Mercedes boss close time to win racesComments Off That is the information of the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, which said the team led by Ross Brawn is preparing to unleash a major car upgrade for next month’s Spanish grand prix. If Mercedes’ W01 is not on the pace by June, the Brackley based team will switch its focus to the 2011 world championship. “The basis of our car is right,” said Nico Rosberg, who was on the podium with the dominant Red Bulls at the end of Sunday’s Malaysian grand prix. “We have very good developments coming, and I cannot wait,” added the 24-year-old German. An unnamed team insider told the newspaper: “Brawn wants to win races by June at the latest, or he will write off the season and focus on next year.” When the team was called Honda, its British boss similarly wrote off the 2008 season and then rolled out last year’s title winning Brawn BGP001. |

Ecclestone confirm, F1 is still boringComments Off Even though Melbourne and Sepang hosted two exciting races within eight days, Bernie Ecclestone believes F1 still needs to implement changes. After the debut of the sport’s new refuelling ban era produced a highly-criticised processional race in Bahrain, rain is taking at least some of the credit for the better spectacles witnessed at the next two races in 2010. Before sodden Sepang shook up the grid order for the Malaysian GP, F1 supremo Ecclestone met with team bosses on Friday to discuss the problem of boring races. “Don’t be fooled,” the 79-year-old is quoted as saying by the Telegraph. “We have been lucky with the rain. We have got to do something. “For the first time the teams have realised that they have to do something about it. We don’t need reverse grids, we just need more overtaking,” said Ecclestone. Asked what could be done, he suggested F1 should “make the front wing smaller and get rid of the double diffuser”. YF1 |

Hamilton review their performance in the Malaysian Grand Prix at SepangComments Off Lewis Hamilton finished the Malaysian Grand Prix in 6th position while team mate Jenson Button crossed the finish line in 8th position. “I had a great start, went down the inside and got past a lot of cars on the first lap. I was able to keep going for much of the race on my first set of tyres, and even nearly got past Sebastian [Vettel] after his pitstop. “After my pitstop, I tried my best to get past Adrian [Sutil], but he was very smart at getting clean exits and was simply too fast down the straights. He drove a fantastic race, actually; faultless, in fact. “From 20th on the grid, I think sixth was a brilliant result. I reckon we showed today that we were fast enough to compete with the guys at the very front – and, that being the case, if we’d started farther up we could’ve had an even better result this afternoon. “Overall, then, I’m well happy with my race – I couldn’t ask for any more to be honest. The team really deserved this, and we’re now closer to the top in the constructors’ championship than we were before the race. So we’ll take forward a lot of positives with us into the next race.” |

Malaysian GP: Virgin impressionsComments Off Good race to Virgin, went all the way today as Lucas di Grassi brought his VR-01 home in 14th position, helping his Virgin Racing team to achieve an important first race finish. Lucas drove a very mature race to see his own maiden chequered flag. He beat the other new teams into submission at the same time as having to contend with a missing front wing end-plate after an unsuccessful 11th lap challenge from the Lotus Racing car of Heikki Kovalainen. So, Timo was less fortunate on a day where both cars were looking good to make it to the finish. He was going great guns at the start, but was losing time behind Jarno Trulli. In a bid to dispense with the Lotus he was about to execute a crucial overtaking move when he locked his rear wheels into the corner, the back end of his VR-01 stepped out and he inadvertently struck Jarno’s car, which resulted in Timo’s race coming to an end after only 2 laps. Nevertheless, everyone at Virgin Racing is delighted that their season is now properly underway and both drivers will be heading straight back to Bicester for some all-important race preparation on the Wirth Research Simulators in readiness for their next challenge – the Chinese Grand Prix in two weeks’ time. Mercedes ran a new sponsor on the livery of its 2010 car at Sepang this weekend,Comments Off
It is believed the Brackley based team instead wanted to devote its full corporate attention to title sponsor Petronas, the Malaysian state-owned oil company that also owns the naming rights of its home race at Sepang. Mercedes ran a new sponsor on the livery of its 2010 car at Sepang this weekend, despite not officially announcing the deal. But a new deal had clearly been reached by Mercedes GP with a company called Autonomy, whose name and ‘A’ logo was seen on the monocoque sides as well as the aerodynamic piece in front of the sidepods. Autonomy is a jointly UK and US-based software company. GMM |

Vettel opened his 2010 victory account in SepangComments Off Highlights of the answers given by Malaysian Grand Prix winner Sebastian Vettel, in his Red Bull Racing Renault, during the post race press conference at Sepang
A victory today set up by an excellent start and one that looked fairly comfortable if you ever can be comfortable in the heat of Malaysia.
How much of a relief was that after the last couple of races?
Mark held onto you pretty much in the opening stages but in the second stint he came back at you. Was that all to do with the traffic?
It only took you one race to wipe out the gap to Massa and Alonso, who were quite far ahead. Were you expecting to do that so quickly?
Last year you won the third race, and this year you’ve now won the third race. Are you on the same schedule like last year, to carry on fighting for the championship? |

HRT: A fantastic day for the team completing first two-car finishComments Off Dr. Colin Kolles, Team Principal, commented: “A fantastic day for the team completing our first two-car finish in only our third race, with no pre-season testing. Bruno Senna had a good start while Karun Chandhok had a bad one. But Karun could find a good pace then and both drivers had reliable races. Again we have made a great step forward. We reached our goal with two cars finishing the race. “Congratulations to the team who worked again hard to achieve this result. Now we have to work on more developments for the next Grand Prix in China”, added. Karun Chandhok, said: “A fantastic result for the team in only our third race. The car felt really good and I was able to keep a consistent pace. I pitted on lap 17 and had a tricky moment passing Trulli. We have been working really hard and it is good to get our second finish in a row. Overall been a good weekend for us and am very happy for the team.We have been working really hard and it is good to get our second finish in a row.” Bruno Senna said; “I had a good start and gained as much as I could. I am really pleased for the team to have finished the race with both cars. It has been another positive weekend for the team taking a good step forward.” GMM |

Jaime Alguersuari, take first points on F1Comments Off Jaime Alguersuari, take first points on STR5-03, 9th. “I am very happy to have scored points today and I have to say I never expected to do it so early in the season. A big thanks to everyone in the team who have worked so hard to achieve this result. Step by step, I have improved my performance, but this weekend was very tough because I didn’t know the track. I enjoyed this race, especially the fights I had with some of the others: I think I learned a bit about the art of fighting with Michael (Schumacher) last weekend in Melbourne. Towards the end, I was a bit worried about how the tyres would last, as I was on the soft ones, but I had no degradation. It is very satisfying and I feel a lot more confident now going into the upcoming races.” Sebastien Buemi, STR5-01, 11th: “This race didn’t go so well for me, because, after quite a good start, my front wing was damaged on the first lap when I made contact with Kobayashi. It meant that from then on, I lacked grip and had a lot of understeer. I ended driving for much of the race with a damaged wing, but once it was changed I was able to put in some very fast lap times, but by then it was too late to do much. A one stop strategy in any case was not on for me, as I did two stints on the Option tyre. In general, these two races in one week have not gone well for me, but we can be optimistic about Shanghai, as the whole package, the car and the team seems to have made a step forward this weekend. And congratulations to Jaime for his first F1 points.” Franz Tost: “A very good weekend for Red Bull, with three out of four cars in the points. Well done to Red Bull Racing for this well deserved one-two finish. We are very pleased to have scored our first points of the season and well done to Alguersuari for the first two points of his F1 career. Jaime continues to improve each weekend. He got a good start and then drove a fantastic race, not only defending his position but also carrying off some daring overtaking moves. Then for the last third of the race, he controlled the situation, looking after his tyres and the engine to complete an excellent race performance.” “Buemi made a reasonable start, but unfortunately, he made contact with Kobayashi at Turn 2 on the opening lap, which damaged the nose and front wing end plate. After this, he soon complained of heavy understeer, so we brought forward his first pit stop. Having calculated that a nose change at this time would have lost him too much track position, we did not change it, again bringing him in early at the second stop when we did fit the new nose. After that, his lap times improved and he brought the car home eleventh. We are looking forward to China with optimism, because not only do the drivers continue to improve, but the team also worked very well, so I hope we can pick up some more points in Shanghai.” |

Kubica sign with Ferrari?Comments Off
Auto Hebdo (magazine) reports rumours that Ferrari could be eyeing Renault’s Robert Kubica as a possible new teammate for Fernando Alonso in 2011. When the Pole Kubica switched from BMW-Sauber at the end of 2009, it was suggested that he had signed a single-year contract in order to be free for 2011 to join his friend Alonso in the red garage. Magazine Auto Hebdo, who said a preliminary agreement may already have been signed, made clear that its report was not an April Fool’s joke! Massa’s contract runs out at the end of 2010, and Alonso told Italian media in Malaysia that he was not frustrated by having to follow the Brazilian to the chequered flag in Melbourne a week ago. “Frustrated? No, because team orders are not allowed,” said the Spaniard. GMM |

Red Bull Racing Renault review their performance in the Malaysian Grand Prix at SepangComments Off Sebastian Vettel, Winner! great start from attack championship. “If Mark had been in my position I’m sure he would have done the same. After that it was a question of getting away from our competitors. I could see that Mark and I had the same pace – he was a little quicker in the beginning, but I was trying to save my tyres so I could pull away before the stop. The second stint was extremely long and it’s very hot here – I didn’t stop sweating”, addded driver. It’s very physical and at some stages I was hoping for rain just to get a bit of a cool down! Yesterday was extremely difficult with the conditions, but today it stayed dry. We have a magnificent car and the key once again was to pace yourself and watch your tyres. Bridgestone did a good job bringing two compounds here that worked well. It’s a very good result for us after two races where we didn’t finish where we wanted. Driver have words to Team: “Thanks to the team – it’s crucial not to panic in that moment and stay relaxed as it’s a long season. Sitting here on Sunday afternoon after finishing in first position is the best result we can get. On top of that, Mark is in second place. It’s a big plus for the team and a lot of points for us, I’m very, very happy.” Car 6 Mark Webber, 2nd, Start Position: 1st Fabrice Lom, Renault, Principal Engineer Track Support: “Woo hoo! What a good result – it’s the one we deserved since the beginning of the season, but due to reliability problems we were not able to make it. Now it’s done, the reliability is there and it’s a one two finish – it’s great. After all the difficult times we are a team and are back in the fight. Our big competitors didn’t score a lot of points so it’s a really good result for us and the engines behaved very well in this heat. We are fully happy today. “ |

Michael Schumacher is believed to have rejoined the F1 drivers’ union GPDAComments Off
Earlier this season, the returning 41-year-old hesitated to rejoin the Grand Prix Drivers Association, despite playing a leading role until his retirement at the end of 2006. It was rumoured that the Mercedes driver did not get along with the GPDA’s chairman Pedro de la Rosa, who quit the association in protest after Schumacher’s Monaco ‘Rascasse’ parking incident four years ago. In Melbourne, Spaniard de la Rosa stepped down and was replaced as chairman by Mercedes reserve driver Nick Heidfeld. Schumacher’s countryman and friend Sebastian Vettel, and his former Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa, have also now replaced Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso as directors. Schumacher’s spokeswoman Sabine Kehm was not immediately available for comment. GMM |

Alonso from the formation lap, he had a problem going through the gearsComments Off Bad result for Ferrari team, only seven points at the end of the Malaysian Grand Prix, courtesy of a seventh place for Felipe Massa. Fernando Alonso had to retire at the start of lap 55, when the engine broke. After the first three races of the season, Felipe heads the Drivers’ classification on 39 points, two more than his team-mate and Vettel, while the Scuderia stays at the top of the Constructors’ classification with 76 points, ten more than McLaren. “Today’s result is down to yesterday’s qualifying” , said Domenicali, “when you start that far back on the grid, it’s difficult to do better. On top of that, we had a few reliability problems which should put us on our guard: if we want to aspire to the title we absolutely have to sort this out”. Fernando drove an amazing race, given that right from the formation lap, he had a problem going through the gears. To drive under these conditions is impressive and he was able to stay in the fight for points right to the end. Felipe also drove a really great race, especially in the second part and heading the Drivers’ classification is a just reward for all he has done in this early part of the season. An initial assessment after three races? Positive, because we lead both championships and have shown we are competitive at the highest level. We know where we have to improve – performance and reliability – but we can count on an excellent package – car, drivers, team – all capable of being in the fight for both titles.” |
