said recently he doubts Hamilton will see out his career with McLaren. “If he doesn’t perform this year he’ll be looking to move on. And the team, maybe, will also be looking to him to move on,” the 81-year-old Briton said. According to Bild, however, more than 50 per cent of German fans surveyed want Marussia’s Timo Glock to replace Schumacher. Hamilton secured 3.9 per cent of the vote. “This is all just speculation,” a Mercedes spokesman is quoted by Germany’s Sport1. “There are no negotiations with any drivers and we will only speak with Michael at the appropriate time. “For now our entire focus is on the start of the season.” |

Pundits agree Ferrari struggling in 2012Comments Off Former Jordan and Jaguar designer Gary Anderson has singled out Lotus and Force India to impress in 2012. He admitted, however, that the team may have been experimenting with setup, as the new Red Bull and McLaren have so far been “model students” in terms of handling. Force India’s Paul di Resta, meanwhile, did not look impressive on the end-of-day timesheet, but Anderson said he was pleasantly surprised with the long-run consistency of the VJM05. He said both di Resta and Nico Rosberg were both circulating at the same time with medium times, and the Force India was faster than the Mercedes, which was suffering from heavily-degrading tyres. And Anderson added: “Lotus had to miss last week in Barcelona, but today they could confirm their good impression of Jerez. “The car is fully sorted and the laptimes are consistent.” Ferrari, however, is another matter. “They are still using the coloured (aerodynamic) paint, which for me is a sign that the engineers don’t understand what is happening with the airflow. “And just before the start of the season, that’s pretty alarming.” Also trackside on Thursday was Sky commentator Martin Brundle, who confirmed Anderson’s view that the new McLaren looks “very good”. Similarly, he added: “The Ferrari looks a bit of a handful, especially when it’s coming out of a corner trying to put the power down. “It doesn’t look as bad as the McLaren did last year, but they’ve got some issues — there’s no doubt about it.” Brundle also agreed with Anderson that, unlike the cakewalk of 2011, Red Bull could be set for a close fight this season. “You can see Mark Webber working quite hard at the wheel,” said the former McLaren driver, “so I can understand why some of my mates in the paddock are saying it’s looking really close.” |

Trulli reveals Ferrari offerComments Off Jarno Trulli has revealed he was offered a seat at Ferrari some years ago. 2004 Monaco grand prix winner Trulli, 37, drove since 1997 for Minardi, Prost, Jordan, Renault and Caterham’s former guise Lotus. Writing in his New York Times blog, correspondent Brad Spurgeon said Trulli was made the Ferrari offer while he was racing for Toyota between 2005 and 2009. Trulli reportedly told Italy’s Autosprint magazine that Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali’s predecessor, the now FIA president Jean Todt, made him the offer. “Nobody knows this, but at this point I think I can publicly thank Jean Todt for having been one of the few top team managers to consider me during my career,” he said. “I won’t tell you when exactly — I was racing for Toyota and I was doing very well. But I had signed a rather long contract with the Japanese, and in my career I’ve always honoured my commitments. “In 15 years of F1 I’ve never needed lawyers,” added Trulli. Trulli left Renault for Toyota at the end of the 2004 season, driving for the carmaker until it pulled out of formula one at the end of 2009. Rubens Barrichello left Ferrari at the end of 2005, replaced by Felipe Massa. Michael Schumacher retired a year later, replaced by Kimi Raikkonen. At Ferrari, Frenchman Todt handed over to Domenicali at the end of 2007. |

Dani Clos joins HRT F1 Team as its new test driver for 2012Comments Off HRT F1 Team has reached an agreement with Dani Clos by which the young 23-year-old driver from Barcelona will become test driver of the Spanish outfit for the 2012 season.
The incorporation of Clos is another step in the team’s aspirations of establishing itself as a platform for young talents to reach the pinnacle of world motorsport.
Dani Clos will form an integral part of the team, taking part in several free practice sessions on Fridays and travelling to every Grand Prix throughout the season, with the main objective of learning and getting to know the team. There is a lot of hard work ahead of him but Dani will have the whole team’s support, including that of his teammates Narain Karthikeyan and Pedro de la Rosa, to help him learn and progress in such a demanding environment.
Dani Clos experienced his first contact with the team this past November, during the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi, and made the most of the opportunity given to him. The good sensations that the team and driver had, along with the objective of strengthening HRT F1 Team, helped to reach a quick agreement that was desired by both parties.
The Spanish driver will start to exert his functions as the team’s test driver immediately and will be with the team for the third pre-season tests in Barcelona from the 1st to the 4th of March.

Vettel admits doubts over F1 grandees’ 2012 paceComments Off While the smiles in the Lotus pits are obvious at Jerez, the same cannot be said of ‘grandee’ outfits Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull. “My initial feelings are pretty positive,” he added. “The car feels reasonably quick.” But with every other 2012 car featuring a radical ‘step’ in its front nose, some reports believe McLaren may have missed a trick by opting for a conservative solution. “It is not a trick or a loophole that we did not spot,” said McLaren’s technical director Paddy Lowe. “Some people have some interesting ideas around the use of that step, and we are looking with interest at all of that stuff,” he told the Mirror. Actually, the McLaren was not far off the pace of Sebastian Vettel’s new Red Bull, but the pair were a long way from Romain Grosjean’s impressive Lotus E20, and the 2011 Mercedes driven by Nico Rosberg. Vettel, also getting his first taste of his 2012 machinery on Thursday, admitted there are “question marks” about all of F1′s regular pacesetters. Nevertheless, “We are where we want to be,” the reigning world champion smiled. “It feels fine and as we expected.” Agreed team owner Dietrich Mateschitz on a rare paddock visit: “It looks quite good but anything else would have been a surprise as the car is a development.” Much more worried is Ferrari, after the aggressive 2012 Ferrari on Thursday looked no more impressive in Fernando Alonso’s hands than it had under Felipe Massa’s control earlier this week. Britain’s Daily Mail said the F2012 is “ugly in more ways than one”. “I can only say that it is going to take a lot of analysis to put all the pieces of the jigsaw together,” said Ferrari’s British technical director Pat Fry. “I am not happy with where we are at the moment.” Arguably even less happy on Thursday were Force India’s Jules Bianchi and Nico Hulkenberg, after the French test driver crashed the new VJM05 before setting a laptime. There were not enough parts to repair the car and so Hulkenberg’s scheduled track debut was postponed. “I’m very sorry,” said Bianchi, “because my mistake has cost the team a lot of time and effort.” |

Klien to replace Yamamoto in BrazilComments Off Christian Klien will be back in action for the HRT team at this weekend’s Brazilian grand prix. The Austrian also replaced Japanese Sakon Yamamoto in Singapore due to food poisoning, but no reason has been given for the change of drivers ahead of the Interlagos event. “I am very happy to get a second opportunity to do another grand prix here after Singapore and I hope that we are doing a good weekend with positive results,” said Klien, 27. He has raced at Interlagos twice before, most recently in 2005 with Red Bull. The Austrian newspaper Kleine Zeitung said recently Klien might return to the Cosworth-powered F110 cockpit in Brazil or Abu Dhabi in a last-ditch effort to help HRT beat Lotus to tenth place in the constructors’ championship. |

Kovalainen denies Briatore blocked F1 careerComments Off Heikki Kovalainen has denied media reports claiming his former manager Flavio Briatore twice prevented his formula one race debut. A Finnish newspaper had said the Finn could have raced with Minardi and then Williams in 2004 and 2005, but Kovalainen instead had to wait until 2007 for a race seat at the then Briatore-managed Renault to open up. Kovalainen, now 29, subsequently split with Briatore after the crashgate scandal, and negotiated his own move from McLaren to Lotus for 2010. But he wrote on Twitter late on Monday: “(The) news about my management blocking my career (is) so not true. “We had (a) clear plan since I joined (the) Renault junior programme and stuck to it 100 per cent. Ignore the false headlines originating from Finland,” added Kovalainen. In other driver news, Williams refused to comment on speculation about its 2011 lineup, following reports that Pastor Maldonado is a candidate to join the team next year if Nico Hulkenberg does not accept the offer of a five-year contract. “We have no comment to make concerning our driver line up for 2011 at this juncture,” said a spokeswoman. |
